Well, I returned to Utica and came back to Florentine Pastry Shop as promised. But you know what? All I had eyes for were their Pasticciotti. So I ordered two "pusties". One vanilla and one chocolate. They are magnificent. Simple and humble to be sure. But crisp and tender pastry stuffed with plenty of creamy, custardy, true-to-flavor filling. I can't stop thinking about them. And there is absolutely no reason to deprive a bakery of a full five stars based solely on their specialty item and noting else. The pusties are so good, I'm going to ignore the fact that I saw a full sheet of pre-filled cannoli in the case. Florentine Pastry Shop is a regional gem and a historical treasure. It's well worth the detour from the highway should you find yourself driving past Utica.
