I have had a handful appointments at this office over the last year. They are the first dentist office that comes up for my insurance on the ZocDoc app in this area so I figured I'd give them a shot. My Initial appointment was in April 2025 and it had been about 2 years since I had last been to the dentist. I expected I would need some work done since I hadn't kept up with regular cleanings. In general, I've always had healthy teeth at 34 years old with only a couple of fillings in my life as the extent of my dental work. When I got to the office and they did my x-rays, Dr. Sutherland started going over them and recommended a deep cleaning, 2 fillings and a crown. I figured I probably needed them since I'd neglected my cleanings over the last couple years and I'm getting older. The staff wrote me up a treatment plan for some $3000 worth of work and I bit the bullet and let them do the cleaning and proceed with starting on the crown on the same day. I was not properly educated by the staff on what the crown procedure was and before I knew it they were numbing me and grinding down the tooth they were going to put the crown on. This is partially my own ignorance but had I known what getting a crown entailed, I probably wouldn't have agreed to get it on that day. They put a temporary crown on while the new one was coming back from the lab. I couldn't get an appointment for the real crown until a month or so later. In that time, the temporary crown came off several times. Not sure if this is normal for temporary crowns or just shoddy work. This was painful and concerning, though the office was always responsive with same day or next day appointments to get it put back on or have a new one made. I did have issues with billing for the work. When they first handed me my bill, basically none of my treatment was covered by MetLife PDP Plus insurance except the X Rays and the basic portion of the cleaning. Which I get, insurance companies suck. But after I reviewed the billing and my coverage, I determined 1 of the 2 fillings was actually covered. Pearl and Karina did correct this once I pointed it out to them, though they did not refund me the money until after a portion of the work was completed on June 19th. (I paid in advance.) Eventually, I was finally able to get the entirety of the work done in the two fillings and crown. This was mid July 2025 after my initial appointment in late April. Almost 3 months from my first appointment. When I returned in January 2026 for my 6 month cleaning, Jenni, the awesome hygienist had moved offices but the new gal was nice enough. Pearl and Dr. Sutherland started going over my chart and my X-Rays from last year. He started talking about potential work to be done and I had to stop him and tell him he'd already done work on these teeth last year and that the X-Rays were from that first visit in April 2025. He was a little startled but apologized and mentioned something about needing new X-Rays. The one thing that bothered me was that while he was going over the X Rays, he did not mention a crown when they were so quick to recommend it last year during my first appointment. I'm kinda left wondering if I ever really needed a crown at all at this point.... When I was leaving that appointment, I started going over the billing with Karina and found out that my cleaning from that day was not covered by insurance since I have to get "deep cleanings" every 4 months due to my upper and lower permanent retainers. I have had these retainers for 20 years at this point and have always had my cleanings covered by insurance. I questioned them on this saying, "Well then I can basically never expect to have a cleaning covered by insurance at your office then?".... They seemed to see the point I was making and actually billed the cleaning as basic that day as a gesture of goodwill so that insurance would cover it. All that being said, the staff here is kind enough but the in office experience, treatment and weird billing issues I've had here left me feeling uneasy. I think they have some things to work out with staffing and operations and I probably won't be back. They also don't have any way to manage billing or appointments online that I know of. This is frustrating. For a chain of dentists offices with 6 locations, you'd think they'd have these things figured out. read more

DO NOT COME HERE. This dentist ruined my teeth and has caused me so much pain and suffering. I went in for the first time for what I thought would be a simple check up and filling. I went in with zero pain or issues aside from perhaps a slight bit of discomfort when flossing in a certain area. They take x-rays and pictures of my teeth. The dentist informs me that I have a "crack" on one of my teeth as well as some "decay." In the office looking on the big screen with him I could kind of see what he was talking about, but in hindsight there really wasn't much at all. Looking at the photos now (because I requested the records), I don't see a crack. The dentist (Sutherland) suggested we put a crown on the tooth to preserve or, "save it." He did not inform me of any potential negative consequences. I am the type of person who trusts medical professionals, so I said okay. Ever since the procedure I have been in intense pain. Couldn't chew on my left side, couldn't drink water, and had constant pain and aching. He essentially destroyed my tooth. I ended up having to get a root canal. Three weeks later and I am still dealing with issues. This man has destroyed my health. I wish to god I had never met him. I hate him so much. DO NOT COME TO THIS DENTAL OFFICE. The only possible good thing I can say is that the office manager, Pearl, listened to all of my concerns and ended up refunding me for the crown. read more

