Went in on a Friday and it was completely dead so I was skeptics but the Pho and Bahn Mi were excellent!

I've been meaning to try Dharma Garden Veggie Deli ever since we walked by it one evening while we were in the neighbourhood. They're a Vietnamese vegetarian spot run by temple monks. It's a few doors down from Dumpling House. We dropped in on a Saturday (around 4:45pm) and it was busy. Order at the counter, grab your own water/tea and wait for your order number to be called. There's lime wedges, jalapeno peppers and a few sauces up at the counter too. The inside is no frills with half a dozen tables and a fridge in the back stocked with Vietnamese desserts and takeout boxes of vegetarian meats. There are menus everywhere but they only offer 14 items; banh mi (4 options), noodle veggie soups and salads. There's banh xeo but only available on Saturday's. - Bun bo hue (#7) ($9.50) - this was everyone's favourite dish of the night. Interesting that they already throw the bean sprouts and herbs into the bowl for you. Broth had good depth and a surprisingly decent kick to it. We enjoyed all the meats (imitation ham, meatballs, etc.). - Bun rieu (#8) ($9.50) - the broth wasn't as tasty as the BBH; a lighter, tomato base. The imitation crab was just like the real thing though. Decent but would try another noodle bowl next time. - Bi cuon (#10) ($9.50) - the salad rolls were excellent except for the deep fried taro. It added a great crunchy texture but it was salty. - Banh xeo (#15) ($11.50) - came with a side of lettuce, herbs and pickled daikon/carrots. You don't see too many places making Vietnamese crepes so we had to give it a try. The crepe wasn't what we were expecting; on it's own, it was too sweet and not crispy. It was better when you combined all the ingredients into one bite. - Dou hua ($3.00) - tofu pudding with pandan. Silky, smooth texture. Makes me want to try their other dessert offerings. Not often you rush across town right before a place closes on a Saturday just to see what this place really was about. We were out on a date and needed some food after digesting a bad movie. I knew that the omnomnomnivore wanted something vegetarian even though she wasn't going to say it so I made the journey to see if I could make it out here before closing time. First off, this place closes at 730 pm, which I did not know. It is located oddly off of the busy restaurant area of Kingsway/Joyce. I would not consider this place a hole-in-the-wall but it is an order and take out, or order and eat and get the heck out. So how we knew about the place was one night a family member who treated us to some home dinner gave us their tomato broth (which apparently is only made 2 days of the week) and I did not have this, as my partner ate it one day and said it tasted like Bun Rieu, but amazingly enough there is no crab in this, this is completely vegetarian. I also read that the food was actually prepared by Vietnamese monk-nuns. We arrived at around 710 PM and there was a lineup of people getting takeout (as I said, didn't realize they were closing soon). We originally ordered the Saturday special... yes they make a dish on the menu which only says... Saturday only "Banh Xeo" which is a special Vietnamese Crepe and we also wanted to order one of their Banh Mi's but was told they don't make them at night (probably ran out of bread) so we went with the Bi Cuon (veggie salad rolls). We sat ourselves close to the fridge in the back and waited for our order. The seating is very basic, chairs and tables, go get your napkins, sauces and utensils near the front counter and bring them back to your table and wait for your food, romantic experience no... but really you are here just for the food. We were told that the Banh Xeo was sold out, so we had to replace our order with the special rice platter with a side of salad, some soybean patty that tasted like a pork chop and the vietnamese egg cake with vermicelli imitation pork shreds. While we were sitting around I noticed in the fridge filled with imitation fish sauce bottles and other edibles they sell right off the shelf. We eventually received our food items on treys at our table. Everything looked very delicious but really how did it taste. I will start with the spring rolls, wow... the texture of the finely wrapped rice paper was amazing, each roll was tight packed with carrot's, bean threads, salad and other things but each had a crunchy bite, you can hear the crackling every bite you put in your mouth, how was this so? And these were not hot, what also enhanced the flavour was the fish sauce... this fish sauce has no fish and yet it taste right. Each bite was a bundle of joy, not only are you not eating meat, it was tricking me to the point I didn't need it. The rice dish came by and each bite of nicely cooked broken rice and the imitation pork chop, something about all this food was really homey, this food could be the regular all meat and the first bite I could tell the difference, but this food is so good that your tastebuds just go to this food and you do not think of being the carnivore that you are. Think cafeteria setting since you are here, the food is prepared with care, I paid by cash and did not see any POS terminal in the end I thought everything was fairly priced, it is not cheap and not expensive for what you are getting, some people may have the notion that there is no meat, it should be more, well I can say alternatives to this vegetarian meal have been higher priced than this. Know that it is closed Sunday, and they are not open late. Will be back to try other things. read more

