This place is super chill. Love the vibes inside, pretty intimate with limited seating options. Outside on the porch they had some live music playing. This place makes their own Sotol which they compare it as a cousin to tequila. It's in between mezcal & tequila in flavor but it's goes down very smooth which helps the drinks flow faster and better. The servers here are great. They come around frequent to make sure you've always got something to sip on. Can't wait to come back to this patio in the fall. read more

First time trying Sotol, and there wasn't a cocktail on the menu that wasn't incredibly delicious. We sat outside in the lovely fall weather, enjoyed some acoustic tunes by a talented duo with a female vocalist, and tried several cocktails -- all of which we enjoyed. My friend tried the frozen Bartender's Choice which was like a frozen apple cinnamon cocktail, and I tried the Comanchero, the Yipping Coyote, and the Rugged Flower. Each were so smooth and well-balanced. This place not only makes a flavorful Sotol with a smooth, clean finish but transforms it into mouth-watering mixology masterpieces! Aside from the bus loads of out-of-town tourists who looked like they were part of an Instagram filter for an "Ashley/Ashleigh" compilation (complete with brimmed hat, scarf, and boots), this place is a must-visit if you're in Austin. I'm not a drinker. Just not. Get roofied a couple of times and suffer from migraines and you'll avoid alcohol like the plague. But this was a special occasion and my bff for 21 years and I thought it was appropriate to celebrate here. TL;DR: I bought a bottle to bring home. So we rock up, get parking right up front (princess parking FTW) and get seated inside (thankfully as it was starting to be a scorcher). Live music played outside, and we were sat right by the window. Our waitress (whose cousin lives in Maine and apparently looks like me) was a slice of Texas hospitality that seems to be more and more rare in the Austin area. She was so welcoming, so helpful. Explained the process of making sotol vs tequila and got us all set with our drinks. The drinks were. Again--I'm not an alcohol drinker. I don't like the taste of alcohol generally. But there were 2 drinks that stood out -- the spicy margarita and one with a slice of lime that looked and tasted just like pink lemonade. A pitcher of that and I would have been done for the day. It was DELICIOUS. It's super cool what they're doing at Desert Door as well (taking an invasive weed and making alcohol out of it -- leave it to Texans, am I right?). Prices for cocktails were reasonable (below standard but I'm used to Seattle and New York prices at this point so my perspective is tainted). Bonus points for close proximity to the OG Salt Lick. I'm generally not a huge fan of tasting rooms and find them gimmicky and far from truly experiencing the spirit of the spirit. See what I did there. But every rule has its exception, or exceptional. Desert Door is a destination in itself. Beautiful southwestern interiors and stylish furniture. The space is cozy but didn't feel crowded, though every table was full. They do have a large patio for outdoor seating and bigger groups. Now, the sotol. I had never heard of it and didn't know what to expect. The best way I can describe it is an agave spirit, clear, between a vodka and a tequila in its thickness/smoothness. In plain English, it's delicious. We did the tasting flight, which was a great way to get introduced to a new spirit, followed by a round of cocktails. The cocktails were excellent and reasonably priced. Visited the Desert Door with some friends this weekend and tried Sotol for the first time. My boyfriend had the ranch water, which was Topo Chico, lime and sotol and I had the featured drink which had rose, hibiscus, egg whites and sotol. Both were good and the food truck on premises was delicious. The vibe of the place is relaxed with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We learned about the process of fermenting and distilling the sotol plant and how the liquor, which is similar to tequila, is aged and bottled. Apparently, Desert Door is the only distiller of sotol in the country! There was live music on the patio, which just enhanced the atmosphere. We had a fun time trying something new. read more

Finally decided to take a day trip down to dripping springs and had to finally stop at Desert Door. To start, this place is designed so beautifully. I wish I could steal the décor and put it into my own home. Both the inside and out were so inviting, I don't know how someone could go and not spend hours enjoying the ambiance, food, and drinks. What I thought was so cool about Desert Door was that they educated you on what you were drinking and the history of Sotol. What I did not know, is that they are actually the only Sotol distillery in the US. We started off with the Sotol flight, and two drinks. Although we did enjoy tasting the Sotol by itself, it was a lot to start the afternoon off with! We also ordered the The Copperhead (my personal favorite of the day), the River Rita, and the Sotol'd Fashioned. I loved each drink but the copperhead was definitely the star of the day, which was a Sotol version of an espresso martini. They also have a food truck on site serving out very unique food. We ordered the tacos and vegan "queso" and both really surprised us by how unique and amazing it was. We loved this trip out to Desert Door, and will definitely be back. read more

