Tbh the service itself is a 5/5. We were visiting from out of town, and when we had arrived, it was already very late with this restaurant being the only one that was convenient AND opened. Considering that it was almost their closing time, they were still EXTREMELY accommodating which I'm very grateful for. Super friendly people with smiles across their faces! The waitress also came to check on us many times to ensure everything was okay and if we had any questions. She pointed out that the serving size of each dish would be pretty big- which was a nice to know! The restaurant itself was very big with lots of comfortable seating- also very clean! But... sadly.. I go to restaurants for the quality of the food and I must say, the food was not great. Before heading into the restaurant, we didn't know what to expect with the restaurant being named "Diplomat". We thought it would be a western cuisine. But boy do we love a good surprise. After we got seated and took a glimpse of the menu, it was indeed a Chinese-Canadian style restaurant. LOL. I will give some grace as ik that these types of restaurants will not be authentic by any means as it caters towards the western/Canadian flavours. We went to The Diplomat because we were staying at the Delta Hotel and our overall experience was very good. The restaurant had a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere which was welcome after a long day on the road. We ordered the Fisherman's Platter and it was delicious! It was so nice to be able to have a combination of fried and grilled. Not all restaurants will do that. We're in town visiting and I was looking for a restaurant with Crab Legs. I didn't read the info for the restaurant properly and didn't realize that their buffet is only available on certain days at certain times. We stayed anyways. The restaurant is very clean and the service was great. The prices are a little high but we got a good amount of food so it balances out. I'd give 3.5 if possible but will settle for 3, based on one experience with 6 people. Apparently it's well known as a late night place since it's open 24/7 and gets busy in the wee hours. Our booth was in the corner and could have accommodated a few more people. Upholstery was shabby. FOOD: We had a mid afternoon meal with assorted dishes: the lobster chowder was a meal and priced as such but offered in the appetizer section. Served with a fluffy homemade roll and real butter. Big chunks of lobster. The lobster roll was loaded with meat but a little dry. It came with with big long chunky fries that are highly recommended for the crispiness. They know to do fries around here! Curried noodles with chicken was a big serving (half order) but lacking in presentation. Kids burger and fries looked substantial and didn't get finished. Probably due to having the chocolate milkshake first, which was a nice looking drink that everyone exclaimed over. Fish and chips came with a huge portion of both. Chine combo plate was colorful and plentiful and packed home nicely after an honest try to eat it all. So be ready for large portions. The Greek salad left a lot to be desired but I guess it's how they make it here. Some of the greens were a little creepy and should have been chucked out yesterday. No green peppers. They are known for the Chinese food and the buffet, so I snapped a few pics on the was by. The waiter was really nice and helpful explaining things, bring more water and take away boxes. read more

Don't eat there unless you have to. Better food at the hotel restaurant. After reading reviews I had hope that the seafood will be good. Scallops were just ok, but the lobster chowder is like Campbells canned soup dumped on a plate, thick, no taste and literally 2 pieces of lobster added to the mix. It doesn't taste anything like seafood soup. It is gross. If you want any seafood, it is worth making your way to the downtown area. Iaan's way restaurant across from Hilton has amazing seafood chowder and great grilled atlantic fish. Dinner at Diplomat has been my worse meal of my stay in Fredericton, and that includes all the food I had at a conference, so that says a lot read more

We went to this restaurant today with high expectations based off of our friends reviews. We are staying at the Delta hotel and happened to carry our coffee over with us (mainly to keep us warm since it's randomly 40 degrees outside). As soon as we sat down the waitress, Erin, informed us that "in the common world you would never bring and outside beverage into a restaurant". We had been seated for no more than 30 seconds before being badgered by the waitress. She then went back to the kitchen and loudly talked about our table to the rest of the staff. When she came back to the table, we told her she could take them and throw them away... instead she just kept saying "this is something everyone knows and shouldn't do". She came to work that day ready to pick a fight, which is unfortunate since she works in customer service industry. Since she refused to let it go, EVEN AFTER WE OFFERED FOR HER TO TAKE THE COFFEE, we got up and walked out. My aunt recommended this place well I was visiting. I was a little skeptical from the Yelp rating but we gave it a whirl. Our server, Crystal, was fantastic. She made all the difference in saving the meal. I had ordered steak medium-rare but received it well-done. Both she and the manager were very apologetic and provided a new steak. Sadly this one was underdone compared to the previous one (I guess worried they would overcook again). It was still good, but quite rare. I also received a few ribs and a dessert for free for the inconvenience. The steak was a good size, and the side portions of caesar salad (+$2) and broccoli were very generous. Price was about average for this kind of meal. Also ordered a Caesar drink but it tasted watered down sadly, and the starter soup wasn't very good (curry chicken?) :( All in all I would still go back for another try based on great service and portions of the food that were good, and hopefully bump this rating up to a 4 or more. read more

