He rebuilt the transmission in our truck and when finished instead of just saying he's done, he test drove it and didn't like the way it shifted so changed more parts and it shifts better than when it was brand new. Took my truck in for a transmission service. Fluid and filter. No big deal. Everything was great and the job seemed to have been done right. A few weeks later I go to replace my brakes and I'm looking at the underside. The transmission cooler lines are leaking like crazy. I look further and they are rusted through about to break. How the hell does a transmission shop not notice this or say anything!!! Like did anyone inspect the vehicle or make note, because if I was told then that they needed to be replaced I would have. Replaced the lines and now it's fine, however I wasted money having them change the fluid since a lot of it leaked out. I gave one star because of the lack of caring to inspect, granted the work they did was fine. It's the fact that the bigger problem was never disclosed to me. read more

When I was preparing for a trip and got an oil change at a nearby Jiffy Lube, they told me I had a transmission leak they couldn't address. When I asked where they recommended, they said all their technician got to Denville Transmission because they are not only excellent but TOTALY HONEST. They fixed my leak and refilled my tranny. FOR FREE!!! The owner Bob told me I would be ok for 2500 miles and come back after trip. Well I waited until I drove over 5000 miles and car drove like tranny was shot. Managed to limp in. They put it on their computer and told me no tranny codes came up. They thought it was a clogged catalytic converter. It was! This confirmed it to me and why I am writing this review. Exceptional service! I brought my car to Denville Transmission for a second opinion. The first garage I brought it to misdiagnosed my Jeep as to needing a new trans, I brought it to Denville Transmission, having had another good experience a few years earlier with another car. They promptly realized there was not a problem with the trans and actually drove my car to another service station for me-NO CHARGE for this or the evaluation. The garage they recommended was also excellent The repairs had to do with the fuel pump and gas tank. There actually ARE good and honest people in this world, even when it comes to business! One morning on my way to work, I tried to back out of my driveway and realized I couldn't switch gears on my stick car. I panicked. My husband had already left for work, and we were new to the area - I didn't know a mechanic. My dad suggested I have the car towed to Bergen County, where there was a mechanic I knew. I'm glad I didn't listen to him. I drove the car in first gear down to Denville Transmission. From the second I pulled in they were wonderful to me - listening to the problem, calming me down, giving me a reasonable price, and even driving me to work (instead of calling a cab for me). Summary: The owner, Rob, and the team at Denville Transmission (DT) are honest, knowledgeable, and professional. I never felt like they were trying to push unnecessary services and they completed the work earlier than they originally estimated. Details: I noticed that oil was leaking from the front differential of my SUV so I contacted DT on a Tue to see when I could come in for service. They said I could drop it off any time that I was available and I didn't need an appointment. I came by Tue evening to drop off the vehicle and early Wed afternoon I got a call from Rob with the initial diagnosis. He indicated that a seal on the differential was in need of replacement. He estimated the cost to be about $600 and it would be ready on Thu. I was pleased with the estimate and approved the work. First thing Thu morning Rob called me and said they found a problem with the differential. While replacing the seal, they performed a complete inspection of the differential unit and found a crack in the case. He informed me that it was going to be an expensive job, but he felt it was worth it for my situation because the vehicle was in very good shape and has low mileage. I told him I did plan on keeping the SUV for many years and that I wanted to proceed. Rob offered two repair options. The first option was $3000 and he would rebuild/repair the existing unit (24 labor hours). The second option was $3500 which would involve the complete replacement of the transmission and differential assembly (18 labor hours). He recommended the replacement option because it would include a 2 year/24k mile warranty on the transmission/differential assembly. While $3500 was much more than I was planning to spend for this repair, I selected the second option to replace the complete assembly. Rob estimated that it would be ready by the following Tuesday morning and he would call if there were any updates. Friday afternoon Rob called to let me know the work was complete ahead of schedule and I could come by to pick up my SUV. The cost was $3500 as quoted plus tax which brought the total cost to about $3800. While this cost is high compared to the initial estimate for the seal replacement, based on my research this is a fair price overall for the complete replacement of the transmission and differential unit. Assuming a standard rate of $80/hour, 18 hours of labor is roughly $1400 and the price I've seen for a replacement transmission and transfer case is approximately $2500. If I went to a dealer for the work, I'd probably add 20% or more to those costs. I feel comfortable that the cost I paid was reasonable and less than what I would have paid at other garages. The repair was completed ahead of schedule and working with Rob was a pleasure. I would recommend DT for future transmission repair needs. read more
