I consistently feel like Mike and his team care about me. I had not been to the dentist in almost 10 years and had three cavities that needed filling. He had to give me the hard news of needing my wisdom teeth removed and also needing to have my cavities filled. He was able to give me a referral to a lovely oral surgeon who took care of my wisdom tooth extraction easily and he took care of all of the cavities. He truly cares about your comfort during the experience as well and uses longer acting topical agents for numbing so your pain doesn't come back as soon as your filling is completed. He explains things well and gives you enough information to make informed decisions. He treats you with a lot of respect as well. I don't usually review other services like dentists, but I cannot pass up writing a review for Dr. Mike and the team at DeWan. As soon as you walk in, Haley will greet you and she is just so lovely! She knows all of their patients by name and even their partners (I got my husband to go there too). The hygienists are professional and thorough with their cleaning. This is a no judgement zone! I had not been to the dentist in a bit and they treated me with respect and patience. They do not usually take insurance but you can get reimbursed by your insurance after. I have been coming here exclusively since 2010/11 and wouldn't want to go anywhere else. If you don't already go to this dentist, you really should!! Most people hate going to the dentist, right? DUH!!!!!! Well, while I am still not a fan of dentist offices and procedures to begin with, this is the best dentist I've had the pleasure of going to. It's a small, family owned and operated place where everyone here is extremely friendly, personal, informative, and kind. You can tell they actually care what they're doing and who their clients are. They are extremely in-depth, and when slinging around their technical jargon, I tend to ask a lot of questions about what they are talking about even if they aren't talking to me. They take the time to answer and explain, which is how it should be. After all, it's my mouth they're working on. Speaking of which, they are the only dentist office I've been to where the dentist and hygienists are NOT rough with my mouth. I appreciate that immensely because it seems every other individual has been. They also offer amazing perks like sunglasses while being under the examination lights and ipods & headphones if you'd like to listen to music while you're there, scented lavender neck wraps, an eye mask, a lumbar support pillow, the works! They understand that going to the dentist can be stressful for many and they really try to make you as comfortable as possible. High five! read more

