Walk into Dera; shamelessly poke your face above the counter and make yourself visible, and then emphatically point at the spicy/ oily/ delicious dishes sitting out in batches for the one(s) you would like. 2. Get a side of very hot, very soft naan; get the excellent $1 samosas. 3. Probably not a bad idea to have a little Styrofoam bowl of yogurt/raita to accompany your meal. 4. Aah good old Dera, have visited thsi place everytime i come to the Small apple. The food has always tasted the same but i always go for the good old grill items or there goat biryani, hits the spot right. Dinning inside if you are here onthe weekend is quite chaotic but the servers do a good job and get the food out right, due this being a busy spot i prefer packign it up and going home to get your hands dirty. A cup of tea is perfect and cooked right as the art of tea needs to be smoked right. Will be back again soon, the desi folks know what they are getting into here :) read more

Food is great! I've had their garlic nan, butter chicken, and kebabs and they were all very delicious. They have a wide range of indian and pakistani sweets but I've never tried. Their service and pricing are really strange. Rice costs $6, which is almost as much as the butter chicken, $8. Doesn't really make sense! It's hard to order if you aren't familiar with the food they offer because all the wait staff crowd around the glass showcases so you literally have to wedge your way in between them....BUT not before they each ask you what you want/if you're being helped once every 3 minutes even if you're the only one there... When we called we were told that they gave the food to an Uber driver and we have to call Seamless and then this woman told me I had to google the number and "it's the driver's problem, not ours" and then this woman HUNG UP on me with no apology after I've been waiting for TWO HOURS!! This review is only for the Mitai (sweets) and the wonderful lady who helped us. We came here for sweets for my sisters wedding. This is the only legitimate Pakistani sweet shop left in nyc. I went to the other places in Jackson heights and they are disgusting. All the other places just are sugar. This is actual authentic fresh Pakistani sweets. They are 8 dollars a pound which is a good price and boy do they have a good variety. The lady who helped us was so thorough and understanding and patient and nice. Even though it was crowded and getting busy she worked on our order and provided us with extra boxes to give out sweets in. read more

Very good food. We ordered chicken seekh kabab, tandoori naan, chicken tikka, and karahi chicken. Everything was fresh, hot and tasted very good. Only cons were not a good restroom and all the food was bought together (appetizers should have come first) but all in all a good place to eat at decent prices. read more

The food is good and the staff was great. If you go there by any chance, try chicken makhni or chicken karahi with naan, you would love it. The only thing that doesn't get any star is the ambiance, it seems that other customers looking over your shoulders to finish your food so they can take your table. I decided to go to Dera after seeing multiple social media postings from friends who have visited this restaurant. I walked into the restaurant and proceeded to the area where the food is kept and stood there for 15 minutes before anyone helped me out, no one acknowledged me. I kept moving to mirror the guy behind the counter but he continually ignored me until a waitress from the floor approached me to take my order. It was pretty busy but this was ridiculous. If there is no customer in front of you on the line, you should be acknowledged right away. This was not what pissed me off. What pissed me off was when after I placed my order, I noticed the worker place the food into the to-go container and then proceed to place it into a microwave for reheating. What kind of a restaurant uses a microwave? Microwaves DO NOT belong in real restaurants as it ruins the quality and texture of the food. My husband and I had dinner here tonight. The prices are ok they are not low but not too high either. We ordered nihari biryani and papri chaat. The papri chaat was amaaaazing i loved it the only thing that threw me off was the price. 7 dollars for a papri chaat is just too much..The nihari was ok it would have been better if it wassteaming hot, it was a little more on the cold side. Ok let's get real. If you are going to jackson heights for ambiance you must also be going to the bathroom looking for your refrigerator. Jackson heights is not known for its service or its decor. If you do come here be prepared for the most authentic Pakistani food you will ever have short of coming to my parents house. I wouldn't waste time getting any of the n00b dishes (chicken makhani etc). Focus on the more time intensive dishes that can't be made out of a box. Goat pulao, kurahi gosht, Bihari kebabs. The sweets here are probably the best in the city and possibly the country. Yes food is oily but seriously when have you ever had Indian food that isn't? Be prepared to deal with clueless staff. They aren't rude just clueless. Otherwise a really fun place to take some friends for a very laid back time and good food. Rowdy place that is seat yourself so feel free to just grab a table. Please please stay away from this place! The food is overcooked, overcooked. Second, I ordered two sides with rice and this is what they gave me for $9.00 - overloaded with rice on a very small container, topped off with a tiny scoop few pieces of chicken rendang and another tiny tiny scoop at most 4 pieces of chicken curry. Because the container was so tiny it could not possibly fit that much rice and therefore the little amount of chicken. When I have a hold of the food, it was COLD and most dissapointing chicken more than overcooked, I felt like I was chewing on rocks. I tasted two pieces of chicken and had a little bit of the hard cold rice, and was forced to throw out the remainder. The reason I come here is for the quality of the food, but it seems as if they've also carried waitstaff traditions over from Pakistan. Nobody seats you--you just plop down wherever you'd like; moreover, you more often than not, need to bring the waitress over to you rather than wait for her to come. Now this is fine for people who understand the south asian dining culture, but a non south asian family may have a hard time keeping up. My best advice to you is, think of this place as a hybrid waitstaff/self serve type of restaurant. You can be more open and direct with the staff. Just don't ask them to explain the food to you. You either know it or should do your research before you come. But, it's worth it. The food is delicious. read more