We happened upon Desert Door as we were driving and saw a sign for the distillery so we decided to stop. There was a band playing outside and lots of outdoor seating. There were several people there with their dogs. We elected to sit inside. This was more of a community seating area with couches and some high tables with seats as well as some bench seating along a wall. We were told they offer yours but we arrived too late to take one so we can't speak on that. We were quickly greeted by a server who explained sotol to us and offered us a drink menu. The most popular is their frozen margarita, you have to try it. If you really just want to get a feel for what Sotol tastes like though, try ordering the flight first. My cousin got married in Austin and recommended places for the travelers to try. This was one of the places. I enjoy tequila in mixed drinks. His description was this is better than your favorite tequila...and he was right! It is more agave based sotol than true tequila, but I couldn't tell the difference! They also have one that taste more like whiskey, their oak-aged Texas sotol. They have a variety of custom drinks. You can sit inside or outside. We sat outside and they had a girl singing with her guitar to give a friendly, relaxing backyard atmosphere. This place would be a lot of fun with friends for afternoon cocktails or a night out. We ordered a 1oz taste of Oak-aged Texas Sotol, a River Rita, and Cowgirls Rising. Everyone said their drinks were strong and tasted delicious. I loved the River Rita and could have spent the day there drinking them. I tried the Cowgirls Rising, and it was a little too sweet for me. My friend who knows all the hot spots invited me here during the stricter COVID times. It's a heck of a drive but I was really impressed with how lovely this place is. Very Instagramable location with the truck outside and the silo. PARKING I went when it was pretty busy. I found parking but I did have to wait for like 5 minutes so cars could clear the road. It gets pretty tight once the parking spots are all full. It's all free. A lot of cars parked on the road. Just be careful crossing the road. FOOD When I was here they only had one food truck. The options were limited. The prices were a bit too high for the food options available. I didn't try it out. My friends ordered a few things and they felt the food was just ok. I'm not sure on the current food status here. AMBIANCE They only had outdoor seating when I was here because of COVID. I sat on the covered outdoor seating which was great since it was around summertime. It was HOT! Really cute tables, friendly/helpful staff, and live music! I don't remember his name but there was a gentleman playing guitar and singing. He was fantastic! DRINKS I ordered 3 drinks. The first two were the Comanchero and the third was The Copperhead. I'm glad I stopped there. They are strong! I'm giving it four stars because I felt like the size of the drinks didn't coincide with their prices. I hope I get to stop by here again. WOW. We were blown away by this distillery! We love going on distillery tours and this tour was top notch! Chandra did an amazing job of weaving the history of the liquor in Texas and Mexico and highlighting the differences between the distilling process. All of the cocktails were stunning. My husband likes brown liquor and I like clear liquor and it was wild how Sotol is able to find a balance between the two options. The distillery space is so comfortable, the indoor and outdoor seating was cozy and we greatly enjoyed the live music they offered outside. A July 4th week-end visit left us wanting to return. Desert Door is the only distillery in the U.S.A. making an alcoholic beverage from sotol plant. First a tasting of 1 oz of each flavor. Then cocktails with our favorite flavor. The food truck on the property has good food. Our "guide" in this experience was wait staff extraordinaire Haley. Friendly, knowledgeable conversationalist and server. All of this in a perfect venue.... Just as it should be...desert style with high quality design. There is A/C inside if you are wondering. Such a beautiful, can't-miss distillery in Texas Hill Country! We were absolutely shocked by how much we loved Sotol after trying it first as a standalone shot. And they sure know how to do a cocktail, too! I got the River Rita and it legit blew my mind. Sit and stay awhile, listen to the live music on the patio and if you need to cool down, the interior is a WHOLE mood. Be sure to visit their gift shop to buy an adorable handmade clay shotglass (SO CUTE) and a bottle of their famous Sotol. What a nice find! Our waitress was super friendly and had some lovely recommendations for us to try. We ended up trying the flight samples which was absolutely amazing. Not only were they beautifully presented but they tasted really good. I highly recommend this as your starter since it comes with 4 drinks for a really good price. We went on a Saturday evening and they had live music which was super fun. I really enjoyed the music, the people and the drinks. Wish we could've stayed longer and had a chance to try their food items but it was a quick stop for us. If I visit Texas again, I will definitely be coming back.
