We were around the area and decided to stop by this gem we are thinking on having our wedding rehearsal here. Valet is only on Saturday's, more parking in the back. Love the desert vibe, live music on Friday. Service was great and drinks are worth every penny. I regret not purchasing a bottle, but we will be back!

Never had I even heard of Sotol before coming here. This was such a cute place, great outdoor area and great service. The drinks were delicious and the spicy drinks actually spicy. I love spicy so that was perfect! Usually when you get a spicy drink they aren't too spicy and be dry mild but this had some kick! I got a flight and really enjoyed every one. They are dog friendly as well which was great!

Immediately loved the ambiance here--it was welcoming from the moment you drive up! We each got a cocktail before the tour and I tasted each. Holy smokes, I was impressed that each one was refreshing and unique. We did the tour as well and had so much fun seeing the unique process for sotol and having a small tasting of each type. We bought several things from the small, but tasteful gift shop!

We loved our entire experience at Desert Door Distillery! We were welcomed immediately by friendly staff, chose a seat on their outside patio and a server immediately can over right away! We started with the flight to try three sotols. I fully enjoyed the sotol even though tequila is not my liquor of choice. Sotol is much better! Our server Katie was so friendly and gave us great recommendations on their mixed drinks as well explained what sotol is all about. Fun bonus, there was an oyster food truck. So delicious! There was also a taco food truck but didn't try that. Per Katie's recommendation, we tried their rotating desert door frozen. It was coconut pineapple flavored and so perfect on this hot day. I wish I lived in Texas so I could come back more! But if we come back to Austin this will not be missed!

My travel to Desert Door on a Sunday was the best. The people here are so nice and the place is so welcoming. There is free parking in the front and more parking in the back. They have indoor and outdoor sitting. They have complimentary water available which is great in the hot Texas summer. I ordered a flight of drinks which contained the delicious Sotal that they make. Sotal is not tequila, it is not mezcal, it is Sotal which is clean, delicious and tequila's smoother more sustainable cousin. Go to Desert Door learn and drink about Sotal it's delicious.

I had wanted to visit Desert Door for years, and on our visit to Texas a few weeks ago, our drive from Fredericksburg to Austin was the perfect opportunity! Desert Door is the only commercial distiller of sotol in the United States. How cool is that?! I first had sotol in Tulum in 2017 and have been happy to find it making its way onto more menus in the U.S. since then. When I learned of Desert Door, I followed them on Instagram and saved it in my brain to remember to visit when I was next visiting the area. What is sotol? If you haven't had it before, it is a spirit made from the sotol plant (whereas mezcal and tequila are made from the agave plant), which is native to northern Mexico and the southwestern US (including West Texas). What is Desert Door? It's a distillery and a tasting room! It was started by three veterans who met as MBA students at UT who wanted to start a distillery and ended up becoming the first US commercial producers of sotol! (There's a really interesting New Yorker article about them and Desert Door!) What is Desert Door like? The tasting room has an inside area as well as lots of outdoor seating (covered with fans or heaters depending on the season). The outside seating is gorgeous and that's where we sat earlier this month (you know, one of those 60-degree January days in Texas!). The space is gorgeous. It also had a food truck (so you can stay and drink for hours)! And the service was excellent. We started with a couple of flights, since it was our first visit! One flight was of their sotols (the original, the oak-aged, and a special series sotol), and the other was a flight of their cocktails. I definitely recommend you try their sotols straight if you haven't had sotol before, but the cocktails are great - creative, fun, and delicious. I love when a place lives up to expectations you've had and built up for years. Desert Door did that. It's just awesome. A unique place, making a unique product, with great drinks, vibes, and customer service. I highly recommend checking it out.

