Menu (June 2023)

Deutscher Imbiss (DI) was parked at Big Ugly Brewing last week and I was so excited to try as they have been on my food truck hit list for awhile. Heidelberg was our first duty station so I was delighted to hear that the owner of the truck was from there too. The pictures of Heidelberg on the back wall of the trailer brought back fond memories of our time there..and the food! DI has a limited menu that fits on one page. This is GREAT for people like me who tends to get order decision paralysis. Krazy Trompos was the other food truck of the night (another one on my hit list), so I wanted to order from both. What jumped out at me first at DI were some of the classics we used to enjoy. - Noms - Schnitzel bites - this was the perfect little boat filled with delicious pieces of moist (yeah, I said it!) chicken breaded lightly, fried to golden perfection. It is served chopped up in small, bite-sized pieces with a wooden pick and a lemon wedge. I actually had to go back to the trailer and order another one because the first boat was meant for my youngest who scoffed it down. Currywurst - This also turned out to be a great choice. It was served sliced, coated with their sweet ketchup/curry sauce with pommes frites (fries). The sauce is sweet, but super tasty with the curry flavor. The fries were also delish, fried with some sort of starch, because it has that uneven texture, that is crispy, but with a slight crunch, do you know what I mean? I LOVE this kind of fry! Kase spaetzle - I didn't order this, but my sister-in-law did. I took a quick bite, but the only issue is that I tried it a long time after they had ordered it, and it has been sitting there for awhile, when it was cold. The sauce had soaked in and the spatzle had hardened slightly. However, I would definitely order this next time and try it when it is hot. Overall, the portions are great and the pricing is very affordable and the quality is great! The items they offer is great quick intro to German fare and they have definitely figured out the quick turnaround. The items were fresh, yet, came out super quick! I didn't even have to step away and come back to pick up the food. Can't wait 'til we meet again, Deutscher Imbiss! Stay safe, Friends!

Curry Fries, Spaetzle, Currywurst with fries

Stumbled upon Deutscher Imbiss at the Christmas market at Maker's Craft Brewery today! I was ecstatic because this food truck has been on my to-try list and we just happened to stumble upon it. We tried much of their menu. Between three of us, we ordered the currywurst, the meatballs, an order of spaetzle, and the schnitzel bites. It was the perfect amount and everything was fantastic. Every single bite had us ooh-ing and ah-ing. We finished every bite without complaint and already want to go back! This is by far the best food truck I've visited in the area!

Bratwurst and Frikadelle with potato salad

This review is coming straight from a German girl (I'd tell you my maiden name if I didn't think there were some crazies lurking on the interwebs and, suffice it to say, I couldn't get MORE German). When I saw them on Farmhouse's food truck calendar, I was eager to try them out. I honestly cannot believe they've been in business as long as they have and I've never come across them. This food truck could earn 5 stars just for their speed alone - and it wasn't because our food had been holding. Everything was fresh and SO good! My husband had a brat - slathered in yellow mustard, grilled onions and sauerkraut while I opted for the Frikadelle beef patties with traditional potato salad. I've never had German potatoes that were this good. Hubs loved the brat and my beef was flavorful and didn't feel super heavy, which I think a lot of people assume German food to be. I so wish they had rotkohl (red cabbage) available as a side. Give me some of that and the potatoes and I'd follow this truck around like a groupie! Friendly faces, amazing, quick service and delicious German grub. 5 stars and then some for sure!

Caught up with theis awesome food truck at CoVa Brewing Company. Decided to order and bring it back home. Tasty bites of everything. We got the traditional bratwurst with sauerkraut and onions (spicy brown mustard from home). Currywurst which is brat with curry ketchup (doesn't taste like indian spices) and pommes frites. I actually liked it, I was worried. Frikadelle (beef & pork meatballs) with german potato salad (with cucumber, spring onions and mustardy vinaigrette. Veggie wedges are made of carrots, peas, broccoli and spinach and pressed into one patty with potato salad. We also got the schnitzel bites. We even got a couple of Mezzo mix, cock and orange mixed together. We enjoyed all the food we sampled. If you want to try something different, they won't disappoint. Check them out in Facebook or their website for the schedule.

This food truck is amazing.

I would strongly recommend the bratwurst and can't wait to try the curry bratwurst. But everything on the menu looked great.

Deutscher Imbiss was set up at Green Flash Brewery today. I tried the Kässe Spätzle for the first time ever. I don't know how it's suppose to taste as I've never had it, but I can't imagine how it could taste better it was EXCELLENT, yummy and filling. The owners' Matthias (from Germany) and Anna (from Sweden) were friendly and personable. Can't wait to try some of their other creations, but definitely having the spätzle again!

