Sadly, the Brown Cow is closed for construction, so we missed out. We had already found parking, so instead of buying ice cream, we went treasure hunting next door. We had a lot of fun moving from one vendor area to the next as we worked our way around the store. It is very, very full of merchandise, but didn't feel super cramped. It would be harder to navigate if you are a larger size or if you need a walker or wheel chair. The aisles and vendor set-ups are narrow, so it does take some patience and balance to maneuver in and around. But everything is clean and well organized, so big plus there. And there is a massive amount of unique things. Smelled fine, too, not stuffy or smoky. The owner was walking around with a spray bottle, tidying up. Owners and customers all wore masks. 6-foot distancing marks are on the floor and additional signs are all around the shop, reminding shoppers about COVID precautions, which was appreciated. I think this would be a fun place to go on a masked, socially-distanced date! Ice cream + treasure hunting.

Diane had us come into her booth (the shop is a smaller space inside a larger antique mall) and and briefly remove our masks for the camera (this is a jewelry shop, after all). In COVID times, precautions were in place, followed & reasonable (Masks, plastic screens at counter). Diane was very polite, professional & helpful. We did go to a few other jewelry stores in the western suburbs, all pretty standard. They all had a few vintage rings, but nowhere near the selection of The Gold Hatpin. We had plenty to look at and Diane was great at listening & educating us. This was helpful because my fiancee & I *thought* we knew what we wanted but there were a couple factors we hadn't considered & her input was very helpful. Along those same lines, she was not pushy in the least. Many other "basic" jewelry stores wanted to source rings from other places, construct a "vintage looking" ring, etc & we got the feeling that we were dealing with a used car salesman at times. Diane was none of that & truly a pleasure to work with. We can't recommend Diane and The Gold Hatpin enough.

My very rare 5 star review…read more I absolutely love a great antique mall, especially one that is well organized with so many unique booths and treasures that you could easily forget about every other shop. I was especially impressed when I saw they advertised Chicago street signs on their Facebook page. I quickly called and asked if they could please hold one for me, and to my surprise, they did. That was a big deal to me because many antique malls will not hold items. Even better, when I arrived, the sign was still available and I was able to purchase it for the exact price I was quoted. For that, I was truly grateful. The only downside of my visit was that the store was very crowded, so I did not get the chance to keep browsing the way I wanted to. I had every intention of spending more money, but my $100+ purchase was enough for the day. Overall, this is an awesome shop, and I honestly think I just found my new favorite antique mall!

The place seemed very dingy, dusty, cluttered, and worst of all, very poorly lit. The establishment obviously doesn't encourage their dealers to keep their booths clean and orderly. Many booths were set up haphazardly, with tripping hazards on the floor. Also, much of the merchandise was run-of-the-mill garage sale items that didn't justify the high prices. I have no intention of ever returning.

It is a little pricy depending what you're interested in. When we went, lots of the booths featured Christmas decorations. I fell in love with a beautiful retro Santa. He will bring magic and merriment to our home each holiday season starting next year (my husband wouldn't let me have my present early, or Santa would be proudly on display this year too lol). Everything I looked at was in good condition, especially considering how old some of the items were. I was hoping to see more vintage clothes and housewares, so I'll have to go back after the holidays to see what they put out. Staff was friendly and helpful. I'll be back soon I'm sure.

There was a broken doll on the floor, and one of the staff members kept following me and asked if I was the one who broke it. I told them no, but then two staff members continued following me around, demanding that I pay for it and threatening to call the police. Their behavior was very intimidating, and I ended up crying in front of them while asking them to stop treating me that way. I truly felt profiled and discriminated against during the entire situation. Afterward, I posted a Google review and tried many times to contact the manager, but my calls never resolved anything. Eventually, their lawyer contacted me and asked me to remove the review, saying they would have the staff go through training. However, that did not resolve the harm that was done, because the experience left me traumatized.
