Everything about this place was great! The food was homemade and very authentic German food. We had the pirogies and a pretzel for apps. They were both great! For meals our party had the roulade, the schnitzel, the vegan schnitzel, and the chicken schnitzel. They were all delicious. Our server was wonderful and very accommodating. The restaurant was very quaint and simply decorated with pictures of Germany and other European places. I grew up with a first generation German Great-grandmother and the Bierock and the Schnitzel were on point. My compliments to the chef. We came during the week so the Biergarten was not open, due to limited staff, but all the biers were available. The place is small but can support a couple of large groups inside (6-8people). Awesome find while walking downtown area. Many good traditional food options and several daily specials. It's a small restaurant with a dozen tables and small bar area that was full. I opted to sit at the bar and the service was quick and friendly. I selected the Braised Pork Shoulder with a couple sides that was on special tonight. Great flavor! Several beers on tap and many bottled options. The Pilsner on tap was cold and refreshing. Definitely getting that again. I will be back soon. Make sure you stop by and give them a try. We've been wanting to check this place out for a while now and finally landed ourselves in their quaint and peaceful back patio area for dinner tonight. We shared the pierogis and the pretzel. The pierogis were a little more greasy than I would've liked. The pretzel was the clear winner in appetizers! Get the beer cheese for the pretzel (even if it's a bit extra). We both got schnitzel (one chicken, one pork). Both equally delicious. The horseradish potatoes were perfectly seasoned. I'd say the spaetzle could have gotten some extra love in the seasoning department but we had so much other good food I didn't feel left wanting more. Fantastic service with suggestions offered. I've always enjoyed the food and never had a problem with their service, but this was such a bad customer service practice, I had to say something. Planned to grab dinner on a holiday Sunday. Noted that the hours in yelp and in at least 2 different places on their website didn't match. Called to verify hours. No answer. Left a message. Not returned. Nothing on yelp, the outgoing phone message, or website about closure. Finally headed down there, figuring if all else failed, there are a lot of other places to go in the vicinity. Sure enough, there was a small sheet of paper posted on the door saying they were closed. All those options to communicate with your customers and just didn't bother?? My wife and I were visiting downtown Fredricksburg and decided to try this German restaurant for dinner. When we got there, we were the only guests and were wary that we had made a bad choice. My wife ordered the osso bucco and I ordered the Jager schnitzelz. We both had red cabbage as a side and I had the spaetzle as well. The food was fantastic. Think hearty German fare well prepared. I Had a schnitzel with both sauces on the side and they are an acquired taste but still tasty. The cucumber salad was very delicious! Came for the first time with my grandparents for dinner and we weren't expecting to love it as much as we did! This place has so much potential: great location, nice decor, great beer and wine selection, good service... The only disappointing for us was the food. We were so excited to try this place as we are big fans of Germany food & beer. We started our meal with Bavarian big pretzel and pan seared perogies. The pretzel was just OK and the cheese dip we ordered $2 extra was not what we expected... Cold and hard to dip, it was more of a spread. The perogies were good but was lukewarm, I prefer my hot food served hot. For entrees, I had their braised pork special came with horseradish mash and a side (I chose potato pancake) - just my luck that the pork was rancid and stunk... It was definitely spoiled and inedible. I had a taste of the horseradish mash which was good, but the potato pancake seen a little dense and gritty. I had to send my food back (trust me, I rarely do this). They were apologetic and replaced the entree with chicken schnitzel with spatzel and red cabbage. Now that was a yummy dish! The spatzel was chewy, buttery, and flavorful. The chicken cutlet was fried perfectly and the red cabbage was very delicious and tasted homemade. We also ordered the duck entree with Jager sauce, but the seasoning on the duck was a bit strong, not a fan, but the potato salad was good. We also had the apple strudel for dessert, but didn't really cared for it. Our food were hit-or-miss that's why I gave it 3 Stars. But if you are only coming for drinks, this would be a 4-star place. read more

Drove down from Manassas on a perfect Sunday morning to stroll the streets of historic Fredericksburg and stopped in here for lunch. Sat at their outdoor seating area and ordered draft beers and Jagar schnitzel for two. Selected red cabbage and spätzle for the sides and loved everything. This one has been on the list for awhile, so I came in wanting to love it. Rouladen usually is a special at most German Restaurants, so to find it on the regular menu is unusual, so I had to try it. The meat seamed a bit fatty and tough to cut with a knife. It also was not terribly hot. We were told up front it would take time to cook, so we had some very enjoyable German beers while we waited. The Potato Pancake was an up charge, so I was hoping for a fried grated potato like you find most places. This seemed like the boxed mix you find in the grocery store. Not bad, but just did not meet expectations. I'm not sure if I chose poorly, or if it's just an ok place. We might try it again to see. read more

