This review is long overdue. I went to have my hair highlighted by Sofia A. June 19th. While growing up, I was a toe head blonde and later, after having my children, ended up with hair that is a dull, light brown color. I have been highlighting my hair for the last 25 years and had one person who was my go to for everything until she moved away 5 years ago. I have hopped around from place to place never really finding that same look. My last two highlighting experiences were dreadful to say the least, until I met Sofia A., who changed everything. Sofia A. is a master at her skill. She really listens, understands what is being expressed, articulates the information to be able to achieve the desired result. The $425 service I had an appointment for started 35 minutes late. I also had an appointment to follow the first for a bang trim. But since my first appointment started so late I was told I would have to wait for my stylist to finish a haircut she had t even started. Bangs take about 5 minutes. No one else was available to cut my bangs. I have been a customer for 15 years and have never been treated so rudely. I have been paying $225 plus tip for a haircut and for that kind of money I would expect and deserve excellent customer service. I will find it somewhere else. read more

Absolute worst haircut of my life and on several occasions have had terrible color experiences where my hair was dyed very orange tinted and years later I'm still trying to recover my normal color. But the haircut recently was the most devastating. I had long hair to my mid back. I asked for a trim and to keep as much length as possible. The woman not only hacked more than 6 inches off, it is an absolute terrible haircut and even if I wanted short hair. It looks like a child went at it just jabbing with scissors. I am completely devastated and so depressed. Never have I ever wanted short hair. I even stopped her part way through to remind her to please trim as little as possible and she reassure me she was but I was trembling as I watched 3 inches fall to the floor, which she must have gone through and done twice. My hair grows slowly and it will take me years to recover. Completely, utterly devastated. read more

I got my hair highlighted with Sophia today and she was incredible. As someone who's in between blonde / brunette I tend to struggle figuring out the correct Bronde color and gave her some basic ideas of what I was looking for and she crushed it. The color and placement was beautiful and I was a little nervous about being too blonde but she was so flexible with allowing me to come back to tone my hair darker if I wasn't happy in a few days. I am new to this area, my hair hadn't been highlighted for six months, and I decided to go all in with what I hoped was a great whole head highlight, even if at a higher price than I'm used to. DiPietro Todd was highly rated and I chose a stylist who was well reviewed for her blonde highlights. My first impression of the salon was that the service was polite, but not warm and friendly. There was no attempt at making a connection with a new client. It was very busy and it felt a bit like a factory asembly line. After the highlights, the shampoo guy was told to give me a gloss treatment. Well, I think it would have been proper to indicate to the client first that it would be an extra charge. After the shampoo, the guy asked me if I wanted a blowout. I said "What, as opposed to walking out with wet hair?!" Then I realized what he was saying was that it was another extra charge for that. I declined. I was feeling pretty grumpy about that and when the stylist asked me what I thought of the color, I said I wouldn't know until I got home and dried my hair myself. She kindly threw in the blowout, but I would know "next time" that that is an extra charge for drying the hair. I ended up with hair that has a clear demarcation line between roots and old highlighted parts, it's not blended. The underlayer around the front hairline (and on the scalp!) is a weird reddish, light brown color - in other words, orange! This has never happened before with my hair. The stylist said I could come back for correction after a couple of days and the color had settled, but I have no confidence to return. My sense is that this salon has a loyal, well-heeled clientele, but because of the repeat business, they've lost the refinement and what expectations should be for a fine salon. A rolled-up robe was handed to me when I walked in, rather than held open for me; I was moved from station, to bench, to shampoo to a new station and had to haul my purse and possessions from place to place; and the stylist didn't even hold up a mirror at the end for me to see the back of my hair. All in all, not what one would expect for a total of $540!! read more

