Rob met us, listened to all the issues we wanted to address, and came back with a plan that was so much better than we could have imagined. Rob's being there every day during installation also made it easy to discuss what was happening and make minor modifications. I gave Desert Designer a call after striking out with a few other landscape contractors (no call/no shows, no creativity, and not working within my budget). Rob set up a time to meet and take a look at my yard and listen to my ideas. I was looking for something clean, modern, and a refreshing escape from the same old generic AZ landscape. I gave him my wish list, discussed my style preferences, and my budget. He took it from there and came back a few days later with two options - one of I could stretch the budget and one bang on budget. We then worked together through phone calls and emails to make a few tweaks here and there until the design was settled and within budget. Rob works up a line item estimate so you can see exactly where your money is going. This helps when you are making adjustments and choosing between your wants vs needs. Using this system, I worked with Rob to come up with a design that included my must haves and mix in a few extras while staying on budget. Once the plan was nailed down, initial deposit was paid, they got to work and completed my project in just 4 days. I've had several neighbors comment on the style, design, and positive change I made with my yard since it has been completed. Our backyard was almost as the builders left it 30 years ago. We had no idea what to do with it and called Desert Designers. Sarah came over, sat and talked to get our minimal input and came back 2 weeks later with drawings, options and pricing. We told her to go for it! The pandemic caused a delay in starting the project but Pepe and his crew showed up, worked tirelessly, professionally, with amazing skill and expertise! The photos really don't do it justice! Friends have commented that our yard looks elegant and magical. We feel very fortunate that Sarah answered our call and gave us a yard we can enjoy. I never review anyone but felt I needed to let people know our experience. We hired Desert Designer a number of years ago for a front patio and back patio install. Both were to be built with paver stones. They took 3 days building the front patio, it is still beautiful. No weeds, perfectly level. They took one day to build the back patio where our hot tub was to sit. It seemed rushed and not as well done as the front and it clearly was not nearly as nice as the front. It has weeds coming up between the stones and it was not level when finished and has gotten worse every year. When I mentioned the back patio did not appear to be as well done as the front they threw some extra sand oon top and were done. Currently our hot tub is on such a slant overfilling it to almost overflow on one side does not cover the jets on the other. I can't recommend a company that does such shoddy work. read more

This is sort of a mixed review. There are some positive things to say, and some negative. However, there are a LOT of contractors out there who would have fewer negatives, so I have to go with two stars. We met Cory at a home show. He was very friendly, and his portfolio looked good. So we had him out to check out our yard. After some discussions he produced a quote (which we had to whittle down because he tried to encompass everything instead of just the bits we wanted him to do). After the whittling it was still a bit high, but not completely outrageous. So we signed the contract (I seldom go for the lowest bid...it's usually lowest for a reason!). Here's where it starts to go less-than-perfect. Our project included both water and electricity. It required some permitting. The drawings provided by Cory were lovely, but were not what is required for permitting (or to tell the other contractors what they are working with). We ended up going to a separate draftsman to get proper submission-worthy plans drawn up (extra $$$) because Desert Designer doesn't do that. (really??!) The hardscaping they did had a problem and the water it utilized leaked all over everywhere. They fixed it, but I'm expecting to have to utilize their two-year warranty because I'll bet they're going to get more cracks. However, I can't use that as a basis for rating since that hasn't happened yet. Though I do have to ding for only two years on the warranty...my fault for not insisting on more (at least 5). The electrical failed the first inspection. Most of it was deep enough, but there were a few places where it clearly wasn't. But they called for inspection anyway. Yes, they fixed that too. But it should have been right first time. Even I could see the violation on the first pass. The hardscape feature itself is very lovely. It does have drainage problems (and I'm calling them back to address them - should be easy enough to fix). The water works well. It's really very attractive. So kudos there. Then comes the finishing touches. The mortar used in part of the hardscaping wasn't tinted. It was just gray. They had to fix that. The drainage they still need to fix (can't have pools of water...promotes mosquitoes). And their site cleanup was deplorable. They left a pile of river rock (which they claimed wasn't theirs) instead of putting them over into the hardscape area. They left chunks of rock, concrete, and other debris. Not just the usual little bit here and there, but LOTS of it. Including cigarette butts. The trenches they had to dig are filled, but aren't compacted very well. Cory was very friendly, and seemed genuinely interested in doing a good job and addressing our concerns. He also seems to be very creative. He has some unseen boss that he has to run everything by for approval. And the nitty-gritty stuff (plans/permits, soil compaction, site cleanup...all the boring stuff) is lacking. read more

