Very neat being able to try a different type of liquor, similar to tequila and mezcal.. yet earthier. I feel like most people have not heard of this type of liquor before and will be in for a really good surprise. Their sotol is much smoother with little to no bite as compared to a tequila and with a little bit of an earthy, rich aftertaste on the finish. Perfect liquor to mix with other tequila like mixers such as margs or ranch water, etc. The location is super cool and within easy distance of Salt Lick if you're looking to grab a bite or check a few places while out in Driftwood. For most, this is a very cool experience and take on something that resembles tequila yet is more smooth and sustainable than the former. read more

Me and my family came down here one Friday night around 6PM and played some card games. We had never had the type of liquor they serve so we got the flight to try everything out. Then we ordered out drinks, the best of which were the espresso martini and the cucumber drink (cucumber was so refreshing in the heat). We sat outside because it was full inside but the inside was much cuter. Everything was decorated great, the bathrooms were very nice, there was even a little shop I think which I didn't stop in but should have. My family brought cards but there was also live music playing which was nice. Eventually we got dinner which was outstanding. The hamburgers and watermelon salad where the best by far and what I would get if I went back again. The duck taco wasn't bad, just not very filling for what you got and pretty simple. The only downside to the place was there wasn't too much service and it was just average service as well. Personally I didn't mind, our orders got taken and came out timely which is all that I personally care about but my parents probably would have given this place a 4 star because they felt the service could have been better. If I could rate this place a 6, I'd do it. Came here with a friend around 6:30 on a Thursday, so close to closing at 8, and we legit tried almost half the menu. Every single drink was amazing, and our bartender Rico was SUPER helpful (and funny too!). He definitely knows sotol, and he's good enough at his job to tailor drinks to your taste. Definitely sit through sotol history -- it's fascinating (and quick, so don't worry)! This spot is awesome because they've built that into the experience. There's a side to the menu that the bartender flips up to show you (right side up) a little extra info about the sotol plant. As somebody who knew zero info about sotol before my visit, I definitely appreciated that touch. If you love yourself, ask Rico or Zach what's on their secret menu. Just came back a short trip to Austin and San Antonio. On the way to Austin, we had a chance to stop by Driftwood and go to this little distillery. Their spirit made of wild Sotol plants was unique and tasty. There was live music outside, and about 10-12 people chilling in their cozy tasting room. Our bartender Zach was very informative and helpful. He educated us about Sotol, gave us a lot of good tips about bars and restaurants in Austin. All in all, it was a very good experience. We came back with two bottles of their younger Sotol, as there was a waiting list for the aged one. You should definitely stop by if you are in the area. read more

We really enjoyed this place. It was interesting to see the concept and hear the background of how it came to be. It's a lot like tequila, but less burn at the end for me. We learned a lot from our bartender Zack who actually explained a lot about the stool itself, the cocktails and the bartenders special, which you should try by the way. The comanchero or something to that effect was mighty tasty as well as one of the drinks with ginger, I can't remember the name. They are definitely worth a visit! read more

We really enjoyed the tour with Doot as our tour guide. He was very informative and upbeat throughout the tour. Seeing the plant go from heart to an actually alcohol was neat. The distillery had a cool atmosphere that matched the western theme of the sotol plant used in the alcohol. We've live in Driftwood for 11 years and passed by this place hundreds of times. Friends kept telling us to stop by, and we began to see Desert Door cocktails appear on local restaurant menus. We finally gave it a try while a friend was visiting from out of town and now we are HUGE fans. Doot very kind to recognize our son recently turning 21 on our first visit. And then Erin gave us outstanding service this Thursday on locals night. Tried the food truck for the first time. GET THE NILGAI STEAK! The Sotol sauce what amazing and similar to au poivre but with a great kick. I'm told the quail sandwich is also popular, so I'll need to come back to try that. Loved the cocktail sampler for my first visit and have now tried 3 other cocktails. All great drinks that are carefully crafted. Happy to report this as our new favorite local hangout! Being in Austin, one would think 'I'm going to have some great whiskey!' However, when I heard there was a sotol distillery, I knew I had to go. Sotol is its own spirit, which is native to northern Mexico, West and Central Texas. The sotol plants only produces flowers once every few years, which makes it even more delicious. It was located a little further out in the desert, which is common for Texas through. The facility looks normal on the outside, however the decor on the inside is super dope! They have awesome wood furniture throughout the place, and dope art pieces hanging up. Decent size showroom plus outside seating with cornhole. We sat at the bar and got educated on Sotol by our bartenders, great people. Now onto the good stuff, what does sotol taste like? Its unique in taste where it does not taste like tequila or mezcal, its own thang. Its smooth, Earthy and delicious. Its so light with no after taste. I ended up purchasing a bottle to take home ($55), bit hefty price tag but it is only produced in Texas, so I can't complain. I would definitely recommend checking them out. It was a dope experience. read more

The Sotol is smooooth. I was expecting something closer to the bite of tequila, but no! We stopped in for a libation, and was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful drink presentation and the cozy tasting room. They have a large outdoor patio, and a food truck nearby. Overall an excellent experience. We bought two bottles of Sotol before we left. We can't wait to try our hand at mixing some Sotol cocktails at home. read more

I love the personality of this place! I might have been a little weary trying Sotol for the first time, but I truly am hooked! The indoor and outdoor design puts you at ease while you're sipping your next favorite cocktail. The place is dog friendly which is always a plus when you have an active pup, and everyone that works there is genuinely nice. We've never had this type of liquor and from what I understand this is the only place in America that produces this type of liquor. It's a lot like tequila but smoother, maybe a little sweeter. We did the sotol tour today and had a great time! Our tour guide, KB, was phenomenal and very thorough in her explanations. The darker sotol has a taste pretty close to scotch, which was very interesting. Overall, great time and we even stopped in the gift shop and grabbed a few things to remember the experience by. Brent is a native of Midland and 5th generation Texan. After a brief stint as a manufacturing engineer, he followed his dream of becoming a naval aviator and served 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. As for the food I went with the Connecticut-style lobster roll since it was a warm afternoon, but the menu offers a solid variety of seafood and non-seafood options along with some delicious desserts like the key lime pie which I also got to try. Prices are definitely on the higher side as expected with quality seafood, but I had a coupon that helped offset the cost. I can't say I'd come here regularly because of the price point, but if I'm in the area and craving seafood this would easily be my go-to place.

The two cask offerings are out of this world. Can't remember the names but one is a dark beer and the other a bitter. I'm here all day for them. Like all day. They also have a nitro milk stout I can't wait to get my lips on. Milk stouts (stouts in general) are another fave of mine. The brewery is welcoming and I loved the vibe from the minute we pulled up. Tap room decor is rustic. They've got a nice outdoor patio with a food truck (The White Hart-good eats). Cool patrons and staff. These guys know their stuff.

It's obviously referencing Matthew McConaughey who went to college in Austin (but is originally from the San Antonio area). Lots of Austin folks make references to the actor. In the flavor profile for this beer it is juicy, citrus which contributes to a strong overall flavor but is yet smooth with this hazy. It's a nice solid beer overall. The location for this brewery is great, large place and it's in Hill Country.
