Incredibly enticing smells! Loads of breads, pastries, cookies, muffins, empanadas, churros and other delightful offerings. I got a pumpkin empanada and a caramel churro. The empanada was tasty, but grease leached all the way through the little brown bag. The pastry/filling ratio big-time favored the pastry. I prefer more filling. The caramel churro was doughy, and I didn't taste the caramel at all. I'm sure I'm missing something on this Mexican pastry thing. read more

Great Mexican bakery on Cherokee. Unlike most bakeries, Diana's stays open until 8PM on the Thursday I was there. This shop has a great selection on baked goods; from multiple flavors of churros, flan, and triple leche cake. The prices seem fair and the food is fresh. I also enjoyed the samples at the counter. This shop is worth checking out when you're in the area. It's located in the heart of Cherokee and is a great place to get dessert after a meal. read more

This place is definitely "good" but I don't think it's "amazing" by any means. Maybe I'm just a baked goods snob or something but....is it just me or do 99% of their cookies taste exactly the same no matter if they are chocolate, vanilla, or some other combination of colors (food dye?) and chocolate chips? I felt like they should have tasted of almond extract or something but no. Really bland, really tasteless. I will say it's a good deal though--I had about 5 or 6 different items and my total was around $8 or so. Not too bad. If you have a lot of friends to feed or you're getting pastries for your office or something, it would be a good idea to hit this place up plus they're open every day of the week which is awesome. A lot of places close on Sundays! My favorite item oddly enough was their chocolate cupcake. It was not the best cupcake I'd ever had in my life but it was definitely A-OK. The cookies weren't stale but they were definitely hard and crunchy. I prefer my cookies soft and chewy so maybe that's why I am not a big fan. I tried a cinnamon twist donut looking thing and it was good but it wasn't very soft. Not sure if that was by mistake or design. Maybe they're good at what they do (and that's making traditional Mexican pastries) but I am just not a huge fan. I guess maybe with all of the 4 and 5 star reviews I had my expectations built up and what I actually got was a huge letdown by comparison. IDK. I think I'd only come back here if I am in the neighborhood....it's really not a great neighborhood but if I liked the baked goods here, I'd probably go out of my way to return. I never thought I'd say this but I think I like the pastries better at Black Bear. I did like the tongs and tray method, btw. I love Diana's Bakery. I am seriously upset that I haven't stopped in sooner. We went to Diana's on a Saturday morning to get tamales. I am pretty sure they only make them on Saturdays, so stock up! We got 6 of the red and 6 of the green, both were pork-filled. I preferred the green, but definitely enjoyed the red too. They were great and were perfect reheated for lunch throughout the week. The vanilla filled churros were heavenly. They had such a light and crispy cinnamony-sugary exterior with a luscious vanilla-y center. I am in love. The tres leches cake was to die for too. I have already notified my boyfriend that I really really really hope I get a tres leches cake from Diana's for my birthday... in March. :) There really isn't anywhere to sit, so it's definitely a to-go type spot. It just so happens churros are the perfect to-go food, so it works out perfectly. read more

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I think this place operates solely on the style over substance variety. While everything is very pretty inside the flavor leaves much to be desired. It's sort of the Italian cookie school of baking, everything tastes almost exactly the same but the shape and color differ from item to item. This process leaves one with something that looks great but is a bland experience from bite to bite. I figured maybe it was just a fluke, but I went back a couple weeks after my first visit and got a couple different items, including a chocolate chip cookie this time. I'm a complete nut about chocolate chip cookies and even I couldn't find myself finishing the massive one I had snagged. The staff was quite nice and the layout was neat and manageable, but as the old saying goes "A man can't eat on a display and politeness alone... or at all." Mmmm... churros. I was driving a friend around town for the 3 hrs she was stuck in STL and decided we should go to Diana's Bakery. What a great idea that was! My friend had an 8 hr bus ride ahead of her and i had a sweet tooth. We ended up getting 2 whole bags of baked goods. I can't remember what she got, but I loved everything I got. n First of all, they have CHURROS! So many different flavors of churros. I grabbed 3: caramel, vanilla, and something else. All were superb and my bf ate most of them. I also got a pastry thing filled with a wonderful vanilla filling. Om nom nom. And lastly, I got a really tasty loaf of yellow colored bread. OPENS AT SIX AM. If you go early in the morning, they have fresh trays of all their pastries lined up throughout the store in the center. You can't go wrong with any of the pan dulces, they're all delicious. Later in the week they also offer amazing tamales but you have to go earlier or they'll sell out. I stopped at Diana's Bakery for the first time on a Friday afternoon because I had heard they sell great tamales. They had pork with salsa rojo or salsa verde. I chose the salsa verde. They were hot and it was too bad I couldn't eat them immediately but I had just eaten lunch. The pastries in the store are beautiful. The colors and the smell of fresh baked goods = yum. I selected a chocolate chip cookie, a pink cookie with coconut, a caramel churro, and an apple churro. The churros were A-MAZING. The cookies are not my thing. Other reviewers have mentioned that they are dry and not sweet. The truth is they are exactly as they should be. My American palette just isn't a fan of them. They look great though! On to the tamales which I was able to try the following day. SO GOOD! My only complaint would be more filling and a little less masa but seriously the flavor is so great. The pork is tender and the salsa verde has the perfect amount of heat. The tamales reheated nicely and I can tell this is going to be a new favorite. I am going to be the weird woman who stops in to hoard their churros and tamales! I need to try every flavor of the churros and I need to try the tamales with the salsa rojo. read more