Dharma is a small shop right along Kingsway. I came here two others on a Friday afternoon, you order your food at the front, grab your own cutlery and water, and take your seats. Not so many people at first, but it started to fill up. Our food came out relatively fast. Of course, I wanted to give just lots of different dishes a try. We each ordered our own bowl of pho then got a banh mi and salad roll on the side. The salad roll was fresh and had some extra seasoning from the (I think) tofu filling. The banh mi was alright, the bread was toasted perfectly, but the filling was a bit lacklustre for me. This was the first vegan pho. I'll have to admit that the broth felt lighter in my stomach. I found the flavour a little more complex and more variety in terms of the texture. Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Dharma. This place deserves an upgrade to 5 stars considering how many banh mi's we've had from here in the past 2 months. The value is just unbeatable and they do meatless banh mi's so well that I would never miss the meat version. I love that they keep it authentic and don't try to modernize it or jazz it up to mark up the price. They stick to their roots and consistently produce a legimately tasty vegetarian Vietnamese sub. Got the $9.50 Veggie Salad Rolls around 4:00 PM on a Wednesday. There were 5 patrons eating and my order was ready in about 5 minutes. Only debt and cash, no credit cards. There were four rolls included in the $9.50 price which differs from most other eateries offering just two rolls. The takeout order consisted of a plastic carry bag, a cardboard container, 4 rolls halved, and dipping sauce. No napkin was included. The rolls offered smaller portions and had a wimpy consistency due to generous amounts of lettuce and limited use of rice noodles. Not every roll featured taro crunchies. The sauce was a sweet vinaigrette variety which differs from your standard savoury peanut sauce. One container of sauce was was not sufficient to dip all four rolls. Would prefer the menu had the option of purchasing 2 rolls versus 4. The included House sauce was inadequate to dip all four rolls and was not as effective as a good peanut sauce. Rolls on the smaller size and overuse of lettuce limited flavors and texture. Love this place.. I do love Vegetarian meals but the imitation meat can be a little much for me. They have a great menu selection as well as ready made dishes you can take out. It's not like your typical resto though. Here's how the work. They are self serve... you order/pay (CASH ONLY) grab a table and wait... there is self serve hot tea and water, they call you by memory I think. Wonderful, wonderful place! I have had two opportunities to eat here in the last year: the first last December during the evening and the more recently on Remembrance Day for lunch. Both visits were consistently positive, and they were even able to accommodate for a group of eight after we called in advance to make reservations. The majority of our party ordered #6 (Pho) and #7 (Spicy Soup with Rice Noodle - with the modification to substitute the rice noodle for pho noodles), as well as a sub and some spring rices for appetizers. The portions are large and the price is affordable. Things to know prior to your visit: -The business is set up similar to a kiosk at a food court. -There is complimentary tea and water on the side near the tills, and you get to choose where to sit. -Everything is self-serve so you can decide to order and pay prior to grabbing a seat, or sitting for a while to wait for friends prior to ordering. -Chopsticks, spoons, forks, napkins and all that jazz are also on the side where the tea and water are. -There is also hot sauce and other toppings available for those who wish to add more flavours to their food. -Their blinds are broken, so if you visit during the day and it's very bright outside, be sure to situate yourself as needed to not be blinded. My friends and I all paid with cash, but I noticed a debit machine there so they probably take debit now? Call ahead to confirm. I'm not a vegetarian and I've never had vegetarian pho before, but the broth and noodles here are pretty decent! No MSG too! So bravo to them to making a tasty broth without it. It says a lot because it means they actually used a lot of good spices in the soup. I will say I missed the meat because I do eat meat. But I'd come back again! I just ordered the regular vegetarian pho and my cousin ordered the bun hue, which supposed to be spicy. Even though the spicy broth wasn't really spicy it still had really good flavours. However, we both found the broth to be more oily than other places. The fake gluten meat was ok, but according to my vegetarian friends it's amazing pho! We also tried the vegetarian banh mi cha lua, and it wasn't bad, but I definitely prefer the real ham just because it has more flavours. This place is a great place to try out if you're curious. I don't think you'd be disappointed if you're a vegetarian, but if you're a meat lover like me, I think it's only a once in awhile place. read more

