Finally saw the door was open (over two hours late) and after perusing the Wonderful Displays I chose several pieces to ask about. I was totally shocked when the owner turned nasty for no reason. I asked if he had been to the Tucson Gem and Jewelry shows and that must of set him off - "Who is asking? Who wants to know?" just kept repeating ... very weird. I am a huge lover of semi-precious gemstones, so I am always on the lookout for good pieces of high quality jewelry at reasonable rates. While I was touring Port Townsend, Derr Jewelry's window had a piece that caught my eye; a stone necklace fashioned with size graduated high color Larimar beads. To be honest, I had to walk on several times to contemplate the price of the piece, but went in to the shop to speak to the owner about it. (For reference, high color Larimar with low matrix inclusion is not inexpensive, and the necklace was very fairly priced.) The clasp on the necklace was an old-fashioned piece he had repurposed; it wasn't working for me. The owner then offered to shift the clasp to a lobster claw clasp... and this service, in the end, is what sold me on my purchase. He heard my tight timetable and was able to restring the piece with the new clasp in 45 minutes. I am over the moon with my Larimar necklace from Derr Jewelry. He has quite a collection of jewelry on offer... if you get a chance, do stop in and look. read more

This is to update my review of 3/16/2021. We finally went to the store and talked to the owner about getting my watch returned. The short story is that I have the watch and it is repaired and I am happy with that. The longer story is that it involved some raised voices. I think the store owner has a good eye for what to buy for the store as there was an appealing mix of good quality watches, necklaces, rings, etc. His assistant is a pleasant helpful woman. The store owner himself was very pleasant the first two times I interacted with him in person in the store, but really not good about following through or responding when he said he would or answering repeated phone calls. If you don't care about communication, then this might be the store for you. In my interactions with him he seemed ethical, but not an interpersonal kind of guy. Which is just fine--I wasn't there for friendship but for jewelry. Bottom line: I would shop there again but be hesitant about a repair. There are COVID times, so we have to give each other some slack. read more

There is no excuse for the rude treatment from this owner. He was supposed make a simple repair on a personal piece. I was quoted 2 days when I dropped off my item. It was still not ready a week later. I had to leave town and was assured my item would be shipped to me at home. Countless phone calls , emails and no response. I finally get a hold of him a full month later. He immediately gets very hostile. He tells me how it was my fault, and that I should have sent someone to pick it up in person. I remained calm and once again gave my shipping information and was promised a tracking number. That was last week and still nothing. No messages, no tracking number no communication of any kind. The item is a one of a kind piece of art and I am concerned I will never see it again. If there is anything you value, Do NOT bring it to Derr Jewelry. The owner is irresponsible and cannot be trusted to do what he says. read more

I took a ring in to be resized and was advised it would be ready in a week and was quoted the cost. I called and requested that the band be strengthened if possible. After three weeks I went back since I had not received a call. The ring was done, but the cost was literally 4xs+ higher than the original quote and I had not been advised or approved the new quote. On inspection I found that there was a flaw in the band so returned to the store. After working on the band for 20 minutes it was returned to me with no improvement. I was fortunate to find another jewelry store (Lisa's in Port Hadlock) and upon their inspection was advised that original repair was so poorly completed and needed to be redone. I was also advised that what I had been charged (for a completely unacceptable "repair") was completely out of line. I had also taken several old family pieces in to be evaluated. When picking up my ring I saw these were just lying around so demanded these be returned, and fortunately was able to get everything back in my possession. I very, very strongly recommend that individuals do not trust anything to this store or owner. Neither reputable or trustworthy. read more