Was down there for Halloween building altares and needed some snacks.......luckily it was the weekend and they had Pork tamales left with salsa rojo.........Oh Dear Baby Jesus......thanks for giving them the time to make this wonderful work of art for the tongue. They had ran out but the worker who was extremely busy took the time to call someone in a location unknown to the customers to get more in stock. Not sure where her counter part came from, but it was close, quick, and they were hot and fresh. Sold in packs of 6 and every bit worth it for like a $1 a piece. Do not leave w/o buying! Do not salt them before trying the masa is excellent and the over all taste heaven even when cold. These tasty lil treats were created by the Mayan, Aztecs and Incas as portable food for their warriors. Well I'm no fighter but I'm a foodie and TE AMO TAMALES DE DIANA'S MUY MUY MUCHO. Are you joking? ! This place is using ready made mixes full of chemicals. You could see the unnatural, fluorescent colors and taste the artificial ingredients. Yes, the variety and price of the goods are both impressive. You could find many bakeries as Diana ' s in any big city as they use the same mixes. (Plenty in Chicago ). read more

Real old school pandaria - brings me back to the ones I visited when I lived near Clark Street in Chicago. Walk in, grab a tray and tongs and go to town. I always end up with more than I meant to get but they had a huge variety. Traditional pan dulce, donuts, danishes, churros, even a croissant or two. Everything was extremely fresh, cheap and tasty. Kids weren't huge fans of the churros, but they weren't warm by the time I got them home, and they ate them too fast to warm them up, so that may have been an issue. Prices ran from 70 cents to $1.50 with my six (I said I overbought!) pastries coming in under $6. What a great alternative to donuts or cupcakes when you are looking for fresh baked goods. They also had fresh bolillo rolls - so keep it in mind if you are looking for an alternative to your typical sandwich roll. I look forward to returning and sampling more of their options. read more

It has everything I want from a bakery. I grew up in La Villita in Chicago where there were tons of Mexican bakeries. Most mornings I woke up eating abuelita's hot chocolate and conchas. They also have torta bread. I leave there with a sack full of stuff for 3 dollars. Awesome. The only thing I don't like are the churros (because they are not soft enough for me) and the fact that the tamales are only sold in a pack of six. read more

I, too, feel a little strange giving Diana's such a low rating. Walking in, your senses are on complete overload with the smell and look of the things dreams are made of. Except, these things are not what dreams are made of. We got a chocolate chip studded cookie that tasted like a piece of cardboard, an unfilled chocolate long john that was super doughy and bland, and some sort of gigantic, multicolored cream horn. Neither one of us had more than one bite which was immediately followed by a trip to the trash can. Even hungover, we couldn't find the goodness. A friend said months ago I had to go here and when eating next door at Athlete Eats, how could I not go in after my lunch? Nothing fancy about Diana's and at first I wasn't quite sure it was open, despite a sign that said it was but after a double check, I walked in (windows are fairly covered). Immediately you are surrounded by pastries on both sides in tall cases that made it easy to see what was available. And as usual when around sweets, I had to buy more than i could eat. I can't tell you the exact names of what I bought other than a plain turnover (was still tasty) but I bought some triangle fruit filled pies, a cream filled donut, and a couple of other items. This is old style bakery stuff, nothing fancy but still of good quality. read more