Our experience with Charlie and his team was awesome! Charlie had some great ideas for our patio space - his knowledge of dogs really helped us settle on the right concept for us and our puppy - and he responded quickly with a drawing and estimate. He was also very accommodating with our schedules for appointments we had. When it came time to do the work, he showed up with the team that morning and made sure we were okay with everything. His team worked quickly and cleaned up well. Charlie was in contact with us through the two days it took to do the work, making sure we were happy with everything. My husband and I met with Sarah to help design our backyard. After our 1st meeting she said she would have our first renderings completed within a few days. A few days later she scheduled a meeting with us to go over her 1st renderings. Although there were several needed changes in her renderings, she said we could have the document for $1000. That included 3 revisions and we could apply our $1000 towards any of their landscaping services. Unfortunately, after we paid her the initial $1000 she stopped returning our messages. After 10 days of not having our 2nd set of renderings we reached out to her boss. In subsequent conversations she stated that the $1000 will only be applied towards work over $8,000. Of which was never discussed in any previous conversation or contract signing. At the end of the day we still don't have our completed renderings. read more

Morgan referred me to Rob and Desert Designer to install his design. Rob was thorough and had a great crew. These guys are amazing. Worked very hard, showed up on time and worked a full hard day. Rob was there when we needed him and keep me informed of progress. They had put some planting in that I didn't think looked right. Rob checked it out and agreed and they had to redo that area. No problem. We know things like this happen and what is key is how do they respond. They made sure everything was right and I was satisfied. Great people to work with and I strongly recommend them. At first the experience was great (I even referred people to them), then I noticed every one of my Desert Spoon plants had a weird plant growing inside it. Our old sales rep came to take a look and told me she'd research the plant and let me know as well as replace the dead ones and i thought, great customer service! Sign me up for my front yard too! The sales rep found out it was a weed and suggested that the Desert Spoon could have had seeds from the weed in it when it was planted but to not touch it because they pollinate during that time of year. The rep made promises to fix my backyard when I got my front yard done. The weed got worse and worse and now my yard is completely destroyed. 2 1/2 months after the initial conversation, I finally asked to speak to a manager because it was taking so long to get the backyard fixed and the yard is now looks horrible and I am so upset I spent so much money and this is happening. After speaking with her and the owner today, (where she admitted the promises she made) the owner started the conversation with the worst attitude I've ever experienced, talked down to me, raised his voice at me, and made accusations towards me that were completely out of line and unprofessional - he then went on to gaslight me after i asked him to stop being condescending towards me. After the way I was spoken to and how I was treated by the staff and owner I requested to cancel my contract on the front yard and asked for my deposit back for my front yard, told them to forget about the backyard and I'll find someone else to fix it and we can walk away and never speak again. I was told absolutely not and quoted "the first line of the contract reads no refunds" every time I tried to speak. This company charged me $15000 to destroy my backyard and doesn't even have the decency to return my deposit on my $10,000 job when I would clearly never want to work with them again in my life for my front yard. It's not like I changed my mind on my landscape and want my money back, they have created a hostile, untrustworthy, and down right poor business and I would never want to spend my money at a place like that. Do not ever use this company for any Landscaping Services. Initially when we started the process we had a great kid named Devin. Devin was very responsive and clear with everything we discussed in our plans. Unfortunately Devin moved two weeks before our project was complete and the owner Tom stepped in. From that moment on it was nothing but a disaster. Tom tried to charge us more then our contract stated, which we objected. Secondly his crew build a fireplace above what the HOA guidelines were listed. Even though these were provided to Devin before the process ever started. After asking Tim about this he claims he was not responsible for the mistake and tried to charge us to fix these errors. since then he has been very unreasonable and unresponsive as previously stated by many others in other reviews about the company. In all fairness to Desert Designer I actually reached out to other landscape companies to see if this was standard. Every one of them stated that if it was them they would be held liable to fix any mistakes made, especially if the HOA guidelines were provided. So Needless to say it was/has been a very disappointing experience with Desert Designer. I would highly advise everyone to not do business with them in the future. read more

