This place is FANTASTIC! Right upon entering, you get the delicious scent of good barbecue and some of the most friendly employees I've found anywhere. Seriously- I've been here twice and everyone seems so full of gusto and good vibes! Everything on the menu is incredible, I can't really pick a favorite. I do know that the Mac n cheese comes from reesers (spelling?). It is delicious, though! I like to stick to the stuff made in house so I go with the crispy onion straws. Spicy BBQ sauce for the win- don't forget to get a big yellow cup to use at home.. Oh, and did I mention free self serve I've cream at the end of your meal?! I would rank this as a zero if possible. The customer service was bad, the lady that worked in drive thru had an attitude and gave the impression that the only reason she is there is cause she is on work release or parole. The food we ordered was sloppy, I ordered a frito pie with brisket chili, it ended up being mostly beans and hardly any brisket and the Fritos were super soggy. My husband ordered the beef brisket plain and some okra on the side. They threw the brisket which looked like scraps in a cup with lid and added a sauce on the top. This was a piss poor effort from this Dickey's. I had Dickeys before in Colorado and it was great and I thought those same standards would be here, but wrong. So take caution if you eat here you have been warned. read more

Dickeys is my favorite restaurant. I love everything about it. Typically I get their fried okra or baked potato casserole sides with whatever meat I feel like eating that day. Their Mac stacks are also amazing and so are their Bakers (giant baked potatoes with toppings). Love the big cups changing colors by month recently. I missed the pink one in October and I was so mad. Good thing yellow is my favorite color download the app too so you can start getting points. If I ever need to cater this will be my place. Pretty good chain affair in a location where there isn't a whole lot to choose from. Closely located to the Holiday Inn and Suites (walking distance). The food was good and filling. Brisket was smoked well, sausage was forgettable, onion straws and spinach to round it out. Budweiser to wash it down. Liked the free DIY ice cream machine against the wall. I wasn't expecting to be berated by the employee for ordering in his behalf. Apparently the employee knows everything about how to properly parent my child. A few notes to put this review in context: 1. I usually do not review any place until I have been at least twice, but this place is a chain and I ate at the one that was briefly open in Overland Park, so I think I can fairly review it, and 2. I am a Kansas City Barbecue Society Master BBQ judge and ate at Q39 on Saturday. If you are used to competition style BBQ, or are familiar with the quality of Kansas City restaurants like Joe's Kansas City or Q39, you will find Dickey's of Topeka a huge disappointment. Having said that though, I have been to all the other BBQ places in Topeka, and by Topeka standards, Dickey's isn't too bad. I went for lunch and had a two-meat plate with brisket and sausage. It came with two sides. I chose cole slaw and a Caesar salad. The sausage was about a half link and was tasty and well-cooked, although a little on the salty side. It was great dunked into some of Dickey's spicy sauce, which wasn't overly spicy, but had a nice little tingle. The serving of brisket was two hand-cut slices, which looked pretty promising until the server cut into it and it crumbled under the knife indicating that it was WAY overcooked. It was piled onto the plate looking more like shredded beef than brisket slices. It could have used some more rub and smoke as it was a bit on the bland side, but tasted ok. Texture-wise, it only gets a 4 or 5 on the 9-point scale for tenderness. The sides were adequate, but with rare exceptions you don't go to a BBQ place for sides. Lunch cost me about $15.50, but the portion size was pretty generous and you could easily be satisfied with a one meat plate a little cheaper. The ambiance was what you would expect from a chain - institutional. The place seemed clean enough and the people friendly. Service was quick and efficient. Overall, not too bad for Topeka. read more

The smell outside is enough to make just about anyone's mouth water. Inside is casual and laid back - and smells even better. This is one of our quick lunch spots and we've been there a half-dozen times. The pulled pork sandwich is plenty - add in a side order of anything to split between my husband and myself and we're stuffed. Get a full meal and you'll be rolling out. This is fast-food barbecue. Not rock-your-boots incredible, but will satisfy if you need a fix. And, the free ice cream at the end of the meal doesn't hurt either. My one main complaint is the ordering counter is way too tall. I'm 5'2" and I feel like I'm peeking over the edge to talk to they guys back there and I feel like I have to yell at them for them to hear me over the tall glass - so, my 6'2" tall husband usually does the ordering. :) Problem solved. But, I doubt I'd go here alone and try to dine, because of that. read more

Hot, fresh and fast. One harsh review compared to McDonalds. Wow. I would suggest that compared to other BBQ in town, they are wicked fast. But the meat is cooked, as are sides, except fries. Why do the other places take 10-15 mins to get 2-3 plates done? Dickeys line is just fast. I've been a BBQ Judge and while they can be critiqued on technical issues, their meats and sides taste DAMN GOOD. You can see right into the kitchen. It's clean. It smells clean. Not something that can be said of every BBQ joint. I'm not really big on arguing about the price of good food. I've eat at perhaps 20-25 different BBQ places over the last decade and would say they are priced on the lower end of good BBQ. They don't have a dollar menu or $2 pressed ribblet sandwich. You'll have to head over to the arches if that's your thing. Highly recommended. read more

Always get great service when we go there. Prices are reasonable, especially on Sundays when the kiddos eat free. Tried their new Pulled Pork Tacos yesterday and they were AMAZING. Well, I must agree this is basically a fast food meets BBQ place. The seating and ordering is set up like a fast food place. The place is still new though here. Food is okay, not great. Rather pricey for what you get. Went here since they have a special on pulled pork sandwiches $1 each on Mondays for the next month. However, I would not pay $5 for the sandwiches. For sides, the waffle fries where meh, but the fried okra was decent. For $1.50, the okra was worth it (got a lot), but the fries really weren't. The drinks are quite expensive though, at $2, although you get a plastic cup so you can let everybody know you paid $2 for a drink at Dickey's. I guess in summary, this is basically what you would get from a chain BBQ place. BBQ is one of those styles that simply doesn't work as a chain restaurant. While the fast food could work, the way the meats are cooked don't lend themselves to being easily replicable. Other than getting in on decent specials, this is probably not a place I would go to very often. read more

The one thing that really turned me off was the price of a baked potato. ..$ 7.95. Come on. They said there a really BIG potatoes ...right. So that means there cost factor went from .22 for a medium potato to .29 cents for a large. Who are they kidding. If you really want good BBQ you'll find a local mom and pop place. This location has provided me and my family MANY instances of RUDE customer service, and SUB-PAR dining experiences. If you have eaten at other Dickey's Restaurants, don't think this will be like any positive experiences you may have had with them. We recently moved to KS from IN, and often ate at the Dickey's in Schererville, IN (they were awesome), this is not. A couple of the frustrations that we've experienced at this location: 1) Very impersonal/rude tones from the employees when placing/receiving our orders. 2) They have a very "odd" way of administrating their "customer loyalty" program. When we ate the Dickey's in IN, every time we came in and ordered a plate or sandwich, we had our "Big BBQ Loyalty" card stamped. Here, we are told that you only can get your card stamped if you order a Big BBQ Sandwich, and only a Big BBQ Sandwich. Even if you order a 2-Meat or Rib plate, they will not stamp your card....ridiculous. 3) Some days you are allowed to order your meat in 1/2 lbs. quantities, and on other days you are told that the minimum weight is 1lbs. ... inconsistency. I guess some of these things wouldn't be as big of deals if they were accompanied by pleasant demeanors; however, they are not. Customer service is not their top priority. read more