Sotol? What the heck is Sotol? Here is what I learned on our visit. Sotol differs from mezcal and tequila which are produced using the agave plant, sotol is produced using the sotol plant. The sotol plant is also called the desert spoon. According to our server, their sotol is produced using wild plants that are natural to Tejas. If tequila and mezcal cocktails are your jam you will thoroughly enjoy sotol. Sotol is perfect for sipping or in a cocktail. My Favs were their paloma (with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice). Second was their Oak-Aged Texas Sotol finished in Garrison Brothers casks. You can order as an old-fashioned or straight-up. This is as close as possible to a smooth bourbon and would be perfect in an old-fashioned. There is also a food truck that serves up more than your typical brew pub - distillery fare. Think a wild-game-inspired menu. Be sure to visit their (really cool) website, https://www.desertdoor.com, before visiting. Pro tip: Their tasting room is cozy but there is also a large patio with heaters. If you plan to visit on a cold day you can reserve an inside table.

We drove by and we both yelled "Stop! We have to check this cool place out!" We pulled in and were pleasantly surprised how great the vibe is. Ordered an Essential Flight of their top 4 cocktails and it was soooo good! Plus queso and chips that were delicious. First time learning about Sotol. Check this cool place out especially the awesome front patio with live music.

If I could rate this place a 6, I'd do it. Came here with a friend around 6:30 on a Thursday, so close to closing at 8, and we legit tried almost half the menu. Every single drink was amazing, and our bartender Rico was SUPER helpful (and funny too!). He definitely knows sotol, and he's good enough at his job to tailor drinks to your taste. Definitely sit through sotol history -- it's fascinating (and quick, so don't worry)! This spot is awesome because they've built that into the experience. There's a side to the menu that the bartender flips up to show you (right side up) a little extra info about the sotol plant. As somebody who knew zero info about sotol before my visit, I definitely appreciated that touch. If you love yourself, ask Rico or Zach what's on their secret menu. We absolutely enjoyed everything about this place. We had outstanding service provided by Erin and Holly. They were able to answer all of our questions. They were able to educate us about the spirits that are made there. We now keep their Texas Sotol in stock in our home bar. We got caught in a severe rainstorm so we decided to move from outside to inside. When we got inside, they had the fireplace going and had created a really cozy atmosphere for those of us that were there. They have a great store on site and we were so happy with our drinks that we purchased some Sotol in the gift store. Food from the food truck was excellent. This is a beautiful facility with excellent cocktails. read more

Agave...you're surely familiar with Tequila and maybe Mezcal, but meet your new fav plant based spirit: Sotol Indigenous to Texas, this abundant plant yields some of the most delicious and mellow agave spirits around, perfect for sipping neat or using as a base in cocktails. The distillery is gorgeous with a modern woody vibe. Saddle up to the bar featuring Sotol cocktails, curl up around the fireplace or grab some picnic tables outside with the whole crew. They also feature live music. I highly recommend taking the tour ($10)...David is a most excellent host & knowledgeable dude...which includes tastings. Atmosphere is wonderful. Feels like you're in a wonderfully decorated dessert home. Cozy, clean and trendy. Sotol is a unique light drink that does down smooth. Just came back a short trip to Austin and San Antonio. On the way to Austin, we had a chance to stop by Driftwood and go to this little distillery. Their spirit made of wild Sotol plants was unique and tasty. There was live music outside, and about 10-12 people chilling in their cozy tasting room. Our bartender Zach was very informative and helpful. He educated us about Sotol, gave us a lot of good tips about bars and restaurants in Austin. All in all, it was a very good experience. We came back with two bottles of their younger Sotol, as there was a waiting list for the aged one. You should definitely stop by if you are in the area. read more

We really enjoyed this place. It was interesting to see the concept and hear the background of how it came to be. It's a lot like tequila, but less burn at the end for me. We learned a lot from our bartender Zack who actually explained a lot about the stool itself, the cocktails and the bartenders special, which you should try by the way. The comanchero or something to that effect was mighty tasty as well as one of the drinks with ginger, I can't remember the name. They are definitely worth a visit! read more