I am sad to see the negative reviews posted below:( We chose to work with Cory Sells after a wonderful in home consult. This is for my parents backyard. During the consult we expressed many concerns about low maintenance landscaping because my parents are getting up there in age and because my father has many environmental allergies. So we wanted to make sure it was perfect. After a few days Cory came back with plans drawn we were beyond impressed by what he came up with and decided proceed. We chose a very linear design so all measurements had to be completely precise. A few days before construction Cory came by to go over the plans once again and fully explained that we were allowed to any changes. Which we did. Every step of this entire process was explained fully. About the job: Cory got all permits and HOA approval. He was there on the job site everyday! Which was great because we were able to bring any concerns/questions up next day in person. You just don't get that kind of service these days. The crew was PHENOMENAL, these guys were very hard workers very respectful, and clean. My parents have an award winning back yard. It is beyond anything we could have expected. I could sit and stare at it all day. The best thing is everything is covered by warranty. If something comes up. As far as the other negative reviews below. Come on people... It's YOUR own responsibility to check on which kind of plants you want and appropriate placing of them (I did) . It's YOUR responsibility to research and ask questions (I did). It's YOUR responsibility to be out there everyday over seeing what is going on with YOUR yard (I did). Overall this company and Cory Sells gets an A+. We have used Desert Designer for 3 different projects over the past 2 years. Initially we needed to submit a landscaping plan to the HOA within 30 days of move in, for a newly built home. My husband contacted Charlie at Desert Designer, who was able to capture our vision of what we were looking for and drew up a plan for the front yard, courtyard area, and backyard. Due to financial constraints we started with only the front and courtyard. 6 months later we did most of the backyard. One thing I wanted was an outdoor fireplace, but we didn't have the finances for that at the time, so they did the rest of the backyard, and included a patio area where the fireplace would later be situated. We completed the fireplace this weekend. Charlie has been easy to work with and accommodated all our requests and changes quickly. A minor problem with an outdoor fountain was quickly fixed. All the men on the crews were great too, and cleaned up well. They even went out of their way and raked back gravel that someone else had moved to dig a trench for a gas line (not part of Desert Designer's crew that dug the trench and then left it). After almost 2 years the irrigation system and lighting is still working fine and we love our yard. read more

