There is a dry erase board where each kids name is written to welcome them, a very nice touch. Each kid gets a goody bag at the end and a token which can be used on the toy vending machines in the lobby. This is a HUGE hit with the kids! They usually get little jewelry trinkets or toys that they get excited about. One time the staff gave them balloons which was sweet. The dentist herself is very kind and gentle and thorough with the kids. She'll take time to answer questions and explain things. The same go for all the hygienists here. Just this month, she has decided to drop Metlife. This appears to be a pattern -- a pattern of dropping some of the more common insurance carriers. I do not know for how long it has been going on, but it causes chaos and unpredictability around a part of a young child's life that is already scary and confusing. This is arrogant and, and it sends a perhaps unintentional signal that her team possibly care only about the wealthiest members of the Arlington community who can afford to bear the burden of this unpredictability. It forces busy families to scramble to find a new dentist for their child -- and I fear it can cause harm to children who develop a bond of trust with one building and staff to be migrated to another. So, pray tell, how do Metlife families at your practice explain this to their 3 and 4 year olds? If you don't belong to an extremely high-earning two family household, Dr. Flanagan's practice is not for you. You cannot predict from one year to the next if you can afford for your child to be seen at this practice.

This office misled me about accepting United Concordia insurance. When I booked, I was told they…read moreaccept it and that my cleaning and X-rays would be covered. At the appointment, I was told I had to pay the full amount upfront and would "receive a check from my insurance" later -- something no other dental office has ever required. Normally, the office bills insurance directly. That should have been my first warning. I later found out they are out of network, and of the $500 I paid for a basic cleaning and X-rays, my insurance only reimbursed $200, leaving me with $300 out of pocket. This same visit would have been 100% covered by any in-network dentist. When I tried to cancel my follow-up appointment after discovering all this, they attempted to charge an additional $100 cancellation fee, even though their own misinformation caused the problem. This office is not transparent and takes advantage of patients by misrepresenting insurance acceptance and then charging unreasonable fees. If you have United Concordia or any dental insurance, verify everything directly -- or be prepared for surprise charges and frustration.

As of 2025 they will no longer take the military insurance. There's parking and she offers early morning appointments (7am). The appointments were ok, there's not much to say when you just get a cleaning and there's no dental issues. The hygienist goes pretty hard and even chipped the top of one of my front teeth. She told me I could have an orthodontist smooth it out. They charge an additional $50 out of pocket for fluoride. I sent my previous scans multiple times and they said they didn't receive them. When she did see my scan, I was referred to someone to get a second opinion on something she saw. Almost $500 later I find out it's just my sinus cavity. I know, better safe than sorry and can't fault her for doing her job. My final straw was getting charged a late cancellation fee. They require 48 hours notice which can be really hard if you're not sick 48 hours in advance and the day before your appointment is a weekend or holiday as was my case. I called the morning of and left a voicemail that I was sick; instead I went to urgent care and was diagnosed with strep throat and an ear infection. They did not receive this voicemail in time because the receptionist was also out sick. I was charged the fee 6 weeks later and when I called to see if they make medical exceptions I was told absolutely not because they have already written off too much from *all of us* because our insurance doesn't pay well. As a professional I can understand some of this, I know it's frustrating when people late cancel/no show or an insurance doesn't pay well. However, I always make exceptions for medical and other things that are truly out of their control. They are right to stop taking our insurance, it's not good when you start to resent your customers. Take away: -No matter how sick you are, if you want to avoid a fee, go to the appointment -Go if you know your dental insurance pays well or you plan to pay out of pocket -Insurance companies are the worst and need to raise their rates across the board

But strangely the Arlington office called me months later this past July to tell me Dr. Chun wasn't working in that office anymore and asked if I wanted to come back since he was gone. Wow. I asked if he was no longer working for Apex, and they told me he was, just in another office. I refuse to go to a dental office that employs him at all. Clearly they knew I left because of him yet no one contacted me about it until he left? Not an office I want to trust. Even if Dr. Chun isn't there anymore.

Update as of March 2026: I learned today that the Virginia Dental Board recently revoked the…read morelicense of Dr. Daniel Chun, the lead dentist at Apex Dental Care. According to the complaint, Chun performed unnecessary dental work (including crowns and implants) on patients, billed patients for procedures that were not performed, and threatened other doctors in his practice who spoke out. However, I do really commend the dentists at the practice who filed a complaint against Chun and the investigator who did such a thorough job of assembling records and documenting Chin's malpractice.
