    Menu, Biryani

Usually, when I pass an Indian restaurant, it's the usual place with chicken tikka masala, some curries and tandoor proteins and biryani. Desi Chowrastha is not that. If you're looking to expand out of the typical Indian fare found in America (read: North Indian), this place is for you. Now, the establishment does have curry. It also has a whole list of biryani, idlli and dosas, desserts, appetizers, and Indian style street snacks / chaat. Excited for my dinner, I ordered the chicken fry biryani ($16.99) and sev puri ($7.49). I took half of the biryani home as leftovers - a testament to their generous portions. The Sev Puri contained crispy fried flour discs and spiced potato topped with condiments. A whole constellation of flavors managed to reside here - spicy, sweet, tangy, savory, salty, crunchy - all without feeling overpowering or heavy. It proved quite refreshing. The biryani was packed with flavor, Not a single bite of rice seemed unseasoned. Bay leaves and dried chili peppers poked out of the rice. This makes biryani from other places taste downright bland. Additionally, spicy here means properly spicy. I needed a stack of napkins. It also came with a side of raw onions and lime wedge, raita, and biryani gravy/sauce. Both the gravy and biryani itself tasted extra earthy, similar (in my mind at least) to cardamom. The chicken itself seemed to have been both marinated and fried. The outer skin/crust was soaked with flavor. Previously, I had struggled to find decent Indian food in Boston, after having become accustomed to my Bay Area Indian coworkers' favorite spots (and Vik's Chaat in West Berkeley). Thankfully, I can come here now.

Service is FAST! Looks very clean, and fresh! The seating is very close together but also a bit spacious? The food portions are BIG and so worth the money. Everything tasted fresh and full of flavors and seasonings. Forks, plates and water is all accessible and you can grab it on your own.

I had to be in Nashua yesterday and was looking for somewhere quick with good food. Boy did this place exceed expectations! I went in knowing this was counter service so I was expecting pretty basic, but the interior was larger, brighter, and a lot more fun than I expected. A very modern look with bright walls, a clean space and wooden tables. I was eating alone and just reading the walls was entertainment. Only a few of the many food items they serve are actually out visible at the counter - a few snack things, sodas, and things like mango lassi and chickoo shake in a cold case. Everything else you order and they call your name when ready - but it is fast! I started with the chickoo shake and it was awesome. Kind of vaguely pear like but less-fruity a flavor if that makes sense. One description I read said "malty"...maybe. Very good anyway. I had originally forgotten to get a drink and a very helpful woman behind the counter suggested the shake and I was happy with the choice. I saw they also have Thums Up in with the sodas, which would normally be something I'd jump at, but I will get the chickoo shake again next time. The menu overwhelmed me as it was a lot more than I expected and spread across several those modern digital screens behind the counter. I really wanted idli though, which I found under the "Tiffins" section as "Sambar idly". It looks like you can get it in other combos. The one I got came with both sambar and chutney and was awesome. This is a South Indian place so there are also dosa of course, but there are a ton of options with both light snacks and lunches or the full range of heavier dinner type dishes available and a range of chaat type stuff. What I got was vegetarian, but there's a ton of non-veg options, including quite a lot of goat dishes. I panicked a bit from all the choices and also ordered a chana masala which is kind of my stand-by. I had waaaaaayyy too much stuff and ended up bringing most of the chana masala home. The idli dish on its own was a full and very satisfying meal, especially with the chickoo shake. Parking is easy as this is in a strip mall. My only reservation at all is that the silverware and dishes are all disposable. It would be nice to have reusable silverware and glasses available when eating in.

Loved their food. The pani puri was authentic and tasted just like the street style. We loved mutton biryani the most it was so flavorful.

Pretty cool South Indian Street food restaurant spot. This is a great place when you're not looking for a traditional super restaurant-ey vibe, but also looking for something in the middle that's not purely takeout. They got really good food. That's mainly in the realm of South Indian style from typical hits such as chicken 65 to papdi chaat. The service here was really good and fast. Definitely recommend checking out this place at least once, and you might be coming back again and again.

Food was amazing here wow! Everything came out fast as well and the staff was super helpful. This is a cafe and the parking isn't bad when it's not super busy. We came here on a sat afternoon and it did get packed. I highly recommend the dragon cauliflower, chicken 62, the garlic naan, and the chai drinks. I am definitely coming back.

Food was great! Mince sauce is really good and just the right spice. The Tika masala, irani chai, and masala chai are totally worth getting! Highly recommend this place so nice to see more true Indian food locations here in Nashua. Service was great and the ambiance is very relaxed. They even provide free water to help with the spiciness. Will definitely be back!!!

Place is legit. Great prices and the recipes are amazing. This is the freshest tasting Indian food I've had north of Boston. Convenient cafe style counter ordering with open seating. Bright and vibrant atmosphere. Will make this a regular stop.

