Dewey's has been in business at one place or another since 1930 when Dewey Wilkerson left Jones Brothers Bakery in Greensboro and moved to WS to open his own bakery. The bakery embraced the Moravian community and began offering Moravian cookies, sugar cake, Love Feast buns, cheese straws, and more. The bakery moved to Thruway in the mid1950's, and remains there still, the last remaining original tenant of the center. This spot opened over 10 years ago and offers are the items as the original location. I was in the shopping where this spot is located and decided to pop in and get some sugar cookies. I came here in hopes of finding some fresh sugar cake. Alas, their sugar cake is prepackaged and didn't taste good even when reheated. I've had some of their cookies before, and they are pretty good for grocery-store premade cookies. The ambience is packed with gift shop vibes, not great for me. Personal preference for minimalistic decor but full of kitschy goodies if that's what you're into. The staff were also a bit lackluster, generally disengaged, and ready to go home. I stopped by Dewey's Bakery to pick up treats for a birthday party I was going to. As soon as I entered the store I was greeted with a friendly hello and a "can I help you". I looked around the store and noticed a large variety of gifts and foods to choose from. After checking everything out I was able to pick out the items I wanted and also purchased some of their fresh baked goods as well. Dewey's has been around for years but I never went there until recently. My son said they had big cupcakes and that was what he wanted for his birthday cake. Well they don't sell those so I don't know where he saw them. I choose a couple pieces of oreo cake, two lemon raspberry cupcakes, one confetti cupcake and two chocolate eclair cupcakes. The lemon raspberry cupcakes were so good. I wished I had bought more of those. That is all I got to try but my son said all the desserts were good. I also did not know Dewey's carried so much other stuff. They have lots of gifts to choose from like carolina/duke and state stuff. As we continued our date day last weekend (yep, all we do is eat) we went to Dewey's because I had concocted a master plan. I wanted to mix Dewey's cake in with Kilwins ice cream. These two amazing places share a parking lot and this just sounded like a good idea to me. We have been to Dewey's lots of times and nothing ever disappoints food wise however a few times the staff have been rather dismissive or kind of sharp. I had one tell my 7 year old daughter she couldn't have a certain ice cream flavor because it was too cold. Uh, what? What she meant was it was overly frozen to scoop but I'd think an ice cream place knows the old heated scoop technique. The way the store is laid out is kind of annoying because once you make it to the baked good after the labyrinth through knickknacks and such it can be a real pile up of people and they're asking you what you want with a bunch of people in front of you so you can't even see what's available. You are then stuck in the mass trying to make it to a single register and the whole thing can feel rather claustrophobic but it's really unnecessary because it's a very large venue, it's just set up in a way that does not make great use of their space as far as customer comfort goes. Coming on an off time is a good move, you can just breeze through but otherwise it's a bit like being in a zombie horde. read more

I came in for the Dewzy! I asked one of the friendly staff which flavor she recommended, and I was glad she said "The Strawberry Dewzy." I have been to this Dewey's twice now. Today I went to get a Dewzy, which I highly recommend to anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth. Both of the staff members said they had newly taken over ownership of this location and were incredibly nice. They ran out of whipped cream so the guy making my Dewzy gave me extra ice cream instead. You really can't go wrong here. The cake squares on their own are great (and free on Monday!) but when you pair the soft serve ice cream with it, it's heavenly. No visit to Winston-Salem is complete without a stop at Dewey's. The are an excellent little bakery with local favorites. Try the Moravian cookie, hot cross buns and sugar cake. I also recommend the cream horns, eclairs and cupcakes. You have a good number of choices, but it is a small place. They also sell local souvenirs and the like. I have not tried their ice cream, but they certainly do seem to sell a lot. Always friendly service. You really can't go wrong making a stop here. read more