Rob came out a few months ago for ideas and sent a very general estimate. After that, he kept stringing us along for a meeting. We were aware of their minimum, and were OK with that. He was referred by a friend, so we tried to be patient. We took care of the preliminary work (bermuda removal) with the expectation that they would meet with us to finalize the rest of the work. It's been right around 4 months since Cory Sell and Desert Designer finished our major backyard and patio renovation, and every time we walk outside, my wife and I are just as excited as the first day we came home from work to the finished project. I waited a few months to post this, as I wanted to see how the quality of their craftsmanship and the quality of the Marbella pavers they used would hold up to our 3 dogs running around on it every day. I am extremely happy and proud to say that there is nothing different (no chips in the pavers, no worn down tiles, no cracks, and not even scratches) regarding the structure of the newly created backyard area. Cory was extremely easy to talk with, and both my wife and I agree that he did just an absolutely phenomenal job in taking our idea of what we were looking for with our very basic, rocky backyard, and turned it into a beautiful, livable area with an amazing firepit as the centerpiece. He was extremely thorough in explaining every aspect of what we were looking for, and was always on time. He took care of all the hassles of having to go through the multiple HOA's, and always kept us updated on what was happening in regards to timelines, and was sincere in everything he said. There was no pressure felt at with in feeling like we "had to do this", or "you should do that" and I truly appreciated that. He even drew up different phases for our entire project, and I cannot wait until we are able to proceed with phase 2, as I know I'll definitely be calling Desert Designer to take care of it when we can. After having just completed a pool, spa, and full service Ramada I wasn't looking forward to the landscaping phase of our project. I was expecting more of the same terrible project management, over promise / under deliver, errors, etc. Working with Cory Sell at Desert Designer exceeding my expectations. We met Cory at the Home and Garden show in early March along with 5 other landscape companies. We felt this was the best way to find a landscaper but if you take the same approach fair warning, you will hear some great promises but not a lot of follow through. One landscaper brags about being the college roommate to Brian Urlacher and acts enthusiastic about your project but never gets around to a quote. Another is the largest nursery in the area but the Arcadia designer forgot his ipad that day so he couldn't make any appointments - strike 1, he even commented on how he already missed a customer appointment earlier that day - strike 2. I still called him the next day as he requested but no call back - strike 3. All in all only 3 made it out to the house, of which 2 submitted quotes, and only Cory followed up on some questions I had with the quote. Desert Designer's business model was refreshing compared to our pool and Ramada contractors. DD has dedicated teams that stay on-sight until the project is completed. One individual acts as a working lead and regularly has a print in his hand communicating with the rest of the team and seeing that was a huge confidence builder for me. In summary, the team did a fantastic job. Cory in particular was great with follow up both before and during the project. Tom and Desert Designer are awesome, creative and professional, but execution is everything and he delivers! Over 10 years ago our builder used him for the front yard and the curb appeal is one of the reason we ended up buying the home and then hired Tom to design and complete our backyard at the time, which we have loved. 10 years later we were ready for some upgrades and a refresh and used him again, he did not disappoint. Products and technology he uses today for lighting and irrigation are sweet, individual bulbs that you can change color with an app is pretty cool. Shout out to Tom's team including Pepe and his skilled tradesman that worked on our project-they are talented...one of the masons was telling me he and his son in law worked on our original yard a decade ago and how great Tom was to work for, I believe history in that business makes all the difference. Rob came over multiple times during the planning process and came up with a beautiful rendering that we loved. He had ideas we hadn't even thought about or considered including lighting and sound. He connected us with a third party to build us a pergola as well, working hand and hand with them so the project went seamlessly (vendor came to put in the posts before Rob put in the pavers, came back when it was done to install lighting, etc.) Most amazingly, the project was done in a matter of days. Our neighbors couldn't believe it, their similar projects had taken months! But the best part is, nearly a year later, when we have questions or issues about plants (even silly watering questions!) This is the 3rd time I've hired Desert Designer to do a project for me (2 at previously owned homes). We completed a new build in May 2017 in Buckeye on bit of a hillside. I gave our designer, Cory, our inspirations for a zen backyard. It isn't a large yard and I wanted to create a calm relaxing space. Additionally, I wanted part of the yard to serve as a pollinator area for bees and butterflies. Cory came up with a fantastic solution. We went back and forth on a few of the details and he worked within our budget. The plants size was great and they were healthy. They also worked hard on the travertine, pulling up a section of several feet when they discovered by builder had given me a slightly curved foundation. They have come out several time when I had questions about things like irrigation settings, etc. They also replaced a couple plants that didn't survive the first couple weeks after planting. We met the company July 2016 at a home show. They were nice and worked quickly to get a design and promised us so many things.....then we signed the contract and our sales person/Designer was gone. We were put in touch with another landscape designer that was with the company. He was not as connected with the project or the things we were promised. We went with the pool designer they recommended and stated they would work with this company every step of the way. Including ensuring the same gas guy did the project and we would only have to pay for one permit. This never happened. We spent over $2k for gas lines and permits where if they had communicated we would have spent $1k. Had I not been here the day the outlines everything the project would have been a disaster. The person reading the plans was measuring in a smaller scale than the plans stated. Making everything miniaturized. Additionally, there are dark spots that do not have enough lighting. They didn't communicate with the pool company for the placement of the equipment and it messed up our design. We had to flip the entertainment area. Also the fire pit doesn't seem to work as promised. The element is almost even with the top of the pit there for there is no protection for the flame so the wind blows it flat. Our finished product is beautiful but we do have some flaws and the follow up customer service has been 2 Star. They did replace a few plants that died but didn't replace them with flowering plants instead the did more succulents. There for taking away the few splashes of color we had. I often wonder if we had hired another company we would have had the same finished product costing us much less. Our hard scape (travertine) was the best part of the job. They do very nice travertine work. read more

Good for masonry work. Most of the plants they installed eventually died. After they were done we realized months later that They didn't put down enough granite. I made a few phone calls to them regarding this. Eventually I spoke with owner and all I wanted was for someone to stop buy and let me know how much I should buy to cover areas they missed. Yes, I got to the point where I was willing to pay for it. They never showed up and never called me back. Spent a lot of money on this hoping for a better experience. Live and learn. read more

