The haircut I received is blatantly uneven--careless, unrefined, and frankly unacceptable by any professional standard. I walked out not just disappointed, but genuinely infuriated and anxious about how I look. What should have been a routine service has now turned into an additional expense and inconvenience, as I'll need to go elsewhere and pay again just to have this mess corrected. Worst Haircut I have Ever Received First, I want to acknowledge that this may be partially my fault. This place gets good reviews, and at least from a visual inspection, and based on what I could hear from the customers, there is a good atmosphere and rapport between Barbers and customers. It may be partially my fault because I walked in without knowing the place, and without an appointment. I asked if they accepted walk-ins. They said yes, I could get a haircut from a certain barber, and they asked me to wait for him. The place got great reviews, it seemed like a good place, so I thought I was good. When my turn came, I sat down for my haircut and as I always do, I looked for a photo I keep on my phone of a bad haircut (photo with light background attached to this review.) I explained to the Barber that I wanted to make sure that I didn't end up with the divots, or holes, on either side of my head that barbers have given me before. Again, I showed him that photo. I asked him to give me a haircut with #2 clippers at the bottom and blend up to #4 clippers near the top. And I said that my hair should have a low blend to make sure that those two holes are avoided. Here's another place where it may be partially my fault. He told me I should use the barber next to me instead of him. But she said to him "No, I have too many appointments." Then my Barber said, "I'm sorry, I don't speak English very well, but I know how to give a haircut." That should have been my cue to get up, say thank you very much, and look for another Barber Shop. But in the moment, I didn't want to be dramatic. And the guy seemed nice. At first, the haircut seemed to be going well. But as he progressed, he started going more and more nuts with the clippers, obviously ignoring or misunderstanding my request to use #4 at the top, and not seeming to know how to do a low blend. Sure enough, I end up with a big divot in my hair. It's not so bad on one side, but drastic on the other. And both sides are clearly way too short near the top, with no blend with the hair on top. Exactly the same problem I've had so many times before. Why is this concept so hard for so many Barbers to understand? With him, it may be that he literally couldn't understand me, but still, it's a common problem at many barbershops. And shouldn't it be he case that when you ask for a regular haircut you don't end up with divots on your head? Shouldn't that be automatically avoided without explanation? I really hesitated to write this bad review. Again, partially because I should have known. Also because my Barber was a nice guy who is perhaps just learning the trade. I don't know. But I feel like people should know: Only use this place if you know the Barbers and know what work they do. I got stuck with somebody who seems to be something like an apprentice, and I ended up with a disastrous haircut. Okay, maybe "disastrous" is too strong a word, because my profession and life don't depend on physical appearance. But since I explained so clearly what I wanted, I feel like a Barbershop charging $45 (not the most expensive Barber for sure, but you can certainly get a better, cheaper haircut in Manhattan) should be able to fulfill a relatively simple, straightforward request. And if an otherwise professional place is giving a beginner a chance, the person should probably be better monitored. read more

I'm a longtime customer - went to them when they were on W22nd St before they moved around the corner to a bigger and roomy space on Eighth Avenue. They do a quality job - I get a traditional haircut, complete with razor shave around the ears and back of neck, with hot towel - consistently well-shaped and stays smooth. I see them do more contemporary cuts on younger customers. I usually get my haircut from Roman, but have used others if it was his day off. Ask for David!!!! I was visiting NYC and needed to get a haircut before a wedding. I'm pretty particular with who cuts my hair and my original barber in NYC retired. I found Manhattan Barber Shop on Booksy and saw DAVID's portfolio. I took my chance and boy oh boy, it was a great cut. Time - David took his time in cutting my hair. He started on the fade and worked his way up. Barber - David was super friendly, real and humble. You can tell he's a straightforward person and does his best to deliver the best cut for anyone and everyone. He's a pretty funny guy too. Price - $35 for men haircut (without tip). I usually get my haircuts for $55-65, so this was on the cheaper end for me. I was left super satisfied and happy. The cut - I asked for a skin fade. The fade was perfect. I have two unique swirls and a bump. A lot of barbers wouldn't know what to do or have challenges, but David was great with his craft. If I'm ever in NYC, I'm booking my cut with David again!!! I called this morning and made an appointment with Maria to dye my beard. I arrived early and waited, selected my color and at 3:04 after making an appointment and waiting 15 min I was told that I would have to wait for her to do a full wash blow and cut on long woman's hair first. Unprofessional and a huge waste of my time I came down from HK for nothing, waste of my time and money Maria was rude and unprofessional. She completely mishandled the situation. read more

I hate to leave reviews, but I guess I have to. I asked the barber to take 1cm off the top. I could tell her wasn't really listening when I said it, but for some reason I ignored my instinct. He proceeds to take 1.5 inches off the top after doing my sides and back. He wasn't really listening to what I wanted and instead thought he knew what to give me. I should have caught this red flag and called it out. I'm really annoyed - #1 instruction for a barber is to listen to your customer. Bad experience and won't be going back. read more

DO NOT GO TO RICKY I spent 5 months growing out my hair and asked for a simple trim and he basically tried to give me a Mohawk Not only that, he scheduled someone else and I had to wait 20 minutes after my scheduled time. The main issue here is that he simply doesn't understand English. You can give him instructions and he will say "si si" and do whatever the f he wants 5 months of work and awkwardness growing this hair out was wasted. This is the my first yelp review, but I had a brutal experience here and wanted to describe what happened. I had Cesar and the instructions were simply .5 on the sides and just a little off the top. He accused me of cutting my own hair and said that I was uncomfortable the second I sat down (as if it to say it was my fault he butchered the haircut.) what I ended with is NOT AT ALL what I had wanted. He asked me after he had already cut half my the hair if this is what I had wanted (he had taken it upon himself to change the style). I blatantly stated that he had already cut the other half and I can't have it uneven. All I wanted was just a little off the top, which was the original instruction. He then brought up again that I was uncomfortable the second I sat down (once again as if to blame me). I do think he realized how awful it looked in the end hence why he was defensive and started to blame me. All-in-all, an awful experience and I'm very grateful for baseball caps. Which was great because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get what was essentially a walk in. I got in and the staff was great. Very friendly. They have become my regular NYC barber shop stop, I am a fan! The Deets: Being that I spend more than a few weekends up in NYC these days, it's important to have a good dependable barber shop to count on. Looking around, I found Manhattan Barber Shop on Yelp. It hasn't disappointed yet, I like these guys. I've hit MBS on and around their opening time of 9am on Saturdays and there has been little to no wait each time. The line, if any, moves efficiently. I've been in three different chairs here and each one of the guys did a great job. It's a no-nonsense classic barber shop experience. Hot towels, warm shaving cream, straight edge razor shaves/cuts...it's all there. Every one has done a great job, very thorough and detailed without taking forever to do it. There is good interaction with your barber without being "over-talkative" and I like that. Also of note is I see a lot of dads take their young sons to MBS and trust them to give their kids a great haircut experience...I think that says a lot for these guys. Prices are definitely reasonable for this area, no qualms with charges for a great haircut here. I am pleased with the outcome each time, and that's the name of the game. read more

Great neighborhood barbershop in chelsea and close by to work. I usually stop in mid morning as the crowds during lunch and afterwards pick up and you'll have to wait. No more needing to travel downtown for my haircut and spending a extra 4.50 on a subway ride. Mike who usually cuts my hair absolutely hits the style that i like. When i first came in i showed him a picture of the style i was going for and 15 min. later my hair was cut to my liking. They even end the haircut with a nice hot towel. Not bad for $17 but always add a tip on top of that. Quick and convenient with no fuss. i'll definitely be back. read more
