This is going to be a long post because it's a little complicated. It is to EDUCATE other people with dental insurance of ANY kind. My husband and went to see Dr. Santiago, a very good dentist, earlier this year. We had our X-rays and exam. While we are far from kids, he taught us a few things about oral care in 2023. Good stuff. We like and respect him. (From a dental perspective, Dr. Santiago referred us to an endodontist. He advised me I had an abscess (zero pain, so it came as a surprise) and my husband had an infection. We went to the endodontist and took care of that. Additionally, my husband had one cavity; I had no new cavities.) KEEP READING for what's wrong with this picture: The issue isn't him. It's a two-fold one that is tied to one of the women who sets appointments as well as the aggressive sales push to get patients to have treatments not covered by benefits. It was when we said "no" to that multiple times that the attitude of the woman in front began to change to nothing short of rude. We were told we needed "deep cleans" that cost about $300 each. That's $600 for two people on a fixed income. Nope. We will continue to brush, floss, rinse and repeat. We also asked for quotes as to what our piece would cost. That seemed to be met as a surprising request. Weird but whatever. Worth noting: This year, I had the shocking death of my brother, a cancer scare that was shattering and a beloved sick dog. By the time the dog took sick - which sadly was on the day we were dressed and ready to go back to Dr. Santiago and #DentalCareKapolei When I called "the woman at the front desk" that day, I was indeed agitated, tearful and somewhat abrupt. Yes, I was frantic because we needed to get out the door to the vet. She was literally trying to get me to reschedule while I was saying "I can't talk to you know but I will reschedule.". I did not give a warm "aloha" and say goodbye. I wasn't there. I received a text from #DentalCareKapolei the day after our last minute cancellation. I then called back Wednesday. Holy crap. I said hello and said who I was. She already knew because of my voice. While I believed she was looking at where to reschedule was, there was a moment of silence. I took it as a time to apologize. With my husband as witness in the room while she was on speaker, I said these words "I'm sorry for the other day. I was very upset and it's just been a hard year." More silence and then - NO acknowledgement of my genuine apology, and she says "You hung up on me." She was clearly enraged that I disrespected her. That rage was prompted by an apology. Is this who you want sitting at your front desk interacting with patients? Not usually, but this is the norm at #DentalCareKapolei It gets worse. In a voice that can only be described as defiant, she advised that we would each be charged $50 for the last minute cancellation. While I understand this as a business person, the delivery of this information, and the nastiness in which it was delivered was nothing short of unprofessional and ugly. Clearly punitive. She then HUNG UP ON ME. I called back and was met by the other voice who answers phones there. Her name might be Carol. She is totally patient, professional and kind. I let her know we were not coming back. She said OK and we both said "good bye". Getting decent dental care should not have to be met with sheer rudeness and a money grab. Hire better support staff. Train them better. And maybe not prescribe fancy mouthwashes and $50 toothpaste to your patients. To quote Ashly M in another Yelp review: "NEVER AGAIN". read more

AVOID THIS DENTIST!! Going to the dentist used to be an enjoyable experience for my family until we found this dental care. This dentist, DR. SCOTT ARAKAWA, is INCOMPETENT and SHOULD NOT BE PRACTICING. He also has an ATROCIOUS BEDSIDE MANNER, not greeting or acknowledging his patients as he did with one of my sons. He should NEVER clean anyone's teeth. My husband and sons experienced UNBEARABLE PAIN and BLEEDING as he scraped their teeth so brutally, hurting their gums. Yet, all the while apologizing repeatedly to my husband and son while he continued relentlessly scrapping with abandonment! He was apologizing because he saw all the BLOOD. Upon rinsing, my son stated the water was completely red from the blood. My son also thinks he saw a chunk of his gums on the instrument. I now fear my family might have GUM DAMAGE from his cleaning. Even several days after they are experiencing PAIN and can't chew their food because it hurts too much. This is completely UNACCEPTABLE! I should have followed my gut instinct upon arrival to this practice from the start. I regret finding this office and will be looking for new dental care ASAP. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!! I was uneasy about going to a new dentist after having a bad experience in the past. Dr. Arakawa and the staff at Dental Care Kapolei were amazing, and make you feel so at ease. They all made me feel comfortable and my teeth feel great. I give this place a 5+ stars. Dr. Arakawa is the best. read more

We had an unplanned visit during a trip to Hawaii over Thanksgiving. The office agreed to see us to determine the severity of my wife's Dental issue. The staff was great and expressed empathy to my wife. They saw us on Thanksgiving Day. They gave us a recommendation and we received additional care at home based on their input. This has been my family dentist for the past 20 years. Consistent with having friendly staff and Drs. Excellent at keeping our teeth and gums healthy. Minimal to no waiting in the lobby for appointments. I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I HATE GOING TO THE DENTIST! I really do... which is why I haven't gone for a while. Which means I've let cavities go unfilled and I really shouldn't have. So, in my experience, that means when I finally do go to the dentist, I am going to hear about it in a condescending and annoying manner. I have been having pain in my lower right molar. It got really bad today, so I called for an appointment. When I got there (early), they did not give me the runaround. As soon as I sat down, my name was being called. They knew I was in pain and got right to the point: X-Rays, then almost immediately following, the Dentist. The news wasn't good, but it was handled very professionally, with compassion and no lecture about the state of my oral hygiene. Appointments made, prescriptions issued - all in less than half an hour. Amazing. I'm keeping this dentist. read more

