It had been about a year since I'd been to Denny's Latin Cafe on Overseas Highway in Key Largo, and I decided it was time to make the trip back to what I've previously called the best Cuban food north of Havana. I walked in and was greeted warmly, and within minutes I was reminded why I remembered this place so well. It's authentic. No gimmicks. No trying too hard. Just good Cuban food. Since breakfast is clearly one of their superpowers, I went with the breakfast burrito loaded with eggs, cheese and potatoes. Wow. "Delicious" doesn't really do it justice. The eggs were perfectly seasoned, the potatoes had that beautiful crispness, and then they brought out their jalapeño hot sauce. I put some on the burrito and immediately asked, "Do you bottle this?" Yeah. It was that good. We also had the steak and eggs, and they nailed that too. Perfectly runny eggs next to a juicy, flavorful flank steak. Exactly what breakfast is supposed to be. A year later, the verdict hasn't changed. Yeah, this is the real deal. I still maintain that Denny's Latin Cafe serves the best Cuban food north of Havana. Five stars. And if somebody knows where I can get a bottle of that jalapeño sauce, we need to talk. read more

We come to the Keys every year for lobster season, and even though this café requires making an extra drive and a U-turn to get to, it's always worth it. It's become one of our annual traditions. The restaurant is a great size with plenty of seating. You can grab a seat at the bar if you want to enjoy breakfast there, or choose from one of the many tables throughout the restaurant. During our three mornings in the Keys, we never actually sat down to eat. Instead, we stopped in each morning for a café con leche and a few pastries to take back to the villa where we were staying. Everything was fresh, delicious, and the perfect way to start the day. The service is always friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and it's one of those places we genuinely look forward to visiting every year. If you're looking for a great breakfast stop in the Keys, this place is definitely worth the extra drive. read more

We ordered the bistec y huevos and the cubano sandwich. Both were delicious; I preferred the bistec y huevos. I had them add bacon and cheese to my eggs. The onions on the steak were amazing. Very much a local Cuban joint, it is small and packed. There are only a couple of parking spots out front, so we parked down the block at the Burger King. I liked that I could get my Cuban sandwich without mustard, etc, so that worked for me. Marnie didn't love her media noche (Cuban on a sweet roll), but it was ok. It is a pleasant place. read more

We stopped by Denny's Latin Cafe for coffee on the recommendation of a local. We're not sure what the locals are thinking, because it really wasn't that good. It's more of a little diner (dive), more than a cafe. The place wasn't particularly clean, seemed very old too. The coffee was OK, and we had a couple of empanadas, which were warm, not hot, and pretty greasy. The service was OK, but the staff wasn't very welcoming or friendly. We've made the drive from the mainland to the lower keys more more times than I can remember over the past 20 years and on every drive we make stops for coffee, hikes, sightseeing, meals, snacks, groceries... but in the past few years, Denny's Latin Cafe has become a regular (mostly due to my hubby). My hubby would always want to stop here to grab his Cafe Con Leche but I ran next door to Starbucks because I thought this place was kinda dirty... I was wrong. Over the years I realized the food is quite good. I sill grab my coffee next door at Starbucks but we pick up a variety of things from Dennys. MY hubby likes to grab a variety of easy items like the guava pastelitos, empanadas and croquetas. I also like their breakfast sandwiches and my hubby loves their Cuban sandwich. They have a bit of everything you'd want... they have a quite outside take out window... or you can order inside... you can sit at the counter bar in classic dinner stools... they have a full service dining room. And food options, breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything from lite bites to full meals. read more

