This little store on Columbia Pike functions as a German specialty grocer, deli and sandwich counter. Our focus today was the sandwich counter. One important thing to know is there is no seating of any kind. You will be taking your sandwiches to go. (My suggestion: get a few slices of butter kaese at the deli counter and munch on these on the car ride home. Then enjoy your sandwiches in peace at your abode.) They do offer napkins and plastic silverware if needed. The sandwiches are freshly made to order. You take a number and a deli employee will assist you. They have numerous types of bratwurst to choose from. Additionally a number of German cold cuts. We ordered a Nurnberger bratwurst and the Tyrolean hot sandwich. The breads for both were very fresh and the sandwiches tasty. The mustard on the bratwurst was full of good horseradish! The Tyrolean was moist with a good combination of tender meat and sauce. The bread was a nice mild rye - it was a two hander sandwich! We were both full having eaten these delicious sandwiches. The deli employees were all friendly and efficient. Hi everyone, just wanted to leave a review of German Gourmet on Columbia Pike. Before I begin, I want to identify what the ingredients are for a classic Reuben. You'll need two slices of seeded or marble rye bread, about six ounces of thinly sliced corned beef or pastrami, two slices of sharp Swiss cheese, roughly a quarter cup of well-drained sauerkraut, and two tablespoons of Russian or Thousand Island dressing. A little butter for toasting the bread and optional spicy brown mustard round it out. That said, what I actually received was the absolute worst Reuben I've ever had in my entire life. They used ham instead of corned beef or pastrami, an insult to the name. The Swiss was bland and low-quality, not sharp at all. There was no mustard, barely any Thousand Island, and I couldn't even detect any sauerkraut. The bread wasn't toasted, and they still charged me $12.50 with tax. If this is what passes for a Reuben at a supposed German delicatessen, save your money and go somewhere that actually knows what they're doing. read more

Getting ready for Oktoberfest? This is the spot to stock up on brats and beer! If you're looking for authentic German ingredients for a meal, German Gourmet Deli won't disappoint. They've got an excellent selection of brats and sausages, salamis, cheeses, pierogis, German novelty items, chocolates, and--of course--wine! The only downside? Not all staff seem familiar with German specialty foods. I actually asked about pierogis and was told they didn't know what they were... until I stumbled across them in the freezer myself. ‍ and BTW... the potato onion had a nice pepper flavoring. All things Deutsche. Having lived in Germany, you crave certain things that cannot be found,until today. My wallet and stomach did not need to know about this place,but alas they are now aware! I had the best beef bratwurst and brother. I FINALLY had curry worst after 15 years. It was soooo lecker! The desserts and cheeses cannot be passed up and I for sure took home a loaf of the black bread. The food was so good that there are no photos for proof. Kitchen closes at 3 pm, after which the sandwich menu is unavailable. I was caught offguard when my family and I rushed to get here for dinner, arrived at 6:30 pm, and was approached by a (friendly!) employee informing me of this and that they were closing soon and to place my deli counter order soon. I was flustered upon learning this and quickly picked a few small precooked brats, Bavarian Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and rye bread to bring back to the hotel. It wasn't enough to feed my family, but that's totally on me for being bad at making decisions under time pressure. Picked up a six-pack of some beer from a brewery in München that my husband is a fan of as well. Everything tasted great, and I wish I could have tried one of their in-house sandwiches. Heard they changed owners....not sure I like the change. Have been out of a few of my grocery items for a few months now and I have my doubt they will restock. Seem to be bringing in a lot from other countries but until they change the name, no one will know to shop there and like me, many of the regulars come for the German specific items. Pastry case seemed half empty today but then we realized they had changed the arrangement to put some sliced cake at the bottom where you cannot see them & mix full size cakes in between. Was much easier to make selection with all the sliced lined up on top. The napoleons we chose from the pastry case were still partially frozen when we got home 45 minutes later. As long as they keep the German cold cuts , full variety in stock we will keep coming back every week but even some of those they have been out of At times...we'll see. Certainly an interesting and random shop for all things German! It feels a bit like an airport shop in here (nice for anyone