I was too excited. The receptionist comforted us. We had the jitters even though we are both pretty heavily pierced and tattooed. There were 4 young ladies ahead of her for piercings, but the wait was no longer than 15-20 minutes. The piercing took 5 minutes, the environment was clean and sanitary. I've been wanting to get another tattoo for quite some time. If you have tattoos and love them... You internally, anxiously await for the precise moment that you know it's TIME. If you've never had one but have been researching images, thinking of ideas to make it your own... they can help guide you. I called and was fit in the same day. No children allowed so that was a bummer but understandable. I already drove 45 mins there. So after another 45 to the sitter and 45 back again... I finally got in the chair. Down to earth wonderful people, I enjoyed the vibe and fun. I needed it. I got my original piece, and decided to do the quick extra one. This happened a few years ago but I will never forget. Let's hope they've gotten a new piercer since then. I brought my friends in on a Wenesday for their special at the time $15. We were all freshman trying to get cheap piercings. When we got to the back homeboy asked what we wanted. I proceeded to explain that I wanted a nipple piercing but I wanted it to be horizontal instead of following the natural slant of my nipple. When I tell you he looked me dead in my face and said "do I go to your job and tell you what to do?". Sir, first of all I'm a gardener. You don't... but yes, I do hear my clients out. You're actually creating an open wound on my body, do I not get any say in that? I actually didn't know how to respond I was livid. I should have left but I didn't want to ruin the experience for my friends. I used the anger to numb the pain. It's really uncomfortable to be in such an intimate situation with a salty childish grown man. That was the slowest piercing to heal out of the 7 that I have. And what absolute audacity to be so rude and arrogant. I've never been back. Do not recommend if that's how they run their business. read more

In February 2023, I contacted Detroit Ink Spot tattoo salon to book an appointment with artist Jason Phillips, whom I had seen on Instagram and considered professional. We discussed the design and agreed on a $1050 price for approximately 7 hours of work. I paid a $200 deposit on February 21, 2023, and emailed Jason the design we discussed. After a week with no response, I contacted the salon, and they assured me there was still time before my appointment on March 18. However, Jason only sent me draft sketches, not the complete design, less than 12 hours before the appointment. On the day of the appointment, I received an email at 11 am stating that Jason had an emergency and needed to reschedule. We rescheduled for March 20. Unfortunately, the design still wasn't ready on March 20, and Jason seemed rushed during the session. There were noticeable differences in quality between the lower and upper parts of the tattoo. Jason assured me he would fix everything later, including adding color. After the first appointment, I discovered more issues with the tattoo. On the second appointment, Jason fixed some issues but said we needed another session for color. We also discussed ideas for my other arm. During the healing process, I noticed that he had made more mistakes. We agreed on a price per hour and discussed deadlines for the next appointment. However, when I inquired about the sketches for the second tattoo, Jason only sent them late at night before our appointment. I decided to reschedule due to the delays and unaddressed issues. Jason didn't reply, but the salon's manager said they didn't want to work with me anymore and would keep half of my deposit. I am extremely dissatisfied with this salon and would not recommend it. My experience with Detroit Ink Spot has been very disheartening and I make it a point to support our black shops. I went into the shop in October to get a double nostril piercing. I called ahead to be sure the shop was open given I was arriving 45 minutes to closing. Once I arrived there wasn't anyone at the front counter to greet my boyfriend and I. So I took it upon myself to begin reading the piercing contract. We were waiting for a good 5 or 6 minutes until my boyfriend took it upon himself to peek around to the back and get someones attention. We were finally able to get someone to perform my piercing. We were not greeted or introduced to our piercing artist. Upon later research we discovered his name is Piercing Dagwood. Once we were able to finalize the location of my nose piercings, he began to pierce with no warning, no countdown, no additional jewelry information (gauge size, material, etc...). Once the piercing was complete, he was about to send us on our way , but luckily I was able to remember to request aftercare instructions. After requesting that information he just told me to use Bactine. Over the course of the 6-8 weeks Dagwood told me it would take to heal, I was following the given "instructions" diligently, however, I began to develop bumps on both nostril piercings on the inside and outside. I was reluctant to return to Detroit Ink Spot because my experience was disappointing. I decided to visit a nearby piercing & tattoo parlor instead. I was then informed that there were several things wrong with my piercings. My ring was too short, incorrect piercing angle, the Bactine is not suppose to be used for piercing wounds, AND the ring shape was designated for the opposite nostril. This caused my ring to repeatedly spin in the piercing sight. Now I have to remove BOTH piercings and get my nose re-pierced. This wasted my time and money. So that was just my first issue at the location. After my consultation at the second shop, I wanted to contact Detroit Ink spot to let them know of my bad experience and possibly get a refund. During this call I was transferred three times after requesting to speak with the manager. I was put on hold twice while explaining my concerns and was not notified that I was being put on hold. The employees attempted to scapegoat me and ask why I did not return with my concerns and I explained to them my poor service from the initial visit. Much of the call was them trying to make excuses for why they cant give me a refund instead of acknowledging their mistakes and terrible service. I was not given and apology, I was not given a refund, and so I will NOT be giving them my money ever again. All in all this was not to get money back or to shame the institution. I feel that time and time again we as a black community do not hold our businesses accountable for their lack of appropriate service. I hope this is a learning experience for them going forward and they make the proper adjustments so that all patrons in the future can have a more pleasant experience than the one I received. read more

Been meaning to get a tattoo for FOREVA, but as an artist myself, I have an extreme appreciation for real art and an extreme apprehension of trusting someone to permanently execute their skills on me. Despite living in arguably one of the tattoo capitals of the world (Atlanta), Jason at Detroit Inkspot is the ONLY tattoo artist I entrusted to do my ink! I'm familiar with Jason's work as an accomplished painter, and I presented an idea and a rough sketch of an Adinkra symbol, but wanted him to add his own vision and embellishment. I got a stunning black and grey piece that incorporated my vision but was elevated to art through Jason's skill. The establishment itself is in an eclectic building and I got a tour of all of the artists area. I was glad each artist has their own room, as I thought I would be in a big area with a million people and their energy, but it's just you and Jason and whatever guests wusses like me need to accompany me! My piece was very affordable (maybe compared to high-priced ATL) and I got great instructions on how to care for and maintain my new body art. To a man, everyone who's seen my piece asks "Where did you get it done?" Not a day goes by that I don't look at my piece (which I got to commemorate the loss of a loved one) and don't still this "this is beautiful." i came here to get my conch pierced and the piercing job wasn't bad but the whole experience was. when i went in the room my piercer was very quiet. i never chose any jewelry, he didn't explain what he was doing, he didn't even show me the jewelry that he chose! what he put in my conch was a regular lobe stud that would turn my ears green. explains why the all piercings are so cheap. i ended up spending more money at a better shop (iconic tattoo body piercing, best shop to go to) to change out my jewelry to the right kind the day after. i would never recommend this place to anyone. read more
