We ordered the special which was An 8 oz New York strip. We both ordered it cooked medium. When we got it they were both totally over cooked. Not even a hint of pink. The waitress finally came to check on our meals at least 15 minutes later. We told her both our steaks were way over cooked. We showed her how over cooked they were. Her response was that she "would tell the kitchen". There was no offer of getting us a different steak or compensation on the price. She did offer us a free dessert. Which we declined. There is no way we would roll the dice on a free dessert after we complained about our meal. The last thing we would roll the dice on is the cooking staff not spitting in our food after we lodged a complaint. read more

Pretty good pizza! I absolutely hate canadian bacon makes me gag. But we got the Hawaiian pizza I was sceptical at first but the Canadian bacon was chopped up so fine I never even noticed or tasted it! The prices are pretty ridiculous not going to lie hence the 4 stars but it's at a good location across the street from the lake. Has nice outdoor seating, good bar inside too. read more

Called days ahead for a party of 16. We waited over 30 minutes for our salads, even longer for the food. When the food finally arrived, over half the orders were cold. We were served undercooked fish, barely warm pasta and cold steak. One medium rare steak came well done. Baked potatoes were dry, cold and discolored. The pizza buffet "special" was cold. Even the popovers were cold, dry and oddly spiced. This was a very unappetizing meal and we were very disappointed. read more

Check out the Depot Express Monday through Saturday for the best salad bar in Alexandria. The salad bar is only available for lunch, and a homemade soup accompanies it. The Depot Express is a historic building. It used to be the train depot in Alexandria. Aside from the salad bar, the Depot has a wide selection on its menu. The broiled walleye is fantastic. They are known for their pizza, but I thought it was just OK compared to other things on the menu. read more

I was really looking forward to the depot, given my love of old railway architecture and all the good things I've heard from family over the years.... unfortunately, our experience was largely a disappointment. When we arrived with a party of 8, we were told by the hostess that the best spot for us would be in the bar at one of the round tables. We headed over to the bar area... only to be told by the waitress there that only six people could fit at the table... so we promptly headed back to the hostess. Not a big deal, but unfortunately a sign of things to come... We were then seated at another table designed for six in the upstairs dining room, with two chairs pushed up to the ends. The arrangement was a bit cramped and uncomfortable, but by itself not to horrible. That said, avoid the upstairs dining room if possible - the decor isn't anything special, and the lack of windows makes for a rather dim, unpleasant atmosphere. Also, your server will be drenched in sweat from running up and down the stairs. Speaking of our server, he was quite busy, constantly heading past our table with a tray of food or a stack of checks for other tables, always assuring us he would be with us soon... though soon ended up being over 20 minutes. When he finally got to us, he settled down to take our orders.. still failing to realize that we had yet to be given menus. When he realized that mistake, he apologized for it and for how long we had been waiting.... No, wait, actually he didn't. Instead, he repeatedly informed us it was the fault of the hostess for not having supplied us with menus. He finally brought us some, and returned to take our order... Or, well, to try to. One member of our party has Celiacs, and attempted to order a mini-pizza with gluten free crust, only to be told they were out (This is her second time at the depot since being diagnosed with Celiacs, they were out last time as well). She attempted to order a strawberry salad instead... only to be informed they were out of strawberries as well. Luckily, they evidently had the food necessary to serve the rest of us, and her third choice was also in stock. The first part of our order arrived fairly quickly... the appetizer of onion rings we had ordered was generously portioned and excellent (bright spot!). The beef soup one member of our party had ordered, on the other hand, was reported to not taste bad... but it would have been better had the beef actually been broken into smaller pieces prior to being put in the soup, rather then being a single 'disc' of meat floating at the bottom. After that mixed experience, we waited... and waited... and after nearly another half our, our server returned to inform us it would be another five minutes. Ten minutes later, he returned again with our food, and apoligized for the wait. No, wait, yet again, we were given excuses. We were told they were running behind because the downstairs and the patio were packed (despite two members of our party having gone down to visit the restrooms less then five minutes ago and, upon returning, remarked on how empty it was downstairs). At least, all in all, the food wasn't too bad - the burgers and sandwiches were reported to be decent, as was the veggie pizza. The reuben pizza was also not bad, with the caveat that it was really more of a canadian bacon pizza with white sauce, having nearly no sauerkraut on it and tasting virtually nothing like a reuben. When we were finished, our server brought us the checks (we had informed him of the start that we were made up of two smaller parties, and made clear who was in which), only to discover that the appetizer was not on the heck of the person who had ordered it. He quickly took the checks to correct the mistake... and eventually returned with the corrected checks, ten minutes later. Once again, there was no apology - this time, it was the computer system's fault. Now, I've spent half a decade working in the restaurant industry. I understand that sometimes things get behind, people call in sick, stuff happens. But after going about an hour between the time we entered and the time we got our food, after having the only non-salad option for one of our party being out of stock... I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to expect some sort of apology and some sort of consideration on our final bill... in short, I expect the restaurant to in some way show that the experience we had is NOT one they consider normal or acceptable. Absent that, I can only conclude that, evidently, they do consider the level of service we received to be good enough - which is good enough for me to know I won't be returning anytime soon. read more