missing airports these days!) from the shelving, arrangement of items, and things for sale. The meat selection looked pretty decent as well as the mustard and other groceries, including German shampoo! The wine and beer selection is also pretty good. I've been here a few times over the years. Great selection of German wine, beer, condiments, candy, seasonings, sauces, dried goods, tea, a whole bakery and butcher, and a gift shop in the front. That gift shop has some insane prices. I totally understand with inflation and having mostly foreign goods is pricy, but if I need pickles, mustard, some knorr soups and sauces, and a pretzel... I'm looking at a pretty penny. There are other stores that carry German groceries that don't charge nearly as much. My favorite thing to get here is the instant coffee. Like the Davidoff or Jacobs. If you camp, this is the best instant coffee and even has a crema on top. I've served it to guests and they thought I brewed it. I've tried just about every pastry with the Berliner being my favorite as well as their Christmas cookie selection. I wish they had the supplies to make those cookies. Anyways, I did have one not so great experience and that was ordering a sandwich with no meat. I was given bread with sauerkraut and a slice of cheese. I think there was supposed to be tomato and mustard as well. So I sadly ate that in my car. Their deli sides (potato salad, etc) are alright. Deli meat selection is great. If you don't have a budget and love German food and culture, this is your place. PS if you avoid nestle, I found out after a trip there when I got home that unilever bought knorr and nestle has Maggi. That was a bummer. The German Gourmet is an excellent business in my community. The food quality, selection and staff are topnotch. My husband and I come here usually to purchase sausages and cheese. We started a new holiday tradition last year where we make a special trip to the German Gourmet to fill our Christmas socks with European confections. This is our second year enjoying the tradition and we love it. The variety of chocolate deliciousness can't be beat and we also pick out a few jams and coffee. They have a full deli and bakery. The hot sandwiches here are so good! They have over 10 types of sausages to choose from. The bread they use is also delicious and definitely makes the sandwiches even better. Pretty unsuspecting German spot in Falls Church that reminded me a lot of my Ramstein days! It is a deli, and sandwich shop, they have a ton of German beer/wine and other German products. I got the Doner sandwich that was really good and fresh. The roll had an amazing crunchy outside and soft interior. The veggies were fresh on the sandwich and the side salads were also really good and authentic. You may think it's crazy to eat such excess right after a long winter/Covid shutdown, but I like my food flavorful, inspired and luscious. Look no further than German Gourmet! German Gourmet is a big store in D.C. They have a solid base of German, Austrian imports and have an extensive butcher shop, bakery and an entire ante-room filled with Weissbier, Spaten, all sorts of Brauerei Spezialitaeten like 'gezapfte' (tapped) and beers that are half dark, half light (geschnitten). This shop sells Rhineland Rieslings and Burgunder wines. They sell spices, boxed powders, pickles, tasty spreads, choco, pretzels, summer wursts, Thurgauer Fleisch, knodel, soups, vegetables, breads and bakery sweets. The Staff was the epitome of friendly. They asked how they could help, weighed/wrapped all items properly and safely - and I did not even bust out any elaborate German COOKING SCHOOL recipes yet! Repeat customers were greeted with the usual German flair for kindness and genuine care. Be careful you can get lost in those isles.. All sorts of folks come here: everyone is made to feel welcome - old ladies, young kids, fast guys in ties, fishermen, some families on trips etc. All people come to German Gourmet. The only thing I'd say as a serious ELITE Yelper, is that this store is in need of a BIG, large colorful sign upgrade. UPGRADE IT!! That's it. I have never seen such a wide collection Haribo gummy candies. On top of that there is a great selection of German/European groceries and beers. There is a deli where you can get all the sausages and order sandwiches. I stopped by on a weekend and tried the Schnitzel Cutlet. It was fantastic however like the imported items in the store, it a bit too little food for a bit too much money. I'll definitely be back when I want to stock up on Euro candy! read more

