On the second to last day of my three week stay, their hot water heater sprung a leak. To make matters worse, this was Saturday and I was leaving for Los Angeles at 3 AM Monday morning. My parents were panicking. I got on Yelp and found three plumbers to come out that day and give us an estimate for replacing it. The first estimate was a bit steeper than we hoped. The second estimate (from GEM) was outrageous --almost double the price of the first estimate. My parents were freaking out. Then Brandon from Service Professionals (Somerset) arrived. He took one look at my parents' water heater and said how new it looked and that it should still be under warranty. (The other plumbers hadn't noticed this and my parents didn't remember that they got it only 3 years ago). Brandon went on to explain that because it was probably still under warranty, he would be able to take it out, bring in and get it replaced for much less. He said he could do the switch out with the warranty replacement first thing Monday. OMG! I had to leave my parents' water heater replacement job in a stranger's care. My dad is 89 years old and my mom is 84. To say that it would be easy to take advantage of them is an understatement. I couldn't sleep wondering if I had chosen the right plumber for the job. I just finished one of my bi-weekly Skype visits with the folks. They are thrilled with the beautiful work that Brandon did. What a relief! Brandon did exactly what he said he would do. He pulled out the old water heater, brought it in, got it replaced under warranty and installed the replacement for the price that he quoted. I am so grateful! He went down into the basement to check some wiring and, when he came back up at around 4:45, he told me that there was water leaking down into the basement from my first-floor bathroom. I literally moved into this house yesterday, and it's my first house (I've been an apartment dweller my whole adult life), so I was freaked out and rather panicked about it because, for the first time, I couldn't simply call maintenance. This gentleman told me that he was finishing up a job but that he could come over after he was done. He arrived at 6:14, which is technically very much "after hours". He messed around with the toilet a bit and discovered that the toilet tank was leaking at the tank bolts. He said he just needed to tighten them up. But then they wouldn't come off and he had to cut them off, which took a while. Then he installed new tank bolts, complete with brand new washers, solving the problem completely. This man could have made up anything and I would have believed it in the worried state I was in. He could have talked me into a brand new toilet if he wanted to, he could have replaced things that didn't need replacing, he could have taken his sweet time about what he did do in order to pad the bill - but he did none of that! He was done with the project in about a half hour, start to finish. And his bill was only $125. For an emergency call after hours that is incredibly low. But this guy was clearly not looking to rip anybody off, but rather to make repeat customers out of us - which he definitely did! In fact, I only had about $90 in cash on me, but instead of making me use a credit card or write a check, he gladly just waited about 15 minutes for my wife to come home and then she gave him the remaining $30. And during that 15 minutes he told me all about the best places in town to get takeout, the best pizza place, the best Chinese food place, the best burger place, etc. And as someone who just moved to town, that information was truly appreciated. We plan to install a garbage disposal, replace our dishwasher, upgrade our toilets, install a gas clothes-dryer, and possibly get a new fridge with an icemaker and water in the door, all within the next 4-6 months, and we will definitely be calling this man for each of those projects!!

We had different people come try to take a look and started getting a run around from everyone. In desperation (after staying in hotels with my baby and keeping him covered in blankets and wearing mittens and hats inside whenever we were home waiting for contractors), my husband called Richard in between meetings at his job. Richard responded promptly and set up a time to come over. He let us know he was on the way and got right to work walking me and my shivering baby through his very efficient troubleshooting process. He was able to pinpoint several issues with our heating and suggest how to proceed next. He referred us to an electrician but refused to leave until he set up a workaround to bring warmth back into the house. Richard is basically a miracle worker and definitely of the old school--polite, professional, and takes pride in his work. At the moment he is the only person I will recommend to family and friends with emergency heating problems.
