We were in Olympia for an appointment and couldn't not stop and browse the Olympia's Farmers Market. There was live music and the food smelled amazing so decided to order some lunch at Dingey's. It's counter service, the lady taking orders was super nice, fantastic service. My husband ordered the battered rockfish, and I order a crab melt with tomato, and a cup of chowder. We both had strawberry lemonades which were delicious! The crab melt was ok, nothing to write home about. I'm a huge chowder fan, tried various chowders all over the US, wasn't huge on their chowder. Husband said the rockfish wasn't bad but could have used an additional piece to be full. Food was all good, just nothing memorable. It was a solid lunch, hit the spot. read more

Solid 3.5 stars. First, the pros: it's at the farmers market, and you can't beat the location. Customer service was friendly, and they do a good job of moving the long line (the line takes a bit, as does waiting for the food, but given the number of employees and the size of the stand, they're doing great). Lots of options here, and food tasted fresh. Clam chowder had a great flavor to it. Swantown fry had a lot of great stuff in it. Cons: some of the food items were very standard and just okay: the potatoes (well cooked, just kinda plain). Clam chowder in bread bowl was A LOT I'd bread bowl and not a ton of chowder. Not sure if was a tourist spot or local favorite, but it satisfied. The crab - frozen to the grill - of the crab cake sandwich was tender with balanced spice. The bun was weak, it distracted from the experience. Maybe go for a crab cake in a salad or as a Benedict. The creamy clam chowder was a bit watery, but good value for the price. There's signage that touts their creamy (white) and Manhattan (red) mixed, but they were out of the latter so I guess we'll never know. I am a little suprised that the reviews are so good for this eatery. It is not bad by any means, but in an area with tons of fresh good seafood, it also is not the top of the list either. What this place does have is a good location. As part of our outdoor Farmer's Market in the area, it is a hot food option while visiting the market. I ordered the prawn basket and it was just ok. We needed a small nosh to tide us over until dinner time while perusing the Olympia Farmers Market, so the Hubs & I decided to share their Crab Cakes plate which was 2 crab cakes & slaw. Their slaw was disappointing as it lacked any flavor but the crab cakes were quite good and fresh. The folks working there were very nice as well. They have a few different seafood offerings to choose from including some breakfast/seafood options. In the hustle and bustle of the Sunday afternoon market in Olympia we found ourselves a bit peckish after looking over a wide variety of apples. We saw dingys and thought that a crab cake and some chowder would hit the spot as it was a fairly crisp day and that's usually my go to l. I had never eaten it in these market stalls before so I thought I would give them a shot. Generally when I am at a farmers market I expect the food stalls to have fresh cuisine made from local ingredients perhaps even purchased within the market itself unfortunately I can say that that was definitively not the case with my lunch here today. The crab cakes obviously not fresh but from frozen, they were mealy largely flavorless and so soddened with oil that I couldn't get through both of them, The oil was so heavy that it coated my mouth ruining my palate for almost anything else. I thought I might find some respite from this attack on my culinary sensibilities in the clam chowder. I gave it a good Stir and saw chunks of potato that were extraordinarily similar in size and shape masterful knife work or a machine I could not tell, the small drab bits if clam screamed out that they had been trapped in a can for who knows how long before joining this hodge podge of ingredients. I tasted the soup and upon exhaling got an Amazingly powerful aftertaste that can only be described as garden hose rubber and tin. Sadly the only thing that was palatable within this meal were the crackers, though even those were stale and lifeless. In a word the food was flat and unpleasant but at least they were nice and it was only moderately expensive. read more

I had been on a seafood craving kick and just HAD to get crab. This place is apparently "known" for its crab cakes, so I was down with the wait in line at the Saturday market. I even intruded on another couples table just so I could sit and enjoy. Now, being a native Oregonian, and considering that I was visiting another state in the pacific northwest, I just assumed that any crab cake, and especially one that a restaurant was "famous" for, would be made of dungeness. Crazy, right? I didn't even notice that the menu didn't mention the type of crab. I just ordered it and eagerly awaited my food. One bite in and I realize that this is it not dungeness. I picked at it a bit and between the flavor and colored bits, I realized this was CANNED crab of some unknown specie. No wonder it was reasonably priced at $10. Although I was disappointed,it wasn't awful, so I ate it anyway. I didn't get sick, and that's a bonus, but I wouldn't eat it again and I certainly wouldn't waste 20 minutes standing in line for minced miscellaneous crab. read more

