Wanting a quick snack before heading onto the neighboring R train, we stopped in for some steamy hot momo and respite from the cold. The gentleman at the counter was doing everything himself, from serving customers to preparing all the dishes. We ordered the pani puri and a tray of steamed chicken momo (pictured). I am not a big fan of pani puri, but my partner said it was good. I did love the chicken momo and the sauce for dipping was spectacular. We paid around $15 in total for everything, including two waters, so its a steal if you are in the area. In my travels from afar I've walked by K2 many times without understanding the delights that awaited within. My review is based on two items sampled on separate occasions: pani puri and dahi puri are served as small plates of eight or nine small hors d'oeuvres-like snacks made up of complex layers of flavors. I'm no expert on this cuisine but understand its roots are street food that was so good it's often served in fine restaurants. To be sure, K2 is no fine dining establishment, and to come here expecting it is anything approaching that would be a mistake. It's a neighborhood dive, the front of the restaurant wide open, weather permitting, with questionable cleanliness and an interior that suggests no one is particularly concerned about the ambiance. I'm of the opinion not every food establishment needs to cater to those needs, so as long as the food is great, I'm in. Both dishes consist of a circular wheat-based, light, airy shell with the top removed, then filled with different ingredients. For both dishes the appeal is the complexity. Dahi puri is at once sweet, savory, salty, bitter and plenty of heat--a real sensory bomb. The combination (eat these in one bite!) rewards the palette nicely. For pani puri it's onion, cilantro, plenty of heat, garbanzos and possibly potato if memory serves. Again, a complex single bite that simply delights. Pair these with the Himalayan butter tea with it's salty & sweet taste and you once again have a complex experience. But to be sure, that tea is an acquired taste and many palettes will not agree with my assessment as to its pleasing taste. What feels like a former Chinese takeout spot storefront is actually K2 Delight Cafe, one of the only chaat dedicated spots that I've encountered that wasn't a full fledged restaurant. It is a stone's throw away from the subway (i.e. right out front) and one of Jackson Heights' least recognizable businesses due to lack of signage and decoration. In other words, this is my kind of place. As previously noted, the signage is nearly non-existent and the address (via the Yelp listing) was really the only reason I found it. The decor is also minimal and the inside is a mishmosh of various businesses that the owner keeps the place busy looking, even when it's not. The menu is pretty simple. Chaat, and lots of it. It's veggie friendly, nutritious and very interesting when sampled in different capacities. Whatever I end up ordering (usually pani puri), I'll follow that up with a nice chai tea beverage and a nice place to sit. At about $7 a plate, it's an excellent and filling option for lunch or whenever you decide to eat. The ladies behind the counter are awesome and they're open till about 10pm each night. I'm hoping they get a bit more fanfare / reviews, they certainly deserve some recognition from the community. read more

Had samosa chat, medium spicy. The samosas, be honest, are kind of bland, but the sauce is really tasty. The chutney and yogurt are perfectly balanced, neither too salty nor too sweet. They have no menu, and their place is pretty tiny and old. It is quite clean though. read more

I'm sure you've noticed from my reviews by now that I like a good chat, and boy, oh boy, does this place deliver! So far I've sampled the samosa and bhel puri chats with medium spiciness -- which is plenty spicy for me, thank you very much. Not only were they tasty, they were gigantic! They also serve momos and other Nepalese snacks, but I haven't gone for those yet. The one weird thing about the place is that there's no menu. Everything is on display, though, so if you know your Indian snacks you can just order them up. If you don't, the staff is super-friendly, so I'm sure you can ask them for advice. The chats are around $6, which seems like a lot for a snack until you factor in the meal-sized gigantic-ness. It's a great addition to the 'hood, and I can't wait to pop back in. read more

This Jackson Heights eatery is the last 20 years of the neighborhood in miniature, I don't just say that because the place eats just over a dozen in the back of a phone card kiosk. It's run by a Tibetan augmenting the Nepali cuisine of his former home with a buffet serving the street food of Central India. This is food that looks back on the days when this area was exclusively an Indian street. Now many of the Indians are in their second and third generations, and have moved to fancier, more tony residences in Queens or out on Long Island. The Indian places here are becoming drive destinations, while the Himalayan migrants of Nepal and Tibet are taking over. For almost all Tibetans exiles of a certain era, Kathmandu was a necessary and virtually required stop when fleeing the People's Republic. The goal was usually the court-in-exile in Dharamsala, but it could take months or years to assemble the cash and contacts necessary for the journey. So migrants settled in and learned how to make the local curries and chutneys. Eventually, many made their way to India, where they learned new traditions. Some headed further afield to the United States and Queens. Thankfully all of that migration means that even the chaat novice is in for an easy time here. The proprietor is more than happy to explain the various ingredients (something I did together to my mother, who was with me for our visit). I assembled a pretty traditional combination of chick peas, yogurt, onions, a spicy masala and crisp topping, which I later ate for a cold, spicy dinner later in the evening. My mother took a couple of samosas and a pakora to share with my father on the drive back upstate. There are more Nepali and even a couple Tibetan specialities served at the steam table part of this tiny eatery, but considering it's name, I'd like to think that this is best fare the chef can serve up after all of his travels. read more

From all the fancy, big name restaurants around the Jackson Heights area, this joint surprised my taste buds the most. The chats are great and the Tibetan Mo-Mo they randomly sell taste delicious as well. I need to hit up this place again. read more

I found the chaat here to be pretty subpar- my bhel puri was stale, though it came in a large portion for $6. Good amount of spice. The pani puri was expensive ($4 for 4) and totally lacking in filling- only a tiny bit of potatoes in each puri, and I could barely taste mint in the pani. read more

Good Indian chaat/chai in a somewhat ramshackle place next to the Roosevelt-74th St subway. My wife and I ordered my favorite dish dahi puri, which are fried hollow chips (or beggars purses), stuffed with cooked chickpeas and potatoes, smothered in yogurt, tamarind, and cilantro chutneys, topped off with fried bits and fresh coriander. The flavors didn't disappoint, although I would have liked it a bit more spicy and with more chaat masala. Despite the Indian-evoking name, the guys who run this place seem to be Nepalese/Himalayan, as further evidenced by their unexpected offering of momos and other regional snacks. While I was satisfied with my Indian chaat, I may have been more wowed by the Nepalese offerings. I give this place 3 stars for being good but not outstanding. the food is truly great, everyone shoud try the momos, they are wonderful, i love them. they are filled with hot soupy fillings and the hot sauce is also great. the owners are Pakistani and i believe are also Himalayan. the staff is super friendly. the pani puri is served indian style, but if you ask they also make pakistani style. i prefer the pakistani style because it tastes alot better. this place is much better than other place in the neighborhood. read more