When it was handed to me the name was Max instead of Mo which I had to wait for the correction, I started looking at my email and I had ordered their primary colors balloons and got roses. All I can say is Oh My God! Dewey's can have all of my money! Between the Moose Tracks Ice Cream and the selection of cupcakes and cake squares....you will be in heaven! Dewey's is a good place to grab one of their well-known cake squares or some ice cream. It is also a good place to come have a cup of coffee with a friend or get some work done and study. I had never been to the old location of Dewey's and I'm told this one just opened recently. It is in the shopping center at the corner of Fairlawn and Reynolda (the one with Jimmy John's, Planet Fitness, etc..). It is located beside Lowes Food. Dewey's has a really nice atmosphere and serves as a great spot to study. They have about 5 tables inside and for the warmer days there is outside seating as well. I didn't have to fight for a table because it seems that many patrons choose to take their goodies to go. To sample the sweets that Dewey's has to offer, I ordered the Pumpkin Spice Cake Square and the Salted Caramel Cupcake. The cake square was delicious. It was extremely moist and was not overly rich or sweet. The icing was very good, but again was not slathered on too heavily. The cupcake was average. Dewey's is known for its Cake Squares for a reason. Along with their sweet treats, ice cream, and coffee, Dewey's sells little knick knacks. These items include tea towels, coffee cups, picture frames, and decorations for a bathroom or kitchen. Many of them are themed around North Carolina colleges and the state itself. There are definitely some good options for gifts. The people working here are very friendly and helpful. They are happy to let you sample different flavors and always serve up the treats with a smile. They also didn't seem to be bothered at all that I posted up for over an hour to study. That is always appreciated. Dewey's is definitely worth checking out for those of you with a sweet tooth. It is also a great change of venue for those trying to study and can't stand to see the inside of a library for one more second. read more

I haven't been here in a long night time and now I know why. The ladies that work there are so nice but the products at this location is not as fresh as it used to be. I ordered the holiday cake squares and the texture of the cake appeared to be less spongy. The cake was really firm and not as fresh. I had excellent service and the food is super delicious!! I got a napoleon, cream horn , carrot cake cupcake , and peanut butter and jelly macaroon. All for under 9$!! The napoleon was delish with custard inside,flaky pastry, chocolate and pecans on top. First time I tried it. Could have used a little more custard on the edges but they put a good anount on there. The cream horn had too much powered sugar on it for my taste but it was easy to remove. The cream was super delicious but there was alot of pastry bread in comparison to the amount of cream but it's still the best I have ever had! The macaroon was baked well and pretty good. I will get a different flavor next time. They made it really well though. The carrot cupcake was most but has raisins and no pecans. It was good but the raisins turned me off a little. So I absolutely love Dewey's. I've been coming here for years when in the area. I always get cake squares and literally can't imagine getting anything else. I love the classic white cake squares as it's light and fluffy. I also love the pink lemonade cake squares. Very fluffy, but definitely a little more flavorful. I've also ventured out and tries the red velvet, pumpkin spice, and the strawberry cake squares. All very good. I really enjoyed them all, the classic will always have a special place in my heart. And the prices are definitely dirt cheap compared to other places in Atlanta for sub-par cake. Keep doing what you do Dewey's! read more

I don't understand why locals like this place so much? I've had much better bakery items than this. The cinnamon rolls were dry and crumbly. I want yeasty and gooey! When asked when the cinnamon rolls were made, I was told they weren't even made in-house. That they were made at another location and shipped over here. The cake squares again, were dry and not the greatest. As another reviewer mentions, I'd rather get some sheet cake from Lowes Foods and nom nom nom on that stuff. I do like the ice cream. You tear up a little when you walk in drooling over the goodies. I tried their pink lemonade ice cream and oatmeal ice cream in a cup. I couldn't decide. They put their fresh baked cookie and Icing into the ice cream and it just speaks to my fat rolls. Their pink lemonade ice cream had pink cake in it. The ice cream melts away leaving little heavy residue. It's a clean finish..... like a good beer.