I hired Desert Designers to convert the concrete slab that was my backyard into an inviting space to entertain and relax. After removing many square feet of concrete, Rob Plowright and his team converted my backyard into a desert oasis. I met Rob Plowright with Desert Designer at the home show in February 2016. Rob was one of five landscape designers who I interviewed. I ultimately decided to go with Desert Designer because Rob understood how I wanted to use my yard and the problems that I had with the space in its original state. Rob came up with a great plan that was functional and esthetically pleasing. In fact, he took an off-hand comment that I had made about eventually wanting a container garden on the side yard, and came up with a unique container garden that will withstand prolonged sun exposure without deteriorating. Rob is also extremely organized and detail-oriented. He was the only one of the five designers who I interviewed who scheduled a follow-up appointment at the time of our first meeting. Within a week of our first meeting, I had received multiple emails with alternative price lists and pictures of the proposed plants. At our second meeting, Rob presented his plans with line-item pricelists, walked me through two proposals, and explained to me why he made the choices that he did. Although other designers may have had fancier presentations with 3D computer models, Rob's plan was spot-on to my vision and under budget! In fact, because the estimate was so reasonable, I ultimately expanded the project to include additional landscaping in the backyard and replacement of the irrigation system in the front yard. Rob was also patient and responsive to the numerous questions that I emailed him sent before, during, and after the project was complete. On the day my project was scheduled to begin, the Desert Designer team was on time (maybe even earlier), and worked quickly without sacrificing attention to detail. Not only did the team work efficiently, finishing the project in just four days, but it was done perfectly, and my yard and the street were immaculate. Even my neighbors commented on how great a job Desert Designers had done on cleaning up. And because the workers are employees, and not merely contracted for the day or project, I didn't worry while I was at work about whether they would show up or complete the day. The following day, I met Rob at my house where he gave me an orientation on plant care, the new irrigation system, and the warranty on the pavers and labor. Like any home improvement project, there were a few hiccups along the way, but I had complete confidence that Desert Designer would make sure the job was completed to the highest standards. I had reached out to several landscapers to get a consultation on my front yard. Out of the 3 that were referred to me by friends, only Desert Designer actually came through. I worked directly with Charlie Goodman from the start to finish. He came out and did a walk through to understand what I wanted, take measurements, etc. He came back with a design that was nice, but for some reason, didn't make me go "wow" so I gave him some additional ideas and thoughts, and the second design he did created definitely made me go "WOW" immediately. He completely captured what I wanted without me being able to really describe it!! We set a date, did the contract and he was able to figure out ways to stay within my budget. Everything he promised, was delivered on. The crew was out at my house exactly when he said, and finished the job in 2 days. He checked in each day. A couple weeks later I noticed one of my plants was going to grow to be in the way of my back gate, so I called Charlie and that same week he came out personally and re-located the plant for me. We had three bids and designs submitted and all were relatively close in price and concept on a front yard, back yard remodel including pavers, plants, stacked stone, lighting, spa, outdoor kitchen, etc. The DD team was great and incredibly responsive. Things are never going to go perfectly, but when they hit a challenge Rob/Charlie were engaged and made it right even when it meant a Saturday emergency visit to adjust a plan on the fly. The final product exceeded our expectations and they did it on the agreed to budget and even threw in a few extras along the way. Can't say enough good things about them. read more

I would not recommend this company to anyone. We had around $20K of work done by them last year. They did landscaping, artificial turf, redid our irrigation system and installed a drainage pipe from our patio to street. The front yard looked nice, but the plants they planted were too small and a horticulturalist said they were put in the wrong places and with a very poor irrigation setup that was archaic. They totally botched the irrigation to our fruit trees in the backyard installing an archaic drip style system with minimal water to hit only surface spots under the trees. We have since had that and many of the plants in the front yard redone by another company, so we have paid twice. They messed up the drain pipe and cut into our pool refiller line causing a big leak. They planted in July of last year and almost half of the plants they put in died (they did replace them for up to 4 months). But that does not undo the fact that many were too small to survive the summer heat at that time of year (we were supposed to have the work done in March not July and should have refused the July date, but they had over half of our money). We had them come back out many times to fix the irrigation and they always just made new mistakes. They are nice and hardworking, but just do not know what they are doing. Rob and Desert Designer were contracted by my pool builder, Saturn Pools, to do the pool deck in pavers. I asked Rob to give me a design and bid for the remaining landscape for our new home. Rob's design was very good and very much what we had envisioned. The hardscape was masterful, especially the dry stacked stone on the back of the pool. The plants are newly in, but they are healthy, if a little small (but certainly now smaller than others' in our new neighborhood). Small detail: they use different volume emitters for the different plant needs. Not everyone does that, I have found. Seems like a no brainer. Rob's team was polite, clean, and the jobsite was respected. No litter, no smoking. When they finished my pool job I gladly treated them to lunch as they had earned my respect and gratitude. The price was competitive, but I am sure we could have gone cheaper. I checked him out with the ROC and he was clean. His recommendation from my pool builder (a personal friend) carried weight, as well. Advice to someone new to AZ and landscaping. Do your homework and be informed. Get a book on landscaping in the desert so you will know what people are selling you. Communicate! This was a strength with Rob. We worked together well and I would hire them again. read more

Desert Designer did a fantastic job with our front yard landscaping. Charlie, our landscape architect, came up with an amazing plan that really improved the curb appeal of the home. The job consisted of multiple areas of pavers, new plants and trees. There were some glitches along the way, as can be expected with any project, but Charlie and the crew were always willing to resolve them. Charlie even came out on a hot afternoon to re-plant a tree that was placed in the wrong area!! We are really pleased with how the front yard landscaping turned out and would use them again for other projects. read more
