My uncle invited me for lunch at Din Ky. They had a deal where you can get a bowl of noodles for $10 on Fridays during lunch time. The original price is just over $14 so it's almost 33% off. We both got the dac biet dry noodle bowls of Hu tieu. I got the trieu chau style (rice noodles) and he got the version with egg noodles. Both of our bowls come with pork, fish balls, shrimp, squid, quail eggs, some liver meat, and a fried shrimp cracker. Since we both got the dry version, we got a bowl of broth on the side. Din Ký 2 is a Vietnamese restaurant, which originated from Orange County, CA, with a second location in Houston on Bellaire Blvd. I got their hủ tiếu đặc biệt or Din Ky Special dry, càri dê (goat curry), mì hoành thánh (wonton soup), and bánh khọt. The dry Din Ky Special was my favorite of the dishes. The noodle dishes come with a prawn cracker on the side, which I like to dip into my bowl. The egg noodles were bouncy, and there were a lot of toppings, including two pieces of shrimp and other meats. Their dry special noodle comes with a sweet sauce on the side. The curry was a bit too gamey for me and only came with one baugette. The wonton soup was a bit on the sweeter side than I prefer, but the wonton pieces were soft. The bánh khọt was another favorite. They came out crispy with eight pieces per order. The inside was a bit spacious, and service was okay. I love and grew up eating hu tieu but I feel like it's pretty rare to find Hu Tieu Trieu Chau, or Teochew Noodle Soup in Houston. I was really excited to try this place when I found out they opened! I got the #15 Hu Tieu Trieu Chau Dac Biet Din Ky, my husband got the M3 with beef, and we also ordered the banh khot. I thoroughly enjoyed the hu tieu, the taste of the broth was super nostalgic for me and really hit the spot. The bánh xèo is a complete joke as the give only a few half- sliced shrimps, cheap slices of pork belly and filled it up with just bean sprouts and nothing else. They're so skimpy on the lettuce and forget the herbs because you can literally count the leaves of only 2 kinds. The fish sauce that comes with it again like the condiments above is super sweet! Went on a Friday afternoon and was super impressed by the food. Normally I wait a bit before a new restaurant opens to try it just so they can work out the kinks in the service and the menu, but I took a risk here and it definitely paid off. We ordered the Hu Tieu Kho, Banh Khot, and the Goat Curry (Cari De) to share. The Hu Tieu Kho was extremely flavorful and had all of the fixings from the meat to the cilantro and herbs, the fried onion crisps, the quail eggs, fish cakes, the soup on the side. The sauce added the perfect hint of savory sweetness without being overpowering. The addition of the crispy shrimp chip definitely elevated the dish. Overall, the flavors are authentic and this dish is on par, if not better, than other places I've tried. (8/10) The banh khot were crispy on the outside and softer towards the center. The flavor was spot on, however, the shrimp being placed on top instead of being cooked into the batter was a less traditional way of cooking the dish. (7/10) The goat curry was super tasty and the goat meat was perfectly tender. This dish surprised me the most as it is not traditionally served at many Vietnamese restaurants, but this place definitely did it justice. However from the first taste of my noodles the broth was so sweet and immediately, I thought about overuseage of MSG. Saturday July 12th It was our first visit, and everything went downhill from there. We were seated at table number 2 and waited for 3 minutes for the server to take our order. A man wearing glasses was appointed by another lady worker to take our order, but he kept doing other things behind the counter. 5 minutes later, two gentlemen walked in and were immediately seated at table number 5. The man wearing glasses finally came to take our order, but he didn't approach our table; instead, he went to table number 5, clearly knowing we were the first. He finally came to take our order, and I placed four orders: salted ice coffee, Banh Xeo, and two noodle soups. We got our noodles and finished them, but my coffee order had not arrived yet. While waiting for my coffee, the owner of the place walked in with his friends, and they were immediately served ice coffee by the workers. I finally got my ice coffee after we called the worker twice, and we still hadn't received our Banh Xeo; I asked them to cancel it upon checkout. This place had six workers on the floor, but none of them did a good job. They need more training, and the owner needs to be more active in monitoring their business and workers.
