Depanneur is an extremely nice corner shop/bodega in Williamsburg that's a little away from the hustle and bustle of Bedford Avenue yet at the same time not too far away. Depanneur sells a whole variety of upmarket condiments, cookies, crackers, charcuterie etc. (You wouldn't do a weekly shop here but if you wanted to put together a fancy picnic or gift basket you would be in the right place.) They also sell a small range of cookware items and books and of course this being 'the 'burg' there's quite a few artisanally made 'hipster groceries' such as pickles, bitters and granola. The store itself is spacious with rustic decor and if you want to eat here there are a few window seats inside and bistro tables and chairs outside. If you are going to eat here help yourself to drinks from the self-service fridges - they have a great selection of unusual sodas and waters - and order a made to order sandwich at the counter from the menu on the wall. If you don't want a sandwich there is also a tempting array of baked goodies including cookies, breakfast pastries and quiches and a full range of coffees and teas available. I usually go for lunch during the week when it's not too busy and usually have to wait about five minutes for my order and although the sandwiches are a little pricey they aren't extortionate as they are totally delicious! The ingredients are of exceptional quality and the sandwiches are well assembled so that you get a little of each component in every bite. The baguettes they use are very good also, crispy and chewy but not at all dry or tough, and the ingredient combinations are always spot on with flavours that complement each other. All in all, I love Depanneur (luckily I've not experienced the slow service that others have). This place was great when they first opened. The staff used to be really friendly not like the angry hipsters they have taking your order now. The food went downhill. I used to order a tasty ham&cheese Croissant that came toasted.lNow I order the same and it comes out half cold and the other half luke warm on what taste like day old croissant. Coffee is delicious here!! Sometimes the lines are a little long sometimes but the wait is worth it. The croissants are delicious ! They have a lot of different products to purchase. Particularly for making mixed drinks. Like ginger beer, spiced old fashioned mix etc. The cheese section makes me so hungry even when I'm full! read more

I used to go into this place every day for cold brew; they were one of the few places that was open during covid, and their cold brew was good (and sizable). also, the service was, and still is, great. but then, one day, the cold brew tasted completely different. either they changed their formulation or started watering the coffee down, but it was clearly no longer cold brew. just weak iced coffee, at best. other regular customers that I knew noticed the same thing. the sandwiches are also pretty good, as is the selection of gourmet food, but even considering what it is, you will be shocked and horrified by the prices. if you want to spend $30 on small piece of cheese, be my guest, but I'll pass. read more

I went there for breakfast this morning and ordered an egg sandwich with tomato, cheese and avocado. I received a sandwich in ciabatta bread with very little food inside. I'm fine with a bad sandwich but this one cost $9.50. If they are going to charge an additional $2 for avocado please put more than 2 thin slices of avocado. I understand overpriced Brooklyn restaurants that sell artisanal chocolates at outrageous prices, so i know what I'm dealing with at a place like this. But I expect the sandwich to have a reasonable amount of ingredients in it. They should either fix their pricing or put food in their sandwiches. That's all I got. This place is really hit or miss with quality control for the price. I've been here around 4 times and it's literally 50/50. Today I came and asked for the rosemary ham sandwich but just sub for turkey instead of ham. It took awhile for them to make because they had a few people in front of me and when I received the sand which it literally had ONE slice of Turkey and a million pickles. I would've brought it back to complain but I was on a lunch break and didn't have the time. I've had turkey sandwiches from here before and they were never so skimpy. To add insult to injury the sandwich already costs $15 but I'm pretty sure I was charged an extra $2 for the substitution which is outrageous considering it was barely any turkey on the sandwich. I still ate it because I was hungry and it tasted great but I doubt I'll come back because it's a waste of money. read more

