Years ago I ordered a full tuxedo from Black Lapel (for my own wedding) and they did an amazing job. It not only fit perfectly but was well made and the customer service was outstanding. Following this experience I continued to order shirts from them over the years. Recently I ordered a suit (and more shirts) from them and the customer service and clothing left a lot to be desired. To begin, my order of a suit with an extra set of pants and two shirts was split in half because they wanted to confirm my measurements were still accurate. After trying on my tuxedo, and confirming it still fit perfectly, they still insisted on splitting the order. I also asked for a small additional interior pocket to be added and was told they were unable to accommodate this. Seems odd for a custom clothier... I was told they'd make half the order and, once I confirmed everything fit, they'd make the other half. To my surprise, some 6 weeks later (I was told 4-5 weeks for arrival), my suit and a shirt arrived. Ok... is it really that big of a deal to hold the extra pair of pants and additional shirt? Those seem like much smaller items compared to a full suit. But, again, after confirming the fit, I waited for the rest of my order. After multiple inquiries by me, asking where my items were or for even a tracking number, I was still waiting. Now don't get me wrong, they responded, they just literally gave no helpful information: "Let me check on the delay..." Finally, 8 weeks later, my items arrived. Much to my dismay, however, the pants don't fit the same, do not feel like the same material, do not have a button on the back pocket, and are completely different interior construction (see picture). When I contacted them about this, which you can do via email only, they said "we recently switched manufacturers and this is likely where the discrepancy lies with your fit and finish." Well, that's the first time I'd been informed of that... not to mention it could have been avoided had they made the entire order all at once like I originally requested. Additionally, the additional collar stays I requested were not sent (despite being reassured that they would be). When I responded saying I'm disappointed and am questioning ever ordering from them again the have gone dark on me. They literally can apparently care less. So please, take my advice, DO NOT order from Black Lapel. It pains me to say it, but I strongly recommend shopping elsewhere; I will be.

I wanted a slim-fitting three-piece suit in dark blue that was made from durable, high-quality fabric and would come in under $1,000. Thank you to Reddit for turning me on to Black Lapel as a trustworthy option. I worked with Michael at the Boston shop to tailor the fit just right, and felt like I was in good hands with an expert who had helped hundreds of men like me. The shop is easy to visit, up the stairs from street level in Downtown Crossing. Scheduling an appointment was very easy, as they have a lot of availability, and communications were great. I had no problem receiving my suit when placing the order two months before the big day, even after experiencing a small delay when my chosen fabric was briefly out of stock. Skip the department store and those junky online suit retailers, and shop in person with the experienced suit experts at Black Lapel.

The 'mystery bottoms' wound up being an ugly skirt that feels like polyester (thats on me for ordering a mystery item though). And to top it off, depite advertising a free mystery gift with the order, nothing was included. Incredibly dissapointing and i will never order again. Misleading clothes, and the operation seems very disorganized. A total waste of money.

I chose The Tailory to create a custom bridal jumpsuit after being assured they could replicate a…read morespecific design, provide 5-6 fittings (or as many as needed), and deliver the finished garment well before my wedding. The idea was to replicate the top of a dress I'd tried on and make it a jumpsuit with wide leg pants. I first met with them in October of 2025 for my Memorial Day 2026 wedding. Unfortunately, the experience was defined by delays, broken promises, poor communication, and a lack of accountability. At my first fitting in January, I was shown a test garment that looked nothing like the reference photo. I was assured that once the corset structure was added, it would match the approved design. At my March fitting with the actual fabric, the top still looked nothing like the reference, and I was again told that additional structural work would make it look exactly as promised by the next appointment. They routinely delayed appointments, and when I expressed concern about not having enough time to complete the outfit on time, they assured me that we were on track. However, when I returned in May--after additional delays and with my wedding only three weeks away-- literally no progress had been made. Even simple work I had specifically been told would be complete, such as lining the pants, had not happened. In hindsight, the multiple fittings and test garment served little purpose because the top design was clearly never developed correctly from the beginning. Rather than fittings showing incremental progress, I spent months being told that the next fitting would finally make it resemble the reference photo. In fact, no progress was actually being made. At my final fitting, weeks before my wedding and 7 MONTHS after our first meeting, I was told that the employee who had been handling my garment was no longer with the company and that they were starting over on the top. Despite having the exact reference photo that I had provided in October and that they had repeatedly assured me they could replicate, I was now being asked what I wanted the garment to look like. During the appointment, Shao cut off one of the straps to completely reshape the top and used Sharpie markings across the front to indicate future changes. She acknowledged we were starting from scratch. I was also told that the low back and low front shown in the reference design would require fashion tape or a tie across the back, despite the fact that I had been assured from the beginning that the design could be recreated as shown. The top design was supposed to replicate the top of a dress I had tried on that required no such support. When I expressed concern that my wedding was only weeks away, I was again told that this timeline and process was normal. Dylan and Shao explained that they had been away and that this contributed to their lack of oversight, yet afterward Dylan claimed in writing that "we've had multiple conversations throughout this process regarding timing and progress." In reality, I had not spoken with Dylan since my initial consultation 7 months earlier. The next fitting appointment they offered me was almost two weeks later. There would literally be no time to spare between this next appointment and my wedding if the top was not completed to perfection. I paid for the garment in full when it was commissioned in October based on the representations made during the consultation. Looking back, that should have been a warning sign. None of the key promises regarding the design, timeline, or fitting process were provided in writing, and when problems arose, I was directed instead to terms of service buried at the bottom of the company's website. At this point it was looking like I might not have anything to wear at my wedding, and I was forced to find another outfit off the rack two weeks before my wedding. The Tailory refused to let me out of my contract or issue a refund. I have since spoken to multiple vendors in the industry to inquire if this process is "normal" and all have listened to my story in sympathy and horror. Some said that sometimes unavoidable issues come up with tight deadlines, but in those cases they work round the clock to deliver the completed garment with at least two weeks to spare. Even if some of the issues stemmed from a former employee, my contract was with The Tailory, and the company never accepted responsibility for failing to deliver what was promised or even issue an apology for the stress they caused. They treated me like my expectations were unreasonable, and I was to blame. I was able to secure a refund through my credit card company, but The Tailory made the process difficult by disputing my claim. After a thorough investigation, Visa did eventually find in my favor. I cannot recommend The Tailory and encourage others to steer clear.

My suit was crafted in just four weeks. A minor error was made with the lining. I have lavender lining instead of black, but no big deal. The cost of a suit at Suit Club is significantly less than their competition. You may want to check out Kerri Knoll fabric as well. It is the same price as VBC, and it appears to be a better value.
