Unexpected Entrance, Tasty Food, and Room for Improvement The most unexpected way to enter a restaurant! My friend led me through a colorful door and up a suspicious-looking stairway, only for us to step into a surprisingly spacious dining area. Since we arrived outside their peak hours (6 PM - 10 PM), the place was completely empty. We ordered the mango yogurt drink, meat platter, garlic naan, butter chicken, and lamb chops. Overall, everything was fresh and flavorful. The lamb chops were a bit too salty, and the butter chicken had a stronger tomato taste than I prefer, but it was still enjoyable. This place is a solid 3.5 to 4 stars, but I'm rounding down to 3 stars mainly because the butter chicken didn't match my taste preferences. That said, I'll definitely return to try more dishes! Friendliness: (4/5) Food: (3.8/5) Price: (2.5/5) Looking forward to my next visit!

I was craving Bangladeshi food, so my partner and I decided to try Chef's Mahal in Jackson Heights, as it had promising Google reviews. We arrived around 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday. Finding the restaurant wasn't entirely straightforward--the sign outside pointed to "Chef's Mahal," but the entrance required walking up a somewhat ambiguous staircase that felt more like heading into an apartment than a dining space. We were warmly greeted once inside, and the dining room was completely empty. We ordered Goat Vindaloo, Goat Curry, and Garlic Naan. Each entree came with a generous serving of rice, and the naan was impressively large. The Goat Vindaloo was strikingly red, and its fiery spice balanced out the bold appearance. The Goat Curry didn't quite match the familiar taste of my mom's cooking, but it held its own with a decent, comforting flavor. What I appreciated the most was the chef's generosity with the meat--something rare in many Indian restaurants where meat portions can feel like an afterthought. Overall, Chef's Mahal was worth a visit for a taste of home, even though our dishes didn't taste entirely like Mom's.

A very beautiful restaurant located in Jackson Heights, Queens. It's on the 2nd floor which is wondeful because it makes for nice views of the street below. We went here Friday 05/30/2025 at 5:45PM and the restaurant was nice & empty. They have a staircase that'll take you upstairs or the elevator which opens up straight inside the restaurant. Take it up to the 2nd floor & bam the door opens & you step right inside the restaurant. It's a rather large dining space. The couches are a nice shade of brown & they have bouquets & flowers throughout the establishment. Our seats next to the tall glass were very comfortable. Our waiter was friendly & attentive. The food was all amazing! I loved my masala chai. It had great masala flavor & wasn't overly sweet. Samosas were delicious, butter chicken was so melt in your mouth perfect with the perfect orange buttery color to it. The Bombay aloo was a little cold but still enjoyable. Naan were soft & hot. Everything was made fresh. I enjoyed the vegetable masala dish. It wasn't too spicy which is what I prefer. The paneer tikka squares were a delight. I can't wait to come back here. This just might be my new go-to spot for Bengladeshi food.

Ate here today after work as a substitute paraprofessional at P.S. 234 Q. I had brought and ate the chicken tikka masala, couple side orders of basmati rice and garlic naan with a drink of mango lassi. The service there was also attentive and pleasant that I was the only customer since it's Ramadan and it's unexpectedly quiet as well. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time.

Really really tasty food, friendly staff and spacious space. We ordered a mixture of dishes and the taste was spot on on all of them. Would definitely recommend this place and will be back as well.

I was really hoping for the food to be amazing here but it fell super short. Although service was terrible, once we received the food which looked great, I was excited to try it but was disappointed. The goat and beef dishes only contained bones and fat and very little meat. It's like they bought the cheapest parts of meat possible for each dish although the prices were still high. Not only was the food not worth the money whatsoever, service was not good. Two sets of cutlery we had were visibly dirty and when we asked for replacements, we never got them so we shared cutlery. I also asked for water for the table three times before I got it although there were only two tables at the time including ours. This place is not worth coming to. They are dirty, provide poor quality food, and have terrible service. When in Jackson Heights there are so many other better options available.

Service and management were perfect and so nice. Food was impeccable! Very big and clean venue, will come again!

    Great view from Chefs Mahal

First time here, had lunch with a friend, it was delicious ! Ordered all vegetarian dishes. Service was very good ) Regarding ambiance, the natural light from the windows is great, and the chairs are comfortable. I would suggest to add decorations/art to the walls, and maybe turn on some soft music as well.

When you're the only person who looks like you in the place and you're surrounded by brown people speaking other languages, you've likely found an authentic place with great food. Ittadi was definitely that place. They have a huge buffet of food, TONS of options, but you can also tell the food is fresh. And the place was so busy that you know the food didn't sit long and was refreshed often. We tried the coconut samosa, which was large in size. It was the perfect combo of savory and sweet. We also had the egg chop, which is a hard boiled egg covered in spicy mashed potatoes and fried in a crispy breadcrumb coating. It was super spicy (in a good way) and delish. It came with a side of onions and greenery. We also had the haleem, which is a comfort dish, made of lentils. It was so warm and filling. Absolutely delicious. The employees/owners were so kind. They were really invested in us liking our food. When we didn't eat everything, they were concerned, but we told them we were on a food crawl and had to save space, otherwise we would have devoured everything. Again, this was my favorite place of the whole crawl, and I would make the trek back over to Queens just for this food.