For tonight's date night, we chose Deutschland Downtown (our first time). I love eating downtown, but we generally avoid it, because parking is always limited and difficult. But we're getting better venturing down there. To start, we ordered 2 unsweetened iced teas (our signature drinks), and a Bavarian pretzel (because yum)! Anytime a Bavarian pretzel is offered on the menu, I almost always order it, because it's a favorite of mine. This was served with a yellow mustard, and was delicious with or without the mustard. I'd say it was my second favorite to Park Lane Taverns Bavarian pretzels. As we typically do when trying a 'new to us' restaurant, we ordered a full course meal: appetizer, soup, entrée, and dessert, and split everything. We still managed to come home with leftovers, as we often do. For the soup, we went with a cup of the Soup du jour, which was a rustic chicken noodle. It had a subtle flavor, but was fresh and hardy. I would most certainly order it again. It almost tasted as though it had healing properties. For our entrée, we went with the Schweinrolle, which was a pork loin, stuffed with wild mushrooms, onions and seasonings, wrapped in bacon, then topped with a brown gravy. For our two sides, we chose Spätzle, which is a small dumpling noodle, and Bavarian potato salad, which is roasted red potatoes with herbs, served warm (fantastic!). I was craving comfort food on this cold winters night, and Deutschland delivered. To complete our most fantastic meal, we ordered Apfelstrudel (an apple strudel in a flaky crust, stuffed with spiced apples and raisins) and served with a scoop of a hazelnut ice cream. Neither of us were fans of the Apfelstrudel. It had a strong flavor in the apples, which I'm assuming was either rum or apple cider vinegar. Either way, it was a disappointment, but the hazelnut ice cream was on point. All in all, we will most definitely return! The service was outstanding, and the ambiance of the pub had an authentic German feel. Glad to have finally gave this restaurant a whirl! read more

My one star comes from a combination of poor service and cold food. We waited for quite some time for our food. This wouldn't have mattered so much but it just went downhill from there. Our entrees arrived with no appetizers. The waitress blamed it on their new computer system. She said she thought we had them but she had been to the table several times for refills prior to us receiving our food. She got the order in for the appetizers and brought them to us boxed for takeout. The Pierogis were appetizing. The schnitzel was okay, didn't enjoy the breading falling off and the amount of sauce is very sparse. Potato pancakes were the worst. They had a "canned" appearance and tasted heavily of flour. Bierocks were also not very authentic and lackluster at best. Desserts - apple streusel was tasty, the chocolate puff pastry not so much. All-in-all, I probably will never return here. We love German food and liked the vibe of this place, but have to knock off a few stars for the speed of service and the quality of the food. We came in at 2 with a party of 7 to an empty restaurant and it took more than 2 hours to get a few beers, pretzels, and greasy schnitzels. There were people that came in 30-40 minutes after us who left before us and who ordered the same thing. The servers were friendly, but weren't fast at all and it felt like they forgot to put in our order. We asked for the kids meals early because our kids were starving and were told it would come out with the same time--when it did come out it was a bunless hot dog and Pringles--weird that it took an hour and a half. read more

Our waitress really was the sweetest person I talked to all day (beside my date ) We ordered the pretzel, bratwurst sampler, extra side of kraut, radish mashed potatoes, cucumber salad, and two bitburger beers. Everything was delicious, it was very similar to the food I tasted in Germany so I was very happy about this. The only reason I didn't give 5 star was because they ran out of two of the items we both really wanted. Not a huge deal but definitely something that can be fixed, and the table we sat at in the beer garden had two spiders that decided to make a bunch of webs and jumped on me....not a huge deal but something that can be fixed. The wife had a schnitzel, and while the meat was ok, not great, the sides were not very good, and they were salty. We stumbled upon this hidden gem by chance but I kid you guys not the food is amazing!!!! Friend ordered duck with cabbage and mashed potatoes - he loved it!!!! (Except for the mashed potatoes - not his style). Husband ordered braised pork shoulder with spaetzel- he devoured it!!!!! I had chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes and spaetzel. Mashed potatoes were a little different (don't know exactly what spice or root was added - it was a little radish-y), first few bites were interesting and then I was fine. Came for my birthday dinner tonight and they even gave us a free slice of Apfelstrudel -- which was to-die-for delicious. My husband and I split the breaded schnitzel and a sauerbraten as well red cabbage, sauerkraut, and the cucumber salad. Every bite had me looking forward to the next. This restaurant is the most authentic food I have eaten outside of Germany! I grew up in Germany. My mom is German so growing up we ate mostly German food. In the 30 years I have lived in the US I have never found a German restaurant that was truly like home. This restaurant is perfection! They even have a Radler on the Menu. This is a German drink combining beer and coke. I have eaten in the other German restaurants in the area that most people in the area think of as good German food. I was disappointed. I will admit that when it comes to German food I am more critical as I grew up there and still visit family regularly.