Dentist visits instill fear in the hearts of many... dare I say, most (myself included). That said, if it is possible that there exists such a thing as a positive visit to a dentist, you'll experience that positive at Dewan. Situated super conveniently on the corner of Farwell and that one side street right after Maryland, you'll find Dewan in the sleek building that looks like a super-modern wooden ship. You can't miss it. And the decor? Mindful, and worldly. And it's so soothing in there! And the receptionist, Amy? So sweet it'll make your teeth hurt. (Really. While scheduling my appointment with her and doing the research re: whether or not the place would take my insurance, we had two phone calls. Each time after hanging up, I was left smiling. She's *that* nice.) And the staff? Super nice, helpful, knowledgable, and understanding. I was offered a lumbar support, a knee support, a memory foam neck pillow, and music while I waited for my cleaning. Dr. Dewan himself is smart and honest, and you can tell that he and the rest of the staff genuinely care about your teeth and your well-being. Warm fuzzies, but it's true. I'm giving 'em a four because, well, I've only been once. I can't imagine them not getting the final star in the form of an update relatively soon, however... because if yesterday's visit was any indication of what's to come, I've found a fabulous new place to get my teeth cleaned and cared for. My teenage son was playing basketball & took an elbow to the mouth. He complained the next day that his front teeth were hurting, so I made him an appointment at Dewan Dental to have his teeth examined & cleaned. I know a lot of people are terrified of the dentist, but we're not among them. I expected that he'd get a simple examination & cleaning, & what we experienced was stellar customer service from friendly knowledgeable staff. I was Dentist phobic. I literally had not gone to the dentist for 5 years due to my fear. A friend recommended DeWan Dental and I have fallen in love with my dentist and his cadre of professionals. Since 2005 every time I come in I am greeted warmly, by name. I am offered, in a respectful way, all sorts of comfort items (heat wraps, pillows/bolsters, headphones/music) to make my visit more enjoyable. All my procedures are explained and adaptations are made as needed. In addition I know that DeWan Dental takes their membership in the neighborhood and community seriously, getting involved with seemingly disparate activities in town - until you realize it is all about building community. Dr. Dewan and his staff are so amazing that I drove 8 hours round trip to have chipped and fractured teeth after an auto accident. He was so gentle and showed more than genuine concern about repairing my teeth so that any repair was unnoticeable. I was impressed by his expertise in using crown material that matched my other teeth. I've had work done by other dentists nearer to my home, but after Dr. Dewan's work, I'm left disappointed with the work I had. I just called his office and asked what kind of resin he used specifically and color type to see if my local dentist can get that type for me. If I have to get any more crowns, I am seriously thinking I'll drive to Milwaukee and make a mini vacation out of the drive. I see it is well worth it. No one compares! I take great care of my teeth and want any work I have to reflect the same effort! If you think dental work is all the same, think again. It's like buying costume jewelry, or getting the real thing "for the same price". If you had a priceless ring lose a stone, you wouldn't replace it with a Cubic Zirconia, would you? The staff at Dewan Dental Wellness is really as good as it gets. Never before have I looked forward to going to the dentist! In lieu of repeating what other reviewers have said (all great things which I agree with), there are two things that have really made DDW stand out from the rest: 1. Support staff is professional, warm and very patient-focused. Case in point: last year I had scheduled an appointment for two small fillings the end of November. They mentioned during a cleaning that the fillings were quite minor, and because the work wasn't urgent I could make an appointment for a month or two out if need be. So that we did, and then about a week prior to the appointment, I received a call to see if I'd prefer to re-schedule the appointment for after Jan 1 to allow it to count toward the 2016 deductible instead. I hadn't considered that, but they had noticed! Might seem small, but I greatly appreciated that they had gone out of their way to do so. 2. You would be hard pressed to find a provider as genuine as Dr. Mike. He has a true passion for his work, and it always shows. Another thing he does - and I think this comes from enjoying his work more than anything else - is he explains everything in depth. Personally, I tend to run quite curious about all things technical, so I really love this. He knows his stuff, obviously, but it's really neat that he's also so willing to explain it and share with patients. Other need to know stuff? It would appear that he has a large referral base (I, like many others on Yelp, appear to have found him based off a coworker's recommend), and for an East-side business the parking situation is always good. After a few cleanings and one other appointment (all at different times of day), their multi-hour street parking has always been readily available. I felt he wanted to do work that was not necesary and so i did not go back. Its been a few years and ive been fine with just cleanings. I have been going to see Dr. Dewan since about 2001. He and his staff have always been great to me. Many years later they are great with my wife and kids, I couldn't say enough about the service we receive. I needed a lot of work (i have horrible teeth), he built me a plan and tackled the worst problems first, while staying within the boundaries of my insurance plan. They offer headphones and ipods if you need them to relax while they work. Many years later my teeth are in great shape. The people with one star are crazy IMO, he doesn't just fix cavities to fix cavities. They need to be fixed before they turn into root canals and larger problems. read more

I am new to Milwaukee from San Francisco and Toronto where I have had amazing dentists. They were amazing because they were reasonable people who would explain their procedures to me. I made an appointment at Dewan Dental Wellness and the receptionist told me I would need an x-ray in order for the dentist to look at my mouth. I explained that I had recent x-rays that I would have transferred over and that I just needed a dentist to look in my mouth to see if I had cracked a filling. I got off the phone feeling bullied into an x-ray. Upon entering the office, I was struck by how many staff he kept and how old they all were--all about 50 and all female. When I went to the appointment I had decided to only have an x-ray if it seemed necessary. So, when Dr. Dewan sat down and said I'm going to take two images before he had even looked at my mouth, I asked him how the images would help him. He began repeating over and over again, that in order to make a diagnosis he needed x-rays. Finally I asked if the x-ray would help in the diagnosis. At that point he got up and handed my chart to the receptionist and refused service to me. I guess I wasn't' subservient enough to be his patient! read more

They give you the information you need to make informed choices, and when I have asked I have gotten exact pricing on different procedures to help determine when to do certain things. I thought I would go to a dentist closer to home. I went once for a cleaning and the hygienist wasn't especially gentle, but I really was not that impressed, when she said, "is that a veneer?" (neither one of us was kidding or is exaggerating) Because there was follow-up work, I needed to make another appointment and thought maybe this was because I was new and didn't really know the staff, yet. Unfortunately, I had to change this second appointment (much more than a week in advance). Then, the day I was to go in, she phoned and canceled me because of snow storm closings. The next date was 3 weeks away and I phoned them 4 days in advance because I had to cancel again (all of these are for work meetings). Dr. Dewan's wife (reception) informed me that she WOULD NOT book an appointment for me, for they were far to busy to keep scheduling and rescheduling appointments and that it isn't FAIR to other patients. I said, "okay." I thought, fine, the feeling's mutual. Then, she called me over ONE YEAR later to ask me if I wanted to schedule an appointment with them. Are you serious? I went back to my Dentist on the south side and am very happy. Lesson learned...I should have never left. read more

