This location not only rents but it also sells kayaks, paddleboards and more water related gear. The owners/managers when I went for first time docking off here were super smart and sweet. Let it be known they are pretty through when it comes to the newbies, so for those whom are a bit more well versed let them know so you can expedite your days timed leisurely journey. Lots of helpful and informative people were around, there was a wide variety of kayaks both short/long and covered/open top. I paid 35$ for two hours in a solo kayak and was very happy with the experience. While everything was great, I really enjoyed petting the two cats that they had. read more

After a frustrating experience trying to purchase two kayaks at a shop in Centerport, five minutes from home, I visited the Dinghy Shop, thirty five minutes from home. Margueritte was very helpful on my first visit. I was looking for me and my husband, but since I was alone the first time, I had to come back. A few days later, we both returned and Mike helped us with two Wilderness Systems kayaks. I brought a friend with me, and she will be purchasing one tomorrow as well. Mike was very patient with us, spending most of the afternoon trying out different boats for us, and especially for our friend. We drove off with new kayaks, paddles, and PRDs on my roof- our friend will be back tomorrow to buy hers. They have a very large inventory, with another big shipment coming in, so it was not difficult to find exactly what we were looking for. We will be meeting two friends there tomorrow for a 6:00pm paddle, which they hold every Wednesday. read more

Today I stopped by to kayak, after reading reviews and prices for this shop and some in Freeport, and I know I made the right choice. Only $30 per person person! (Seriously it's a steal I've checked. ) Also, Michael and Daniel were friendly and helpful. The process was quick and easy, and we were set up on the spot with everything we needed. They will even hold your car keys if you want (we did!). The water in the local canals was calm and great for beginners. Can't wait to go out again and check out some other spots. read more

Me and my girlfriend are beginner kayakers. I have been kayaking once about 5-6 years ago and she has never gone in her life. Dinghy Shop was AMAZING!! They made us feel very comfortable and welcome. They took the time to explain not only the basics but they guided us throughout the whole tour. We did a Wednesday twilight tour and it was absolutely unreal. The sunset was perfect and this place is not only for beginners but they have all levels here as well. We felt like a part of their family and we were falling behind since we were beginners but they were very accomodating to us and put us on our own path. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is an avid kayaker. This is hands down the best place to go to with very reasonable rates. read more

This kayak and starfish rental place is located near the amityville private beach, and is located right by the canals and bays that remind me of Venice, Italy. The rental fee for two hours of kayaking is $32, and the employees were very helpful in giving me instructions and in launching the kayak into the water. The one-hour LIRR ride from Manhattan is worth it. I felt like I took a mini vacation. There weren't too many kayakers, but I saw many motor boats and some jetskies and windsurfers. The whole area is quiet and easygoing. The water is not as choppy as hudson river, so it's good for gliding the kayak and having a rhythm in oarring. read more

This place has everything- kayayks, sunfish, a cute shop, and a great location with a view. The service is friendly and helpful. The first time I went I did the twilight kayak tour- guided tour as the sun set on the bay. The group was fun and we moved at a reasonable pace for everyone. Last time I went I had a one on one lesson sailing on a sunfish with Jim- he's a pro out there and he makes it look easy, but he's a great teacher- very patient and easy to follow. I purchased my first kayak here about a month ago. The staff was very knowledgeable and professional in helping me select what I needed to get started on my new life as a kayaker. Tonight I took a twilight tour of the Great South Bay with their team of experts and about 15 other kayakers ranging in expertise. It began to sun shower as the sun set. We've used The Dinghy Shop for years. They refurbished a 40 year old sunfish and made it sailable (until Sandy destroyed it). They've helped with parts and service on other craft and always been friendly and welcoming. When I thought I wanted to buy a kayak, their in-water kayak try out day was a great way to try different boats and practice kayaking to see if I really wanted one. Then there was a full day of group instruction with a number of expert kayakers for a balanced learning experience and individual attention. I subsequently attended one of their wintertime (free) kayak programs where I had a great time meeting other paddlers of varying degrees of experience and learning some good conditioning exercises. I still want to get to one of their moonlight cross-bay paddles. I highly recommend them. You can buy a boat in a lot of places, but it's the people at the Dinghy Shop that make it such a satisfying, ongoing, experience. read more

I hate to blast a business in my own hometown, but a small business should respect the customer. I was told about a great deal on a paddle board, and I put my name down on it to reserve the board and asked them to call me as soon as it became available. I would've bought it then but they hadn't "established a final price" (really?). So fine, I'll wait for your call...which never came... Then I call them later that week, and they tell me they'll find out the price and call me later....which they never did. Finally, I head down there to talk to them and hopefully just pick up this board, and .... They sold it, right out from under me. I was lied to, strung along, and just treated like nobody. So, I went to another shop in babylon who treated me right. Small businesses unfortunately have to work harder than the big guy to keep winning respect. I lost total respect for the dinghy shop today...and I found out that I'm not alone...others have told me of the lazy, lackluster customer service and unwillingness to respect customers before and after the sale. Such a shame, as I really wanted to believe in this business as something I could rely on the represent what's great about my town and small business. Unfortunately it fell flat today, and I would not recommend this place for buying anything....they never appeared to care. read more

DO NOT CHARTER FROM THE DINGHY SHOP!!! I chartered an Opti under a half-summer charter for my son from the Dinghy Shop ("DS"). The boat was old and beat up -- they said take it or leave it - I had no choice as we decided late in the spring to charter. After the half-summer charter ended I gathered the boat, blades and sail together for pick up by DS. I called them and told them it was ready for pick-up at the yacht club where my son was in the sailing program. Apparently, they did not come to the club to get the boat for 3 weeks (it was their obligation to drop it off and pick it up under the charter agreement). When they finally came to get the boat parts were missing. They charged me hundreds of dollars for missing parts that were there when I called them to get the boat weeks prior, and then claimed that it was my obligation to pay for the parts under the charter agreement. DO NOT CHARTER FROM THE DINGHY SHOP!! For the past two years since I have chartered from the DINGHY LOCKER located in Stamford CT -- new boats! free delivery -- no attitude!! and no games! I have also purchased $1000+ in gear from the DINGHY LOCKER -- always helpful and never an issue. As a parent of 3 boys all of whom are sailing we will have many good years not doing business with the Dinghy Shop!!! Thank you DINGHY LOCKER for giving me a choice! read more

The staff at the Dinghy Shop are second to none. I have previously been in kayak sales for nearly a decade and have never met a group of sales people that have been so thorough and on point during the sale. I had shopped around several other kayak shops over the past few weeks and none of them even come close. The inventory was extensive and I was able to find the exact boat I was looking for. The shop upstairs has pretty much any boating accessory you could think of, as well as the ability to order. I am not sure if the Jim mentioned in a previous review is the same Jim that I dealt with but that review could not be further from the truth. AFTER the point of sale I was equipped with everything I needed to take my new boat out that day. Between a quick tutorial on kayak safety and use, an overview of the water, and even a bottle of water, I was able to get out on the Amityville harbor. I was even able to rinse off my boat afterwards. I had a great time on the water and an even better experience at the Dinghy Shop and would recommend this shop to anyone who truly knows anything about boating/kayaking. I know a great shop in Montana that sells kayaks, great staff and fair pricing, but that doesn't mean that I will be traveling there to purchase a boat any time soon.