We really enjoyed the tour with Doot as our tour guide. He was very informative and upbeat throughout the tour. Seeing the plant go from heart to an actually alcohol was neat. The distillery had a cool atmosphere that matched the western theme of the sotol plant used in the alcohol. Being in Austin, one would think 'I'm going to have some great whiskey!' However, when I heard there was a sotol distillery, I knew I had to go. Sotol is its own spirit, which is native to northern Mexico, West and Central Texas. The sotol plants only produces flowers once every few years, which makes it even more delicious. It was located a little further out in the desert, which is common for Texas through. The facility looks normal on the outside, however the decor on the inside is super dope! They have awesome wood furniture throughout the place, and dope art pieces hanging up. Decent size showroom plus outside seating with cornhole. We sat at the bar and got educated on Sotol by our bartenders, great people. Now onto the good stuff, what does sotol taste like? Its unique in taste where it does not taste like tequila or mezcal, its own thang. Its smooth, Earthy and delicious. Its so light with no after taste. I ended up purchasing a bottle to take home ($55), bit hefty price tag but it is only produced in Texas, so I can't complain. I would definitely recommend checking them out. It was a dope experience. read more

The Sotol is smooooth. I was expecting something closer to the bite of tequila, but no! We stopped in for a libation, and was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful drink presentation and the cozy tasting room. They have a large outdoor patio, and a food truck nearby. Overall an excellent experience. We bought two bottles of Sotol before we left. We can't wait to try our hand at mixing some Sotol cocktails at home. read more

I love the personality of this place! I might have been a little weary trying Sotol for the first time, but I truly am hooked! The indoor and outdoor design puts you at ease while you're sipping your next favorite cocktail. The place is dog friendly which is always a plus when you have an active pup, and everyone that works there is genuinely nice. This place was recommended by a couple locals and we're so happy we stopped by. We've never had this type of liquor and from what I understand this is the only place in America that produces this type of liquor. It's a lot like tequila but smoother, maybe a little sweeter. We've live in Driftwood for 11 years and passed by this place hundreds of times. Friends kept telling us to stop by, and we began to see Desert Door cocktails appear on local restaurant menus. We finally gave it a try while a friend was visiting from out of town and now we are HUGE fans. Doot very kind to recognize our son recently turning 21 on our first visit. And then Erin gave us outstanding service this Thursday on locals night. Tried the food truck for the first time. GET THE NILGAI STEAK! The Sotol sauce what amazing and similar to au poivre but with a great kick. I'm told the quail sandwich is also popular, so I'll need to come back to try that. Loved the cocktail sampler for my first visit and have now tried 3 other cocktails. All great drinks that are carefully crafted. Happy to report this as our new favorite local hangout! Quaint, hidden distillery outside Austin that makes for a fun day out of the city. The cocktails are great and the food truck is filled with unique, delicious bites to snack on while hanging out. We did the sotol tour today and had a great time! Our tour guide, KB, was phenomenal and very thorough in her explanations. The darker sotol has a taste pretty close to scotch, which was very interesting. Overall, great time and we even stopped in the gift shop and grabbed a few things to remember the experience by. I stopped by on a sunny afternoon and instantly loved the relaxed vibe. Picnic tables under the trees, plenty of space to spread out, and super friendly staff who are clearly proud of what they're pouring. It's a place where you can settle in and stay a while. I tried a flight and was impressed across the board--especially the IPA and their rotating small-batch brew, which had great balance and depth without being too heavy. They're clearly doing more than just cranking out the basics here; there's real thought in the brewing. The food truck on site is a big bonus. I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries--absolutely hit the spot. Great portions, flavorful, and a perfect match for a cold pint on a warm day. What really sets Bell Springs apart, though, is the atmosphere. It's family-friendly, dog-friendly, and totally unpretentious. You're as likely to see a group of locals playing cards as you are a couple sharing a bottle from the winery next door. If you're looking for a casual, beautiful spot to enjoy craft beer, good food, and good company, Bell Springs Brewing should be on your list.
