I walked into Diamond Jim's pawn looking to get a secured loan for a couple of my diamond rings and a Louis Vuitton handbag. I spoke to a gentleman who was polite and honest, but he told me that unfortunately they don't accept handbags because there isn't enough demand among their customers for them. He quoted me for the rings only and I said I planned to get quotes from a few different places before making a decision. I spent the rest of the day visiting a handful of other pawn shops in the Los Angeles area, and with each one I visited I was increasingly STUNNED by how terrible they were!! All the subsequent shops were visually grimy and dingy... And filled with shady, predatory staff who had no clue the value of my items ... and I swear, each place low balled me worse than the last. Needless to say, hindsight is 20/20 and at the end of the day I was kicking myself for not taking what I now knew was a very generous & fair quote from Jim's! So I went back a day later and the gentleman I originally spoke with wasn't there this time, but I talked to another guy who was very kind and honored the same quote I had been given before. These guys are highly respectable and run their business with compassion and integrity. They make the process very easy and give you peace of mind that your valued belongings will be kept safe and maintained in pristine condition. They kept my rings in individual tamper proof security bags that have unique identification numbers- and they seal it, encourage you to write the number down, and open it right in front of you when you collect your items. The paperwork was quick, clear, & loan terms and interest rates are SO much better than any lending company I've interacted with! They even have a feature to get text notifications about upcoming interest payment dates which eased a lot of my worries. They actually care about their customers, and I am so thankful they were there to help me through a time of financial hardship. Hands down THE best pawn shop, and the only one I'd ever go back to!!! First and 2nd time both such great experience. First time Zhedo helped me with my loan. He was so patient and answered all my questions clearly. I asked him to check a few items for pricing, his excellent customer service never failed. The 2nd time I had Simon helping me and he was exceptional as well. WARNING: ONE-STAR Pawn Shop Shenanigans & How to Survive Your First One Diamond Jim's Pawn Shop (DJPS) feels like a movie set: a throwback to an old '70s store that's dusty, poorly lit and run down. But this isn't a cool soundstage film location starring Oscar winner Cher featuring the masterful music by the late composer Michael Legrand. This experience was subpar--to say the least--one that was filled with sarcasm, utter disregard for a decent customer experience and the young men (the owner's family, apparently) acted like B-movie actors on a new watered down version of "Animal House." (No one will ever outperform John Belushi). Standing alone in casual business attire I was about to experience my first pawnshop outing. I had faith, but it was ultimately filled with nonsense, ridiculed by those behind the counter and an owner that just didn't seem to care ... he left ignoring me with his in-ear buds talking away on his cell phone as he left to run an errand. *WHAT I LEARNED: My mother died several years ago and I have some of her jewelry. That's why I decided to go to a pawn shop. The guys at Jim's Pawn Shop--more retrosexual than metrosexual in their luxury brand urban wear--continuously warned me in my one-hour, in-store experience that I would be subject to being arrested if my items were stolen. *RECOMMENDATION TO DJPS: If you really believe that items are stolen, do the right thing and call the police. Otherwise, you run the risk of looking shady and your remarks become more of a reflection of your business practices. *DON'T MANHANDLE MY JEWELRY: I took several pieces of jewelry; mostly gold. As I placed the pieces on top of the counter, several DJPS employees took a piece each, took off to different parts of the store and began to rub them with their shop "equipment" to see if these were indeed gold. **NOTE: I'm not complaining about the manhandling part as much as the process: several employees jumping in on the action like an "Animal House" cafeteria food fight is simply uncool and confusing. *RECOMMENDATION TO DJPS: Teach your employees (family or not) to be courteous, professional and handle the goods with care. Why? Word of mouth carries. *THE REALITY: Times are tough all over and, as a result, the pawn shop industry tends to thrive when the economy tanks. Logically, more people need cash to survive. However, that doesn't mean pawn shop owners should focus on the desperate consumer. According to the National Pawnbrokers Association, people rely on independent pawnbrokers to help navigate their financial needs. Customers generally represent working families in the U.S., many who suddenly have unexpected needs that require short-term funds. From paying rent to simply fueling cars with gas, Americans often go to pawn shops for loans, according to the NPA, which estimates that there are more than 30 million unbanked or underbanked Americans.
