It's been a very long time I tried their food . I was a regular there when I was living in queens. Now I live too far to come here often. On our victory day this month I decided to try some Bangladeshi food from an authentic Bangladeshi restaurant. The place looks ok, no fancy decorations. Service was good, food was good. I've had Ghoroa a long time ago, like aImost 15 years ago! I remember enjoying their food, and especially their beef bihari Kabab, at that time. I'm back in NYC and was craving bihari kabab so ordered that from here. Once it arrived, it didn't look too appetizing. The color was off, it had no "burn marks" on it but the taste was ok, like a 6/10. Nothing to write home about. A few days later, a relative ordered the same thing from Boishakhi Restaurant and it completely blew away Ghoroa's version. It was better in every way - looks, texture and most importantly, taste. This is another authentic Bangladeshi spot in the belly of Jamaica, home to many of my Bengali pps. The name itself means 'Home' referring to it's food being homemade. The name delivers. Another great restaurant serving to the local community and giving the other great Bengali restaurants in the area some worthy competition. The venue itself is a nice sit down, clean and spacious. The biryanis, samosas, and curries are all delicious. They've opened a second location in Brooklyn, stay tuned for my review on that. read more

After wandering around for a while for lunch, I decided on Ghoroa (Only had an hour, wanted vegetarian food but not salad; Jamaica don't have much non-meat options). The buffet trays were full, so I guess it didn't hit busy-time yet (then again, there's Tikka Garden, Sagar, and Dhaka Sweets down the block). The lady working there was very helpful and I opted for vegetable rice and okra. $6 wasn't bad. I've had Sagar before too, menu is pretty similar. Food is definitely one of the best around its neighborhood (of Hillside/Jamaica). Particularly the Tahari, Kacchi Biryani and Chicken Roast. I'm a frequent customer at this restaurant. 90% of the time I get the vegetable somosa and some kebab. But last night I found a pebble the size of a marble in my vegetable somosa. Horrified. I went back to the restaurant to tell them. When I asked if the front staff told the manager she replied "we are all managers". Can't say if I will be returning there ever. read more

This place was the bomb before something changed. I have been coming here since I was a kid. Surprised it even exists on Yelp but hey! I would have added it otherwise. So here's the review: 5/5 Stars for the venue. There are many places like this restaurant that serve Bangladeshi (NOT INDIAN) food. This place keeps it clean and has plenty of space. 4/5 stars for their food. If the food is fresh, it is good. The paratha (bread?) is really delicious here. The best, if you ask me. SInce the entire area is now crowded with other similar restaurants, this place has maintained some sort of quality. I once had the Chicken Tikka Masala about a year and a half ago and it was super delicious. However, they changed it completely and it is terrible. You lose a star for that little inconsistency. Since I come here when my mom does not feel like cooking, my parents thoroughly enjoy their food. It is made fresh and well. Enjoy. P.S. Their curries are awesome. Very affordable. Work brought my coworker and me to this neighborhood and we were hungry. Not only were we on unfamiliar turf, but we were at the mercy of a dead cell battery, meaning no Yelp Mobile to save the day. I asked a random dude on a street corner what was good to eat. He looked us up and down, decided we looked like we needed some kabobs, and pointed us in the direction of Ghoroa. Well this vagrant knew his kabobs. My coworker and I walked in and noticed a lengthy menu with too many damn choices. I pointed to the juiciest looking kabob on the menu and asked the server how many came in an order. "One." "ONE?! I haven't eaten since... 3pm. It is now 730. My stomach is starting to consume itself. I'll take two orders of the Behari kabob." Out came two skewers in all their glory. And man, they were luscious. The bread and rice were, well, bread and rice. You can't really screw those up. There isn't much to this place in terms of elegance or ambiance, but who cares, it's cheap. It's legit curries and kabobs, and it's a real, brick-and-mortar restaurant. You no longer have to rely on some schlub serving kabobs out of a street cart with a side of salmonella. read more

I have stated that finding a vegetarian place to eat on Jamaica can be a challenge. The line of Bengali restaurants along Hillside Ave makes it a little easier. While none of these restaurants are exclusively vegetarian, they have a good variety of options. When last I was in Ghoroa, I got mixed vegetables, a shredded potato vegetable mix and tons of rice (they give a lot of rice) all for $6. Good deal. I have had the samosas and dal in the past. This last time they did not have a non-meat dal (really?). For a filling, good tasting take out (or eat in) enjoy your white rice and the rest of your choosing. read more

