Husband and I stopped in after being recommended to come here. They were fairly busy for Sunday. We went to the bar and we're told to sit down and that someone would come to our table with menus. About 5-10 minutes later we were given menus but then waited another 20 minutes after that for our order to be taken. We left without being served. read more

I had never heard of sotol before going to Desert Door. Now that I have and now that I have made the trip to Desert Door I will be drinking it regularly. I have always loved tequila, it's just that tequila doesn't love me. Shots, Sunrises, Margaritas I love them all, it just leads to a bad result usually. I don't seem to have the same issue with sotol tho. Sotol has a tequila type taste with a milder finish it seems. The sotol plants used are harvested in West Texass so it is a local produced liquor. Anything you make with tequila I imagine you can use sotol and not notice a change. A tasting will come in a chilled ceramic copita and man is it smooth. The drinks they make are freakin' fantastic and highlight the taste of the sotol. The tasting room and outside area are excellent for sitting around and drinking with friends. I urge my Cali Asian friends who are hooked on Patron (u know who u are!) to give this place a visit on your next trip to Austin, I promise you will walk out a believer. Travelling to Driftwood from Austin still sucks but don't let that stop you from making the trip. They currently open Thur -Sun. read more

Couldn't find out how it was because I was ignored while I was there. If the server doesn't have enough experience to serve well independently, they should be accompanied. Waste of two hours, and the drinks I was able to order were trash. I left a tip like an idiot only because the good server rescued me, and I wasn't her table. I don't care if they share or not, if anyone has a bad, unaccompanied trainee at any service with which it's customary to tip, they should receive a discount instead of having to tip. read more

I am a new sotol fan after coming to Desert Door. As an avid tequila lover, I was impressed with Desert Door Sotol's drinkability. (And this is coming from someone who typically doesn't care for drinking straight liquor at all). The cocktails were fantastic and were obviously crafted to highlight the sotol. None were too sweet or overpowering. The Margarita was nice and spicy (my request), and the Paloma was fantastic. The service was also outstanding. So many times I have been to distilleries and wineries where the servers/bartenders couldn't care less about the product they are pouring. The bartenders here were so warm and were obviously passionate about mixology and their product. I will definitely be back! read more

I just came to talk about the sotol. I've never been to the distillery, but plan to soon. I'm not that far. I have had many different sotol. I have had dark ones, yellow ones, but never a sotol so clear. I know quite a bit about tequila and have had a wide variety of them. The Desert Door sotol stands apart. I was able to get a generous sample, 300 ml, and spent a good 20 minutes with it. It is absolutely brilliant! The aroma is full of spices and citrus, cinnamon and grapefruit. The bite in the bouquet was so potent that I had to check to proof. The label reported 80, but it seemed quite the understatement. Once I felt the bouquet was properly gauged and the spirits appropriately aired, I started sipping and breathing...and sipping and breathing. This is clearly one of the most vibrant sotol I have ever had the pleasure to experience. It seemed to evaporate right of the tongue leaving a clean finish with all the promise of cinnamon and grapefruit I had previously inhaled. Incredibly clear without the smoky undertones one might enjoy with other sotol or mezcal, Desert Door left me with only floral undertones that reminded me less of eucalyptus and more of tea tree. I could taste it on my lips for almost an hour. This, of course, was after I could feel my tongue and vocal chords. It was a very pleasant numbing 80 plus proof. I swear this liquor has way more bite than 80 proof. This is for sipping and not for shooting. I wouldn't even mix this wonderful liquid. It has far more flavor than you can get from a sugary companion, a Serrano or jalapeno would be more appropriate. I highly recommend this liquor. It is absolutely fantastic. read more

Yes. Sí! YUP. The place is beautiful, the people are great, and the booze is interesting. What's sotol?? Is it like vodka? Like tequila? We with the curious mouths must try it! Ok, so now how do I describe it? Imagine a cross between a good tequila and an herb-forward gin: complex and desert-earthy and a smidge smoky..finishing with a smooth, peppery sensation like a delightful tease, beckoning you back for more. Or: it tastes like desert beauty. I dig the ride. And THEN. Then try it in a cocktail. Several Different Cocktails, actually, because different parts of this delicious beast come forward in the different concoctions Desert Door's Booze Badass Amber whips up. Kinda like the way the desert landscape takes on different character in different light. A tasting is $5. Cocktails sell for city prices, but they're properly fresh and hand crafted before your eyes behind the beautiful wood bar. Pretty ceramic bottles of the desert elixir retail for $55 (max 2 per month per person; you seriously hafta present your license for tracking per current law). May sound steep, but this isn't a $20 bottle of booze. We're lucky this portal to the desert was erected in our general vicinity, saving us the drive to West Texas. If I recall properly: aged spirit drops mid to late January; hopefully distribution will start in February. My next visit will be planned so I can fully geek out on the tour. read more

We were visiting Austin for the weekend and one thing I love to do on any adventure is to find a distillery. It was about 30 minutes outside of Austin, but it was well worth it. There was lots of outdoor seating, but it was packed, so we ended up sitting in this room (not the main room), which housed a bunch of barrels. We had a wonderful server that gave us a quick rundown of what they produced. We ordered the flight and about 4 drinks each. All the drinks were amazing, but I would have to say my favorite was the Comanchero. Our small group of 4 absolutely loved the whole experience and ended up going home with a few bottles!
