Ten years ago when I heard Dinosaur BBQ was opening in Troy, I was very excited. I heard good things about the restaurant in Utica. I had some friends from that area of NY who raved about it. So I have been to the one in Troy about 3 times. Each time I was not disappointed. Today I met some friends for lunch and I was happy with the service and my meal. I was not in the mood for BBQ so I got the dino burger and fries. It was well done as I asked and still mouth watering juicy. The fries were on point also. My friend ordered nachos and boy was that a generous helping. He had to save some for later. I will definately come back and try some BBQ. I first came her for an event a few months ago and have returned four times since then! The setting is right on the river and is beautiful, especially at sunset. The moment you walk in, you are flooded with the smell of delicious barbecue. Waits can be long if you go around 6pm, but they have a to-go counter next to the waiting area where I have ordered appetizers from while I wait. They also have a bar area and an outdoor patio that you can hang out in too! The only appetizer I have gotten has been the deviled eggs and they are delicious! My husband and I typically order the "Sweetheart Meal," which includes a full rack of ribs along with four sides and two pieces of fresh cornbread (I believe for around $32). The ribs are just INCREDIBLE. They are great the way they come out, but you also have the option of dipping them in one of the several BBQ sauces on the table. The sauce they come in goes perfectly and the meat essentially falls off the bone. In terms of sides, the only one I have not been exceptionally impressed by has been the fries. Other than that, the baked beans, coleslaw, greens, sweet potato, and cajun corn (a special they occasionally have) are all fantastic! Service is usually very friendly and fast too. Well we thought we'd try again..But again we were disappointed..The entire meal was terrible beginning to end..Hubby ordered the sub par 2 meat platter..It had ONE sausage as a choice and the other could almost be a vegan choice as the brisket had so much fat and was such a small portion you could barely eat it...what it lacked in portion size all but made up for with bad taste., slimy, fatty and greasy..The potato salad tasted "off" ..almost like a sysco type premade one..the sloppy wet greens were bland as hell too..After that it was a wrap for Dinasaur BBQ. I had heard rave reviews of this spot, so when I got the chance for a free Tuesday dinner, I quickly walked downtown to this spot. First off, service was fantastic, and they quickly set me up with a few samples of local/fall beers. The Genesee Lemon Strawberry Cream Ale was fantastic, and I stuck with that. The staff was quick to make recommendations for food, and I settled on the two meat platter with pulled pork and brisket, with mac n cheese and baked beans. The platter came with a hunk of tasty cornbread, also delicious, and the sides were pretty solid. Didn't fall in love with the beans, but solidly good - the mac n cheese was excellent. The BBQ was clearly where it was at. The pulled pork was packed with flavor, with a light BBQ drizzle on top, and the brisket was thick-sliced with some jalapeños on top. So so good. I've been to the Rochester location 3 times and the Troy location 4 times. I have always had a great experience. The BBQ is the real deal, smokey and fall apart tender. The beer selection is really excellent too. My servers have always been good and I really can't think of anything negative. When I go I always stick to the BBQ - ribs, brisket, pork, chicken. I had heard from a few locals that Dinosaur Bbq was the place to go for a good meal so being a rainy Monday night I decided to try it. MISTAKE!!! I started out with the bbq chicken wings which are grilled and not breaded. I found the wings to be grilled nicely and the sauce flavor to be very complementary to the wings themselves. The wings were very good. The wings and the server I had are the only reason I felt this establishment deserved 2 stars. The wings were followed by a full slab of ribs, bbq beans, and macaroni and cheese. The beans had an overly smoky taste that made them unsavory. The macaroni was overcooked with the cheese holding the serving together like cement. Now the ribs. When the server sat then down I had high hopes as they looked very appealing to the eye, but they turned out to be the worst ribs I have experienced in my life. They were chewy and dry to the point I felt like I was eating the turkey from the famous scene in Christmas Vacation. I had to use a knife to cut the meat off the bone because it was too rubbery and tough to use my hands. As I looked around I noticed other patrons having the same issue. Hoisin Sesame wings PLEASE!!! I can't get enough of their Hoisin Sesame! I have been multiple times to this location, most recently a few days ago. We vacation in West Sand Lake NY every summer. We always leave the mountain for one meal at Dino BBQ. It's worth the small trip! Lots of options, good prices, love the outdoor eating area and able to always accommodate our large group with small children. I can say my friend love their root beer and root beer floats! I first visited Dinosaur in 2006 on a trip to Rochester, and was basically immediately hooked. I can't say for sure but I'm not sure I'd ever been to an exclusively BBQ restaurant before then, so I may just be completely biased to think Dino is the best-- who knows? Either way, when I heard they were coming to Troy, I was extremely stoked. Over the years it's been nothing but a delight, and such an improvement