I had a really good impression of these folks until they decided to overcharge me for service that was covered under my insurance. I want to preface this review by saying this: I liked the dentist and I'm reasonably happy with the service provided by them. *HOWEVER*, I would say that their billing policy and personnel needs substantial revamping before I would be willing to change my view on them. First, after being being informed that my insurance covers the entire amount for a simple teeth cleaning, I received a bill asking to pay more money for a procedure that insurance typically covers. Second, and more hilariously, the person who called me back after I called to complain about this unusual charge decided to take any discussion of this charge as a personal attack on her, whined loudly that she doesn't need to put up with this (i.e. a discussion of how their business practices is unethical), brought up issues unrelated to any charging decisions that they provided upfront and hung up in a huff. Usually, when I have differences of opinion with a business, I go out of my way to convey my displeasure to the people involved in that business and then pay any monies owed as long as the charge isn't usurious. If I am unhappy with them, I just stop using their services. In this case, I find that the snarky response of the person who called me, her unhelpful demeanor, and the whole clutching-her-pearls aspect of the phone call off putting. It looks like this person is famous in other reviews of this place. If she is an employee, the owners are screwing up. If she is the owner, god help your establishment. Given this place one star. I've been going to Dental associates since high school. Mostly out of convenience. I called to reschedule an appointment that fell during the week. Was told they're only available Monday -Friday now all of a sudden w zero notification to current patients. so very inconvenient for those who are in the work force Monday -Friday (8-4 or 9-5 or any day time work) you just will not be able to fit it in your schedule and taking a day off for dental cleaning in this economy just doesn't make sense. Very nice new office. Easy to locate. Parking ample. Staff always the best pretty much. Metra at the desk a sweetheart and always willing to help with quesitons.. The work always good. Pretty much. Most of us can't afford perfect and one tooth I was told to remove and I did not. Use my discretion. My only problem is cost. This has been an issue and me a patient over 60 years and now the costs appear higher. I would want not other for cleanings than Demetra hygentist the best and Hootnick craftsman on dental work. In today's world there are high earners. I have never been one such a person. So try to take care of our teeth can be a big challenge. Some just plain don't do it and I get it. They have no clue what they are doing, in terms of running a dental practice. The woman with the heavy accent is very rude, and to add insult to injury, misinformed. They gave my husband a really hard time when trying to use his dental coverage (through me) and we have the highest/top tier coverage offered. Even though they had ALL THE INFORMATION THEY NEEDED to file a claim, forced him to pay out-of-pocket for a cleaning. I will be filling a provider complaint with my insurance company - getting seen by the dentist is stressful enough, without adding this nonsense to the mix. Bottom line - go elsewhere. read more

They have the worst of the lot dentists and make sure to get a second opinion before getting anything done per their suggestions (unless it's like a painful wisdom tooth which needs removal). These money grabbing people over here will suggest you procedures that you don't even need! No wonder they will take absolutely any kind of insurance you have! And on top of it they have a really rude receptionist (the blonde one); she might be fine though if you don't ask her anything. read more

Update: It was indeed a computer error. After I called them (they didn't call me), the very helpful office manager was able to clear up the misunderstanding and elucidate the situation. I'm not bumping them up any more, though, because the billing associate who originally called me was so freaking combative, rude and clueless. Like Flora, the office manager, said, I shouldn't have had to talk to her to get the answers I needed. --- STAY AWAY FROM HERE. My dentist, Dr. Taylor, was fine and nice. She deserves a star. I was a patient here when I was a kid. Unbeknown to me, my parents chose to stop bringing us to this practice because their billing department is a tangled mess. I don't know if it's their software or what. But I read the favorable reviews on yelp and thought I'd give it another try. Well.... I filled out new forms with my insurance and financial information and signed statements saying that I would financially guarantee the costs of my treatment. However, they didn't delete the old record that my parents had on me. Two weeks later my mom and asks why I've been going to Dental Associates. Turns out that they messed up on billing her ten years ago and she ended up having to pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket. (She works in government. Ten years ago, her coverage was pretty darn good.) THEY SENT HER A BILL for my visit in January 2009 stating that that the charges were over 31 days old when in fact my appointment was only 15 days before that. I was beyond confused at this point and checked my insurance -- yup, they had already filed a claim and the claim had been paid four days before the bill to my mom. So I called the practice on Tuesday about this and spelled out clearly that CHARGES THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN PAID ON MY ACCOUNT (which had a one account number) HAD ALSO BEEN MAILED to my parents' account (another account number). The woman who received my phone call required repeated explanations and then thoroughly denied the POSSIBILITY that my visit could have been double-billed. I brought up the fact that my parents had stopped coming to this practice precisely because of the magnitude of their billing staff's incompetence, and that they had to pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket because of mistakes that they REFUSED to correct. She said: "That would NEVER happen." (Ha -- I said. Sorry, I'm going to believe my mom over you, not only because she's MY MOM but also because you guys have messed up so badly with me!) Finally, when I started getting angry and walked her through step by step so that the issue was absolutely crystal clear and she could no longer respond to me using circular logic about how the bill was correct, she cut me off and said that she was "confused" (DUH) and that the manager would have to get back to me. I haven't gotten a call yet. If they send my parents a second bill for the follow up visit I had for a filling, I'm going to break something. Or someone. read more

The staff is so friendly and nice. I can't speak to the billing process as I have never had any issues - everything has been processed through my insurance without any hassle. The one thing that stands out about my experience is the following anecdote. I have to take medicine before I go to the dentist and the last time I came here I had forgotten and realized I forgot on the short walk down the street. I felt awful and was worried that I would have to pay a fee to re-schedule. The hygienist and the front desk staff were so understanding. They re-scheduled my appointment for the following week and called in a prescription for me right away. I didn't have to pay a fee and left feeling relieved that everything worked out. read more