Wow this is a truly awesome Mexican bakery on Cherokee Street. Immediately after walking in you're surrounded by cases of all sorts of baked goods. Try the empanadas, the guava is my favorite and in the fall pumpkin is delicious. Grab a churro, or a few, they even have flavored kinds. There's so much more in here, I don't know what everything is called but from my experience everything I've had is good. Everything is also just so cheap, it's hard to walk out spending more than $10 even with the tray of goods you're bound to collect. Diana's is a real gem on Cherokee. read more

I stumbled upon Diana's by accident one summer day. Thank goodness. It's a tiny little gem that's easy to miss down on Cherokee street. When you walk in the door, your senses are immediately called to attention by the sweet-smelling, colorful pastries that literally surround you. I love that you just grab a tray and fill it with whatever you please from the always full shelves. As far as the pastries go, you really can't go wrong. Yesterday was my birthday and I was dying to have tres leches as my cake of choice, so a quick Google search brought me in to this place. As soon as I walked in, the place spelled like heaven. As an admitted sugar addict it took everything in my power to just get the tres leches cuz there was so much pastry all around and it all looked so good! The cake itself was freaking delish (not too sweet...just how I like it!) and only $25. The lady at the counter was hella nice, too. I took a leisurely stroll down to Diana's after my brunch at Black Bear Bakery. I heard about their churros, and I knew I had to try them; I haven't had a GOOD churro since my last visit to California. I didn't see any signage outside of Diana's (if there was a sign in the past, it's gone now), so I just kind of opened the door with the correct address and I was luckily in the right place. It's a small place, but it's crammed with tons of pastries. Some of them are marked, and some aren't. If you need help, the woman working there was super friendly. While a few other goodies caught my eye, I was there for one thing and one thing only: the churros! They have plain and caramel. I'm a churro purist (is there such a thing?) so I went with plain. It was tasty! Lots of cinnamon and sugar all over it. My only complaint? It didn't seem super fresh; it was sort of tough and chewy, not soft and pillowy like the churros I remember from years ago. Anyway, Diana's is someplace I would definitely come back to. I really can't wait to try more of the baked goods! read more

Where to start, hmm, I would say the empanadas of any flavor will be a great selection for anyone . the service here is absolutely great, with friendly morning faces. I really can't even touch base on how much variety they have. Just go in and try to find something you won't like , that would be a hard task. As far as the neighborhood goes , its just fine, a little rough maybe but not as bad as people make it out to be. Diana's is truly a Hidden Gem! She's producing high-end Bakery goods from tres leche cakes to a simple sugar donut and everything in between! The quality speaks for itself in every bite. You can feel the love and pride in every item. We first stumbled upon this place during the festival about 5 years ago and I still make special trips to St Louis just for a vanilla filled churro, or a strawberry baby roll! If you're ever in the Cherokee Street and Arsenal area, swing in and grab a treat, you will not be disappointed. The staff are always friendly and helpful as well. They are now serving up, believe it or not, homemade tamales which are to die for. There are four different flavors and you can't go wrong with either one of them. The Masa in them are perfectly moist and tender and the pork or chicken with green salsa or red salsa are perfectly flavored and season. I feel strange giving Diana's a low rating since so many others seem to love the place, but I'd rather be honest than conventional. Walking into the bakery, you will be overwhelmed by the wooden cabinets filled with pastries, and the smell of freshly-baked goodies will delight your nostrils. If you are like me, however, you will find the flavor in most of the baked goods lacking. Everything tastes approximately the same, and anything covered with lurid yellow or pink icing seems stale and dry. I've been twice and don't recall what all I purchased the first time around, except that I bought a large amount of items in an effort to try a bit of everything. For the most part, I was disappointed; one or two of the cream-filled treats (a cream horn was perhaps among them) was passable. On my second visit, I picked up a slice of peach tres leches cake, and was dismayed to find it bland and tasteless, and too dry for my liking. Stay away from the chocolate chip-studded cookies unless you enjoy the complex flavor and texture of cardboard. I'd like to go back and try the churros and tamales, since they seem to be highly esteemed; I hope to update the rating favorably, but if the other bakery items are any indication, I will be let down. At least the prices are fair. read more