It was disgusting. Honestly I hate to waste food but I only ate the salad. I couldn't stomach the rest of it. It was so oily and the flavors were so off I couldn't even eat it. It was definitely AWFUL. It was also cold which made it even worse. The staff is nice and friendly but that cannot make up for the horrible food. Ghoroa is a Bangladeshi restaurant, placed at the intersection of Church and McDonald in Kensington. It's an interesting neighborhood, one of the few where man would gather at night in the street and talk. If you pass by the local stores, you'll find giant jackfruits, the biggest fruit in the world, and various colorful varieties of squash and beans. When you enter Ghoroa, practically everyone there will be Bangladeshi. The steam table has a variety of meats and vegetables. You can pick a few dishes, or even better, navigate the dishes by the printed take-out menu. No need to become stressed, as they will provide you with table service once you've picked what you wanted. They also provide cool water in jugs and some salad free of charge. The food was good, inexpensive and interesting. The kababs were wonderfully spiced, but for my taste a bit too charred. You can stuff yourself at dinner for $10, so the value is very good. While being one of the more approachable Bangladeshi restaurants in the area, the downside is that the flat surfaces in the restaurant provide an ideal echo chamber, and with the popularity of the place and its glass & metal decor, this is really not a place for a romantic date. read more

This restaurant got my uncle sick because they decided to serve him a 3day old curry and when confronted they said "everyone else ate it but how come only he got sick" the mangers Rezaul and Bur hauq are bullshit people didn't even apologize for the incident. This area has some interesting and often scruffy ethnic food places, but I noticed this one looked clean and bright. It does seem to be a popular hangout for Bangladeshi men, but the menus/signs are in English, plus there's a nice buffet of food where they are happy to explain the dishes. I was a little confused as to how best order since they didn't have combo meals listed... so I simply asked for some beef curry with rice. They guy piled a mountain of rice on a plate and asked if it was enough. I told him to return most of it. Then he ladled on a good portion of curry and asked if I wanted any vegetables. I pointed at a mixed medley. He then suggested a spinach side as well, which was fine (though I was thinking to myself... how much is this gonna cost? It was a heaping plate of food). With a coke - $7. In fact he thought I only had $6 and said that was fine - but I was merely fishing out more bills from my pocket. Food-wise, if you've not had it, Bangladeshi grub is very similar to Indian (though they do like beef as well), and Ghoroa had about 20 dishes from which to choose on the buffet, plus others (kebabs, etc) one can order a la cart. The food is nicely presented, not scary vats of mystery grub, and since they are catering mostly to expats, the pull no punches in terms of heat and spices. In fact my 2 different veggie side dishes packed more punch than the curry. It didn't make me cry but I did appreciate the pitchers of ice water at each table. I'll definitely be back when in need of a home cooked, exotic yet wallet-friendly meal. read more

Racist restaurant if you are not Bengali. They treat you differently. The staff, especially HAMIDA, is what she told me her name was, is very rude and did not complete my order to my satisfaction. This restaurant does not GIVE EQUAL TREATMENT. They gave me the driest burnt piece of kabab and when I asked for new one they started arguing with me and escalating the situation. Then when I wanted to pay she tried to tell me my Venmo card was fake. Total discrimination. I will file a complaint with the city and name the owner and this staff in the application. The quality of food here is satisfactory, that is not my qualm. Nor is the fact that I stick out like a sore thumb amongst the near-exclusively Bangladeshi men who always seem to be there (it is Kensington after all). The service is lacking, the fact that I'm hassled about using my debit card when it clearly states they take cards is unacceptable, and they don't seem to know how to package their food to go: twice I've ordered chicken tikka masala (which they make exceptionally well) and twice the plastic container leaked on the way home, probably because the container isn't heat-safe. If you don't know what you're ordering when you come here, you'll probably be in over your head as most of the employees are not proficient in English. Don't bother calling in: the one time I called in and asked if I could place an order for pick up, they said yes and then hung up on me. For what is available in this neighborhood, Ghoroa has the best food of its kind. That's it though. With numerous choices for Bangladeshi restaurants in the neighborhood, unfortunately I was disappointed with Ghora after giving them many chances. The good- A decent variety of selection of ready made food in the front. They have numerous selection of meats and vegetable. The food is hit or miss. Prices are reasonable and portions are ample. The bad- The atmosphere is terrible. It's always filled with 100% male Bangladeshi men that are just creepy and they stare. God forbid if I go in there with my wife, we equally get the stare down and we're both Bangladeshis raised in America!!! They should hand out a burqa to women when they walk in. Last night my brother in law & I went and decided to eat there. Despite many looks, while eating we asked to leave BECAUSE they needed the table for a big gathering of men. I was annoyed, because there were clearly other empty tables there and we were still eating!!! And forget paying with Credit cards, the reaction is worse than cab drivers when they see you pull out the credit/debit card. The Terrible- This place is not clean. And their NYC Dept of Health "B" rating proves it. After giving this place many chances, I will not be returning there. Unless you're fresh off the boat Bangladeshi man, don't bother going there. I'd say for authentic bangali food this restaurant is definitely 2nd place to sagar but with much much better service. One of the best items is the chicken biryani. Also their sweet are very good usually fresh made daily. I placed catering orders during Ramadan and the level of personal service is outstanding. The owner is very pleasant to deal with. South Asian place. Delicious, just like home cooked. I always try the beef bihari kababs... just let them know to not add extra spice. All food is fresh and the naans are something else. Their traditional sweets are also one of the best I've had in the NYC/NJ area. Friendly staff. The setting is like a cafe... lots of locals just pop in for tea and samosas, which gives it a very ethnic and vibrant feel. Very affordable too. Love this place. read more