Went for my first appointment. Sat in waiting room for 25 minutes. A dental assistant asked if I had been checked in. She had checked me in when I arrived for my appointment 25 minutes earlier. Asked how much longer it would be. While she was nice enough, there was no apology for the wait. Was simply told the were running behind and would get to me. Spoke with a woman in the waiting room who said that is typical. They are always running behind and cancel appointments the night before. That the dentists do not go the extra step and push things off onto the dental assistants. Had heard enough. Canceled the appointment and told them I would be looking for a different dentist. read more

BUYERS BE AWARE!!!BUYERS BE AWARE!!! I should do my homework before trying this dentist and office. 1st day I had a great impression of this doctor and this office. Me and my husband thought that we found our dentist for life. Pearl, the office manager seemed to me in the beginning someone that we could trust. She gave me that big bill but I was happy to pay trusting them, yet they didn't disclosed all of what they were going to do, and charged more money from me and my husband than we want to spend. He promise lies in his media, like crowns in the same day. I feel like his staff is always people in training on the patients. They hurted my mouth several times. Sitted my husband 5 hours on the dentist chair just to do impressions for the temporaries, until another person came introducing her self as a the dentist's ex wife, and get the job done. My husband, which is a senior, ended injuring his back, after all this time laying in the dentist chair, while the staff was trying to do their jobs unsuccessfully. And still after 3 weeks he is not able to fully walk. After 2 months wearing my temporary bridge, and a temporary crown that wasn't disclosed on the bill. They putted the 1st Permanent bridge and crown, that fell off on the same day. Dr. Sutherland and his team broken my tooth on the side of the crown he inputed. When I went back to fix the broken tooth, he so arrogant rude, and unapologetic person, was incapable to apologize for his mistakes. Now after 2 months and half, underneath of the 2nd permanent bridge is hurting a lot, and I can't chew on the spot. I've been complaining about this pain since he putted the 1st temporary, and he ignored my comments. But when he finished everything, he told me that if in one week I am still feeling pain, I should come back for a root canal. His office manager Pearl will call after 1 week. After all this hassle I will wait feeling pain for a week, to come and pay more money to them. NO THANKS. I have an appointment in 3 days (today is Friday), with another dentist to check and fix what this dentist/person did to my mouth. Please check also Yelps by his name. Dr. Sutherland. Horrible! They replaced an old crown with a new one, which fell out 2x. On the 3rd try, the doctor (Sutherland) told me there was not enough of the tooth for the crown to hold (hmmmm.... was never told that previously, and if there wasn't enough tooth left, that is their fault for grinding too much of it off to begin with) and the tooth would have to be extracted. I told him he was not going to touch my tooth, or anything else in my mouth, and he said they could refer me to another dentist. I told him I had already seen one and that his (Sutherland's) office is going to give me a refund for what he did. His reply was, "absolutely, just have the new dentist call us with his diagnosis and the work that needs to be done." Besides that situation, I had my teeth cleaned there and some Indian guy, who touted himself as a "doctor," who, the Office Manager Pearl told me, may have been a doctor in India, but in the US he is just a hygienist. Hmmmmm.....he also said I had a gum infection and treated me with antibiotics and fluoride. I went immediately to another dentist who said there was absolutely nothing wrong with my gums or my teeth. The last, and most damning part of this guy Sutherland is that he was found to be unethical and was fined and placed on probation by the CA Dental Board a few years ago. (Google his name) When I asked handy dandy Pearl about it, she said it was not Dr. Sutherland, but an employee of his in one of his other practices (he owns 3). They are all under Sutherland's name, so he should surely be held responsible, as he was. If I were you, I would stay as far as I could away from this guy and his practice. read more