If you want some of the best old school north indian/pakistani food in the tri state area go to dera. Fast service, Delicious food and Private parking. Try the Mutton/Chicken kadai with butter naan. Finish off with falooda. The other dishes are great too but this combo is so classic that it never gets old for me. The waitresses just stand around talking to one another. They did not come to get my order until I literally yelled to get my attention. The food took forever to come. The waitress had no idea which dishes were spicy and which were not. I will never come back. After I ate what I ordered, I wanted to order more naan and some sodas. However, there were no waitresses in sight. There was a lady and her son sitting at the table next to mine. It took her a while to even get the menu. After she got the menu, she also had trouble getting the attention of the waitresses. She waited half an hour and she didn't get her food even though she asked several waitresses when the food would come. Well, they all said that the food was coming. I had lunch during a non-busy, lazy weekday with my parents and sister. Ambiance: was sorely lacking. Tacky wood veneer plastic tables, oversized million inch flat-screen TV broadcasting some Indian variety show or music video, speakers blasting crappy Bollywood music...old-school Jackson Heights. It appeals to the majority demographic: middle-aged Desi families out for a cheap dinner or taxi drivers on their coffee break. Service: was pretty much terrible. We were served a stack of paper plates, napkins and silverware to distribute. Seriously, you expect your patrons to set their own tables? I guess business was slow for a reason... we were given cheap picnic cups and a pitcher of cool (but not ice-cold) water. Not to beat a point to death, but when it's 90-plus degrees out in the dead heat of summer noon, you'd like some evidence of effort, no? Maybe some transpiration action going? Lastly, we were not given separate serving spoons. If we weren't family, having to share would be highly inappropriate and unhygienic, much less blameworthy. Food: was surprisingly good (redeems the second star, honestly). We got some tandoori roti (very gluten-y, also slightly charred) and chicken makhni (butter sauce chicken) and kaali daal (lentils). All were excellent, considering it was split by four people decently. My only complaint here is the restaurant does not offer plain white rice, instead you are forced to buy your choice of seasoned palao/biryani or rice with peas for $5.00. For a plate of rice with peas. Gimme a break. All in all, you're better off going to Kabab King (if you don't mind the lack of hygiene, haphazard ordering area and crowds) or Sammy's Halal (famous gyro stand), winner of the coveted Vendy Award. I have eaten there before.. The food is excellent when they have time for you. A friend and I went there last night. The waitress seated us. They really weren't that busy.
