After a disappointing visit under previous ownership, we were happy to give the new Denny's Latin Cafe another try since it is close to our stay during our annual visit to Key Largo. Food was great - lechon asado (not dry), rabo encendido (tender large portion - four big pieces). We got the conch fritters along with the fried fish chunks as appetizers. Two sides came with the entrees and one with each appetizer which is generous. A bottle of mojo de ajo came to the table for the yuca as well as a condiment for the meats or fish. The fried fish pieces were a little salty but that's a small quibble consider how well everything else was. New menu is clearer to order from and new branded tables perk up the dining room and the space on the counter side. Coffee window is still there if you want to pop by to grab something to go and just a casual bite outside. read more

This is THE spot for Cuban coffee and pastries. Every time we come to the Keys, we stop here in the way in and the way out. The service is laid back but not slow. These ladies HUSTLE. It's a casual space with indoor and outdoor tables. Speaking Spanish helps but def not necessary. We LOVE this spot. read more

This place is a short walk from the Pelican cottages and we stopped by twice. First, was when we were craving something in the way of between dinner but lighter than lunch. Real feel was 118 so that short walk was brutal nonetheless. We burst in like race horses to the finish line, quickly placed our order at the counter, and sat down to enjoy the air conditioning. We both got the key lime pies and guarapo. At the last second I also added a cortadito. Because sleep is for losers. Everything was yummy and they seemed like a welcoming place. We returned the following day after checking out to an early and light lunch before our bus arrived. This called for another round of guarapos and this time we got the empanadas and croquettes. Everything came out fast and they let us linger over our fairly small order so we didn't have to melt to the bus stop. If I make my way back to Key Largo I'll be making a stop back here. read more

This is not a fancy place, but it offers good, Cuban food at a reasonable price. I came for lunch and had their chicken, rice and plantain dish. The chicken leg and thigh piece was large and moist albeit a bit less warm than I expected. My wife likes breast meat, and they only had the leg-thigh pieces on display. However when they knew she wanted white meat, they made her us a portion on the spot. I was sent here on a mission: don't mess it up. Ropa Vieja and plantains. Don't mess it up. I can't take the pressure--what if I forget the plantains? It was (shocker) a warm night in the Keys as we flirted with danger, the tropical storm dancing above us somewhere on the mainland. None of that mattered if I didn't score my wife that Ropa. In a different hour, like early morning, I'd be hooking up the IV to the espresso and beating all the late-rising suckers to those croquetas. Later in that hour it would be tortas (pancake) time. But for now I'd just watched an amazing sunset, and momma needed her viejas. Score one for the home team, I was in and out in a couple minutes since they apparently keep that item dialed up to dish out on a moment's notice. It was friendly fast service and efficient as all get-out. As I strutted back to our hotel, giant portion in hand, all was well on the Southern front. Yes it was amazing, and yes she was satisfied. Only criticism: normal rice. Apparently it was a given there'd be that "yellow rice". Oh my goodness 99% is not 100. But we somehow made it past that hurdle eating until stuffed. Lunchtime you can't go wrong with any of many Cuban sandwiches, and of course if not a flan lover there is undoubtedly key lime pie. You will like it all, and probably lots more we didn't have time to try. But there's always next time. read more