The reason I gave this place 5 stars is: EVERYONE is friendly and is really interested in what's going on with you, what you do, etc. I even met a few dentists and hygienists that knew people that I knew. I found out things about lost friends that I didn't know. This is a large practice. You can request to keep the same hygienist and dentist if you wish. If you have specific schedule needs, you may need to see different ones. Forget your appointment 6 months out? Don't worry. They call you before your appointment to remind you. Are they on time? 95% of the time. Easy in and out. They do a good job. They will explain things to you and advise you on better proactive care. They even have coupons and free samples. I'm now hooked on my electric toothbrush. They're very thorough. Top notch care here! How to get there? They are off a bus line, but not sure what. They have a private free lot. read more

I am the happiest client of this practice. I also made my husband to come to this office and my 3 y.o. daughter has become their client, too. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to all people I know, and one of them even drove here from Chestnut Hill, because...let me explain. OK, try to experiment, ask anybody you know if they like their dentist and would recommend him to you. When I was looking for a dentist ( a GOOD dentist ) I asked EVERYBODY. Most people said they would love to find a better dentist, some hated their doctor or office, some said that their doctor is just ok, but not good enough to recommend. So, I just choose this office because it is close to my house and it looked modern and big. So, I gave it a shot. This turned out to be the best decision of my life regarding health care. So, the last dentist I've seen (from Brookline) before I came to this office looked at me and my teeth and wrote down $48 000. It was his estimate for doing crowns on ALL teeth. He was a celebrity doctor, who did teeth for some guys from Celtics and Miss America. I got scared and have never seen him again. Dr. Hootnick at Dental Associates has never been pushy and never scared me. He just said, let's start from what we need to do first. Here are your priorities and other problems can wait. As a result, I have become a very regular patient for over a year. Everybody in the office treats you with a big respect. They are always very nice and extremely helpful. Once, someone on the front desk spent 2 hours (!) on the phone to help me find out some information from my insurance company. This is just one example, but I can name many. You will not believe it, but I am happy when I go to see my dentist. It is a very new feeling to me. My doctor ( dr. Hootnick ) is THE BEST and THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE doctor in the world. He is a GREAT PROFESSIONAL and he ALWAYS chooses the best option for you and explains why. My husband sees another doctor, dr. Taylor, because she works in the afternoon,. He is extremely happy, too. He thanked me many times for making him to switch his dentist. The office is VERY MODERN and VERY CLEAN. They have a lot of the newest types of machines that other offices do not have (from mine and my friends and family experience) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this office and all doctors. Please save yourself and don't go here! I had been a patient for about 20 years. So many dentists in and out of there. Everyone covering everyone elses asses. When I finally lost 2 crowns in one month, I got concerned. I asked to speak to the top guy there and they sent me to the guy who owns the place. I explained that I had been current with cleanings every six months and that I had bleeding and pain in a tooth and the crown that fell out had a brown spot on it. The owner (Wolfe) said he could fix that. He ground off the brown spot on the crown that had fallen out and glued it back in my mouth. I said there must be a problem if there is a brown spot on that crown. Then I knew he thought I was stupid and he could get away with anything. with all those exams and cleaning and me doing good home care and complaining about pain and bleeding, they could not find a problem until my crowns fell out. And when they did, they just glued it back!!!! With your dental care as well as medical, I suggest getting very involved and make sure you never go to one place for a very long time. I have had a lot of dental work and it is my most expensive cost besides mortgage. I grew up without flouride in the water so I've had lots of filling, braces twice (once top, then later bottoms) and 5 crowns and 3 root canals. I kept finding that I was passed from one dentist to another. The reason I found out when the internet came out and I could do lots of online research. They take dentists who are in transition. For instance, my last dentist was required to get reeducation credit by the the board of dental licensure. I don't know what he did but he had to leave Marblehead, MA and come to Quincy. (Hootnick) Now that I am with another dentist, I find out that I have bone loss and need an implant. With all those x-rays, they could never find the problem. Right where it was bleeding, The x-rays I've been shown by 2 specialists show a clear dark spot that shows my root canal is probably cracked and leaking. This was never brought to my attention, probably covered up because they had not done a good job previously. My advise. Get your cleanings at the regular dentist, then go get your own specialist somewhere else if you need a root canal or crown or perio. Do not accept a recommendation because the specialist will not be able to say anything bad even if truthful about the referring dentist. Insurance covers getting a specialist's opinion. The dentist who has an inhouse periodontist or endodontist is getting a kickback from this so go get your own. Flora is the office manager. She handles any complaints and treated me very badly. She is like a lawyer but has no degree. Don't go to these rejects who are only there for a short time until they can get trained or get their licenses cleaned up. They have no reason to care or treat you like they want to keep you since they switch practices so often. This place is not respected in the area I have found out. read more

The staff here has been constantly changing over the last few years and its gotten worse. The Billing Manager really gave me attitude over my primary insurer and my secondary insurer. And let me say this, I have great coverage. She constantly sends me bills without explanations and if I question her she becomes impatient. The dentist themselves have been there for years and I don't understand why. They can be very testy at times. And if they aren't happy with you they start to play head games. On my last appointment I did nothing but wait around for him to come back into the room as he would leave and took his time coming back. It was so bad that the procedure which should have taken about 2.5 hours ended up being over 4. And the work he performed was terrible. Caused me a lot of pain and he was very slow to relieve it. A Dentist who is listed under the ADA makes a voluntary oath to Self-Governance, Do No Harm, Do Good, Fairness, Truthfulness. Believe me, he did none of these things. And my feeling is he could have said NO when I first inquired about having the work done but he didn't and because of this he has caused me a lot of problems. I will not be returning. read more