We have visited the Olympia farmers market quite as few times and never tried any of the awesome smelling food sold at these little stands. So we decided to hit Dingey's. No idea how this place has such good reviews. Seems that maybe their quality has gone down as my fish looked nothing like the photos from five years ago. We skipped out on lunch with friends elsewhere, because this place looked really promising on Yelp. That was a mistake. I ordered the halibut and chips and my husband ordered the two crab cakes. It was very clear neither were made fresh. The crab cakes were mushy and I'm not even sure that it was crab. The halibut was laughable. We're talking tiny frozen pieces thrown into a fryer, not fresh, and definitely not good. I didn't even finish because it was so unappetizing. My husband compared our meals to something you would get at the zoo on a field trip if that tells you anything! the only reason I am giving two stars is the New England clam chowder was okay and they people working were really nice. Oh boy, I hate to write these. See, Dingey's is a food stand in the Olympia Farmers Market, and I love farmers markets. I know Dingey's is probably a local institution and family-owned by locals. Nevertheless, I can't ignore the fact that Dingey's was very disappointing. First, the positives: the best thing about Dingey's is the outdoor market atmosphere. Picnic benches are scattered around, including one right in front of the stand, but there wasn't enough seating and the arrangement felt cramped. The coleslaw was fresh and not drowning in mayonaise. The portion of tartar sauce was generous. The squid was surprisingly not overcooked or tough. These things elevated Dingey's from one star to two. I wanted to try the shrimp cocktail, but at $4.50, it's rather expensive for what you get (a small portion of pre-frozen baby shrimp). Instead I spent $9 on a combo plate of crab cakes ("our specialty") and "calamari." Both dishes came out looking like veal piccata. I am used to calamari that is little bits of squid arms and rings deep fried, which is usually served as an appetizer and can be eaten as finger food. This was a squid steak, a single piece of squid flesh the size of a medium sized pancake, breaded and grilled. The flavor and texture was okay but I couldn't get past the preparation. Also, calamari is normally served with an aioli sauce; tartar sauce is for fish. The "crab cakes" turned out to be a single brown pancake made of flattened, breaded and grilled mush. I am used to crab cakes with visible chunks of crab. This mixture had an even consistency, like a potato pancake. No chunks, no way to know if any crab was in there at all, really. I am pretty sure the cake was mostly filler and not so much crab. The service was slow--not surprising, at noon on a sunny day. But the food was not worth the 5-7 minute wait in line and another 15-16 minutes for the order to come up. I note that at lunch, you could walk across the parking lot to Anthony's, you could probably sit with a view of the water, and enjoy a great crab cake, or some calamari, or a shrimp cocktail, that would absolutely trump what I had at Dingey's, for about the same price. read more

Over the past few months I kept noticing people with clam chowder at the Farmers Market but could never find where it was coming from! Finally, I discovered that Dingey's was the source of the chowder. Of course I then had to try it for myself, and I was not disappointed. I had lunch there on a nice summer day and enjoyed my meal (good thing too, because it cost nearly $15!). I got a small cup of the New England clam chowder, along with a cod filet basket that came with chips (fries) and cole slaw. While I had to wait in line a good 5 minutes, and then another 10 minutes for my food, it was well worth it. The fish and fries were fresh and very tasty, and the clam chowder had a good consistency and was also very good. I enjoyed my meal while watching some live musicians on stage, so the ambiance was great. read more