We recently had the Depot cater a wedding at the Maritime Museum Gardens. To make a long story short, we wouldn't hire them again. Poor service, confusing billing, they ran out of the main entree mid meal, didn't have the appropriate glassware, and didn't listen to some small requests made well in advance like not to overdress the salad, (which they also ran out of) and to have a specific brand of scotch at the reception for an honored guest. We attended two tastings for what should have been a simple pasta bar menu- the second visit was to retest their pesto, since what we first tested was very much like cream of basil soup. They gave us three options on our second testing- two of which were so salty that the Manager left without a word and headed back to the kitchen. We were given plenty of excuses- they did two events in one night, we eat more than a typical group (really)?? They ran out of shrimp, marinara and salad- we had a group of 150 - I can't imagine it wasn't a typical wedding group. They also served the wrong beer initially- at $300 a keg, we asked for Blue Moon and got Michelob light- this was corrected an hour into the reception when I was able to find the Manger- but shouldn't have happened at all. In addition our open bar bill was 'guestimated' the bartenders did no recording or tally of orders- at the end of the night we were just given a number. When asked if we could review the numbers (which didn't add up) and come to the restaurant the next day to settle up (it was dark and 10:30pm) the manager said no, we had to settle up that night as the next day was her day off and she was going shopping. When I asked her to recalculate the bill, she found she was off by hundreds of dollars and had to go back and ring up a new bill. I would have expected better service from a small town locally owned business. read more

Waitresses got in a fight over which one would serve us and then pitted us, the customer, in the middle. Food was bad, cold and stale, flys were everywhere and everything looked dirty - this place needs a rescue! The building is cool! read more

Lousy Pizza !! Do Not Buy ! Sausage (if it is sausage) pre-cooked little balls from a food service were greasy and tasteless , and cold . Crust another cheap food service product , no taste . Went here for prime rib twice, the first experience was pleasant the waitress was friendly the food was hott and fresh and we always had refills. The second experience we sat upstairs and it was hot and stuffy, the waitress was rude and acted like we were a burden when we wanted more prime rib!!! Needless to say she walked up and down the stairs quite a few times because aside from the service the prime rib there is delicious. read more

We went to the Depot Express on a Tuesday afternoon and were drawn by the popovers described in their menu. My wife ordered a bowl of the beef stroganoff soup and popovers. The popovers were rubbery and tasteless and her soup was so salty it could have been made by the Morton (salt) Company. I had a grilled chicken sandwich was ok at best. The service was ok, but the server rushed us at the end our meal. Depot Express' patio and historic building are inviting and charming, but the food is underwhelming. We will not visit again when in Alexandria. read more

We tried the Depot as a group of 10 for our adults night out on vacation. We thought the old train station vibe would be neat and after a quick view of the menu we gave it a try. But it was a disappointment from the start. There was no resemblance inside of an old train station. We were seated in the dingy bar area, which was nearly full. It was 20 minutes before we saw a server, and she told us she was overwhelmed and "they just gave me a table of 10 before you sat down" so it was going to be awhile before she would be with us. After ordering, it took another 45 minutes before we received our drinks from the bar. The food was so-so, just typical bar food. What we could not shake was the service. It was chaotic, the few servers darting back and forth, time spent with us was rushed, and we had long periods of waiting. We witnessed multiple scuffles amongst servers- our server even lashed out at others while taking our order. It was a mess. I would not recommend, and we will not return. read more

Fabulous location. The waitress suggested we sit outside and it was fantastic. I wasn't going to get a drink but I had to with that view - I could sit there all day. It's also pretty cool to see Big Ole in the background. We got there at 2:50 and were able to order the strip steak lunch special for $8. It must have been 10oz or so. It came with some fried potatoes and a veggie but I told the waitress I was going low carb and although she said there were no substitutions, she said I could get two servings of the vegetables! I wish I'd taken a pic because my plate was full. Actually, I took the steak home with me since I was full after eating all those green and yellow beans and baby carrots. My husbands Summer Shandy was 2.75. Apparently it was happy hour. My only complaint is our waitress left after taking our order and another one replaced her. She should have told us she was leaving. What a disappointment! We sat inside due to the breeze but were bothered by flies throughout dinner. Wait staff inattentive - the excuse was that they were very busy with the patio crowd! Server brought bottle of chardonnay to the table which was room temp. Whiskey steak tasty, but accompanying vegetables all cold. Hamburger ordered "medium" but came "very well done" on a cold dry bun. This is not what we expected in the middle of prime July vacation time! We will NOT be returning. read more

Our family of 8 went to the Depot Express for dinner. The experience was trouble. To begin with the cold air was blowing on us and we all either had our coats on or were wearing sweaters. When I mentioned it to the server she laughed. Our food took quite a long time to come after we placed our order. Then when the food arrived two of the meals were not edible. The chicken in the Chicken Parmesan was RAW, yes raw and frozen. When it was brought up to the server's attention she stated that she needed to take it back to the kitchen. This was not really a problem because we were not going to eat it. But that was the first comment from her mouth, not I am so sorry let me take that for you. The pizza was covered with so much cheese that the crust was soggy and not edible. I really believe that the chef or the manager should have come to our table and apologize or have at least checked in. If you feel the need to eat here I would encourage you to bring a flashlight, a portable heater and most of all a meat thermometer read more