I used to go here a lot in the mid 2000s and liked it for color. I went back twice in the past 12 months, once for a cut, once for a color, and neither went especially well. I don't normally write reviews, but given how expensive this place is and that both times I asked for something specific and got something else, I thought I should. The first appointment was last spring for a cut. I had very long hair and hadn't had it cut in awhile, so I had split ends. I made sure to say (MANY times) that I wanted to keep as much of the length (which hit close to my waist) as possible, but to just clean up the split ends. I left with hair that barely reached my shoulders. This was an appointment with a "senior stylist" so literally like, twice the price. To make it even worse, my wedding was in a month. Thankfully, I hadn't spent months planning Pinterest boards with long hair photos, but I was really disappointed that my hair (usually long) would be slightly longer than a mom-cut at my wedding. The stylist knew my wedding was coming up, that I wanted it long, and was considering a few options for how to have it styled. He just cut more than half of it off anyway and didn't acknowledge it at all--just suggested that instead of the more intricate half-up dos I'd been planning on, I pin it back on one side. I'm still sad that my long hair wasn't there on my wedding day, and I really feel like he should have listened a bit more to someone who is about a month out from getting married. The second appointment was months later for color. I went in with photos and was clear that I wanted to go significantly lighter. Instead of the tint and balayage I'd booked, she did a gloss and partial balayage (which someone wound up costing the same). I'm sorry, but I don't want to spend $400-600 on a slight shade change. I left really disappointed and won't be back. Plenty of other salons in the area that do listen to you and do a good job. I feel really bad not leaving a better review because the colorist was nice, but I don't have the kind of money or time to devote to going back in for a fixer-upper when she could have taken 3 more minutes at the beginning of the appt to listen to me/talk. I also specifically said that I wanted some more (slight) color variation in the balayage, which she said she'd do, but the partial balayage she did was all one color. I left with hair barely a shade lighter than what I'd walked in with and was told to just "give it a few days." It's been a few days and guess what? My hair hasn't magically continued to lighten. (Thankfully it has grown out to the length I expected it to be for my wedding...10 months after my wedding day). read more

After my last appointment (where my cut and color were over $550 and they still charged $40 for a blowdry on top of that), my sister asked me why I'd let my hair get so frowsy. I had a bad experience at diPietro Todd last week and wrote a review here. Without my consent, diPietro Todd shared my private email and phone number with the stylist. July 6, 2020, after 8PM PT, the stylist sent me a series of aggressive harmful text messages. My initial review was about how things have changed with the reopening highlighting safety measures in place and that shampoo is no longer a default part of a hair cut. However, I've updated to share feedback that clients should be careful with this business as they willingly shared my personal contact information without consent, enabling a stylist to make repeat phone calls and send upsetting text messages. Violating a client's privacy is not a good, safe, or healthy business practice. This is a stylist I enjoyed working with and genuinely care about as a human being. I think she is wonderful, kind, and talented. For the first time in over a year, the cut she gave me without a shampoo wasn't a good experience or a good cut. I gave her $100 before the service to be supportive as she hasn't had tips for three months. I also tipped $30 at the end of the service because it isn't her fault dPT now requires clients to know to opt-in for shampoo. dPT commented below that clients should now let their stylist know they want to "opt-in" for shampoo. This is worth knowing if you go to a dPT salon. If I had known, then I would have either shampooed and dried my hair before arriving or gone to a different salon that was offering shampoo with a hair cut. I left dPT feeling dirty and after washing my hair at home it was clear the cut wasn't good. COVID-19 has changed a lot of things for businesses and we're all adapting to a new normal. I support dPT's new policy of not defaulting to include shampoo with service, especially if it puts the stylist's health at risk. I was hoping they would take the feedback I shared and update their website so clients could pre-wash and dry or at least be aware of the change. To be clear, dPT does not have any right to share personal private client contact information with a stylist or anyone else without client consent. read more

I have been coming here for years and have been delighted until the past seven or eight months. First, the very professional front desk staff left and there's been a revolving door of people who are not interested in client service, attention to detail, or facilitating a pleasant experience. Then my colorists left without saying anything. I was assigned a new one who is competent, but always rushed, and often behind schedule (exacerbated by the lack of communication by front desk staff). My stylist has been traveling non-stop for years, so booking a cut is nearly impossible. She doesn't appear to stick to her schedule although her work is meticulous. The final straw was when I was kept waiting 45 minutes for my color appointment due to a scheduling error. No apologies. Then, the colorist offered to paint some subtle highlights "to make up for the wait." When I finally got out of there and went to pay, my tab was $98 more than usual. I wish she would have made clear that I was paying for the highlights. It was especially surprising since the one other time there was a scheduling error and I was kept waiting, my previous colorist comped me highlights. I asked to book my next appointment and the front desk staff told me she was tired and I could just call. This is unheard-of. Their policy was to have you book your next appointment before leaving. Disappointed. Had my second appointment here yesterday. First time I left perfectly happy, thrilled I had found my new hair salon, told all my friends. However yesterday, a few hours after getting home after my second visit, I noticed obvious problems with my hair color, very uneven, actually to the extent of feeling a bit embarrassed to go out that evening. I called the salon, no answer, left a message regarding my concern and dissatisfaction, simply asked for some kind of fix. Still haven't heard anything back almost 24 hours later. After $200 for a tint and gloss (not including a blow dry), I expected and hoped for better - both for the job/color and the customer service. I wanted to like this place, good vibe, it's close to home, and the stylists seem super friendly. But won't be going back because after $200 my hair is a mess and they apparently couldn't care less. I had an appointment this morning at 9am and I called the salon this morning at 8:50 to let them know I was running about 20-30 minutes late. While I know this is not ideal, my son has been sick, we were up all night and I over slept. Completely, my fault, also he's 2. I was told to wait on hold for about 5 minutes while they checked to see if this would be an issue. I was then informed that it would be too late and I would have to not only forfeit my appointment but also pay 50% of the service. I have been going to DPT since 2019 and NEVER been late or missed an appointment. I fully appreciate that people are booked back to back, however I find this to be outrageous. There are ways we could have worked this out, perhaps I dry my own hair. Again, I've never missed an appointment in all the years going there. This wasn't a no show, I was not cancelling, I was simply letting you all know that I was running late. Not only did this completely mess up my entire day, which I had to plan and pay for childcare for, but it's really the point that there was no flexibility and the woman on the phone wasn't especially nice or understanding. read more