Today I was craving a sandwich since it's been at least a month since I've eaten bread. I searched on YELP for the best deli's and this store came up. I'm so happy that this place is only 15 min from me because they have everything (Beer, Wine, hot & cold sandwich's, bratwurst & sausages, chocolate, ice cream etc). Once I got to the counter to order I really didn't know what to get so the young lady helped me and said the most popular Hot sandwich was the Tryolean and I wanted to try the Schnitzel Cutlet, so I got both of them. I know, I know fatty right..? It's okay it's the weekend.. Then the young lady asked me about sides so I told her just give me the most popular ones which was the potato salad and the spaetzle salad. Food review time.. Tryolean with Spaetzle Salad- Wow! Wow! Wow! I now know why everybody tries this sandwich and it's the number 1 on their menu. The pork loin and the smoked bacon was moist with the grilled onions just mixed perfectly. The sunflower bread was very interesting to me since I don't really eat bread. It was one of the best sandwich's I tried. The spaetzle salad was interesting as well since I didn't really know was it was. I did like how it was accompanied with cheese. Schnitzel Cutlet with potato salad- The schnitzel is a pork cutlet pan fried on a Portuguese roll and this bad boy didn't let me down at all. The pork was juicy and I could taste the fresh lemon that was squeezed on top of the pork. The potato salad tasted like bacon to me and I asked why and they told me they add pork instead the salad. While this store is one of the only stores that specializes in selling German products, I have to say I was disappointed to see that their product offering has moved to push non German products. Also they have raised their prices significantly. To add insult to injury then also now charge you a non-cash adjustment of 2.75% on all credit card purchases. This is outrageous. Next time I shop there I will come with a bag of pennies to pay for my purchases. Let them deal with currency then. read more

As a fellow German, my recent visit to German Gourmet on Sunday left me extremely disheartened. The lack of clarity regarding the "take-a-number" system, combined with the indifference of the staff, made it an unnecessarily challenging experience. The absence of clear signage or guidance to take a number left me waiting in front of the deli/bakery area, hoping to buy bread. Regrettably, no one acknowledged my presence in an almost empty store. When someone finally informed me about the number system, it was too late; they had already sold the bread to a customer who arrived after me. Being German in this situation added to the frustration, as I expect better organization and efficiency from a store in my home country. I left German Gourmet feeling ignored and disappointed with their lack of consideration for customers. If you value a hassle-free shopping experience, I advise caution when visiting German Gourmet. Finally tried their sandwiches today. Did not disappoint! The muenchener was deliciously unctuous with the leberkase and smoked gouda (a warning: very strong taste), and my schnitzel cutlet was hot, fresh and tasty. We got tricked into getting a side--but that's okay, the sides were good and just a dollar and some change more. Purely take-out, so should have a plan as to where to eat your goodies. German Gourmet is an awesome family-owned grocery store specializing in German/Austrian cuisine. They have so many delicious items here, but I'll focus on my absolute must-have favorite items! They have a huge selection of bratwurst, you have to get the "Homemade Bratwurst" at 8.99/lb it's a pretty good deal, I've taken these home and grilled them up and everyone loved them! I've tried others as well and they are all great! They have amazing sides such as red cabbage and potato pancakes, but my favorite side dish is the Tyrolean Cabbage - I have never seen this served at any German/Austrian restaurant and it's similar to coleslaw, but does not use mayonnaise. It's delicious! I LOVE that they sell pork schnitzel already breaded. I've taken them home and fried them up - and they are amazing. Make sure you grab a side of gravy (Jägerschnitzel dry mix with mushrooms is my favorite) and a bag of dried spaetzel - a type of pasta made with eggs. I was really disappointed with the German Gourmet today. Their customer service is horrendous. I had sent an email to pre-order cold cuts for 12/23. The email was never answered. Then I tried to call. Nobody picked up, automated message, no chance to leave a voice mail. So I finally decided to go to the store. When I mentioned the email, I was told, "we can't deal with that right now". Please don't put an email address on your website, if you're not willing to check and answer your emails. When I asked whether I could place my order for the 23rd now in the store, I was told, I should have done that by 12/19. Of course, the website doesn't mention that. Funny enough, while I was in the store another customer was told to call to make sure her liver wurst is going to be in stock before she comes to the store tomorrow. They have everything you've been craving from a Currywurst to a Berliner and even a bag of Smoked Paprika Potato Chips. They have a deli, full bakery and aisles of other German goodies.