After a few trips to the farmers market I finally tried the crab cake benedict at Dingey's. Hotdamn! I know some have complained that there isn't crab bursting out of every bite or that the hollandaise is a bit thin but I consider the alternative - an uber rich crab cake covered with thick buttery hollandaise which would be followed by hours of heart burn from eating so much rich food. I found the crab to be plentiful but not so much as to make the cake too rich and the hollandaise had a nice light lemony flavor that complemented the crab. The whole wheat english muffin had been toasted up in plenty of butter. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and the tomato was a nice palate cleanser. At $12.95 for the double it is spendy but you get plenty of food to split between two people and be sated. I have tried the Dingey plate and I have to say that those were some of the best fried clams I have ever had and I used to work in Massachussetts and have had fried clams in both the towns that claim to have started fried clams and Dingey's win hands down. Crisp breading, tender clam and ZERO grit. Warning Dingey's staff - you have yourselves another regular customer. read more

Friend and I went to the Farmer's Market to walk around and decided to have a bite of lunch. We shared the 2 Cod Fish and Chips plate. The fish was obviously cooked at the time of order; it was hot, well seasoned and the breading was crisp and not bready. The french fries were hot and crisp and the coleslaw was wonderful. We sat at the picnic bench with 4 other people and just ate and watched people eat their yummy fish lunch! Prices are excellent, service fast and staff friendly. Definitely will revisit. read more

I am a huge fan of Dingey's. Unlike what a previous reviewer said, I think they offer some very good values. For example, I always get a 1/2 and 1/2 lunch (forget what it's actually called) with a tuna steak - cooked rare - and fried oysters (comes with pretty good slaw). That runs something like 8 bucks. I challenge anyone to find a meal like this at Anthony's for anywhere near 8 dollars. Now, Dingey's food is not fancy, but I have always been very happy with the quality and the way it was cooked. Maybe some of their other items are not as good - I don't know because I have not tried them all. But if their food and their values were really that bad, then it would not be one of the most popular vendors at the market. There are some other food vendors there that never have a wait or a line...and there is a reason! read more

A great little place at the Farmer's Market. I took family there for breakfast and I told them it was worth the wait to try the crab cake benedict. I loved this dish. Unfortunately, I'm now allergic to crab and can only enjoy it vicariously by foisting the dish on friends and family and apparently readers on yelp. To everyone in search of a good, solid, tasty meal, try Dingey's at the Olympia Farmers Market. I'm not sure, but I think Julian H who wrote the other review of Dingey's lives in a different universe than I do. I eat at Dingey's with my family every weekend of the year when the Farmers Market is open. We always have one last meal there just before Christmas when they close down, and eagerly await their return in April. Three of us eat a collective meal, combining pan-seared tuna steaks, oysters, crab melt sandwiches, crab cake benedict, coleslaw, and Manhattan clam chowder in various configurations, depending on our mood. This sumptuous family-style meal, including beverages, never costs us more than $30. The three of us eat at Anthony's on special occasions, and the food is excellent there. But to compare Dingey's and Anthony's in price does not reflect my experience. Dingey's is one of the last vestiges of the Mom-and-Pop diners of yesteryear, and you simply can't compare them to a mega restaurant like Anthony's. I'm not a sauce person, so I've never tried the crab cake benedict, But last fall we hosted a friend from the midwest who had just been on a vacation in France. Finishing her Dingey's crab benedict, she looked up and said "That was better than any meal I had in France." Pretty good review, I'd say. The breakfast offerings at Dingey's are incredible, Their omelets, "skillets" and benedict plates with potatoes are all king-sized. Two people can easily split a serving and come away satisfied. There's nothing like breakfast or lunch at Dingey's on a summer day with the free Market music and the air filled with the aroma of fresh flowers and produce to give you a Northwest experience. But the greatest asset of Dingey's is the ownership. Teresa and Craig are genuine down-to-earth folks who have always treated me and my family like part of theirs. I have called in an order on a rainy day to arrive and find Craig standing at the curb with my hot meal ready to be handed into my car. We never approach the order window without being greeted by name. From Craig's magic tricks to the water dish for dogs out back, there's a personal touch. In a world where we press buttons and stick credit cards into machines without ever connecting with a human being, places like Dingey's are sorely needed. Do yourself a favor and try them out.