The fuchka was the main event; I liked the original a bit more than the yogurt variety (doi fuchka); the latter was sweet and a little more creamy, while the original had a nice spice and crisp that stood out. I discovered that a Bangladesh street food called fushka is very popular, so decided to try for my first time. Tong is highly rated and their menu is simple. I ordered the Doi Fuchka ($7), which comes as crispy, hollow puri shells stuffed with a savory mashed potato and chickpea mixture. The difference in the doi is that it is topped with a yogurt to balance the spice for a creamier texture. I liked this a lot, especially with the tamarind sauce too (though this got a bit messy). This is nothing like I've ever tasted with so many different textures going on. It hits you with spicy, sweet, savory, crunchy, creamy, chewy and everything all at once. It comes with 8 pieces, which is perfect to share with 2-3 people. Definitely something to check out!

Don't get me started on fish types and their various preparation. I knew it's not a proper restaurant so my expectation was not like that. We went there with 3 other Bengali friends. You have to go to counter to see all the food items and then you can choose whatever you want. We ordered so many things, alu-chokha-baigan bharta- alu bhaja- mutton curry- ilish mach-prawn curry- some fish with gobhi- fish fry Out table was not sufficient for keeping all the dishes. My fellow Bengali friends were really happy to see this and we liked the food. Yup, we liked it. As it was more like home food and not fancy Bengali restaurant type. Everything was bringing memories from Kolkata homes. And it is not even expensive. Every item was from $4-$12. We four were there and it was $72 only and we had 6-7 dishes. Only bad thing is that from Jersey City to Queens, we had to change 2 paths, so one person it is $11 for both ways. So we spent $44 to come here and have this food. Was it worth it? I would say NO. but yes, once in while you can come.

The latter holds true for Abdullah, which has been among the sleepier businesses on the block for a good number of years. It's not exactly a destination spot, but serves the neighborhood well as a locals only type establishment. Like many of the shops along 37th, the space is super tight with an old school exterior look. This is more of a takeout joint than anything, but I imagine coming in for some tea and a snack from the display is doable on a solo adventure. I haven't used the bathrooms yet and given the relatively grimy interior, I'm not sure I would want to. I initially came for the sweets and ended up getting their infamous fuchka and wasn't disappointed. They also serve a halfway decent bortha, which I prefer with potato over the shrimp and tomato. I had tried their beef teheri and the boneless version of their beef kalovuna and give it a thumbs up. The sweets (especially their burfi) were disappointing for how dry they were (both the coconut and gazar were like chalk). Star wise, I'd have to give them a 4 for the food I've tried, but the overall 3 is for the lackluster service. Despite having come here a number of times, it's never been the warmest of encounters. The prices are pretty decent and the flow of the crowd is steady throughout the week. While they take CC, cash is always king.

Pros: seated quickly, ambiance was lovely, appetizers came out quickly, the Lasuni Gobi was delicious. CONS: My husband and I waited 40+ minutes for our main dishes (dal + rice and the Paneer Tikka dish) to arrive....... And we watched the people who were seated AFTER us receive their MEAT dishes before we got our ours and we most definitely ordered first. We asked our server MORE THAN ONCE what was taking so long and we got the same answer each time "I've told the kitchen to hurry, it'll be out soon" To make matters worse, the person who brought us our dishes (maybe the chef? Maybe the manager?) brought them without the naan that we ordered. When I asked, "where's our naan?" He had the audacity to rudely say "it'll be out in a few minutes", as if we hadn't already been waiting 40+ minutes for vegetarian food that I could've whipped up myself in 20 minutes. His attitude towards us was so unacceptable considering the circumstances. We have absolutely no idea what happened or why it took so long for our simple dishes to arrive. It's especially perplexing considering that the people who came in AFTER us got their meat dishes first. The server apologized and decided to bring us some kulfi (ice cream) to try to make up for it, but we try to avoid eating sugar so that was useless. I felt bad for the server because it wasn't his fault that our food took a ridiculous amount of time to make it to our table, and it's not cool that a manager never stepped in to try to reconcile. As someone who waited tables for 8+ years, I was shocked at the lack of support this server received from his management team. The dal and paneer tikka dishes were average tasting at best (and overpriced), making another trip here completely unfathomable, most especially considering how we were treated. Note to management: do better. Support your staff and step in to reconcile with unhappy guests if this happens again.
