I've had this spot on my mind for a while. Why? Because they serve some of my favorite Vietnamese comfort dishes. Growing up, my mom and grandma would make Cá Kho Tộ and Canh Chua, and those two dishes just belong together. You get the rich, savory flavors from the caramelized fish, while the soup adds the perfect amount of sourness to balance everything out. Before we went, I called to ask if they served Vietnamese egg rolls since my friend was craving some. The guy who answered the phone wasn't the friendliest, but I decided to roll the dice anyway, and I'm glad I did because the food was solid. We started with the egg rolls. At $10.95 for five pieces, I thought they were a little pricey. They came out piping hot and fresh from the fryer with a great crunch, and the fish sauce was delicious. My only complaint was the lettuce--they only gave us one piece. What am I supposed to do with one piece of lettuce? The Canh Chua Tôm had the perfect level of sourness, exactly how I like it. The shrimp were a little overcooked, but the medium-sized bowl was a generous portion. The Cá Kho Tộ was cooked perfectly. The sauce was rich and savory with a hint of sweetness, though I would've liked just a touch more salt. Pair it with a bowl of rice and some soup, and it's hard to beat. Com Nieu Houston is probably one of the best in the Houston area when it comes to authentic Vietnamese food. I've been going here for several years, both in person and for take-outs, and they have never failed to impress me. I like to go here for late lunch or early dinner when the restaurant isn't as busy. The restaurant is in the same shopping center as the Chase Bank and Thanh Da Quan. Even though it's located on the far side of Chinatown near My Hoa Market, the drive is definitely worth it. The restaurant is small and well decorated, and the workers are nice. The dishes are a bit pricey compared to other Vietnamese restaurants for the portion size, but the taste and quality definitely make it worth it. Even my parents, who are super picky when it comes to Vietnamese restaurants, love the food at Com Nieu Houston. Like the name, most of the dishes here are in clay pots. Everything is always super flavorful and perfectly cooked. My absolute favorites are the Thit Ba Chi Kho To (caramelized pork belly), the Suon Non Rim To (braised spare ribs) and the Canh Chua Tom (Vietnamese sweet and sour soup with shrimps). I also really love their Com Chien Ca Man (salted fish & chicken fried rice), which I think is one of the best in town, as well as their Ga Kho Xa Ot (braised lemongrass chicken). I'm in love with catfish cooked in clay pots, and I'm still mourning the closure of Tay Do. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, and the ambiance is pretty standard for an Asian restaurant. The waiter was friendly and we were served quickly. The eggrolls were piping hot and the skin was slightly bubbly which I love. The filling was also well seasoned and not too peppery. I'm always hunting for a great egg roll and you can tell that these are made in house. No rice cake I've ever tried has come close to the one from Tan Tan, but their rice cake was crispy and came with pickled vegetables and two dipping sauces. Not as good as Tan Tan, but still extremely enjoyable with a nice twist. The claypot catfish was perfectly cooked and the sauce was nicely caramelized and scrumptious. Bun Dau Mam Tom: this was a bit different compared to other restaurants I've had it at! The sausages were new to me, but very flavorful. The noodles being cube blocks was also quite novel to me. I think I prefer my noodles to be separated. The fermented sauce was deliciously funky. Grilled Mackerel with lemongrass: this was a skip to me. The mackerel was a bit dry and not very flavorful. The fish sauce was definitely carrying, but I did like the wide assortment of vegetables, herbs, and fruit on the side. Canh Chua: Some of the best I've had. Very balanced sweet and tangy broth with a good amount of tender catfish and vegetables. Probably my favorite dish! Clay pot rice: Crispy at the bottom and fluffy. Not sure if I'd order it again to be honest. Not much different compared to other forms of cooked rice. Fried Shrimp with taro: this surprised me. My mom and I always had plans to visit Com Nieu, but something always comes up. A group of friends were hungry, and one suggested this restaurant and I was not opposed since it was on my list to try. The parking lot was crazy, they had a car show next shopping center over (R&B teahouse) and their parking lot was full, their customer improvised and parked in com nieu's lot. This caused a huge issue for all of us, and some of our friends decided to go elsewhere. The food reminded me of my childhood years, felt like I was right at home eating Vietnamese comfort food. We had goi bo tai chanh (beef carpaccio), canh chua ca (Vietnamese sweet & sour soup with catfish), rau muong xao toi (water spinach with garlic), thit ba chi kho to (caramelized pork belly), ca phao mam tom (pickled baby eggplants with shrimp paste sauce), and tom chien hoang bao (shrimp wrapped with fried taro). The dishes also came with a side of rice, but since we had several people with us, we had to ask for more white rice, and there was an extra charge for that. Everything dish we ordered I enjoyed. My favorite was pork belly, pickled baby eggplants with the funky shrimp paste sauce (iykyk) and the bo tai