My youngest, who will turn 4 in a week, had to have a large cavity filled between his molars. He is horribly shy and, unlike his brother, scared of everything. Dewan and his staff new how to treat him better than his mom or I. We both went, thinking we'd hold his hands and praise him, or if worst came to worst, hold his head still. The staff kindly and convincingly told us it would be best if we waited outside. Skeptical, we handed him off. The worst part was the numbing, but he didn't flinch, cry or complain. Then there was the Nemo movie (short version) and the filling, which, he claims, he didn't notice at all. We're making an appointment for our other son right away. If anything changes, I'll update my rating and review. -------------------- I've dropped one star because Dewan seems to have a business method that doesn't agree with me. He's too thorough. He'll find every little nook and cranny in x-rays and call them all cavities worth filling. But when the quote comes for thousands of dollars and you realize you can't, he'll kindly offer a list of "priorities". The problem is that no parent feels comfortable telling the dentist not to fill the cavities. I wish he would just tell us what work is truly necessary. -------------------- Update 2, and 2 fewer stars: It's come to my attention that some parents simply don't have the experiences to know what is unnecessary. Instead, they trust their kids' dentist as if he were as honest as their favorite aunt. They have all 9 cavities filled for 200+ dollars in their child's baby teeth, never knowing, that saving those 1000s of dollars by neglecting those micro-cavities wouldn't have done their children any harm whatsoever. I've come to believe that Dewan uses unethical fear tactics. While he was fitting a crown on a dead tooth of mine that had required a root canal, he told me I should have the opposing tooth done too, because it would need it eventually anyway. When I suggested it might not, he told me about people who would have all of their teeth crowned, just to save themselves the trouble of having to do it later. This reminds me of my grandfather, whose dentist in the 50's convinced him to pull all of his teeth and order dentures. That dentist was crook at best. -------------------- Update 3. Why do we keep going here? Good question. Maybe so that I can offer more reviews. My wife took my boys in for a checkup. Similar to when my oldest was 6, x-rays came back with several cavities each, and they signed them up to have them all filled, including the ones in the baby teeth. I did my research. When I called the dentist to discuss, she admitted that whether they need filling is controversial, and that often a 6-month checkup to see if any cavities have progressed is sufficient. But in the meantime, they'd told my wife they all needed filling because if you don't fill them, they can ruin the adult teeth. (That's the controversial part: yes, they can ruin the adult teeth depending on how deep and bad the baby tooth is rotting. Micro-cavities? I think not. And there are articles out there with legitimate science. You have to look hard, though, because most dentists who talk about it want to fill cavities. There's moneys involved. And tons of dentists talk about it on their websites.) read more

Coming to the office is always a five star event. The surroundings and the staff are exceptional. Our most recent boomer teeth event was no exception. We had taken off for a month long trip on a Saturday, to the southwest, in our small RV, for a family wedding. Four hours into the trip my husband broke off a good part of a back molar. We called the office, spoke to the dentist and returned home. On Monday the team squeezed him into the office and Tuesday, the next day, he had a new crown. Yes, the next day. 1. Their staff said they always call the insurance companies and pre-authorize the visit so we would know the procedure codes and what I would owe out of pocket. They did not do this. They called me the day before my appointment to verify my appointment and also let me know if I cancelled or rescheduled it would be too late and I'd be charged. When I asked them if they called my insurance they did not and were very willing to have me do it myself, so I did. 2. Their appointment book is booked out for months, so if you're looking to get in in the next month or three maybe look elsewhere. 3. I was also informed they are not "in network" for anyone's insurance. Which means you're going to get charged a whole lot more than if you go somewhere in network. 4. I did not receive my bill from DeWan until over two months later. I do not think that is professional and thought that at the least a business would be up on billing patients and insurances. If neck warmers, a nice view and fancy building is what you're looking for in a dentist, this is the place for you. The dentist is nice and knowledgeable but I prefer a more conservatively-minded dentist who is only going to have their patients get work that isn't unnecessary. read more