I would not recommend this dentistry to anyone. With my past two experiences being there I wasn't quite happy with their service. The receptionist are quite friendly & helpful however their team members who work in the back aren't such a pleasure to be around, at least for me from last two visits. Each time I went I was seen for a review to figure what the problem is. Then they see if they're able to work on your tooth that day if not you have to schedule an appointment for another say to WORK ON IT. Now they had double booked me both times & it was quite disturbing I must say. I had a tooth that I needed to have a root canal done on but they couldn't work on it that day, I couldn't get seen until a month or two later but i coukdnt wait that long so I got it done elsewhere. Then I came back to put a cap on it & they still were unable to work on my tooth then. & at the same time I had another tooth that was bothering me but again they couldn't work on it. They did xrays and all but nothing further was done. No work on any of my teeth! I'm not bringing my kids here even if my husband is being seen here! I'm sorry but their service sucks! read more

I have really enjoyed coming to the dentist again! The staff is very friendly and welcoming. It is nice to walk into a place and they know who you are! They are very accommodating and will go out if their way to make sure your insurance will cover a procedure before having it done. They offer a variety of payment plans which is also great. I would have to say though, their customer service is awesome, the office is very clean and that makes it all the better!! read more

Affordable with insurance, clean facility and very up to date tools! The office staff is friendly, and so are the dentists. They remember my name even though I only come every six months and actually remember little details about you to make small talk which is very personable. There are four dentists at this office. The place has newer equipment, and even the x-rays you take go straight to a computer facing your chair so you can see your x-rays within a minute! There is also a television at each cleaning station and you can change the channel if you want while getting your teeth cleaned. The dental hygenist I have is always friendly, and takes her time to do a good job on my teeth cleaning. Usually I will stay for literally one hour to do a full cleaning. I feel they do the job well, and you don't feel scammed or rushed for what you pay for. They are also gentle on your mouth/teeth and I never wait too long when I have an appointment. They are always on schedule and on time. read more

It's my dentist & my kids. Their are two doctors here that go by your insurance. The staff is so approachable, helpful, informative, friendly. The office is so neat and clean, I actually enjoy myself in the waiting area than from other doctor's offices. Haha. Also, the TV remote is always available to change the channel. Haha! Worse dentist I've ever been to. On top of the bad service. The head doctors try's to make excuses for his his workers actions. NEVER AGAIN.

Over heard one of the time hygienist talking to one of the staff members who is new to the practice about how she didn't catch one of the patients treatment or x-ray's and why it wasn't on the schedule. Heard her telling her was she actually looking or if she knows what she's doing. I thought that was not professional at all. BEST DENTAL CLEANING EVER!! After my first experience, my teeth never felt cleaner! The doctor actually did my first cleaning HIMSELF!! He even thoroughly reviewed my xrays with me, explaining each thing he saw. No other dentist office took the time to chart EACH tooth, HAND SCALE EACH tooth, ULTRASONIC SCALE EACH tooth, FLOSS between and BEHIND EACH tooth AND POLISH EACH tooth. They even let me do the suction which every tech before would RUB against my lip and cause an ulcer after. They are very gentle and do an efficiently GREAT job! I felt like I was there for a long time but it was only about half an hour from check-in, xrays, the FULL cleaning, a doctors exam, and check-out. The tech also gave me important tips to help keep my teeth in even better shape! Besides the cleaning, my whole experience was PROFESSIONAL from when I walked in until I walked out the door. The receptionist kept me informed with the status of my appointment. Even during check out, she also kept me informed with each step she was doing from scheduling my next check up to processing my payment. AMAZING!! They were able to fit my wife in today but wasn't able to perform the root canal needed. If you're in terrible pain and need to get the procedure done right away especially if dealing with your back molars, best be looking for a dentist that does can do it at the same appointment. Otherwise, they will refer you out to another dentist that has better equipment to deal with your back molars. Otherwise, if you're just looking for cleaning and basic care. I have visited many Dental Offices over the last 30 years and I have personally gotten to know the Doctors, and all the Staff thru many, many visits. I always feel the genuine concern for my well being and health from everyone that works there, and the equipment they use for treatments and care are always being upgraded to reflect a comfortable esthetic, clean area for the least amount of anxiety. My 7-year-old and I had our teeth cleansed. When I was about to pay at the front desk, the front desk said that 4 of my son's teeth needed to have sealant. It was odd because the dentist did not tell me, did not explain why and how when we were inside of the office. I wondered why i was told by the front desk, not by the dentist. Anyway, the front desk said that I only needed to pay $8 after the insurance coverage. Since it was affordable, we scheduled an appointment for my son to go back in a week. When we went back, the front desk told me to sign the authorization. Then, they took my son in the office right away. I waited right across the front desk. After 5-10 mins, the front desk told me that she made a mistake last week; she said it should be $60, not $8. What could I say? What could I do? They had already started the process with my son. Luckily, I can afford to pay the $60. I am not happy with how they handled the situation. They should have told me before I sign anything, before they took my son into the office, or even before they started doing my son's teeth. They waited a week, waited after i signed the paper, waited after my son was already on the dental chair, then, the told me about their mistake. I will not go back to this dental center. read more