My parents live down in the Keys, and we normally end up at Habanos/Habanos on the Creek, but if you're up in Largo, I highly recommended Denny's! Up until a couple years ago, we used to make the drive through Key Largo about 20+ times each year and on many of these commutes we've been stopping at Dennys. Not all the food is the best, but the coffee is always great and the various pastries are too... so why the low rating: Typically, we would just pop into the takeout window and grab a couple of cafe con leche or cortadito, along with a empanada or pastelitos for the us to nosh on in the drive... this has always been excellent. Sometimes I ordered sandwiches to eat in the drive (or at the picnic tables on the side of the building that we typically refer to as the garden). As far as the sandwiches go, this is one of my dilemmas... years ago, I really enjoyed their Egg/Meat Sandwiches, Cuban Sandwiches, Pollo Sandwiches and of course, my favorite, the Media Noche... they were always very good (not dry, not overly pressed and always a good balance of meat, cheese and bread, but over the years the sandwiches appear to have less meat and pressed a bit too much (leaving the sandwiches too dry and the bread too crunchy). Only a couple times have we dined inside the restaurant... the service counter appears so cluttered and the whole restaurant feels so dated, that I just feel more comfortable outside. Despite the sandwiches letting me down ever-so-slightly, I was still loving the coffee and cuban pastries very much; but my last (2) visits have really let me down... One time was a few months back where we ordered a variety of empanadas based upon the girl telling us which each of them were in the display... ham/cheese, chicken, beef, et cetera... but when we went to eat them we had a bag of all beef empanadas. At least the coffee was good. Recently, we were going stir-crazy, so a very cautious and careful get-away during Covid times was in order; we pulled up to Denny's on our way to the Lower Keys to grab our coffee and some croquetas... the signs on the door stated the expected per the CDC... MASKS MUST BE WORN ! We ordered and handed over our money to pay BUT if I had noticed something before we paid, I would've handed the bag of goodies and cups of coffee back to the girl and say "no thanks" as the guy sitting in front of the cash register (assume to possibly be manager or owner) was not wearing a mask. read more

Nice mom and pop place. One of the many little Cuban joints sprouting up in the mid and upper Keys. Excellent coffee! Good pastries. Didn't get to try the mains, but the steam table looked like it had some dishes that were el mejor sabor! The dining room is clean and basic decor, but in your classic hole-in-the wall you let the cooking do the talking. Pinecrest bakery, down the street, has been my Latin go-to, but the coffee is likely to sway me over here, at least on one of the ways into or out of the Keys. read more

Stopped by for coffee on the way to Key West. The cortadito is amazing! It's basically espresso with sugar & milk. Comes in a small cup, just the right size for me. They also have fresh, homemade pastries. The guava pastey and the pineapple rum cake were so good with coffee. Friendly owners. Highly recommend for a pit stop! read more

On our way out of the keys, my husband wanted some Cuban food since we were so close to Cuba. We saw Denny's on the other side of the road on Key Largo, and made a Uturn. We were the only people at the location, seated, but it seemed like they had a brisk business with take out. I ordered the Ropa Vieja and my husband ordered the Chicken and Yellow Rice (they were out of Yellow Rice). The food was good, the ropa vieja was delicious, the sauce was amazing. Great Cuban diner in the Florida keys. I ate there a bunch of times during my trip to key west. The first time I got the Pollo asado...it was a juicy roasted chicken that came with potatoes, plantains, and rice. For $10 bucks it was a great deal. Other items I tried were the Cuban colada, empanadas, and croissants for breakfast. These were all delicious. I also tried the Cubano sandwich which was okay...there were other items that were better. On the last day I got to try the sugar cane drink which was grinded in front of me. A pretty tasty beverage! I didn't get the name of one of the owners there but she was also nice and friendly. She tried to explain some of the cuban dishes I wasn't aware of. I recommend trying this place for anyone visiting the Florida Keys. read more

Generally, I stop at another place for my Cuban sandwiches. After eating here, I realized why I stop at the other place for my sandwiches. I got the Cuban, It was a Cuban in name only. The pork had good flavor, but that was about all it had going for it. A sliver of ham so thin that I had to look several times to make sure it was there. Mustard was also non existent. So basically, it was a pork sandwich. The black beans tasted like someone had just opened a can and poured them into a hot tray. Service forgot that I had even ordered, so my beans sat on the counter until two other people asked if I had ordered. It was my first time in the Florida Keys and stumbled upon this gem! The large awning outside caught my eye and I am glad I decided to pay a visit. You HAVE to go! It is a cozy restaurant with delicious authentic Cuban dishes. I tried mariquitas (plantain chips) and they were sooo delicious! They were freshly made and the garlic sauce was on point. I also got ropa vieja (shredded beef) with congri and yuca. I enjoyed every single bite of my meal. You can really taste the pride they have in their food. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly and made great recommendations.
