But the true star of the experience was my AMAZING waitress Amber! I'm meeting my friend at the airport to pick her up and it's her birthday. Her one request was to bring some kind of adult beverage to meet her after she flew across the country. I bought a bottle of prosecco to go and not only did Amber give plastic cups for me to take but gave me a bag of ice to make sure it was cold. She wisely said "No one wants warm prosecco". We are from the Carolina's. Our family came to Virginia Beach for a weekend getaway. As we searched the area for a German restaurant, we came the Bier Garden. Our server, Hailey, was fantastic!. Recently, one of my co-workers took a job in Georgia. To celebrate his last day, we went here for lunch. I used to pass by this place on the way home from work in the past, but never had a moment to try them out until now. Would this first time go off without a hitch? All of us got seated in separate tables. It is a small place with tables and some pool tables. They also have an outside patio. It is outdated, but a very good neighborhood spot. We all submitted orders days before since our party was just under 20 people. I ordered the Reuben sandwich with bier battered fries. It was very good and delicious. It had enough protein along with fries to keep yours truly full for the rest of the afternoon. Everyone else liked their selection and the waitresses tended to each one of us. Great service indeed. A staple that you have to go to once even if you don't like German food or beer. I am that person so I had low expectations. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. You walk in through an outdoor patio that feels very much like you are in Germany. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the air conditioning and beer and wine. We ordered a pretzel...well because...you have to. It looked very homemade and the mustard was amazing! The menu obviously was primarily german food but there were other options for someone like me. Turkey, salads, etc. I walked around and loved the building. Very old and charming. Maybe could use some touch ups but definitely not the main stream you see everywhere else. I've been going here for a very, very long time. I've seen quite a few servers, beers, and changes come and go. This might be my first 'less than 5' rating. Lately, I can't put my finger on it, but things have been on the slow downslope. The beers are still a staple, but the changes with the beer market haven't been in the same swing. You can tell that between the menu and the beers, there hasn't been much investment in updating their offerings. I'm ok with this, mainly because now I know what to usually expect when I arrive. The only downside is that the the quality of things we used to get has been diminishing. It's not "oh this place is horrible" bad... just noticeably 'different'. Unfortunately this my first time going to a German restaurant, maybe my last. A friend and me were in the area for the farmers market and decided to give this place a try. At first I thought I would try brunch, but I'm a French toast, waffle or pancake girl and that was available on the brunch menu. So shift gears I did try some of the traditional items on the menu. The restaurant did not appear ( I say appear lightly) because we weee seated outside, so who knows how busy inside was. But outside it wasn't busy. But the wait time for the simplest items was ridiculously long. My friend ordered a pretzel which she thought would be warm, but that was not the case. I ordered a side of spatzle and asked for gravy on the side well they put the gravy on the noodles we waited over 45 minutes and the spatzle was cold. I also ordered a side or potatoes they had a German name for them basically seasoned sliced potatoes fried. But they were cold and flavorless. Our waiter gave as a nice warning that we might want to order our food if we we're ordering main dishes right away because the kitchen is running about 45 minutes a ticket. We listened typically we wait till after we ate most of our appetizers. Moving on to our main meals I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken, with mustard vinaigrette on the side, because I was not impressed with the appetizers. The chicken looked good but was again cold so I asked the server if the chicken was fresh cooked and I was informed it was. Let's talk about the romaine lettuce as I'm looking at my salad and cutting it up I notice lots of dirt on my lettuce. I informed our server that the lettuce hasn't been washed. Too me that is UNACCEPTABLE! The waiter snatched the bowl so fast I wasn't even able to snap a photo. Not to mention there wasn't any croutons on my salad. My friend ordered a Reuben sandwich with a Caesar salad in the side. She didn't eat her salad after the situation with my salad. She did say that the Reuben was very good. Debating on whether or not to try a dessert I decided to try I was tossed between the hazelnut torte and the chocolate praline crunch which both sounded good. I asked our server what they recommend he informed me that the hazelnut torte is gluten feee, and SUGAR-FREE which is a hard pass for me, I like all my sugar lol. So the chocolate cake with praline crunch it is. I had high expectations