I went here for root coverage (no highlights,just roots) and was shocked. The dye was still on my skin after the washout and the stylist asked me if I wanted her to comb it out. Surprised, I said sure and she did 3 comb strokes and I asked for color remover to get the color off my skin. After I did it myself and combed my hair myself, I was presented with the bill for $175 which did not include a blow out. I left with wet hair. Needless to say I'd never go here again. I had my color done yesterday by Rachel and was SO so pleased with the results. She took the time to highlight, base adjust and tone after reviewing photos with me. Chelsea and I were solo on a balcony and Jocelyn took my temperature when I walked in. We were all masked and the experience was lovely. Being directionally challenged and from San Francisco, Jocelyn stayed on the phone with me to offer turn by turn directions to the salon. My hair looks fabulous and I couldn't be more grateful. What a rip-off this place is! They charge you for every little thing. I expect at a top-quality salon like this, that they would, for example, give you a quick blow-out after a color treatment. Instead, I am standing there with wet hair, the colorist ignoring me, seeming to have no interest in engaging with me, checking my color, giving me a blow dry even just to see the color. Nope. She did the color, handed me to the hair-washer, and then she was just done. What kind of service is this? I was standing there in a state of mild shock, when she deigned to give me a blow-dry because her next client was late. Oh, I can PAY for a blow-dry, $35, thank you. Seriously? Then when you go to pay, there is an additional $10 "service fee". What is this for? This is because their MO is: "let's milk the customer as much as we can." I hate that. Sabrina's been cutting my hair for the last 2 or so years and I followed her to the Mill Valley location. I have long straight asian hair and I generally like to keep the length. Sabrina's always attentive during the consult and is able to translate my non-hair salon descriptions of what I want to an amazing haircut after. This time, I got what turned out to be the Oribe signature cut, which removed some of the weight and added movement and airy-ness to my hair. As always, Sabrina listened to my requests to be able to tie my hair up even with some face framing layers and to not remove too much weight. I totally trust being in her chair. Sabrina recommended Justin for color and I'm glad she did. I wanted more subtle highlights that would grow out naturally without a lot of maintenance, and Justin delivered multidimensional highlights (I think it's a cross between balayage and using foils) that would fade differently over time - how cool is that? Justin's use of color is creative and organized (if that's a thing) and I loved how it turned out. Also, everyone else at the salon was super friendly and I like that there's easy parking. There is a goddess of hair, and her name is Amita. She is benevolent, she is wise, and she has the power to reveal your most gorgeous and best self, even when you forgot just what it looked like. I will confess that I have RESISTED writing a review for this location of di Pietro Todd salon, for years. I resisted because, as you've probably guessed, I did not want them to be even more in-demand, and for their prices to go up. I guess with the shutdown, I have a more humane sense of gratitude and community. Now, I am so glad they're open, and open with excellent safety precautions. I am grateful that women in this world can still aspire to and attain beautiful hair. Until yesterday, it was a year since I had my hair cut. With the shutdown, I thought I'd grow it long. Since I spend a lot of time reading about medieval women, I figured, well, *they* dealt with all this hair (mark of beauty, purity, youth), and often boasted about it, so maybe I too will benefit from these elegantly long tresses... Reality check: either my hair was a mess, or, I invested absurd amounts of time taming it into submission. The feeling of lightness, as Amita relieved me of all that hair, was also freedom. My long hair was mostly aspirational-- I still associate the beauty of long tresses with my friend Crina, who used to model, and came from Romania, and tossed her glossy back-length locks while telling jokes, making us laugh, and transfixing all of us watching her. But I am not Crina, and somehow, the lightness of shoulder-length hair matches my personality. It is bouncy, irreverent. It is not easily controlled, yet, it is beautiful. When she was finishing up, Amita, who radiates style, Amita the benevolent says, " this is Brigitte Bardot hair" . Ah vanity, you seductive vice. In feeling like my most youthful, mischievous self after visiting diPietro Todd salon, I can only hope that there's a bit of virtue mixed in with this sinful indulgence. read more