chanh that also come with a funky sauce. I guess you can say I like anything that comes with funky sauce. One negative comment - the restaurant was hot, not sure if they had AC issues, the portal fan did not do much help. Having traveled to Vietnam several times over the years, Com Nieu Houston gives off similar vibes to the homey cafes available all over the country. The place is casual, group friendly, has a nice staff, and most importantly, serves really excellent food. It's not big, but offers a good amount of natural lighting with tables setup for groups. The last time I was here, the AC wasn't working so well and things felt a little stuffy (#1) despite multiple fans in the background. When in doubt, sit against the wall where there are mini wall unit ACs. The clean bathrooms get a thumbs up. Food wise, there's so much to appreciate. The appetizers have a few standouts and I am so happy to have sampled all of them. Their bap nep xao bo ($13) is a nice heap of sauteed corn with dried shrimp and a generous dose of butter. The bot chien trung ($14) is a texture laden rice flour cake with eggs and goes perfectly with their fish sauce. I'd be lying if I didn't think their "moms eggrolls" were wonderfully fried and provided the best crunch. I also got to try their ga hap hanh gung ($19), which reminds me a bit of poached chicken with ginger scallion. It was a bit cold and skimpy meat wise, so this was the least liked dish on this end. Their bun dau mam tom combo ($20), which has all the funk from the mam (#2) and plenty of shrimpy flavor. Their biggest highlight has to be their signature caramelized catfish claypot ($16-20) aka ca bong lau kho to. It was just sweet enough to be candy, but hearty enough to make it a must try for all visits. The fish was wonderfully fatty and was the perfect main course for all the rice. The caramelized pork belly bowl ($17) is equally tasty and I appreciated the bits of shrimp in the bowl as well. Another outstanding but simple dish was their goi ga ($19), which was a nice salad with pickled herbs, strips of chicken with a little bit of sour and sweet all rolled into one bite. My large group and I would have wanted seconds on this if we could. We also opted for their lau for their canh chua ($25), which was a nice sweet and sour soup with their catfish. Rounded it off with mix xao ($14) stir fried noodles, and a round of drinks that included Vietnamese iced coffee ca phe sua da ($5) and their sua tuoi ca phe suong sao ($6), which was a Vietnamese coffee with black grass jelly. Overall, it's been a couple of outstanding experiences here with a friendly owner and robust staff. In the hot humid Houston heat, this restaurant really highlighted the dining experience of eating in a stuffy restaurant in Vietnam with little a/c and just floor fans blowing around hot air. This is all happening while enjoying some very solid clay pot rice and stewed fish dishes. The Canh Chua had such a good portion of fish that was super fresh and not fishy at all. This restaurant is now the level of customer service I compare all restaurants to! We had dinner here for the first time in February and ordered the Tôm Chiên Hoàng Bào and it came with rice paper. We have never used rice paper so needless to say we looked like a bunch of rookies haha. The staff saw us struggling and came over to give us a hands on lesson on how to use the rice paper! He put gloves on and gave us a full 5 minute introductory lesson without even being asked. I was so impressed and grateful customer service 10/10! I usually hate to place bad reviews on family owned places like Clay Pot Kitchen, but sadly they really left me no choice. My dad and I visited from out of state, and heard about how authentic & good this restaurant was from TikTok & Instagram; so, we decided to give it a try. Decorum was average, just your typical Viet restaurant. However, service was horrible. The whole time we felt like we were unwanted and were being rushed to leave. The lady who served us gave us an attitude while placing our order. For our drinks, we just got hot tea ($2.00). For the food, we had their popular "Ca Bong Lau Kho To" with Rice ($19.95) as the entree & their "Bap Nep Xao Bo" ($12.95) as an appetizer. Here's where the real problem starts. The "Ca Bong Lau Kho To" with Rice, which is basically caramelized catfish served in a clay pot, was very mushy and tasted old. This dish is usually supposed to have a hard like texture that exemplifies its freshness; the mushiness showed that the dish was not made fresh. My dad and I assumed that the catfish was already frozen. Because of this, my dad and I had food poisoning right after we left. The "Bap Nep Xao Bo", which is basically grilled and buttered corn, was not worth it for the price. The portion was small and had no speciality to it at all. Also, for our hot tea, they gave it to us in a water vase instead of an actual tea kettle. Mind you, HOT tea. How could we pour the hot tea with the vase when there's no handle to the vase? It's like they want us to burn our hands while doing it. Not to mention, they served it to us in styrofoam cups. The ambiance also felt kind of toxic because we saw the employees arguing with each other, so that made us very uncomfortable. To say we were disappointed is a huge understatement. The garlic green beans (dau que xao toi) I think could have been more garlicky and the flat rice seafood noodles (hu