for this which failed miserably. I did not see or taste praline crunch at all the chocolate cake was very, I mean very dry. There was lots of whip cream even in the center, which had I known I would of passed. I'm not a fan of whip cream and it didn't say that in the description that there's whip cream in the center of the cake. Just to note Gordon Ramsay would rip this place apart just on the serve ware alone. When plates, bowls, and cups have any chips they need to be removed from the service line. Of course we had bowls, and plates with chips. The other thing that's a pet peeve PRESENTATION all dishes should look presentable I should not see grease or dipping of anything on white bowls and plates, you should look at them before serving them if you spill on the sides you should wipe it up. A little care goes a long way. I will say our server was very nice and super friendly. He did remove most of my items from my bill due to the issues except the potatoes. Side note he offered to give me the dessert due to all the issues and wait time for our food, so I did not inform him about the issues with the cake. Such a cool spot, especially if you have the opportunity to sit outside. The greenery is gorgeous. Inside, you can definitely feel the German-inspired ambience and all of the food smelled good, however we didn't try anything. We came on a Friday night and waited to ask to sit out on the patio, but staff members walked by us many times without helping, so we just wandered to the back and sat at the bar. Delicious German Food in the heart of downtown Portsmouth! For a quick review would return when in the area for some good beers and food! Read on for specifics! Parking: We found street parking just a half block away and I can see it being tough to find parking later on a Saturday evening. There might be a garage or a lot near by and next time will look into that! Ambiance/Inside: : It's not too large of a place and has a homey feel. Tables are a little close but nothing too bad. They do have a large covered patio with heaters with some larger tables There is also a small bar area with some tables as well. Food: We enjoyed the following: Free pretzel with Yelp check-in. Nice and soft and we added on the beer cheese. Schnitzel-oh so yummy!!! The pork was nicely cooked and crunchy. I had the mushroom sauce on the side and it was very flavorful. For my sides I had the spatzel salad and the pepper/onion vegetable that starts with an L. Everything was so delicious!!! Knock wurst-my husband enjoyed his sausage and his sides of sauerkraut and potato salad. I had a bite of everything and it was all good as well! Beer-My husband enjoyed the extensive beer menu (it's a binder) and the two German beers he had. Our waitress was nice and brought him a sample of the beer to first try. What a massive disappointment. I've been wanting to try The Bier Garden for so long because there's nothing like it in Hampton Roads, and I love German food! My guy and I traveled over 35 minutes solely to eat here. We arrived to a quiet restaurant only to stand and wait several minutes before even being addressed by the many staff that walked by. No hello, no "we'll be right with you". I felt maybe we were actually invisible. Finally a literal child came to show us to our seats. We sat again for far too long without ever being addressed. Tables sat after us received drinks and put their orders in while we were overlooked entirely. I finally decided we should just leave. We were confronted as we left and a waitress told us that she apologized, but there was confusion over whose table it was. But the restaurant was near empty? Many staff walked by and never even had the courtesy to acknowledge us? I literally lost money to come eat here only to leave hungry, disappointed, and hopeful that another German restaurant will open soon. This ain't it, for me. read more

We go long stretches forgetting about the Bier Garden, since it's across a toll tunnel, but we're always so excited when we think about it again! I remembered the food being good, but these last two visits really impressed me, with everything being SO delicious. It's hard for me to not get the Schnitzel with Mushroom Gravy, which is always perfectly fried and packed with flavor. The sauerkraut is also one of my favorites anywhere, served warm with bits of bacon. It's also probably horribly American of me to order the fries as a side, but their fries are some of my favorites anywhere, and pair excellently with their house made ranch. We love the beer selection, and our servers have always even helpful with recommendations when needed. The last few times we've gone around 5:30, and been seated quickly on their covered patio. On our most recent visit the wait times on a Sunday did creep up as we enjoyed our dinner, I think largely due to them being short staffed at the time. You can enjoy a beer while you wait, but be aware the bar might also be a bit backed up. Still with it in our opinion! Don't forget to check in on Yelp for a free pretzel! My experience here was a little strange. I'm not sure how to rate it. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. The server asked if we had a reservation. We didn't. She seemed confused about whether or not we could be seated. She walked around, talked to someone, then sat us. Most of the diners who were on the patio with us were gone within ten minutes and many others were sat after us, so I am not sure what the whole reservation thing was about. The service was slow and perfunctory. The waitress checked on us only once, long after the food was served. I had to flag her down after that to get dessert and the check. I didn't need a lot of attention and had an interesting companion, so it didn't impact anything. It's not fast food. That's okay. We weren't in a hurry. We ordered the Bier Garden Burger with Lescho for the side ($14), Reuben and beer battered fries ($11), one lemonade ($3), apfel strudel ($10), and gluten free hazelnut torte ($9). Everything was hot and tasty. My companion said the Lescho tasted like ratatouille. I got the fries because I never had beer battered fries. They don't taste any different from any other fries. I used to work in a German restaurant that was owned by a woman from Bavaria. The food is authentic. The hazelnut torte was not crazy sweet (good thing) and was very dry. I think it was old. So, it was a very mixed experience. Add to that that with the tip, I walked out $63 lighter. I ordered dessert from the table menu which didn't have the prices on it, but in no world does that add up to $63. Since it was taking so long to get anyone's attention, I paid it without complaint, but it doesn't make me want to return. read more

My family visited the Bier Garden this past weekend for a late lunch. I ordered the Jager Schnitnzel, which came out as a tough, dried up, plain piece of pork. No mushroom sauce. My wife had the Schweinhaxe which came out as dried-up and tough so hard she could barely cut with a steak knife. We lived in 3 different locations for 9 years in Germany. We met up with some family friends at the Bier Garden for lunch in Portsmouth earlier this year. What prompted us to choose this dining venue had origins in how our families met; our families were both living in Germany, belonging to the same support communities and social networks. Living in Deustchland, we developed our appreciation for German cuisine, and of course German beer. After leaving Germany, we would often reminisce on our time there and seek out German cuisine whenever practical. I wouldn't say that our taste for German cuisine is refined, however, we generally knew what we sought out in the dishes. With that being said, the Bier Garden had exceeded our expectations and delivered an authentic experience from start to finish. Beginning with the location, the venue sits on a main thoroughfare through the city of Portsmouth. There is street parking, but depending on your luck, it is a hit-or-miss. We had intentions of going to the Children's Museum of Virginia, so we opted to park at the public lot just behind the museum which sits several blocks away - not too bad of a walk. The Bier Garden almost sits almost inconspicuously amongst the other dining venues in the row, however the gated alleyway stands out above others. It was raining that day, so there was a decent sized puddle that we had to navigate through in order to get to the entrance. As we entered, it felt like we had stepped through a portal that brought us back to Bavaria. Aside from the outcrop dining area, much of the interior design was in similar fashion to what we experienced dining throughout Germany. Similarly, holding true to said economically-efficient design, the space was rather tight, but cozy. We brought in a stroller and had to set it away from where we sat. The hosts and waitresses were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They were quite accommodating and patient, especially with the number of children in our party. The menu was surprisingly diverse in selections and offerings. Similarly, the beer selections exceeded our expectations as well. We settled on some Dunkels, pairing them with schnitzels and spatzel, which turned out wonderfully. The potato salad was a bit-underwhelming (less vinegary than we liked), but overall the food and beverages hit the spot. We had dinner at The Bier Garden in honor of Volksfest (aka Oktoberfest) in Germany. I made a reservation for 8 and we had one more sow unexpectedly. When I arrived early to make sure we could get seated I was given a few options. The first option was outside in what looked to be a store room with some folding chairs and some outdoor chairs. This was not suitable, especially for the larger gentlemen apart of our group. I was then seated inside another area and was told we'd have the two larger tables and another side table we could move if needed. Sadly this wasn't the truth because they then sat another family on the other table my group was supposed to get. We ended up having 9 people scrunched together on one table meant for maybe 6 people. As for the food, it was okay. The large pretzel didn't have any salt or butter on it. I ordered the sausage platter (not really a platter) with German potato salad and sauerkraut. My one bockwurst (was supposed to have two) was okay, but was hard to eat without flatware. Finally we just got up to get our own since I server was too busy (seemed very overwhelmed).