There are a lot of Indian patrons at this restaurant, and that tends to bode well for the food. The menu is quite extensive and there aren't any descriptions or explanations (Google is your friend). My girlfriend liked the items we got (Dragon Cauliflower, Chicken 65, Tikka Frankie), but I found them underwhelming; not bad but certainly on the blander side of Indian food. While I did observe a group of guys eating curry with their hands (I get it, it's their culture...) right at the front counter, at least the employee that was serving them from a large pot was using a ladle to scoop into their bowls. The restaurant interior is quite clean and the staff are very nice. The restaurant smells amazing as soon as you walk in and all the other glowing reviews definitely make me feel like I've yet find their best so I will definitely return to try more of their large menu.

Desi Chowrastha opened in the former Maza space at Webster Square in South Nashua. This order at the counter place serves up mainly Indian fare and Indo -Chinese dishes, vegetarian and non-vegetarian options including dosas, street sandwiches, breads, wok noodle & rice dishes, biryani, chaats, curry dishes, masala, appetizers, juices, lassis, shakes, Coke & Pepsi drinks, and Indian & fusion desserts. There is table and high top table seating here with TVs on the painted brick walls and Indian music playing over the speakers. I stopped by just after 5pm and the place seemed busy during their soft opening. I was told that they were closed briefly, but they would start serving food again at 5:30. I ordered my food ahead of time at the register for a Hakka Noodles with Chicken ($14.99 plus tax) and Samosas ($3.49 plus tax), $20.05 with tax. I paid $20.25 cash and the guy shut the drawer, 20 cents change please? I took a seat and about 3 minutes later he comes up to me and tells me that they don't have samosas and if I want something else. I ask to get Onion & Spinach Pakoras instead, but it's $6.99 plus tax and I ended up paying the difference of $3.79 with tax and I get my 20 cents back too after the guy looks at the shiny quarter I gave him 5 minutes before. I will let this slide since they are new. Anyways, the Pakoras are ready in 10 minutes and noodles in 15 minutes. The food here was cooked fresh and hot and tasted very spicy. The fried Pakoras were firm and coated in a slightly salty batter with a spicy green dipping sauce provided. The Hakka Noodles which I ordered mild still were spicy tasting which had a mix of soft noodles, egg, garlic, chopped vegetables and tender pieces of chicken. Sriracha sauce was provided just in case I wanted more spicy. There is also self serve tap water in the dining area. Overall, the food was fresh and spicy. Hopefully they have samosas next time, which would order with a dosa.

This is their first New England location with other North American locations in South Brunswick Twp NJ, Schaumburg IL, Hamilton ON and Kitchener ON. This casual vegetarian Indian/Indo Chinese restaurant offers full service dining with ample table seating and takeout. The dining room has artful murals on two walls and a flatscreen TV overhangs. The menu offerings include a variety of chats, Indian curries, dal, bhaji pav, rice & noodle dishes, sandwiches, paninis, dosas, kulches, nanns, appetizers, desi style pizzas (6"), desserts, shakes, lassis, and cold sodas. The prices are moderate high. I stopped by Choice Indian Restaurant for dinner takeout very recently. I ordered the Veg Makhanwala ($17.99 plus tax) and a Bhakhri Pizza ($11.99 plus tax), which was all set and bagged to go in about 10 minutes. I did not order basmati rice which would've been a $4.99 extra charge. Most independent Indian & Thai restaurants in the area include rice with their curries. I headed back to the house to enjoy my food. I quick boiled some macaroni (instead of rice) to go with the Veg Makhanwala. This curry dish had a mix of vegetables including peas, green beans, cauliflower, onions, bell pepper, tomatoes, and spices in a medium spicy creamy tomato sauce. This curry dish was pretty good over macaroni pasta. The Bhakhri Pizza was a 6" round hard crispy crust topped with a sweet & spicy tomato sauce, peppers, onion, and shredded cheese. This Indian pizza was a solid good appetizer with my spicy curry dish. Overall, the food I ordered was pretty good and prepared to my preference of mild-medium spice level. I would stop back in again to try the sandwiches and Manchurian noodle dishes.

But finally I did and boy am I happy. Very much a family affair - husband and wife who share maitre'd and server responsibilities. And other relatives in the kitchen cooking up a storm. What first grabbed my attention were the huge number of dosas they offer. Seeing any dosa on a menu at all is a rarity and so to see the wide variety they feature was amazing. I opted for the Andhra Kara Masala and it was excellent. The dosa itself crispy and warm and the condiments beautifully integrated. We opted for the mixed veggie pakoras as an appetizer on the recommendation of the owner and they were served warm and crispy. The batter was light - nothing like the thick sludge that usually adorns the deep fried nuggets of vegetable delight. The accompanying tamarind sauce was sweet and clean and the mint-cilantro suitably refreshing. Lovey got garlic naan and saag paneer. Smooth and creamy, the saag was exactly as hoped for and the garlic naan was chewy, warm and toothsome. Dessert was carrot halwa. Hard to believe carrots make such an excellent warm dessert but they do. Richly satisfying with just the right touch of sweetness. We look forward to returning and sampling the rest of the menu!
