*This is my second and updated review* I used to come to New Novelty every so often as I lived around the neighbourhood. There isn't an Indian restaurant near my new neighbourhood so after a few months of not having Indian I had a craving and decided to get pick up. I ordered a full order of the lamb curry, one veggie samosa, and a take out dinner special with butter chicken, Palak paneer, rice, and naan. Upon pick up, the man behind the counter said he was giving me 3 veggie samosas, even though I only ordered one, because it was near closing and he didn't want them to go to waste. I asked for a small chutney ($1) to add to the order but he ended up giving me a medium sized instead. Such outstanding service that I had to add an extra star ! Lamb curry was aromatic and had plenty of pieces of lamb - will definitely order again. The take out dinner special came out with 4 large cut up pieces of naan, a decent serving of basmati rice, tasty butter chicken but only came with 4 pieces of chicken, and palak paneer that only had a few pieces of paneer. Veggie samosas, especially with the chutney, tasted so good. Maybe extra good as two of the three were for free, haha! This take out order feed me for at least 3 meals. Friendly and professional young lady who runs the front counter and also answers the phones. Absolutely no attitude, kind of a quieter shyness in a way, but she does her job well and always a pleasure dealing with her. As for the food: Not fantastic, but good , never a complaint in the dozen or so times i went there for a take out order. The sauces are not overly salty like some Indian curries can be in Vancouver. The veg samosas are cheap, as are the mint chutney or tamarind sauces. Butter chicken is fine, i like the lamb and vegetarian dishes, decent naan , etc, etc. So, inoffensive , decent food, nice staff, parking not too hard to find depending on the time of day, the interior of restaurant looks pleasant enough, seems clean (never ate inside--takeout to go only) and seeing as i've been here 12 times..i guess i like the place. :) read more

So disappointed after buffet price gone up to $12.99 and no more Samosas are included anymore. Boo! I used to like this place for inexpensive buffet and fresh Naan bread was impressive too. I love spicy Indian food. But I think any of you that feel the same way who are not Indian always get the safe route from the proprietor, that is never spicy! I have ordered the daily special here many times and enjoyed it although not spicy so this time I ordered the Karahi Chicken Curry and asked the sweet girl on the phone to please make it spicy, the way you feel the heat rise up from the core of your body. She said she understood. I also said if the cook asked if it was an Indian or Canadian person who asked for spicy to tell him I was an Indian person. Then the Karahi Chicken I received was truly outstanding. The heat epi-centered from my core and was so delicious as well. I made two meals out of it and will be a forever customer. read more

Butter chicken - it could have more chicken, but I can't complain about the price for it. Chick pea curry - was my favourite !!! So yum, the spices in it made it soooooo good. Why not 5 star? Because I felt the amount of chicken in Butter chicken was very small. My friend and I had lunch buffet on Saturday 11:30am. Not crowded at all and they have 6 kinds of curry, fried rice, spinach cheesy naan?, vegetable dish, vegetable samosa, deep fried dessert on buffet counter. Plain naan on our table and 6 kinds of sauces at side of buffet counter. Every curry was flavorful and delicious. Chicken was tender and juicy and I guess that's why people tend to scoop more chicken from Butter chicken container. They bring fresh made samosa often. read more

There is no shortage of Indian restaurants on Fraser, and it's hard for any one to stand out. This place has managed to become the one I'm most likely to order from, though. I've never eaten in, but when I go to pick up there have always been a couple occupied tables, and there is often a line of people waiting to pick up. (So, you might have to wait a few minutes longer than the estimate given on the phone, but you also know that it's gonna be good.) Their Dal Makhani can be a bit on the thin side, but it's still not bad, and everything else that I've had has been really solid. They also have decent samosas at the same price as the places on Fraser that advertise how cheap their samosas are. They also have a varied selection of naans, and the filled ones are both tasty and fairly filling (I don't mind that they're more than twice the price of the plain). The staff I've had while picking up have always been friendly, and I'm pretty sure they are the same people who would wait tables, so I'm assuming the sit-down service would be likewise. I still have a couple places to try out before I can safely say which Indian place on Fraser is the best, but I've picked up from this place a lot, and it has never disappointed. read more