over the place that was in its location before! I've had the pleasure of enjoying Dinosaur in Troy for a bunch of different types of occasions. They catered my besties' rehearsal dinner, which was a ton of fun. Big skillets of mac and cheese, greens, cornbread, and a make-your-own-sandwich setup that let everyone mix and match to their hearts' content. My partner and I have been here for date night, we brought her parents here when they visited, and we order delivery on the regular, and it's always met or beat our expectations. They always have a ton of good beers and ciders on draft, seasonal and local stuff, and mixed drinks as well; nothing super fancy but definitely something for everyone depending on your taste. The bartenders are fun and know their stuff but aren't pushy or rude, and the servers are always super friendly. This was my first time at this location but I've been to the original Dinosaur BBQ. The food was just as excellent as I recall. I got the ribs which were cooked to perfection, as I expected. My daughter had the Pulled Pork and my husband had the brisket. All were happy with their meals, especially the cornbread. If you're from the South, you might not like this cornbread because it was very sweet but it was perfect for me. Not at all dry, little pieces of corn and just sweet enough. Even my Arnold Palmer was delicious. At first I was a little surprised by the small serving size but it was enough of food. And it was good not to waste so much food. I'm really used to more fries. So I was a little surprised by the handful of fries I got as my side but like I said, it was fine. The prices were not necessarily lunch prices but the food was delicious which is the most important. Now the service. Talk about direct opposites. Our waitress, Maryellen, was great. She greeted us with a smile and she was very responsive...brought us our second drinks just as we were about to finish our first ones. She checked in on us. She was fast and friendly. And now the opposite in service. When we first walked in, the hostess yawned at us. No joke. She didn't even cover her mouth! It must've been a long night. After she yawned at us, she didn't say, "I'll take you to your seat or right this way. "She just said, "follow me!" Thankfully Mary Ellen made up for the hostess' bad first impression. Some years ago I participated in a Wing Tour of Troy in which we visited six establishments in a day and tasted an identical order at each. We picked a winner but, other than one sorry establishment whose name began with B, the wings were very close in flavor and quality. Yesterday, I got takeout from Dinosaur and discovered a whole new aviary. Dinosaur does not fry its wings. They take good and juicy drums and flats, slow smoke them at a low temperature, then crisp on the flame before dousing in your choice of sauce. Holy moly. Without the delightful distraction of a super crispy skin, the smoked meat flavor is pronounced and the sauce soaks in rather than sitting on the surface. The result is spectacular. This was part of a to-go pack which included a pound of pulled pork, six sliders and two sides. (I didn't see it on the take-out menu but I'm sure they could put it together for you.) Establishments that stew pig meat in a slow cooker till it falls apart, douse it with acrid yellow sauce and call it "pulled pork" should take note. This has real smoke flavor and clumps of fat and solid meat because it's cooked in a smoker then dismantled by hand. Great stuff. The beans have bits of last night's pulled pork in them, plus (I was informed) some sausage on top of a sweet-sour flavor base and are addictive. Absolutely no reason not to get this, and absolutely no reason if you are a restaurant that has leftover meat at the end of the day not to start making your beans this way. Potato salad was disappointing, and the potatoes themselves were undercooked. I think I may have gotten an off batch, prepared quickly because they ran out at lunch (I picked up at 1:30) so I'm going to let that pass. I take my barbecue seriously, and reserve the fifth star for a place like Snow's or Franklin (in fact, I gave Franklin four stars because I didn't find it as good as Snow's) but they are doing so many things so much better than other local establishments that I'm going with the tiara. Dinosaur Troy is also better than the original Dinosaur Syracuse if only because of the spectacular river view that somehow coexists with the ratty feel of a well-used biker bar. Went here with five others on a saturday morning as soon as they opened at 11am. Waaay too early for me to wake up on a weekend, but heard that lines would be crazy. Wait didn't end up being too bad, but by the time we left the lines were definitely longer. Started with the wings--there are four levels of hotness. The garlic chipotle (3rd hottest) were not hot at all, but rather sweet. But the Devil's Duel wings (the hottest) were HOTTT. I was sweating bullets and my tongue was hurtin. Delicious! Cajun spiced deviled eggs were also creamy and perfect. For my main plate, I went with the tres ninos which is a smaller portion version of the tres hombres--it consists of pork, brisket and ribs. Everything was great, but the ribs were by far the best meat! Next time, I'll probably go with a full rack of these and the devil's wings. Many traditional sides to choose from, cole slaw and mac+cheese were yummy. DInosaur bbq didn't blow my mind, but I can see why people love it so much. Dinosaur BBQ is more than a restaurant, it's an experience. Get ready to roll up your sleeves, throw your weight watchers points out the window, and eat your weight in meat.