tieu ap chao) I wish had more of that seared wok flavor. I was in a curious mood today and have been eyeing a certain restaurant ever since I have heard of them from social media. A very unique concept that me but yet homey. I did pick 2 dishes: the combo assortment platter and a medium braised fish in a clay pot. The assortment platter was very interesting for me. In the past I had something similar when my extended family celebrates Têt. I liked all the selections. There is a nice balance to each and I was just picking and choosing throughout the meal. The braised fish in a clay pot is a staple Vietnamese dish. Personally I know one other place I enjoy this dish but unfortunately they closed and have been looking for this. The fish was tender and it had that very nice caramelized color and the peppers to enhance the flavors. It was sooo good. I had to be careful with the thin bones. I definitely forgot to take a picture of it but it does come with clay pot rice too. Simplicity is best but loaded with flavor is what I call this. Overall I enjoyed this visit to Clay Pot Kitchen- Com Nieu Houston. What I enjoyed was the cozy feeling enjoying the meal and what I liked is this is a family business. One thing that is not huge deal but to note is the assortment platter picks. All were good to me but I would be very cautious with the dipping sauce and the herbs. I am accustomed to the fermented shrimp paste and knowing this will be very salty. The herbs have an interesting flavor to me. Tom rim was bussinnn! the shell was hard to peel off though, super sticky. we went the day they got power back on, so we didn't get to experience the full menu, but I would definitely like to come back. Home away from home. Canh Chua here is one of the best I've ever tasted, 10/10, absolutely amazing, and tastes exactly like my mom's. Broth was sour, savory, rich, filled with vegetables, and best of all, the buttery fish that falls apart in your mouth. Love love love. It was our first time trying Bun Dau Mam Tom, and I can say it was a great experience! Mam was not too salty, and it's a great dish for the summer. Dồi was a bit chewy though and can be cooked a little bit more. Braised ribs was not the best we've had, but overall not bad. A bit salty, and the main con is that it was very very tough. I lovee to eat cartilage, but the cartilage in this dish was rock hard. I did informed the owner about it though and she said they will work on it. Stir fried corn tasted great in the beginning, but at the very end you can see a lot of oil sitting at the bottom. I also think the dish is a bit expensive for what it is. Overall, although the place has a few pointers they could improve on, I think this place is great for homestyle Vietnamese comfort food. Also, don't forget to try their desserts. I forgot to take a picture because we devoured it so fast, but I highly recommend the Flan (with coffee on top) and Taiwanese pudding. Since I'm Vietnamese, I've eaten many of the dishes offered here at different restaurants around Houston. The menu was much more than I expected and we ordered two of the best selling dishes: bo luc lac and the clay pot fish, along with banh bot chien. The bo luc lac dish came out first, and I was very surprised by how it tasted. The ones i've had are usually savory but here it had a sweet, smoky glaze which is really unique and I still can't decide whether I liked it or not, but I probably won't be ordering it again. The banh bot chien came out next and that was my fav dish out of all we ordered. It was crispy and I enjoyed eating it with their special sauce, which was tangy, and some pickled carrots. The last dish to come out was the clay pot caramelized catfish, and that was my boyfriend's favorite because he said that tasted very authentic and very close to how his family makes it. The prices here are slightly higher than most mom and pop Vietnamese restaurants in the area. The service here is better than most Vietnamese restaurants though -- the staff are attentive and quick to check on customers, and even came to refill our jug of water when he noticed that the jug was low without us asking. The ambiance was decent, normal Vietnamese establishments with plenty of seating and amazing Vietnamese culture embraced. The service was good, they checked up on us every 5 - 10 minutes. We ordered the caramelized pork belly. This was good, growing up eating home made, this was pretty on par. Wished there were more meat to fatty ratio. They brought this out in a clay pot. The canh chưa was pleasantly well seasoned, normally I ordered the fish version, but my friend didn't want any seafood, so we substitute for a pork ribs option and it was surprisingly good. Also ordered the bánh bot chiến. It was ok, crispy but nothing compared to tan tan. Overall was good, but pretty mid compared to other restaurants in Bellaire. We ordered a few items. Kind of disappointed they didn't have heo quay (crispy pork)... they apparently took it off the menu because some people said it was too crispy. The sampler plate was just okay... wouldn't order that again. Com ga chicken was very flavorful... the goi (chicken salad) with it had too much sauce for my liking.. pickled veggies on it weren't that good. Now "can we skip to the good part?" The sour soup/canh chua was very good! It's usually not sour enough for my taste. The rau muong had very good flavor but was a bit on the sweet side...