They are very nice and understanding and they know how to do the billing to bill insurances. They told me they would help me and they honestly did. They gave me a whole new bridge and in the future if it ever is to come out they said they will recement it at no charge. They honestly try to work with you and everything is very high tech. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Under no circumstances, even if you feel you have no other option, do NOT go to this dentist office. I ignored some of the negative reviews and deeply regret it. My experience was extremely upsetting and costly. I was misled about services and billing, and ultimately ended up paying over $8,500 for treatments that I NEVER received. Attempts to resolve this directly with the office went nowhere. For context, they suggested that I receive their version of Invisalign and signed me up for a payment plan for Invisalign, without my consent in knowing what I was signing up for. Dr. Steven Sutherland may be a capable dentist, but the administrative side of this practice is completely unacceptable. The front office and billing process was aggressive, and unresponsive once payment was taken. In particular, I strongly advise against signing up for any financial arrangements through Pearl Harrod. Unfortunately, she pressures you into agreements and was unable to get refunds for services that never happened. The front office staff then screened out our calls and would hang up on us any time we tried to speak to them. Pearl even confirmed in person that the front office ignored our calls. I also attempted to escalate my concerns to Veena Ravilla, who was identified to me as the regional manager for Digital Smiles. Despite multiple emails and calls over a period of 4 months, I never received a response. The office even put in writing that she would contact me, which never occurred. The lack of accountability and follow-through has been shocking. I feel taken advantage of, and the stress this has caused cannot be overstated. After almost 5 months of weekly calls, e-mails and in-person visits to the dentist demanding a refund for the services I didn't receive, it was finally resolved. If we hadn't been consistently following up, and going in person to get them to initaite refunds in front of us, it wouldn't have been resolved and they would have pocketed the money. Please don't have you or your family go through the same mistake we did and find another dentist. read more

I came in for teeth pain, they thought they could save my teeth vs giving me a root canal. I prepaid for everything and got half the work done and now they are not refunding me the rest of the money I am owed. I have called several times, left vm and spoke to pearl. The manager refuses to call me back. What's worse is I need a root canal because it didn't work! I just want my money back! read more

I have been calling for several months now asking for my refund for work I did Not have done. I've spoken to the manager multiple times. they keep saying "We will call you back" once they have gotten the correct amount they owe me back. Beware. This DDS has been sanctioned by the dental board for fraud and unethical practices. Visited this clinic last month and was shocked that there is no receptionist. Please go to the dental board site and research his sanctions When I visited the clinic it is more than apparent he did not learn from his sanctions and continues a fraudulent practice. Digital Smiles of Torrance has an excellent staff. The offixe manager, Pearl is amazing. She is communicative and very transparent with regards to treatment planning as well as explaining treatment in laimems terms. Karina is always incredibly sweet on the phone and in person. I've had to have emergency dental treatment but thabkfully had the pleasure of working with Dr. Solomon and his Dental Assistant Cristal, which has made treatment an ease. Dr. Solomon always ensures Im comfortable, well informed and in no pain. Which, to be honest is a major plus for me as my treatment has been pretty intensive. They even do in-house crowns, which has been so great in getting treatment completed swiftly. Patients are always greeted with a smile and treated like family. Jenny, the dental hygenist is amazing. She is gentle and incredibly thorough with regards to explaining treatment, after care, etc. I highly recommend the dental office for all your dental needs. read more

The dental staff was very nice during my visit in Jan, but they charged an arm and a leg. I was told the work I needed to be done would be $10k+. I chose to just do a deep dental cleaning and spent over $800 during my visit in January and just received another bill (6 months later) for another $200+. I ended up getting a second opinion and the cost was significantly cheaper. I will not be returning to Digital Smiles. read more

I came 15 minutes early for my appointment. I waited the entire time without anyone coming out to check me in. 10 minutes after my scheduled appointment time (total wait time now 25 minutes), Jenny the hygienist walked out to the waiting area and I asked her about the wait. She said she would check with the staff. Unclear if it was the dentist or someone else she was talking to, but when she told them I had been waiting, they responded "It's only been 10 minutes." When I was finally seen and evaluated, I was told the dentist would come and answer questions about the dental guard; a staff member (not the dentist) came instead and asked for payment. It seems other people have had good experiences here but unfortunately, that wasn't the case for me. read more

Unfortunately I have to state that this "business" has done nothing but scam me and now they refuse to take my calls. In total they have duped me out of 20,000!!! They lied and said they billed my insurance and this would be mine and my husbands out of pocket portion all the while NEVER filing a claim with our insurance company. We have attempted to handle this with the office manager pearl however now I cannot get her on the phone. I read another review similar to this and I advise all to please check with your insurance company before paying these people anything!! We are still waiting for our reimbursements. read more

I've been a patient of Dr Sutherland for over 15 years beginning with a smile makeover which included Cerec veneers & replacing all my metal fillings with composite white resin ~ my smile turned out amazing! I got a lot of compliments & was actually told that I was "so beautiful" which had never happened before. The results exceeded my expectations & I've been coming here ever since. The staff is wonderful! Jenny does a.m. awesome job at cleaning my teeth without pain as my gums are very sensitive & Pearl has been incredibly helpful with billing on so many occasions.