Have shopped here previously and was super impressed with selection. Came back to town and wanted to get a quick gift for a friend. My friend and I went into the store about 5 pm. We clearly must have interrupted the conversation between the two people behind the counter when we asked if they were open. We got a "yep" response and they quickly resumed their conversation while promptly ignoring us. To say I had a horrible experience is truly an understatement. Derr Jewelry provided the WORST experience out of any product or service I have ever received. I would highly recommend any jeweler other than him. My partner & I chose Derr to make a custom marquise-cut diamond engagement ring. From the very beginning his customer service sucked. The kicker is that he BROKE the 1.5 carat marquise diamond that was set in my ring. And he had the audacity to accuse me of breaking it! It was confirmed by a GIA-certified gemologist that he broke the stone when he set it, and he knew it, because a diamond makes a loud sound when it breaks. He lied about it and refused to give us our money back. We lost well over $6000 because of this sketchy jeweler. Plus, he made shopping for an engagement ring, something that should be a lovely experience, an awful one. Derr Jewelry's service is deplorable, borderline criminal, and his workmanship is abysmal. My father gave me HIS grandfather's pocket watch just before he passed away. My father's grandfather, MY great grandfather, was an immigrant from Denmark and the watch in question was well over 100 years old at that point and meant to be passed on to my son. And it needed a bit of repair. Other than one tiny broken piece (as I was told) , it was in perfect condition. Jeff Derr gave it to an elderly man who had a history of watch repair who he had used over the years. As it turned out I phoned the watch repair man MANY times to have my watch returned to me, UNrepaired! I just wanted it back. I begged and was always talked out of it by him promising to either fix it or return it. That was 3 whole years ago. I just called again last Saturday, July 22, but this time when I asked I was told by the watch repair person that he was cleaning out his shop and had taken all the watches back to Derr Jewelry. This is unconscionable to me, especially since I've had a dozen conversations with this man and Jeff Derr and now this? Every time the energy to pursue my watch has come back up for revue, my blood pressure shoots up and again I'm dealing with two men who seemed determined to not give me my watch back. I realize Jeff Derr has many mixed reviews and some actually glowing (unbelievable to me), but I will never set foot in his shop again and have warned others to do to the same. He took a valued heirloom from me with the agreement I would get it back one way or another. To this day that has not happened. I'm currently preparing to file a formal statement about my watch being stolen and naming Jeff Derr as the last person known to have had it. If you have a valuable piece to be repaired, and you live in the Port Townsend area, take the time to find another shop more reputable and capable. Don't lose your precious heirloom to someone who obviously doesn't care if I ever see MINE again. This little store carries a big assortment of jewelry. The owner took over the business from a long time resident and has a great eye for estate pieces as well as new items and pretty things he makes himself. Just picked up my favorite purchase this afternoon, a tiny 1960's gold Rolex with a cord strap that I put on layaway and purchased over the course of a year. It's a gorgeous little watch, tin perfect condition and it makes me happy to finally get it. I notice the reviewer before me implies this owner, or perhaps the prior one, is a cheat. Today when I went in to pay the balance of my watch the owner recognized that he had not appropriately noted the last payment on the watch. I wasn't aware of the date or amount but apparently my boyfriend made it as a Christmas gift. The owner credited the amount without questioning and given the situation I wouldn't have otherwise known. This guy isn't looking to squeeze an extra dollar out of his customers and has a steady clientele of repeat customers, such as myself. I first stumbled into this shop over a year ago. I work in the jewelry field, so I always pop into random stores to see what they are selling, prices, etc. This store is one of the few that blends selling great antique and estate jewelry with brand new custom pieces made by the owner, Jeffrey. From the small size of the store, it seems that they would not have much selection, but this is not the case. He seems to have lots of loose diamonds and colored gemstones that he can make pieces around. I finally went back to see this store yesterday (it is a long way from Seattle) and I was even more impressed. I loved his selection of vintage watches, which were at VERY fair prices. I bought two unusual pieces for my collection, and I was thrilled to learn they give one year guarantees on all of their watches, which is almost unheard of. The experience was made even better by the fun jewelry conversation I had, through which I could tell that Jeffrey knows what he is doing, and is passionate about his craft. I gave these people a ring on Dec 18 that needed to have the stone tightened, told them it was a Christmas present and needed it by the 23rd. The owner was chit-chatting on the phone and didn't bother to wait on me. Eventually a counter girl helped me. Three days later they called back and said it needed 3 prongs replaced and would cost me $100.I said ok and reiterated that I needed it by the 23rd. Waited til Friday the 23rd and called to see when I might get it.They wouldn't tell me a time, just just kept repeating that we'll call you, every time I asked. Called again on the 24th and was told it was disassembled and would not be ready by Christmas. I made a bad mistake using Derr Jewelry. Don't make the same mistake, go some place else that values their customers. Not recommended! read more