We had this for a late lunch/early dinner today, and it was pretty good. My husband had dinner here a little earlier in the week and brought home some surprise Currywurst and fries for me, so we decided to track down the truck and go again together today! The owners are very nice and friendly for sure. So lemme first discuss the Currywurst and fries: I loved the curry ketchup and fries! They were savory and kind of cinnamon-y. They were just fun and a nice twist on something familiar!I wanted to love the actual wurst itself, but I didn't. To be honest, it tasted a little gamey to me. But I also have been starting to lose my taste for sausage in general recently, so maybe you should just disregard my opinion on the wurst. Today my husband and I each got Käse Spätzle and shared an order of Schnitzel bites and an order of Frikadelle. The Käse Spätzle was pretty tasty--the potato bits are similar to gnocchi and they come with sweet grilled onions, bits of bacon, and a little bit of cheese. Someone else mentioned in their review that the Spätzle was just a little on the bland side--I'd have to agree with that. However, I have been lucky enough to have actual Käse Spätzle in Germany before, and what I had tonight was very similar. The Schnitzel bites were good, but I really don't have much else to say about them. Again, it was accurate to the Schnitzel I've had in Germany before, which is to say that it is reminiscent of a chicken patty. Good, but not ground-breaking. I did enjoy the Frikadelle a lot! They're like little meatballs, but what makes these ones distinct from your typical meatball is the freshness of the herbs inside of them. It almost tasted like there was fresh mint inside of them? I'm not sure what it was, but I loved it! The potato salad came on the side with the Frikadelle. It was classic German potato salad, which is more vinegar-based. The potato salad was very good and chock-full of more fresh herbs. It was a good salad, but again, like everything else, it's very authentic, so after a while I kinda got tired of it cuz I don't *love* German-style potato salad; the vinegar starts to make my throat feel scratchy. SO: Authenticity-wise, this food truck is the real deal. I just personally kinda think German food is pre-disposed to be a little bland.

Coelacanth Brewery

I ran across this food /truck trailer at Coleacanth Brewery a few weeks ago. My German friend was excited to try them. They delivered authentic fare and over the top service. My experience with ethnic food is limited and German food notta. So I relied on recommendations. The couple running the business are so super friendly and smiled the whole time. They recommended the Kase Spätzle, a noodle dish and Schnitzel Bites. I enjoyed my food over a brew with several friends who all thought it was great and authentic German. I thought it good, not great. Nothing wrong, just my taste. The Kase Spätzle seemed too bland for me. I enjoyed the Schnitzel bites more, however once cold not so much. They run the brewery circuit, so chances are you will see them. They have a trailer, so it's really not a truck. They have other items which I would like to try on my next visit. I would recommend them based off of friends strong comments of its authenticity.

Kase Spatzle, German Potato Salad
Dawn B.

On a recommendation, we tracked down this food truck at Commonwealth Brewing Company. The food was cooked fresh, tasted great and customer service was terrific. The spatzle was amazing! Macaroni and cheese with bacon and onions... yes please! The potato salad was a delicious side dish as well. We will continue to watch where this food truck goes and will happily order again in the future.

The food that comes out of this truck is phenomenal. My family and I basically ordered one of everything and we shared. The currywurst was by far my favorite, it had the perfect amount of curry in the ketchup. I don't have a bad thing to say about the food these wonderful people produce.

They have the truck listed under Virginia Beach, so I couldn't check in, unfortunately. They have been so conveniently placed outside of Tradition Brewing Company by City Center, which is so conveniently down the street from me. BUT! I am sooo glad they have this food truck here at the moment. I was born and raised in Germany. (Military brat). So I missed the food a tremendous amount. The owners are so friendly, and I got to speak what little German I know and remember to them for a short while. The food is great. I wish they would open a restaurant because they have SO much potential. I would've liked jäger on my schnitzel bites, but there's only so much that can be done with food truck capabilities. I am still so in awe of what they do have and how well it encompasses the German culture. If you want a little taste of authentic Germany, take a bit of time to check this out for a bite! 10/10 recommend!!

At Green Flash Brewery enjoying some yummy Deutscher Imbiss

So this is my third visit to Deutscher Imbiss, Yes I dreamed all week about the Frikadelle because it was moist, loved the garlic in the ground pork and beef blend and the warm potato salad. What I believe really makes the food special is Deutscher Imbiss's own Anna and Matthias. You can tell they put a lot of love and care in each dish with a German flag too! Commonwealth Brewery is one of the renaissance man's favorite brewery, he was excited that I had wanted to go. Commonwealth Brewery has valet parking and it was backed up to the street because of a baby shower in progress there. The renaissance man ordered at Deutscher Imiss, while I looked at the beer menu trying to decide on what to order. They normally don't do flights on the weekends due to the volume of glasses they have to keep up with just to serve the beer flights on a rack so I took a gamble on a half pour of Wapatoolie because of the description of a tropical IPA. The renaissance man selected Aureole a pilsner, a crisp and refreshing beer. Instead of complimenting the food, the food made the Wapatoolie more bitter I was disappointed but the renaissance man told me to try it with the currywurst. OMG! Currywurst and a sip of Waptoolie (the pineapple and mango married with the sauce, curry power on the bratwurst) -- Food Sex -(When both drink and food bring the experience of dining to another level) Yes I went back and ordered my own currywurst! I was in food heaven on a rainy day made a happy day for me! I was so excited about my find the couple sitting next to us asked us what we were eating and I explained and then they asked us to watch their stuff while they went and ordered! Great food is about sharing the love!

I ended up going with the Pick of the Liter American Lager, and it was exactly what I wanted: light, crisp, refreshing, and easy to drink. Nothing overcomplicated, just a really solid lager done right. The vibe is what really stands out here. I love the German-inspired atmosphere. It feels warm, welcoming, and relaxed without trying too hard. It's the kind of place where you can hang for a while, have a conversation, and not feel rushed. Add in the fact that there are dogs on the walls everywhere, and I was fully sold. As a dog lover, this was a huge win. Even though I didn't eat this time around, I was definitely eyeing the food coming out of the kitchen. The pizza in particular looked really good, and it's 100% the reason I'll be back soon. If the beer and service are any indication, I have a feeling the food is going to deliver too. This is a great spot whether you're a craft beer fan or just want a chill place to grab a drink!