This place is my go-to for some local neighborhood Indian take out! They have take-out meal deals that is $5.99 for lunch, and $6.99 for dinner for one. It includes butter chicken, jasmine rice, naan and your choice of an additional main dish. I ordered 1 lunch take-out and chose palak paneer to go with the meal. The meal itself is very filling for just $5.99! The butter chicken was good, but the chicken was a tad dry so I had to deduct a star. Their naan is delicious and is great for dipping in the butter chicken and palak paneer sauce. I've ordered from here 3 times and never had a bad experience. Used to come here when lunch buffet was only $9.99. Now it's $12.99 and quality hasn't changed for the better. Their naan bread and butter chicken sauce is good, but the chicken breast is dry and minimal. Their spinach paneer barely has any paneer in it. The rest I don't touch, I usually only stick with the rice, butter chicken, paneer, and if I have space in my tummy, one samosa. Their jalebi is unfortunately not crispy since it's been sitting in the heat for so long. I suspect after reading the reviews and eating in, this place is basically for take out. Upon entering it looks really clean! But...it almost seemed as if we were an annoyance. The one server was very unfriendly and at first I thought maybe the restaurant was closed. I asked if we could eat and she set a table. As we looked at the menu at least 4 different parties came to pick up take out. Since my mom was having a low blood sugar moment, we really needed to eat and opted to order. We ordered veggie pakora, Malai kofta and rice. I also asked for a diet coke but the server seemed bothered by this request. (My pop never came). The food came fast and was fresh and yes, very tasty. I was disapointed to only see 2 kofta balls though. I've never had only 2! Usually at least 4. So for $12.99 I don't this its worth it at all. But the sauce was quite good. Absolutely spectacular. With very skeptical walking into an empty restaurant but very pleasantly surprised with the for dishes I ordered. 1 had the butter chicken, 2 had their Lamb Sagg, 3 had there lamb curry and finally also had there Alu Gobi. All were spectacular in their own right however in a white guy I loved the butter chicken the most. I find their food just as good as any other Indian restaurant at 3 times the price. I don't understand the few negative reviews from people because my experience here has been very good. The young girls that work behind the counter have been engaging and friendly when I'm there. I will start conversation and they were friendly and very engaging. The service has been very good in my opinion. The food quality is excellent - if you complain about too much oil and you say it's the "worst" Indian restaurant you have ate at then stay away - more food for people who appreciate it and understand that Indian food can be oily and I can assure you that this place has less oil than others I have been at. I usually hit the lunch buffet on a Saturday afternoon. The food is always hot and fresh - I've never had a cold samosa from the buffet. The food is very good and very reasonably priced. The one thing I wish is that the buffet had more options, or that it gets changed up. It's always the same dishes so that is disappointing. read more