tl;dr, I have some non-traditional jewelry that needs resizing and Jeff the jeweler is a total prick. I attempted to visit Derr Jewelry on three separate occasions. On Saturday, the shop was closed two hours early, so I tried again on Wednesday. The lights were on but the door was locked; another customer was waiting on the jeweler and expressed her frustration. I ran some other errands downtown and returned after about 30 minutes to find the door still closed. Finally, today, I venture into town for the third time, and somehow, my experience was far worse than seeing no jeweler at all. We enter the shop and the jeweler is assisting a couple at the counter who are looking at a gold, Egyptian-motif bracelet. The jeweler didn't acknowledge our presence or the additional customer who followed us in. After about 5 minutes, the woman at the counter offered to step aside and let him help the waiting customers, which he begrudgingly did. I have a piece of body jewelry for a surface piercing that needs to be resized. I understand that it is an unconventional piece of jewelry, but it is a quality, hand-crafted item (an absolutely stunning 5mm Australian opal, bezel-set in 14k yellow gold), not some cheap piece of junk jewelry from the mall. The threading is 16g, and I need it to be 18g and I figured someone who repairs both jewelry and watches might be up to the task. Knowing that it would be an unusual job, I brought in the item, as well as a piece of titanium jewelry with the correct threading, and a titanium bar (the female end of the jewelry) for further reference. He glanced at jewelry, said "No" and shoved it back at me. I replied, "I'm sorry?", and he snapped back, "There's nothing I can do with that.", while not even looking in my general direction. What a jerk. He could have said, "I'm sorry, that's not really my line of work," or, "I can't help you with that because X", but instead he just barked, "No". The only thing I regret about my three trips to Derr is that I didn't tell Jeff how incredibly rude he is his face. Give your business to someone nicer. read more

I called first because I was driving 90 minutes to get there. I spoke to a very nice lady and I told her that I wanted to set a stone to a ring that I had and also that I had some silver and gold to sell along with some gems and other stones to show the owner Jeff and if that would be ok. She said that would be fine and that I was excited to come to their store. When I arrived I was greeted by a very nice gentleman who asked me to wait and Jeff will be right there. "This is why they get one star. " Jeff. He came over and was in a hurry from the start he didn't greet me first of all then when I showed him my stone and ring he said I had the wrong combo that the ring I had was for a cushion cut and mine was wrong. I had been told by another jeweler that they were compatible. So ok I'm thinking at this point he just doesn't want to do it Like this is beneath him. So then he started to look at the gemstones I brought and after looking at one of them he said these looked cooked. These are rare rubies sapphires and emeralds and other stones that I had brought and as far as been cooked these stones had not been heated by man and hello by the way these stones was certified with paper work natural and these gems were created by heat and pressure in the first place. Besides man only makes them brighter in color and doesn't affect the integrity or value of the gemstone some argue you may lose some natural occurring vibration by heating them although that hasn't been proven. anyways I had a bag of stuff I was really proud of and he literally gave two minutes of his time, i brought meteorites, carved stones and he just got up and left me there literally holding the bag. It was really embarrassing being treated like a leper. Hey Jeff, service service service. You suck at it, you're a bad employee and could learn a thing or two from your staff. read more

Jeff has been our jeweler since he opened his shop. I would describe him as extremely customer oriented. Every time we visit Port Townsend Derr Jewlery we make it a point to stop in. We have purchased numerous pieces from him and found him to be extremely honest and a thoroughly experienced gemologist. His ring sizing's are reasonable and the pricing is spot-on. In fact his custom sizing and design pricing seems to be about one-half of what we find in larger cities. He's retained many of his custom wholesale jeweler connections he developed while a jeweler in California. I think that's why the pricing seems so good by local standards. Sometimes its a challenge to get him to answer his phone or return phone calls but on the other hand when we visit his shop we feel like we get 100% of his attention. read more

This jeweler sized down (a simple procedure) both my platinum and diamond wedding rings (a diamond engagement ring & a band.) Not sure how this works but it appeared he kept lots of extra platinum which he removed from not just the "cut" he made to size the rings down, but also the entire circumference of both bands, as they were both significantly reduced afterward. I was charged over $100 plus tax for this. I noticed the rings appeared to be different sizes when I tried them on back at home. I've tried contacting his store many times and left a message (in an attempt to get the rings sized properly, although perhaps not a great idea if more platinum is going to be removed again...) No one answers the phone and I've not received a phone call back. For the record- I've had rings sized at other jewelers (Lisa's jewelry in Port Hadlock) and never paid so much for a sizing. Nor has any jeweler "thinned out" the platinum. Almost goes without saying that I've (also) never had a jeweler mistakingly size down rings differently (that are meant to be worn on the same finger.) In sum: bad service, faulty/shady work combined with high pricing = bad yelp rating. read more
