I'm glad to waited a day to write this review, as usually one's anger subsides after a day. I'm unfortunately still VERY dissatisfied with the service that I received yesterday at Dick's.
I purchased a Stoeger Condor Field Shotgun from Dick's at the end of June, in part to receive the manufacturer's rebate, as well as being able to handle the specific firearm that I was going to purchase. The gun I was very happy with, I wound up buying the store's model despite a nick to the stock (merely a cosmetic issue). Dick's store policy for selling firearms is for the customer to wait 11 days rather than the usual 10 day waiting period so that there is no confusion as to what time the firearm can be released to the purchaser. Unfortunately, I went out of town for the weekend on what was to be the 11th day (7/9), so I had to wait until yesterday to go and pick up the gun.
After waiting at the firearms counter for almost 15 minutes, I searched the store for an employee to come and assist me. I found someone in the shoe department who called over Andrew, who apparently was the manager on duty. Andrew then went to the back of the store after taking all of my paperwork, which was in order. Andrew disappeared for almost 20 minutes, then came back to tell me that he was unable to release the firearm to me as he does not have the proper credentials (he does not have a DOJ Instructor # to complete the safe handling of a firearm requirement of the State of California). He told me that the man normally in charge of these things had called out sick. He then called his manager, who confirmed that there was nothing to be done for me.
I'm sure Andrew's customer service training included to never get upset, to remain calm, and to remain polite with a customer. Andrew did succeed at all of these things. Where Andrew failed was at the SERVICE part of customer service. When wasting a customer's time and money due to store mismanagement (which is exactly what happened, my time/gas was wasted, and I was told to come back and deal with this process again because their store was not properly staffed to accommodate my transaction), Andrew's response to me was a blank stare telling me that it was "unfortunate".
I'm certainly glad Andrew was trained to inform customers when a situation is unfortunate for them. Though, I certainly did not need his help in seeing how unfortunate the situation was. I asked if I was supposed to call ahead to make sure that they were properly managing their store? Why even have a firearms counter if they could not indeed sell firearms?
Andrew had nothing for me. Absolutely nothing. I sat there and tried to help him brainstorm a solution for our problem, find someone from another store that could finish the transaction, perhaps the manager that he phoned twice could help (is it unreasonable to expect an employee to come in to finish a sale...I mean, I was being asked to come in a second time as a customer). Andrew at no time offered any sort of goodwill gesture. Heck, how about 10% off of my next tiny transaction, like on a t-shirt or something? Save me sales tax...how about that? That's a small gesture, but would have been appreciated. I got nothing. I never even asked or suggested that I be given any sort of discount, just tried to help him make the initial transaction. It's almost as if it didn't even occur to Andrew that this was a possible. Just a blank stare, and the confirmation of how "unfortunate" the situation was.
My solution: I returned the gun. Right there on the spot. It means I had to eat the $20 DOJ background check fee. I was willing to do so. And it may seem like this was out of spite, but with so many alternatives for purchasing this gun or with purchasing anything, why should I give Dick's my hard earned money and reward them for bad customer service? I asked Andrew if he understood the ramifications of me returning the gun. Sure, a measly $500(!) transaction no longer on their books, but that I would NEVER buy something from them again. Don't they want my money in the future? Don't they want me to continue to shop there? Don't they understand that everyone that I talk to will hear about how terrible this experience was and I will encourage them to not buy there? As consumers, we ultimately vote as to which businesses will thrive through our spending, and I have a feeling that this particular location may not have much of a future...
Don't waste your time here. I've done an FFL through Turner's, p2k (El Cajon), and Big 5. All very straightforward experiences. p2k was actually a great experience, very efficient. read more