This was our first stop once you get into Key Largo , you're driving for about four minutes until you make this stop! You pull off the side of the highway on this little strip mall area walk in order a Cuban ! They do have all areas down and more table service but this is a place that you ordered Cuban and then keep going on your three hour truck to Key West ! The bread is 10 out of 10. The sandwich was awesome. There were only a few dry areas but everything was pretty evenly distributed and the flavor is 10 out of 10. 3.5/5 Stopped here on my way to Key West during the holidays as I wanted to try Cuban food, and I was told Key Largo is an excellent place for lots of Cuban places. My party of 5 arrived around 2:30pm due to delays leaving Miami. It was moderately busy, but everyone emptied out as we were dining. Again, I'm not acclimated to Cuban food, and therefore was looking for assistance on what to order. To my surprise given the reviews here, the service I received was poor. My party asked some questions to clarify some menu items, and my server gave answers along the lines of "can you read the menu?". Yes, but what is yuca? What's the difference between mixed rice and white rice? It took an unusual amount of effort to get answers for some of the food items. As for the food, yes it was delicious. Most of us ordered the ox tail. It's not a style that we're used to, but there was very good flavour and it was slow cooked well. Another person ordered the mahi mahi. Decent, as he told me. Given the reviews here perhaps it was a one off experience, and honestly the food was good. I think a 3.5 star review therefore is fair for this place. read more

I've been to this place a few times before for toasted Cuban bread and a pastry, but not for a sandwich. I wanted a Cuban sandwich before I flew home. I didn't want to deal with the parking or crowds of Miami. The sandwich was very good. I think the Cubans in Miami might be pressed harder and slightly crunchier bread but other than that, this sandwich was perfect. Some places don't use shredded pork, but this place does and it was not dry. I wish they threw some of those potato sticks on there, but that's no big deal, since the sandwich is huge. This is always our first stop after flying into the Keys--no exceptions. There are so many must-tries here. If it's your first visit, start with the ropa vieja, the masita de puerco, or their Cuban sandwich--pressed perfectly, loaded with flavor, and absolutely worth the hype. You really can't go wrong. On my last visit, I tried El Jefe--think of it as a wrap stuffed with rice, black beans, chicken or pork, and platanitos. Trust me, you'll thank me later. This is Cuban food at its best in the upper keys. Located in Key Largo is this Cuban gem. It is not on the water, but it doesn't matter if you just want to eat real Cuban food in the keys. My husband had "masitas de puerco" which is pork chunks with onions and mojo, he loved them. His father owned one of the first Cuban restaurants in Miami located in the Little Havana area by 8 street (Calle Ocho) so he knows Cuban food. I had the fried grouper. It was very fresh, in a light batter and sooo good! We both had our dishes with black beans and white rice and platanitos maduros, which is fried sweet plantain. The dessert was recommended by our waitress, a pineapple cake....omg so good! No frosting, just the cake, super moist and all you could taste was the pineapple! The servers were so nice, informative and efficient. The place was basic, not fancy and no big deal like all traditional Cuban restaurants. Down to earth, simple and delicious Cuban food. We ran into it while looking for another restaurant. My philosophy: eat local and definitely Cuban food is local in this part of the country. I was dying for a Cubana sandwich on my drive down from Miami to Key West. Yelp rated this place as a four star so I stopped and got the sandwich I was hoping for. Fantastic food and service! First time eating Cuban foods and it won't be my last. we had an appetizer to try along with 3 different meals and each one didn't fail. We even bought 2 bottles of the mojo sauce which you can't get back home. prices were affordable. I didn't feel out of place in the cafe as sometimes certain environments can make you feel that way. I wish I had more time to go back. The only thing I didn't like was the waitress would not stop standing over my back when it came to how much to tip. We always tip suitable to price of food and service but I felt on edge to tip bigger then needed. read more

We came to the Miami/Keys area this week to explore more of the Florida Keys. We noted a high priority in finding authentic Cuban food and we certainly found it at this Cafe. We ordered LECHON ASADO entre' and mixed rice, black beans and plantain. Most authentic and best Cuban food ever! We could not get enough of it. When traveling, I try hard to do venues visited by locals (or mom/pop establishments). This is a must stop if in the area. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding. My son got the Media Noche sandwich, which was enough for two. Two members got burritos (some sort) and two of us got the Cuban sandwich.