She's very versatile - I've gotten both amazing bobs and pixie cuts from her, and she's always willing to go over inspiration pictures with me and transform our ideas into standout technical or creative cuts. She is super knowledgable too and has helped me find products that work for my hair. It's a bonus that the salon itself is always pleasant to visit - parking is easy, everyone's nice. I don't feel anxious or out of place walking in, like I have at some other salons, and that's worth a lot. Would definitely recommend! read more

I have been getting my haircut here for years! In 2020 they built the CUTEST outdoor stations, on the back balcony so it's completely private. I have a very tight schedule, and my availability changes so often but I have never had a hard time getting in with someone, and the front desk never makes me feel like they're annoyed by my constant rescheduling. All the stylists are very accommodating, and flexible, though they do have a strict 24 hours cancellation policy. Every-time I leave, no matter who I book with, I leave with the same level of satisfaction. SIDENOTE - they also have the cutest accessories and fun retail. I buy all my hair ties, pins, etc here and the last time I was in they had recently started selling this CBD line that has a bath salt I'm obsessed with! read more

I went to get a pretty small haircut, not a very dramatic one. I had my hair cut by Adam, who cut me off when trying to explain the subtlety of what I wanted. He told me to "stop rambling" quite directly, and I felt unheard when I really wanted to get what I wanted across. I was having a hard time describing my length, and he told me to "Stop talking and answer his question." This is not the experience I usually have at salons, I usually feel unapologetic about saying what I want and how I feel. When washing my hair, he forcibly grabbed my ankles and put them on the stool after I could not see the footstool and was struggling to place my feet on it. He repeatedly mocked what I had to say and would interrupt, making me feel like I want to cry. Don't get me wrong, the haircut was really good, but I wanted to feel nurtured and listened to and like he was happy to see me, which was not the case. read more

I have been going to diPierto Todd in Mill Valley for years and it's always been a fantastic experience for me. Amita is incredibly talented, intuitive, personable, professional and has a great sense of humor. She listens carefully and always seems to understand what I'm looking for in a hair cut. I have long layers and only need to get my hair cut 3-4 times per year because she gives such a fabulous cut. Also, during the pandemic I went right after the salon was allowed to re-open and they were implementing all the safety precautions, making me feel very safe. Unbelievable. I am given a 9:30 am appointment with No No No communication about the 3.5 billion dollar construction on east blitheasale. I sit today in 26 minutes of traffic from 101. I call. They never say sorry. Never say yes we should have told you. Never ever make a concession. I don't live in Mill valley. I am not psychic . Any company that works on rigid time lines would think to tell their clients that now through feb 22 there will be an additional twenty minutes added to their commute. I walk in to no apology nor flexibility not acknowledgement that maybe just maybe tell those who make reservations about the road work would be a good idea. I am out seeing my clients today and they bat there six Liu d air eye lashes abs at " you could Come back another day"... as though I am a housewife and that's just a matter of finding time between my yoga classes. I've been going to this salon off and on for 16 years. My mother and two siblings and three nieces as well. You may still be able to charge the rates you do and keep up your less than average customer service because mill valley is now the epicenter of no customer service and yearnings for Cool that leave people forgetting what it means to run a decent business but there are some of us out there know how customers should be considered/ treated. read more

I had been going to their salon in San Francisco, and now that I live in Mill Valley, I can go to get my hair done in a salon I've enjoyed in past years. I have very thick, wavy hair, and my stylist, Lacy, listened carefully to my requests about shape and texture. She did a fabulous job. I am a short haired person, so shorter styles type people may want to ask for her! I got a mostly razor cut, and she was deft with this. I have a shag type cut, and it's perfect. read more