I absolutely LOVE their spicy pho, it's what I get every time I come. Food is so inexpensive and modest but in huge portions and, most importantly, it's good. I love the place. Heads-up #1: Self-serve, cash only (although I think they take debit now). Heads-up #2: The ladies who run the place are Vietnamese so they're kind of limited with English, but the slight language barrier is nothing to worry about. I never have troubles ordering as they're all really nice (you'll see the Buddhist monks working in the back kitchen). Heads-up #3: They have a sliding fridge in the back where they sell other veggie meats/delicacies that you can take home to easily cook and eat. Great local veggie place! They increased the prices recently but what with the dollar plummeting, it is understandable -- though with the large portions, the food is absolutely worth the price. The interior may look cheap but it's the food that's important. Their menu only has a few options so it seems limited, but each item is unique on its own and, having tried most of them before, they are all great. If you don't know what to get, the classic Vegetarian Pho is always a good starter's choice. The premade food in the fridge at the back are great too; they are off-menu stuff and they change up often to provide variety, so check there often for hidden gems and favourites! P. S. I love the self-service as I can refill my tea or water as I like, and I enjoy the peaceful Buddhist atmosphere. As a regular, this place is a frequent go-to stop for me and my family. read more

The best Veggie Pho on Kingsway I think. The bowls are huge, the imitation meat is much better then other places, texture and taste and look. They have absolutely fresh limes, chili oil, veggie hoisin sauce and more. The lady monks don't always speak English but the pictures are all there. All you have to do is point. And they have delicious items to go too if you need to make plans for a late meal at work. I will always go back for Meatless Mondays. read more

I would give 5 stars if the noodle they use was different. They used to use noodles that were better, changed that a couple years ago. Everything is so good there. Not sure if subs are vegan as it tastes like mayonnaise. I cannot remember but one of the noodle soup is very oily. Their spring rolls are different from what you expect. It's very dense and filling. Don't forget to check their fridge for take out vegan deli food. My kids call them veggie meat and love them, They are $6 package. They also have vegan fish sauce. They have the self serve tea and water dispensers. I wish they used reusable cutlery and cups instead of plastic cutlery and paper cups. I love the straightforward atmosphere here. The counter service is quick and cash-only, the menu is simple and satisfying, and they have pre-made meals in the fridge if you are on the go. You order up the counter and they announce your order is ready very shortly after. $10 (incl. tax) for any of the noodle soups -- I had the Bun Rieu, which was very tasty, though on the oily side. Felt like a meatless meal so we stopped by Dharma Garden. We ordered the curry and the spicy soup noodles. The noodles were very light and had decent flavour, but it wasn't very spicy which was disappointing. There is no MSG in the broth and you could really taste the difference without it. We enjoyed the curry more, good flavours but it did feel a bit heavy. To order food from here you have to go up to the counter; after we finished our meals we wanted dessert so we went back up to order. The first time we ordered our food an elderly lady who helped and we paid by credit card. When we went up to the order the dessert, it younger employee who helped us, and when we tried to pay by credit card again she rudely told us they do not accept credit card. We told her we had used credit card twenty minutes earlier to pay, and she told us whoever had helped us was wrong. We didn't have any cash and we could have used debit, but because she was so rude we decided to leave. Overall the food is good here, but because of the service we won't be back. read more