BOTTOM LINE: Great front office staff/hygienists, sadistic uncaring dentist. SO sad to be writing this. I have gone to Dental Care Kapolei for at least five years. There are two primary dentists that I have seen there, Dr. Arakawa and Dr. Thompson. I had no issues with Dr. Arakawa, but my experiences with Dr. Thompson were bad enough that I am never going back to DCK. I want to do a realistic review here so I will list the good and the bad. The bad first. THE BAD: There should be no pain involved in dentistry DURING the procedure. Dr. Thompson continued to work on me even after I told him that the area was not fully numbed. He continued working on me...for two hours. TWO HOURS. I was jumping out of the chair in pain frequently, conservatively a half dozen times. I have seen him two times, I am a fool. The first time I chalked it up to lack of pain communication on my part. This second time he continued to drill me even after I told him there was pain. He is not a tender, caring doctor. He is a construction worker for your face. He has other people lined up waiting and wants to get through with you so he can hammer away on the next person. WORST. DENTAL. EXPERIENCE. EVER. TWICE. Additionally, the crown that he (Dr. Thompson) put on did not seal properly at the bottom so bacteria and food particles continually got caught under my crown. Within a year the tooth decayed so badly I had to go back in, have it removed and now have to get a $1200 full replacement tooth. (That was yesterday's 2nd nightmare experience). I have had a root canal (which is usually a nightmare experience) at another dentist and had NO PAIN AT ALL. So I know that other dentists can do it. This guy is a hack. THE GOOD: The front staff are awesome. Seriously fantastic. They take the time to answer your questions, send timely reminders via text and phone call. They are organized and helpful, and were very compassionate when I told them that I would not be returning to DCK. I am sad to leave there. The hygienists are awesome too! They are efficient, quick, kind and wonderful. They offer great and helpful advice while taking good care of you. One informed me of a correlation between teeth plaque and heart disease (its the same kind of plaque...who knew) so if you get plaque on your teeth often and easily there may be plaque build up else where. Someone needs to send the hygienists to dental school. The office manager Roxanne is great. She takes the time to listen to customers and address any concerns they may have. Decided to find a new dental office and decided to check this place out after reading a review from another yelper on another dental office in Kapolei (Gentle Dental). So glad I did, because this is the best dental office I've been to ever. Staff don't talk to you like you're 5, the place is clean, everyone's is friendly and ACTUALLY gentle, and with insurance, it's not too bad. What I also liked is even though I was a new patient, everything was able to get done in one day, where as the previous dental office you go in for just your x rays and then have a consult, and come back another day for your cleaning. Seems like a way to make more money off office co-prays if you ask me. This place is great and I'd recommend anyone looking for a dentist in the Kapolei area, to come here first. read more

All I did was call to make an appointment and because the person that answered the phone was extremely rude, I told her I would call back to schedule an appointment. Which I'm not going to do! Her attitude and tone of voice seemed like I was a bother just to call and make an appointment. Unprofessional. Which is sad because majority of my family goes there and they love the dentist there. My experience here is normally ok the receptionists is always awesome and always helpful 5 stars for that on the other hand the Dentist one in particular SANTIAGO is rude no personality or facial expressions what so ever WALKS AROUND LIKE A ZOMBIE.. everytime I come in it's always fast for him to see my kids and when I say kids I mean all 5..I come in today for my girls appt which her first appt I had was back in April and I had to reschedule I asked to be rescheduled with another dentist for an earlier date they tell me no cuz other dentist dosent wanna touch what another dentist did I said ok that's fine but there only abalibilty was 4 months later today..8/18 he then tells me ohh she needs a root canal and she was sapose to take care her tooth and you missed her appt back in April like it was my fault that I couldn't get an earlier appt.. WRONG move buddy nobody tells you to only come in 3 days out the week and make like its my fault I had to wait 4 months to see you again that's your problem and not mine..maybe you should work more days or do more crap when your in so people wouldn't have to wait 2-4 months for another appt..last I seen you you should have done something about that cavity that you found instead of making me wait and come back..ohh but wait you want my insurance to pay you every time I come but you can't do shit..