I found this spot, which looked very popular and ventured in. The front is primarily an Indian sweets counter, with an impressive array on offer (at least 40 varieties by my count). Tucked away in the back corner is a very small lunch buffet. It feels like the type of buffet I remember as a child visiting Indian friend's homes. The type with no labels, but everything looking wonderful. Even though it is small, the quality was very good for a buffet. I sampled the following: - Mutter paneer: this was a very creamy version of it, with nice quality paneer, and peas which were not mushy. The spicing was well balanced. My favourite dish overall. 5 stars. - Samosa: freshly made, filled with a potato mixture. The crust was not greasy at all, it was actually kind of light. I couldn't find any tamarind on the buffet - which I would have loved to add to it. But otherwise delicious. 4 stars. - Murgh makhani: This was heavy on the sauce and light on the actual chicken. (I got the impression other people had picked out all the chicken before I got there as it was slightly empty as well.) The sauce had the right flavours, and the little bits of chicken I found were tender. 4 stars. - Chana masala: The chickpeas were cooked just right, and the sauce was nicely spiced. 4 stars. - Palak paneer: The spinach still retained a lot of the natural spinach flavour, and it had nice chunks of that same paneer which was found in the mutter paneer. Nice dish. 4 stars. - Paratha: This was sitting on the buffet too long and was a bit soggy. I could tell it probably tasted good when it was fresh though. 2 stars. - Naan: They made fresh naan and brought it to the table. This was really nicely done, and had just the right texture. 5 stars. - Raita: Very cooling and a nice contrast. 4 stars. - Fresh cucumbers: Also very cooling and welcome for the heat/cooling balance. They were nice and fresh and presented nicely. 4 stars. - Jalebi: These were heated up, and were not overly sweet as they sometimes are. Very enjoyable end to the meal. The buffet sounds larger when I write about it then when you see it. But it was clearly more than enough variety to pull together a fabulous meal. Quite the steal too. The buffet was only $7.99. I did walk by this place a few times this year, however, didn't think to actually stop in for the reason is that the word "sweets" all this time made me believe that this was a dessert place. New Novelty isn't your average Indian buffet. This is set in the heart of Fraser street and serves as a prominent contributor to the ever growing indo-Canadian community. I remember coming here when the samosas were 3 for $1, and while the prices have gone up to 2 samosas for $1.50, I will always go here before any other indian restaurants in the area. They have great food for a more than affordable price. My most recent bill with my partner was $25 for two chai's and the lunch buffet. On my plate I had samosas, chutney, butter chicken, palak panir, spicy mixed vegetables (jalfrezi), daal (lentils), and so much more! Our server was a sweet young girl that was attentive. The food is good especially the eggplant Bharta but I hVe an issue everytime I order it for takeout and request less oil but when I go home all I see is oil floating on top. I got takeout food order, food is tasty but lacking in quantity for meat fishes: Shahi paneer: generous cheese cube quantity, excellent sauce, moist cheese. Karahi chicken curry: tasty sauce, chunks of chicken breast which I didn't like that much as I prefer dark meat, ratio of 40% meat to 60% sauce. Lamb curry: what a joke. I was originally planning on going to another restaurant a few doors down, but since I got ignored there lol, I came here instead and I'm really glad that I did! The buffet selection isn't bad, there were about 8 main dishes, dessert, and sauces on the side! The food was pretty good, not gourmet by any means, but satisfying nonetheless. Went here for dinner on a Friday night. No one else was eating in, but the take out counter was doing brisk business. Service was friendly, and they kept our water jug filled and our plates cleared attentively. We had: Fish pakora- very tasty, esp with the green chile sauce. Fish was firm & moist, really nicely cooked. Vegetable korma- tomato/cream sauce, a bit sweet for my taste, but it was my husband's favourite dish of the night, so YMMV Chicken vindaloo- we asked for spicy. It was medium spicy, good flavour, chunks of chicken & potatoes. This one was my favourite, but next time I'd ask for very spicy. Butter chicken- we asked for mild, and it was savoury and delicious. 2 orders of rice 1 order plain naan 1 order garlic naan Total bill was $54 with tax, without tip. 2 adults and 2 teens, and we were stuffed, with some rice leftover at the end. The same items are a buck or so cheaper as takeout, and they have a $6.49 take out dinner special, and a $5.49 lunch special. Really glad to have found this place, since it's very close to my house. Family-run restaurant. Really good value. Everything on the menu is pretty awesome but I'm partial to the Malai Kofta and Mutter Paneer. The only place we like as much is Vij's but it's a different kind of place altogether. The owners and workers here are incredibly sweet and passionate about what they do. It's good, cheap, and mostly Northern style. We always eat in but the takeout looks like an especially good deal if you get the specials. Highly recommended. read more

I come here for samosas regularly. The are $0.50 cents each + tax but I can't remember if there was a minimum that you needed to buy. The samosas are great and I like it better than some other Indian places that I have tried as they have more flavor. You can pay with credit card unlike other places which are cash only. read more

It's small - basically 1 meat dish of delicious butter chicken, palak paneer, chickpeas, lentils, potato/carrot/green pepper, potato stuffed partha, samosa's and some condiments. Came after reading the reviews and... don't get why people look so amazed with the buffet. It's true that the prices are low, 10bucks for a buffet and 6bucks for a lunch special... However, regarding the buffet, only butter chicken is available as a main dish and everything else are veggies, rice and samosas. The butcher chicken was average, not impressed with it, and had to fish the few chunks of chicken in the sauce. Rice was dry and hard, looked like it was there for a while and didn't replace it. Samosas were good, but not very tasty. And all the veggies: spinach with paneer, chickpeas, and the carrots and onions... they are just veggies, and again, they don't pay much attention of when they have to refill the trays. Cheap, but not excellent. Have had amazing buffet for 12 or 13bucks with so many choices, including beverages, salads and desserts... that this sounds like a joke to me. Take out is the way to go, a butter chicken meal for less then $7.00 bucks is unheard of in Vancouver. Went to Dhaliwal Sweet and Restaurant (one block North) first and had the worst service ever. Seems they ignore non-Indians, so if you are not Indian, don't bother, they won't serve you. So I walked over to New Novelty a block away and was pleasantly surprised to get service without waiting, and being non-Indian wasn't a problem. The woman behind the counter was quick to take my order and had a very short wait time for my food. She was pleasant and friendly. Prices were lower at New Novelty compared to Dhaliwal Sweets as well. Most importantly, the food was delicious, so I will definitely be going back to New Novelty Restaurant & Sweets. I just ate here with my wife. We ordered the lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka masala. They made a mistake in the kitchen and served us both chicken so the waitress let us keep the extra dish for free while they made another lamb vindaloo. I tipped a little more than I usually do for this pleasant mistake. The food is excellent. The food servings are good for the price. We will definitely be trying it again. They have a nice dinner special advertised and if the special is served as well as the a la carte, I think we will have a new joint to add to our list. read more
