Due to my health, I need blood work done once a month or every other month. When I was young and…read morehealthy enough to donate blood, even the blood bank needed to poke me several times before they could find my vein. For some reason, they would always say my vein moved -- like it had legs and walked away on them! I was usually in pain because the needles are not small. Even when I go to the ER, both of my arms usually end up with 4 pokes total -- 2 in each arm. They try 3 times and then call another nurse. This is the story of my small, sneaky veins. lol It is very rare for anyone to get blood from my vein on the first try. I always ask for butterfly needles. That is, until I started going to DSL. I have had several blood draws there and they have never missed. I usually get Norma, who is very professional and caring. She knows my veins are small, but she has never once missed. When I was with Kaiser, 2 nurses missed my vein, so they had to call an anesthesiologist with ultrasound equipment just to locate it. After 4 pokes, they needed to call in a specialist. lol Several times I went to DSL when I was very cold, and I know that when your body is cold, your veins are even harder to find. Even then, they never missed. I would like to recognize the technicians, especially Norma, for always getting my vein on the first try. To put it in perspective -- Kaiser hospital nurses missed 4 times and had to call an anesthesia technician to come withdraw blood and place my IV, meaning 5 needle pokes total. With Norma, it is just one poke. DSL will always be my go-to lab for blood work. This message is for upper management: without Norma and the other technicians there, I would not continue going to that DSL location. Because they do a fabulous job and only need to poke me once, I will always choose that location. Please make sure they are recognized and appreciated for their outstanding work.

If possible, I would advise going later in the day, more towards the 3-4pm slot just because the Kupuna tend to be there first thing in the morning so you may have to wait a while. If it is busy, don't forget to pull a number and just chill outside if you can't find a seat, but pay attention to the sign so you don't miss your turn. Phlebotomist are very thorough with your information and always double or triple checks the reason for your visit. Drawing blood has always been less than a 5min visit. They are close on Sundays so if fasting, keep that in mind :)

I've been going to Straub in Pearlridge for YEARS ... fighting the traffic unnecessarily!!! The Diagnostic Lab at Queens West is just a couple miles down the street and they're open from 4am!!! I usually have positive experiences with Diagnostic Laboratory Services (DLS), whether I'm bringing…read morea patient, a family member, or coming for myself. Unfortunately, my visit to the Queens West POB 102 location today was very disappointing and unlike anything I've experienced at DLS before. After my patient's doctor's appointment, we were sent to DLS for lab work due to a miscommunication regarding the lab orders. The staff member assisting us, whose name tag I later saw was Robert, brought us to the back. I had accidentally left my patient's ID and insurance card in the car, but he told me he could look up the information. I gave him the appointment card showing that two physicians had ordered lab work. As he searched on his computer, I noticed he became visibly irritated and frustrated. He began asking me questions about one of the physicians, including her name and where she sees the patient. He asked where the doctor sees the patient. I answered, "Yes, she's her doctor," because I didn't understand what he meant by "where." He asked again, "Where?" and I again replied that she was the patient's doctor, still not realizing he was asking for the physical location where the physician sees the patient. Then, for the third time, he loudly repeated, "WHERE?" At that moment, he made a tense clawing motion toward his face, his expression showing obvious frustration and exasperation. His tone was loud and forceful, and it felt as though I was being reprimanded rather than helped. It wasn't just what he said--it was his tone, facial expression, and body language that made me feel intimidated and uncomfortable. I honestly froze because I didn't understand why he was so upset. It was only then that I realized he was asking for the physical location, and I explained that the physician provides home-based medical care and sees the patient in her home. He later asked where my patient usually gets blood drawn. I answered honestly that I didn't know because she is often a difficult blood draw--even experienced nurses have difficulty. Again, his facial expressions and demeanor made me feel as though I had done something wrong simply by answering his questions. My patient has cognitive impairment and was smiling throughout the encounter, unaware of how uncomfortable the situation had become. I wanted to leave but didn't want to create a scene in front of her. After the blood draw, I immediately brought my patient to the front desk and asked another staff member for the urine specimen cup we needed. A few minutes later, Robert came out, politely handed us the cup, and even held the door open. I appreciated that gesture, and I respect that. I understand everyone can have a difficult day, and I truly hope that was the case. However, this interaction was deeply concerning. I am also genuinely concerned for Robert. The level of frustration he displayed during our interaction was alarming. I don't know what he may have been going through that day, but I sincerely hope he receives whatever coaching or support he may need. No one should ever feel afraid, embarrassed, or as though they are being attacked simply for answering question or misunderstanding a question when he ask me "where?"

It was always crowded, super long wait and I barely understood the doctor. I finally took matters into my own hands, looked online and found Alohi Clinic. Although I can't speak from first hand experience with the appointment, my other half had no complaints. But what I can say is booking online was easy for me and when I had to adjust times, calling was just as easy. There is a code to get into the building, which they give you, and the waiting area is a good space nice cool and quiet. They offer services like facials, hair removal, etc. but they also are an internal medicine practice so you can come for normal PCP stuff. It's pretty great. The wait is quick, the front desk is friendly and the office is clean. So far it's been great with this clinic and I'm glad we found it.

It's been…read morea long time since we've had a primary care doctor, and I didn't realize how much I was missing that sense of genuine care until now. From our very first visit, Dr. Coelho made us feel completely at ease. He's incredibly knowledgeable and thorough, but what really stands out is the way he takes his time to explain everything clearly -- not just the "what," but the "why." You never feel rushed or like just another appointment on the schedule. There's something about the care he provides that feels personal and comforting -- almost like being "at home." That's hard to put into words, but it truly makes a difference. For the first time, I can honestly say I'll never dread going to see my primary care doctor again. If you're looking for a physician who combines professionalism, compassion, and genuine connection, I can't recommend Dr. Coelho at Alohi Clinic enough.
