It was quiet and there was only one other table with guests, probably because we were there around 4:00, shortly before the dinner hour. Quaint Indian restaurant in Downtown Derry. The coconut margarita was absolutely delicious and creamy. I'd never tried Rupee beer and was delighted to find that it has a good taste, kind of similar to a Blue Moon. My friend got the mango margarita and said he tasted like a basic puree. We got the spinach pakora and onion bhaji app. The onion bhaji was incredible. It was a fried semi-caramelized onion patty, which came with two chutneys. I love onions and look forward to trying this dish again. I got the chicken korma, a dish I've been interested in trying for some time now. I hope that all chicken kormas are like this one because the flavor was absolutely incredible! It's creamy cashew sauce with cubed chicken. I got mine at a medium spice level and it was perfect. The dish was really layered in its flavors with the cashew flavor not being over powering. The restaurant is a pretty nice size, with plenty of tables and room for many guests. The bar is small and the drinks took a while, but we came at the end of the night and I think there were only two people working the front. I've had takeout from here numerous times. The food is always terrific. The smell is unbelievable. You can smell it in the back parking lot and it just gets better when you get inside. Warning - I love curry, so if you don't, it's probably not for you. I'll be eating there soon. read more

To begin, I'm being generous with 3 stars ... The ambience was rather dark, in more ways than one, and even at that could not hide how dirty the (at one time) red indoor/outdoor carpet is. We ordered the Cauliflower 65 and Peshawari Naan for appetizers, and Chicken Tikka Masala and Coconut Shrimp Curry for entrees. I asked for lemon slices for the no-ice room temperature water, and then had to ask again after the server forgot. Considering how quiet the restaurant was, it took longer than expected to get the apps. The Cauliflower was good and the Naan Bread was very good. The server who brought the entrees was different from the one who took our orders, and she said nothing other than asking who each entree was for, and didn't ask if there was anything else we would like before leaving. The Masala was very good and the Curry was just OK. Halfway through the meal - after the server not checking up on us, I had to look around several times before finally flagging him down to refill the waters, at which time I asked for extra of the smallish/thin paper napkins but which never came; apparently he forgot that request, too. Considering the rather good reviews, which were the basis for going to Destination India, this was a very disappointing experience, and we won't be returning. There are two other restaurants in Salem that serve excellent Indian fare, provide excellent service, and have good ambience. read more

My father and I decided to try out this place based on the high review scores. Upon entering, the place seemed very nice with some soft Indian music playing in the background. There weren't very many customers at all in the place, in the early afternoon. So, we were able to pick anywhere we wanted to sit. Pretty typical menu and selections for both carnivores and vegetarians. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and an onion kulcha. My father ordered the bindhi masala and a butter naan. After we ordered, I assumed that they would bring us some popadoms with chutney. But, to my surprise, they didn't bring us anything. This is the first Indian restaurant I have ever been to, that doesn't give that to their customers. It's like going to a Mexican restaurant and not getting chips and salsa lol So, after about 20 minutes, the food arrived. It was fresh and I could tell that they use good quality ingredients. The rice was just plain basmati rice and nothing special. The onion kulcha looks very nice, but it was a lot thinner than I'm used to, and really didn't have any taste at all. I felt like I was just eating an overpriced naan. The same theme translated into the food. Though very fresh, hot, and quality ingredients... it had absolutely zero flavor, whatsoever. I am thinking that the chef is allergic to salt. I also ordered it medium spiced, and it was below mild. Additionally, it was freaking loaded with heavy cream! Chicken tikka masala is supposed to be a tomato-based dish. If you can taste anything that resembles the flavor of tomatoes in that dish, your taste buds deserve an academy award. If you would've blindfolded me, I would have thought you were literally feeding me cubed chicken with yogurt or something. If you go there, I would also order it hot as hell, because it's bad enough the food had no flavor, but to be that incredibly mild spiced, at an Indian restaurant, was kind of disappointing. My father said his bindhi masala was also so very bland. He didn't really eat much of his at all, and decided to ask for a box to bring it home. He said he's gonna try to spice it up and add some flavor to it at home, instead of eating something bland for the next 30 minutes at the restaurant. I would've done the same thing, but I didn't eat breakfast, because I was expecting this food to be off the hook, based on the high ratings on here and just ate it as-is. Anyway, the place is nice, they do use good quality ingredients, and the servers are nice. The food (or at least these two dishes and onion kulcha we ordered) is unfortunately just extremely bland and lackluster. And definitely don't expect any complementary accoutrements like raita or popadoms. Other than a glass of water and one napkin, don't expect anything else, but your good humor. It was a nice day to drive out to Derry, but I definitely won't ever be returning here. There are SO much better in Indian restaurants in Manchester and Concord. read more

