It's a cool dive, kind of a laid back place that I like. On top of that, the view just out the door is amazing. They've got the usual beers, then the popular California beers (bear republic!), and lots of wall mounted TVs playing various sports. I'm not a sports fan myself, but my man was able to catch one of the western conference finals while I enjoyed the beer and the view. The bartender had kind of a Vince Vaughn/Ben Affleck vibe going and he was friendly. I didn't feel the "out of towners" unwelcome attitude some people are talking about here. What more can I say? Mendocino is a brilliant little town, no gutter punk North Coast sadness, booming local tourism without loss of the small town feel. It is hard not to imagine living up here and residing in a natural ease. My euphoric buzz from Patterson's pub was polished and shined with a night cap here during the Mendocino Music Festival (think symphony and less dirty hairball). This place was going off with locals, tourist and orchestra members in tuxes getting hammered and dancing to shitty 80's tunes. Old large and simple this place would be awesome for day drinking as well. Basically a great fucking time. read more

Yep its definitely a dive for loco-ls. They got a nice mix of age groups in here. Some nights they feature DJs and it can get a little funky. My friends swear the Bloody Mary on a Saturday afternoon is the must have. I was happy with the beers on tap, darts, and liar's dice. Also you can order food, like a prime rib sandwich, from the nearby hotel restaurants and they will walk it down. Not too shabby. read more

I have a thing for bars that have been around for decades and decades and decades, outlaw cell phone conversations, and have awesome patrons and bartenders. Dick's Place is that place in Mendocino. My boyfriend and I stopped in after tooling around Mendocino on a weekend trip. Dick's Place is small, but it has an ATM, a jukebox, darts and pinball. It also has several flat-screen TVs to catch the game. The bartender was friendly to us out-of-towners even with a bar full of locals to keep her busy. The locals were friendly and had some great tips for places to go and things to do. Ironically, no one was a dick in Dick's. A nice change after our mediocre experience at Fort Bragg's Tip Top bar where there were actually too few Richards and too many Dicks. read more

Agreed. This is a solid neighborhood-style dive bar in an otherwise artsy tourist town. Fair price for decent pour of Makers Mark. But.... Tables need cleaning. Basics for making standard drink like an Old Fashioned were unavailable. I would go back but only for a beer. read more

My wife found this on some list as the Dive Bar with the best view in the US, so naturally we had to grab a drink here while in Mendocino. Definitely lives up to that reputation, great view facing south over the bluffs. Friendly staff with fairly stiff drinks. Pretty cool local vibe here, definitely not many tourists like us ventured in. They have an awesome miniature model of the bar that is stunningly accurate. It was my dad's 50th Birthday so we took him for a shot at dicks. The prices were not bad and it seemed like a cool place to just sit back and watch. The bar tender is strict about checking IDs, but he did let my aunt's dog into the bar. He was nice enough to take a picture for us and chat. I would come back to Dicks. It seems like a place with such a character. Just don't forget your ID...or your dog. read more

It's all about the bloody mary's at Dick's! I'm from the Mendo coast, and as a child felt a shiver of fear whenever I walked by Dick's on a Sunday afternoon and heard/saw all the crazy locals inside/outside...honestly nothing like the fear I felt whenever I walked by the Tip Top in Fort Bragg hahaha. Now, however, I embrace Dick's like most local kids have come to. There's always the typical array of Mendo locals here, and there are lots of cool old pictures on the walls. So anyway, if you only have one drink at Dick's, make sure it's a bloody. They're too die for. They put in all the veggies, and they make their own mix. Dill is the secret ingredient as far as I can tell, but I've never been able to duplicate the deliciousness at home. read more

This place kind of reminds me of the old adage, "If it weren't for all these damn customers, this job would be great." The bar is classic in decor and the music in the jukebox is good. I had ordered a Crown Royal and Coke and have no idea what was actually served; it certainly wasn't Crown?!?. Too bad the hipster bartender couldn't muster energy to show an ounce of kindness when I came in on a quiet evening. Oddly enough, it seemed he went out of his way to show disapproval. To feel unwelcome by the bartender, on top of going through some heavy life-stuff, was a bummer. I sensed he marked me as "not local" and wanted to send a clear message. I got the message. I was planning on hanging out a bit, maybe make some new friends, take my mind off things. Instead, I finished my drink quickly, and left. I get it, all our secret spots have been blown up by social media posts and by annoying tourists and posers. I'm not one of those people. I'm also a "local". Just not in Mendocino. A good bartender uses discernment. Yours uses bad judgement. And is just plain rude. Be kind. You never know what someone's going through. Addendum: The more time I spend in Mendocino, the more I'm learning from people who live here that Dick's is known for being dicks. Sounds like Patterson's is the friendly locals and out-of-towners joint. read more

