Not hard to conduct good honest business, took in 2 18k gold chains over 84 grams total weight I asked for a 2500 loan more than fair. One was white gold one was yellow gold. The worker claimed and so swore they were 14k even after testing it he said it marked 14k I know they were 18 I've pawned them before. I took them down the street to another pawn shop right away he knew they were 18k without even testing he then tested and of course they were intact 18k. Needles to say another customer was there with a watch they claimed was not authentic and he was able to also secure a loan on it for 4,000$ at this pawn shop down the street. Don't usually write reviews but this place is horrible. They lie to get you into the store. I talked to one of the worker named Dan over OfferUp and agreed on a transaction. I used to come here to mainly buy DVD's and Blu Rays. They had some cool selections for a good price. I've only stopped visiting like 3-4 years ago. The people who works there were cool, allowed me to take my time browsing through movies without rushing me and would point me to the direction to more DVDs. I liked it there. They play some great tunes on some days. They normally greet me until one day it all change. They see me entering without a 'Hey' and let me do my thing. I guess I've overstayed my welcome? I've never stolen anything from here but it felt like I was under suspicion. Eh. Maybe I'm overthinking? I'd like to make it clear that there were other stores in the area that sold DVD's and I would purchase from them before heading to Brown's. Probably a bad idea. It may appear that I had taken their goods without paying. I would never ever do such thing. Other than that... I've observed the employees there while they were dealing with other customers and they have always showed respect and courtesy to all of them. They have some really neat things that you can get. I have always wanted to get a guitar or a saxophone from them. So yeah.... Give them your business. read more

I'm very limited in my experience visiting and doing business with pawn shops. My first visit was two nights ago. My daughter had some gold to sell (unpaired earrings, broken chains, etc.) so she had me go with her to Durfee Pawn Shop in South El Monte. The establishment was very tiny and, compared to Brown's, not a lot of merchandise. But the two gentlemen behind the counter were friendly, welcoming, and funny! I figured, with the items I had to sell (cultured pearls-a matching necklace, bracelet, earrings, and a ring) I might have better luck at a bigger business. I wasn't expecting a lot of money at all. But pearls aren't my thing (they were a gift) and I just wanted to have someone take them off my hands and, maybe, make a little extra money. I did some research on which shop to try and, after reading the reviews for this business, I bookmarked it and paid them a visit. One of the reviewers even stated "staff is friendly and treats you like family". I love good customer service and feeling "like family"! If this went well ("well' meaning getting rid of the jewelry and having a small amount of cash in my pocket), I would write a great review (which I love doing), refer family and friends and maybe even do business with them again. (I had brought my son with me. The store, from the pictures posted, looked huge! Nice, clean, with a variety of merchandise. He's in a band and I thought, aside for the moral support, he might see something he'd need for some gigs he and his band had coming up and would want to make a purchase. They had guitars, amps, etc.) When I first walked in I didn't feel welcomed AT ALL. Was it my appearance? I had been getting over a cold so I wasn't looking my best. As soon as i walked in I was promptly directed ("barked at" might be a harsh term but it's what comes to mind) further down their massive counter. I approached the young man with my usual smile, greeted him and started to let him know what I had to sell. He spoke over his shoulder to the lady who had first directed me (an owner?), asking her, "Pearls? What do we do with pearls? (paraphrasing)" (I thought they bought and sold jewelry - I figured, what I had was jewelry, right?) The woman approached, looking irritated, opened my box and was already shaking her head at the items inside. I don't want to say she was sneering, but the look on her face was more than irritation. She pulled out a string of pearls/necklace from the box and said, (paraphrasing), "So, what are you looking to get for this?(*exasperated sigh*) I told her where they were purchased (Kay Jewelers according to the gift boxes and verified on their website) and told her I honestly had no idea what to ask for or expect. I continued with what I had seen on the website and how they were described, etc. but that I really just wanted to get rid of them. With another irritated sigh, she continued, "...more than a hundred? Because you're not even going to get that...... You're better off with a private seller." With that, she put the necklace back in the box, closed the lid, pushed it back towards me and I was dismissed. The car ride to their establishment took longer than my whole experience inside. I was "dealt" with and out the door in about 5 minutes. I felt embarrassed and stupid. I did NOT feel like family. Were they "honest and fair" as another reviewed stated? Maybe. Probably. I should have done research on selling pearls. I wouldn't have left my house! If I have a bad experience at a business, I really do wrestle with posting a negative review. I don't want someone's livelihood to suffer because of something I put out there on the internet. But by the looks of their store, their 50+ years in the business, the amount of merchandise they had in stock the day of my visit, I'm sure this one review won't hurt them. When we got back into my car and my son said, "I wonder if she meant to be that crabby (not the actually word he used)?" I realized, first, it wasn't just me being sensitive. Second, I can deal with being treated like an idiot even though, as i write this, it still stings. But never will I let my children witness or be recipients of such crappy, negative customer service. With that being said, I'm off to give 5 stars to Durfee Pawn (and visit Ebay and see what cultured pearls are going for......). read more

I called in to ask if they buy vinyl records, to which the employee answered "not really." He then proceeded to let me know that a record store in Hollywood will buy them and advised me to check the value of my items before selling it to them. I have been buying jewelry from Brown's since 20003. I keep going back because of the fantastic selection of jewelry, designer handbags, tools and interesting white elephants. The customer service is exceptional, they are friendly, knowledgeable and flexible on their prices. Lori has such an eye for design. I just recently fell in love with an antique diamond and ruby pin. I don't wear pins so she suggested that her contact in DT LA could make it into a slide for my omega collar, I never would have thought of the. I also give her my silver to have rhodium plated so it will never tarnish. I also go back and forth with yellow gold plating my white gold and vice-a-versa. If I break anything you can take it to her to send out to get fixed. I have been shopping pawn shops all over LA for over 40 years but Brown's is one place I have to go to monthly. read more

I went here after it being recommended to me to sell a ring I found. The guy behind the counter told me the diamond was fake (I just got told it was real by an upstanding 35 year veteran jeweler in Pasadena and just came from him and offered him the card to call the jeweler). He looked at it scoffed and told me he'd give me 22 bucks for it. I went to Daniel's in the Arcadia mall and they appraised the ring at over $750. The tool's they had in the shop were WAY over priced (I saw a set of Blue point wrenches for $400 that I can get brand new from the Snap on guy for less than half that). Not only the wrenches but he had a sawzall in there that was well used (case all beat up and the cord had electrical tape on it) for $325. Come one. I can get a new one (better than the 13 amp one he had) for $200. This place is a ripoff. He just wanted to make a quick buck off my find. read more

Purchased an Omega SeaMaster GMT from Brown's a couple months ago. Loved the watch and everything seemed fine with the watch but after careful observation found that there was an issue with the GMT complication that would happen once in a while. Something that would not have shown up in a normal inspection. Took it back to them and asked if they could do anything about it. Without hesitation, they said they would take it to the watch technicians they use in L.A. and get it repaired for me. I was astonished when it came back; they did not charge me for the extra repair even though I was prepared to pay for it. The watch is perfect now and they have earned a loyal customer. read more

I was here hoping to get a good price for my gold necklace. The lady who wears glasses at the counter was the most rudest person I've ever met!