We stopped in for lunch today. This place is a 30 minute drive from our home, but were curious as to how they managed to average five stars for 65 ratings on Yelp. The restaurant is located in an older downtown building in Derry. For the restaurant facilities itself, we would rate as a four. It was clean but clearly quite old and used. We were immediately greeted and shown to our table. Our waiter was nice and helped is clarify some things on the menu. We both ordered mango lassis, then the Malai Kafta and Chicken Saag. It took around 15-20 minutes to get out food. That indicated it was being cooked rather than just reheated in a microwave. Our lassis were very good. You could taste the mango and the yogurt made them smooth. Our dishes likewise were very good. They arrived spicy hot as we ordered and thermally hot since they put the serving dishes in the oven. My wife and I both agreed that the food was a five. My wife is not Indian. However, she cooks great Indian food. We had lamb saag for dinner the night before. It's hard to fool her with Indian food. My husband and I visited Destination India for dinner on a Tuesday night. The restaurant wasn't very busy, and we were seated immediately. We started with the Spinach Pakora and Onion Bhaji. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but the dish arrived as a spinach and onion fritter, served with a variety of chutneys. Our server helpfully explained the different chutneys, which enhanced our understanding of the flavors. While it was an interesting dish, I wouldn't order it again. For the main course, I had the Mango Chicken, and my husband chose the Lamb Curry (medium spice), accompanied by a side of garlic naan. The food was absolutely outstanding--some of the best Indian cuisine I've had. The flavors were rich and well-balanced, and the naan was the perfect complement. The service was attentive, and while the restaurant's ambiance was average, the incredible food more than made up for it. Overall, it was a fantastic meal, and we'll definitely be back! read more

My husband and I frequently try different Indian restaurants because we absolutely love the food. I've tried a lot of dishes, but the palak paneer (at both Derry and Hampton locations) is my favorite Indian dish that I've ever tried. The food here, in my opinion, far surpasses any competition in Manchester/Nashua/etc. I recently tried food at the Hampton location to see how it compares, and they are very comparable. The food was excellent. We had the paneer pakora to start, and it was done differently than most places do - a more flavorful batter. The portion was generous. The curries were all delicious. Excellent experience! Went with my mom and daughter. Sumid was our waiter and bartender. He's the absolute best bartender there is! He made the most delicious drinks I have EVER had.... EVER! He was super friendly and walked us through the menu as well as talked Indian culture with us (we are of Indian decent as well but didn't know much so we loved speaking with him). He's an absolute delight! The food was so incredibly delicious! We started with the vegetable samosas and coconut and mango margaritas. For dinner we tried butter naan, chicken korma and chicken tiki masala. SO GOOD!!!! We cannot wait to go back! This will be our new regular spot. It's such a gem of a resturant. Place was clean with a giant bar. We loved sitting my the window for natural light and watching people walk their dogs outside. Back in November when we ordered take out for the first time (Thanksgiving day) I would have given them five stars, without hesitation. Everything was warm, fresh, and delicious. The Aloo Ghobi Mater was exceptional that day and my husband loved his Vindaloo and appetizers. Ordered online Saturday. First, the "cashier" changed my tip when I placed the order from 15% to 22%. I realized this when I got the receipt via email...after I paid. I didn't call because I would've felt bad squabbling over 7%, but I wasn't happy about it. 55 minute wait time per the receipt, no biggie. We are 30 minutes away and were there at the 50 minute mark, checked in and was told it would be another 10-20 minutes. Went for a short drive and came back. My husband saw three bags sitting there and said "I think those might be mine." The person behind the counter told him only two of them were. He started to walk away, with doubt, because we ordered a lot of food. As he reached the door, the guy yelled after him that it was indeed our food. He would have left our entrées there. We out the food in an insulated bag for the drive back. Got home. The appetizers (Samosas and Paneer) were cold and soggy and clearly had been sitting awhile. My Aloo Ghobi was supposed to be mild and was quite spicy compared to the first time I had it. I could not eat it all, disappointing. I ordered mild both times, I can do flavorful, but not spicy. Two of the four naan were blackened. I'm happy that my kids enjoyed their vindaloo and tikka masala, but overall, I did not feel like our meal was worth the $145+ we paid. They seem to be inconsistent when they're busy. We will try them again, maybe on a less busy weeknight, because our first experience was good, and will hope it was one bad night. read more
