One of the co-owners, Low, cut my hair this time. I was also greeted by the other co-owner, Mike. Both were cool and respectful. Low, in particular, knows how to have a good conversation about current topics. It's raw and unfiltered private communication like this that lets you unwind and just be yourself. Be aware that there's usually a wait time, but on less busy afternoons--like Wednesday afternoons--you can often walk in with minimal wait. The neighborhood is less populated by Black men, so this place stands out as a go-to barbershop for our community, and I really appreciate that. The barbers here may be older, but they definitely know what they're doing. They have steady hands and always offer a welcoming, professional environment. I've never encountered any negative vibes or unprofessionalism. While I don't visit often, the barbers maintain a great reputation for precision cuts. At between $40 and $50 for a haircut, it's an affordable option considering that other cities often charge more for similar services, especially when it comes to fancier cuts. This place sticks to the basics, offering solid, old-fashioned haircuts, which I personally prefer. I used to go here back in the day in the early 2000's era. I lived uptown but this shop was my go-to when in midtown. (I'd get a cut then a mixtape from the African dude ma-men right outside) I think the barbers name was Mel, great haircut can't complain; the hairline was so sharp it left a sting (cut) but i liked it; it felt tight. I didn't like the hustle outside barking for clients. This review is based on my experience, however the bad reviews recently do not surprise me. Mel was cool but the other barbers seemed like they had attitude, so the reaction from other customers i read about, seems accurate. Today I wouldnt go here; they try and rip people off for trashy cuts using the midtown tourist area as justification. Their shop is located in an old vintage store top building on the upper level. The shop itself could be cleaner; probably the reason so many clients today are getting rashes after visiting there. If you are in the New York City metro area, I recommend stopping by 614 8th ave between 38th and 39th and getting a haircut. He's great with tapers, line up's and beards. I honestly think I can sue - just look at the pictures of how they butchered me. I'm worried about HIV and other diseases transferred by blood. The person butchered my neck. In terms of hair I asked for nothing off the top and a 4 on the sides. I got varying degrees of 6 to 4 on EVERYTHING, but with two holes where it was more like a 1 and my bangs were left completely alone (see pictures). Diamond cuts was on the tip of his tongue; he couldn't stop raving about it and told me that it's easily missed since it's on the second floor. Glad he told me that and to go to either Jason, who cut his hair, or Yusef, but said that all the guys in there could cut well. Yusef listened to what I wanted, and kept checking with me throughout to make sure he was headed in the direction I wanted. Mostly done by Moussa who still works there and is a great barber but tried a few other folks the last 2 years and tonight I was in a rush so one of the guys called from the street so figured why not (name ends with y). I was so happy to come across a barbershop full of people equipped to cut black people's hair. Everytime I'm in the vicinity of that place I hear 3 or 4 guys yelling for me to come get a haircut. And even you tell them you have a barber they insist you tell them who like they are the bouncer and you not on the guest list. Once you climb the mountain of steps to the 3rd floor you have about 15 barbers, most actively cutting, to choose from. Pick wisely, and remember who you like. I like Chops in the back corner. They have at all times at least 6-10 barbers working and they are all pretty knowledgable and good at what they do. I typically go with my guy Joe. I was visiting NY for the weekend and needed my side shave redone. I'm not from the area so I went off a recommendation after one shop turned me away. I walked in and didn't have to wait at all. I encountered this place the first week i moved to NYC back in 2009 and my first (and still to this day) barber was Jason. The man knows what he's doing. I have a small thin spot on the right side of my hairline. This was a impromptu haircut decision cause I bumped into Tim who was at the corner of 40th and 8th avenue passing out business cards and promoting the 2nd story barbershop. I was in need of a shape up and took Tim up on his offer to get me in and out in 15 minutes for we were heading to an event about a block away. This was the best unplanned decision I've made about letting a total stranger cut my hair. Needless to say 15 minutes turned into about 35 minutes because Tim and chopped it up as my restless friends waited. I will def be coming back again. After looking hopelessly for a place in lower Manhattan or Midtown that can cut African American hair I finally found a gem. I solely go to Shadow for my cut and even the other barbers agree that nobody can do a fade like him. That being said I know that all of the barbers in the shop can cut. Many of the barbers provide their phone number to call in case you show up to the shop and they are not there. The only issue I have is that theres not a lot of clarity on whether or not they take appointments because every time I text and then show up I still have to wait sometimes. Of course the wait is well worth it! All of my friends who are lawyers and bankers come here because it is a quality cut, relatively cheap ($20 pre-tip) and close to work. Check it out!