Love this veggie place, absolutely adore the fresh salad rolls with their special in house sauce. The rolls are rolled tight and fresh with veggies and a mix of taro crunchies to make it unique. Made fresh to order and great to eat-in or take away. The restaurant is basic and self-serve, water and utensils are on the counter for you to help yourself. Check the hours - they have been really busy so there have been days when I come by and the are closed to due a special event or holiday. I've been back twice. Service has been awesome. I like that they stay out of your way after you pick up your order. I get to savour the spices and herbs in solitude. Loved the food here. Tasted very fresh and healthy. Had my first veggie pho a sandwich and two Vietnamese rolls. The food is not delivered to your table and you have to pick it up from the counter which seems odd because it really looks like a hotel that serves. At the end we were asked to bring all our dishes to the counter in a kind of rude way. That's why 4 stars only. One lady was super nice though. By far my favourite veggie resto. Very delicious and full of flavour! I've become vegetarian for the past two months and eating here definitely makes it a lot easier to maintain the lifestyle. I love almost everything on the menu. I normally get bun Bo hue, with papaya salad or spring rolls. Always feel satisfied and clean after eating here. The house salad roll is basic and a little overpriced so I recommend you not to order it and simply just make this dish at home. read more

It's typically quite difficult to find vegetarian versions of classic meat-based ethnic Chinese or Vietnamese food - there've been a few pho shops that have opened up that cater to vegetarian/vegans, but their offerings are limited to the classic fare of noodles and salad rolls. This place, run by the Buddhist society next door, is something unique: a Vietnamese deli-restaurant that serves a range of Vietnamese fare that offers non-meat eaters options - and a lot of them. Along with pho, salad rolls, viet subs (banh mi), you're also able to get a variety of soups and currys that are often offered at Vietnamese restaurants but rarely with a vegetarian option. Proteins are done quite creatively - check out the deli fridge, where one can find a broad range of Vietnamese vegetarian deli products in the city. It's a little bit off the beaten path - but I implore people to check this place out and support the business. Hadn't eaten here in a while, but I was up for some soup and it was Ash Wednesday - where else to go but here for a vegetarian lunch? It's a very quiet but lovely little place that I hear is run by a Buddhist monastery, frequented by monks and with sweet elderly ladies managing the front. I've just gotten the #6 pho in the past, but today I also tried the #9 veggie rolls and was allowed to get a half-order (4 pieces instead of 8) when I asked. Cash only. Limited English but they do their best to accommodate you. I think the prices increased since the last time (with tax it was $12 for the pho and $6 for the half-order rolls) but I still consider their prices reasonable for vegetarian food and what you get is filling enough. Order your food and wait until they call you, help yourself to water and the condiments and cutlery up front then sit and enjoy your meal. The rolls had a surprisingly nice crunch and I liked them. The pho broth is light and some of the the "meat" parts are vaguely sweet, but it tastes good with lime and chili. I've yet to try their subs, but I've heard that they were good. Will come back again. Some people pass on the notion of vegetarian food but I encourage my fellow omnivores to try this place if they want something a little different. read more

I had the pho here recently, and it was delicious; I've also had the curry in the past. The pho was fresh, flavourful, not too salty. I like how they pack everything separately (soup, noodles, and garnishings) so the sprouts etc stay fresh when you order takeout. It's a tiny family owned establishment, very clean and self-serve. Collingwood doesn't have a lot of vegetarian options with regards to pho or noodle houses, and this is a great option. read more

This is a good restaurant if you love staying healthy and eating all veggie. It is so clean and peaceful to eat here, because most of people eat here are elder. I love the fish soup.