This was one of the bars we frequented twice on my wedding weekend. I can't comment on the drinks since I only had water -- didn't want to have a hangover before my wedding. Our crowd of english blokes rated this place higher than Pattersons -- they liked the jutebox and live music. I think Pattersons was too tame for them. This bar definitely has the gritty, local feel. We were fortunately to hear a fun band play on Thursday night - the people were friendly and the place wasn't overly crowded. Friday was definitely much more busy - half and half on friendliness from the locals. I think some were fed up with our party since we had quite a few people from our wedding. I love a good dive and Dicks Place ranks top shelf of the dive bars in my book. My best friend and I spent a couple of days in town for work and decided to go check out the scene. On the recommendation of our server at dinner we spent Fat Tuesday at Dicks with a largely local crowd. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, we left with a stack of Mardi Gras beads (no indecent exposure required.) The music was loud, but not too loud. The decor is fun. The mural of the mermaid breastfeeding the sea life on the wall near the restrooms left an impression on my girlfriend. Our bartender kept us in drinks and managed the chicanery of the fringe like a pro. We both commented the next day about how exceptional he was. In a strange town and a dive bar 2 gals can feel on their guard, but something about our bartender just made us feel safe. Can't thank him enough for that. (Thanks for the bumper sticker - I've been wearing my Dicks hat all weekend!!) The view is spectacular, next time I'll have to come earlier to catch the sunset. read more

Don't order drinks within a half hour of closing, they have no problem dumping them just after you have paid. Stay away from the short dark haired bartender, he is pissed off and jaded looking to start a fight, kick you out and/or call the local sherrif on you just to prove he's the boss. We had a group of people minding our own business spending $1000+ over a few days there and he still insisted on treating us like shit. This is a great local bar in Mendocino. Know that it really is locals though, and don't be a touron (part tourist, part moron) when you go here. Seriously - just be cool. They have a full bar and lots of good beers on tap - some local and some not. It's good though, and if you want to watch a game while you're in Mendocino this is a good place. They have a few TVs and will accommodate which game you want to watch on at least one of them. read more

Awesome, righteous spot in Mendocino village. We recently overtook Dick's completely with an entire wedding party, and found ourselves meeting new friends at every angle as opposed to being divided between locals and visitors. Before long the jukebox (which is varied and GREAT by the way) was pumped and the whole bar just ripped it up. My wife and I spent a few days over New Year's in Mendocino and one of the highlights was in Dick's Place Bar. One should always enter with caution, as we did, a small town bar filled with locals. We found two seats at the end of the bar and were promptly served our generous drinks by a very friendly Bartender. Within a half hour we were involved in lively conversation with at least five locals and found that our money was no good as they bought us drinks for the next two hours! What a stellar night. Many thanks to Chris the Grocer/Ditch digger and Madrone -true gentlemen. We will be going back to that terrific town many times and our first stop will always be Dick's Place bar!! Ahhh, Dick's Place. Their motto is, "So few Richards, so many Dicks." One of the oldest bars in the country, dating to the repeal of Prohibition, and changed very little over the years. This is real, 1930's style Mendocino, from before Carmel-ization. If you like a good old-fashioned saloon with a number of questionable "characters" and some really good, friendly bartenders, this is your kind of place. Ask about the old logging tools on the walls. I think the only way to get unfriendly service is to be one of which there are so many. Dick's isn't for everyone, thank God, but it is my favorite hangout in town. read more

First off the ambiance is dirty, dusty, many duck taped stool, and moldy smell. I would have given one star except for the fact of the bartender hooking us up with strong drinks-I.e.,$10 plus per drink. Don't think I will be going back, sticking to hotel drinking! read more