I love the space! As a cafe owner in Boston I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the layout and selection. Some of these reviews blow my mind!! People be thankful this business is opening and able to function at any capacity. Some customers have no clue how hard it is to balance a staff, vendors, pay roll, health regulations, customers etc etc This is an impossible time and these guys are doing great things. Also pricing reviews!!! I got two cold brews and a sandwich and thought the price was on point. People once more understand we are not massive corporations that receive huge discounts from our vendors. Small mom n pop shops have to adjust pricing based on 10-20 factors unlike the big box stores. This place is not getting rich off its grocery selection i can tell you that!!! I've been to Depanneur 3-4 times at this point. Here's the good news: it's always fun to check out all the bougie food products, tchotchkes, and cool-looking people there. There are lots of great sandwich and breakfast options (although they're tough to read on the chalkboard menu). I've really enjoyed the hot cereal, avocado toast, and turkey sandwich. The coffee is from Toby's Estate, which makes me happy. My main problem with this place and the reason I don't come here more often is the long wait time for food. It always takes a surprisingly long time to get my food, even when it isn't crowded. Yesterday, I ordered a tuna sandwich (which was meh) and it took about 15 minutes to make. A friend visiting from London was majorly craving a deli sandwich - apparently those are hard to find across the pond. But instead of taking our chances on a sketchy bodega, we decided to class it up a bit and go to this fancy version of a corner store. Before noon on a Saturday there was already a long line winding down the store of people wanting these delicious sandos. I got the turkey and the roast beef to share with my husband, and I have to say that I wish I got two turkeys because it was SO good! But there's much more to this place than sandwiches. They have every fancy food item you never knew you wanted: upscale Bloody Mary mix, designer chocolates, and beautiful pastries behind the counter. The one downside was the cranky guy manning the espresso machine who barked at us to step away from him (even though there was a counter separating us) as we were waiting for our orders. That, and the sandwiches took a long time to make, though I don't truly blame them for that because like I said it was a very busy day. Hubs picked up breakfast while I was getting a blow out. Loved the latte, so so yummy. I'm guilty of not usually finishing my drinks but I drank this one to the end. Too good not to finish! Just what I needed. I only had a bite or two of our croissant sandwich but I wish we could have tried some of the other options on their menu since they sound good. From Owl's Brew mixers, to Mast Brothers chocolate and many other local foods, DePanneur has much to offer. But, they aren't just a market. They offer a full coffee bar, including espresso, coffee, mochas and more, and a full selection of decadent sandwiches. The sandwiches aren't just thrown together and take time to make, so if you can, order in advance on Seamless (when you get there, you can skip the line to pick up and go). Try the #4 Turkey Sandwich on Multi-Grain (you have to request it). That's our usual and unless there's a special of the day that looks appetizing, I rarely steer away from it. I want to like it, but it's very middling. You'll get a good sandwich then the next time everything is bleh, and it's always overpriced and with the expectation of a nice tip, so "bleh" is not acceptable. There is also a bit of a chip on the shoulder of the workers. I get it, you worked through covid, it wasn't easy. Some of you do early mornings that are hard. But I used to do those jobs to, when I was in my 20s. I feel like they're only polite if you have that hipster Brooklyn look, I often get spoken to like I'm from another species because I don't have that look. Upscale bodega: yes. It is expensive. A Blue Print juice will cost $11 here. It is $7 at Whole Foods by comparison. Convenient: also, yes. It does take longer than it should to wait for a sandwich to get made, but they are good sandwiches. They also have pre-made sandwiches, in case you don't want to wait, but now it's just the #4 or the #9--every day--wow, I've memorized those numbers. I wish they would mix it up a bit. And get a better selection of chips. They are being slightly upstaged now (although it's a walk) by Grocer's Lunch, which has better sandwiches. They have a curio selection of extremely Brooklyn-y things. From creek-washed soemthing-or-other to cool stationery to bucolic-smelling candles to hipster wrapping paper to exotic sodas and beers. They make the best parfaits in town (fresh yogurt, berries, granola), but not worth the raised $9 price tag (go to Ovenly instead). I always get my iced coffee here, if I'm not in the mood for Blue Bottle. Their cheese selection rivals Bedford Cheese Shop and should not be overlooked. This containers of ricotta -- great. Staff is usually friendly. Honestly, it depends who you get. Laughed and joked with some of the dudes. Then had a woman I'd never seen before yell at me for grabbing a pre-made sandwich which they had briefly, randomly moved behind some glass partition (sorry, I thought that's why they are pre-made, so we can grab them!) ...and yeah, be wary of the clientele, as it tends to attract the worst in Brooklyn Entitlement and confused, obnoxious Europeans on a break from one of their N. 3rd tours. That can be exhausting. They have tables outside. The wind will blow everything every which way (you are near the water) but there's always a table to be had. They are expanding, and I am curious to see what that will be like. Croissants and pastries are A+. read more

Outrageously overpriced!! This place has been my go-to lunch and occasional breakfast spot for 3 years. The only reason this review is not a 1 is that the food is solid. I have gotten at least one sandwich every week and I would guess I've spent close to $3k here over the course of the past 3 years. It has always been expensive. But again it is close to me and good food so I've been willing to fork over $17 for a sandwich consistently. I have never received any store credit or free pastry despite my obvious loyalty. No one even knows who I am. I would say that's pretty poor service. And they have now raised their already high sandwich prices by over 30%! Sandwiches are now around $22. I can afford it but why bother when I can still spend $13-$17 pretty much anywhere else. Court street grocers is now far cheaper and the sandwiches are much bigger. Mission sandwiches are similarly priced but that's because one sandwich can feed two people. I will not be going back to Depanneur until they adjust their prices. Curious to see if anyone else decides to do the same and maybe that will force their hand to lower their prices back to what they have been. So disappointing. read more

Stopped in for a delicious gluten-free panini, coffee, and dessert! It did not disappoint. This cute shop is busy but the service is quick and employees are friendly. I ordered a gluten-free panini with prosciutto, mozzarella and fig jam. I asked them to press it with tin foil to avoid cross contamination and use a clean counter / separate gloves, which they did. I was in heaven. The gluten-free bread didn't crumble and was so good, I had to double check it was gluten-free, which it was. Haha. For dessert, I had a gluten-free hazelnut cookie, also scrumptious. Definitely recommend this place! read more

Not a bad neighborhood place to grab a sandwich for lunch or shop for easy grocery. Yes, they are quite pricey, but that's not the reason for a 3-star review. The worse thing about this place is that, near the counter area where they put all their pastries, there's ALWAYS a bunch of flies circulating around, most of the times laying on cookies or croissants, or flying in their kitchen. You know what I hate? A place that makes me feel like a chump. I come here once in a while for overpriced pastries and sandwiches that take an age to prepare. This time, in the brutal cold, I opted for hot cider. I imagined a pot stewing with spices for hours, in keeping with the high-end aspirations of the venue. But no. Out came an unopened gallon of cider from the refrigerator. One cup was poured into a metal jug and then exposed to the short, excoriating heat of the espresso machine's steamer. This is the 3rd time now that my order was wrong and it's honestly ridiculous esp since I paid for "extra". I normally order a number 7 sandwich and pay for extra tomatoes and balsamic.
