Sadly, the Brown Cow is closed for construction, so we missed out. We had already found parking, so instead of buying ice cream, we went treasure hunting next door. We had a lot of fun moving from one vendor area to the next as we worked our way around the store. It is very, very full of merchandise, but didn't feel super cramped. It would be harder to navigate if you are a larger size or if you need a walker or wheel chair. The aisles and vendor set-ups are narrow, so it does take some patience and balance to maneuver in and around. But everything is clean and well organized, so big plus there. And there is a massive amount of unique things. Smelled fine, too, not stuffy or smoky. The owner was walking around with a spray bottle, tidying up. Owners and customers all wore masks. 6-foot distancing marks are on the floor and additional signs are all around the shop, reminding shoppers about COVID precautions, which was appreciated. I think this would be a fun place to go on a masked, socially-distanced date! Ice cream + treasure hunting.

I even found two that had a different finish on them. He was able to match the finish on the chairs, I can't even tell which were the odd ones! The table and chairs were all taken apart and re-glued, so sturdy now! Just a joy to use! He sent me pictures when the table was stripped to confirm the color of finish I wanted. He completed the job when he said he would.

Diane had us come into her booth (the shop is a smaller space inside a larger antique mall) and and briefly remove our masks for the camera (this is a jewelry shop, after all). We did go to a few other jewelry stores in the western suburbs, all pretty standard. They all had a few vintage rings, but nowhere near the selection of The Gold Hatpin. We had plenty to look at and Diane was great at listening & educating us. This was helpful because my fiancee & I *thought* we knew what we wanted but there were a couple factors we hadn't considered & her input was very helpful. Along those same lines, she was not pushy in the least. Many other "basic" jewelry stores wanted to source rings from other places, construct a "vintage looking" ring, etc & we got the feeling that we were dealing with a used car salesman at times. The Economy Shop is literally a Victorian style house with every room crammed with secondhand goods and antiques. They're only open 3-4 days a month from 9am-3pm, so you need to plan your visit. When you enter, you're handed a paper sheet that is divided into different categories of merchandise. When you go to each room, they total up whatever you want to buy from that given room. When you're completely done shopping, you pay at the far back of the house and exit. Prices are fair and you can find some great stuff here. The basement was one area that was overwhelming. Almost too much to look at and fully absorb. Tips for first time visitors: 1. Bring reusable bags or a tote bag. They will give you bags but a good sturdy bag will work to your advantage. 2. Parking is tricky. You're fine on residential streets but if you park along the train tracks, you have to feed a meter. $2.00 per hour. Card payment only. 3. Leave small kids at home. The rooms and hallways are too packed and tight to reasonably manage kids in tow. I like this place! I will be back!