Let me start by saying that the Diplomat "was" our go to for Chinese food. The key word here is "was" I'm not sure what has happened, new management, new chief, something else, or all of the above but the last 3 times we have ordered from here the food and portions have not been up the standard we had always associated with this restaurant. I placed an online order this evening for the diplomat in Fredericton. I ordered the filet mignon and side order of rice. I couldn't believe the speed of the order. When I showed up to pick up my order I asked how it was cooked so fast and the staff were very polite and even got me the manager. He explained the food was cooked properly and it should be to my pleasing. So I went home partially skeptical. Well I have to stand here and confess the steak was broiled to perfection and the manager even called me within minutes of my last bite. He wanted to make sure I was satisfied with my order and I was. I don't normally give a 5 star ratting however the restaurant followed up and that definitely is not common anymore. if you like a good quality steak, I recommend the Filet Mignon. I don't see what all the fuss is about, the food leaves an awful lot to be desired. I pass on it every chance I get, in fact I wont go out if that's where i am invited to, what's the point, it's a mad dash home to get rid of it, it's kind of like a colon cleanse on steroids. Well I have to say, this is the first time I don't rely on a yelp over all rating and choose to go somewhere... We were in Fredericton for business and saw the add in the yellow pages. After spending a week in the "buffet capital", Las Vegas, I saw some pretty amazing buffets. Although at first glance it doesn't look like much (5 salads, 2 soups, crab and shrimp and 8-10 Chinese dishes) at first, when we dove in, I was blown away by the quality of the food. To top it off, the service was well above par for what I was expecting at a buffet! I started off with a wonton soup and a selection of salads. The Caesar salad was great with a nice dressing, real bacon & parm; I had an amazing potato salad with cheese, an orzo and roasted veg salad and a shrimp pasta salad. Everything was fresh and tasted home made. Their egg rolls are pork and veg, delicious and they have home made plum sauce. I then ventured to the crab legs.... Although not King Crab as stated in a previous review, these snow crab legs were some of the tastiest I have ever had. I usually prefer dungeoness crab to snow crab but these were delicious!!! To top it off, as I was making my way through the stack I was thinking to myself "all I'm missing is a finger bowl to was my hands"... And then without even asking the waiter shows up with one. The "meat" section of the buffet was equally as good. I had some more egg rolls, shrimp and scallop chow mein, this Chinese 5 spice beef and veg, sweet ad sour chicken, curried mussels, chicken balls that were huge and plump with big pieces of chicken and fried wontons. It's true, $23.99 (weekend price) is more than one is used to paying for a buffet in the Maritimes but I can honestly say I have never had buffet food as good as this place. I will definitely be back next time I'm in freddy and have a buffet urge... Must remember to bring the stretchy pants next time:) read more

What can you say about the Dip....Meh. I've been here numerous times and each time it's been ok...... if you get the buffet. I had a huge craving for Chinese food so my wife and I headed to the Dip. I got the buffet, which is ok, but a little pricey for what you get, there really isn't a huge selection, but the quality is usually pretty good. Now my wife had the open faced hot roast beef sandwich (sounds good, I know) until it came to the table. Now this is NOT and exaggeration, the beef wasn't even fit for a gas station sandwich, it was LOW quality sandwich meat (and very little amounts I might add) put on top of 2 pieces of bread. The mashed potatoes I could swear where powdered potatoes portrayed as mashed. Now I've had allot of potatoes in my life, and I can honestly say they were the stiffest, and driest I've ever had. Now for some reason people in Fredericton stand by their restaurants even if they have gone down hill, only if restaurant has been there forever, and this is one of them. The place is always busy, and the only reason I can think why is because there aren't really any other decent Chinese places in town, so that's where everyone goes. In closing like I mentioned at the beginning, the buffet isn't that bad, just be prepared to spend $20+ per person through the week, and it increases on the weekend. The atmosphere is good, and the service is ok, nothing to write home about, Oh yeah and it's open 24 hrs, so if your a little tipsy and looking to soak up the alcohol after the bars, this is the place for you, but it get's a little crazy. read more

To begin, I asked the waitress "what is this restaurant known for" she replied, "CHINESE food." So I order a "combo 2". VERY expensive, so I expect a lot, but u was wrong. "Chicken Fried Rice" tasted like pre-cooked steamed rice with frozen chicken strips cut up and heated. Honey garlic chicken wings DEFINITELY pre-cooked and quantity was NOT worth the price. $16.99...never again. To the Diplomat restaurant, please give your customers better food. To the customer, you will find venturing outside of Fredericton, NB this "CHINESE restaurant" is at the bottom when it comes to REAL Canadian Chinese cuisine and its prices are EXTREMELY to high...not worth it... The Diplomat is an institution in Fredericton. It's open 24 hours. The service is always excellent. The food is constantly good...not exceptional but solid. If you like Canadian Chinese food, their buffet is a must. Note that the lunch hour buffet priced at $15.99 (Monday-Thursday) is a much better bargain than the dinner buffet. When I lived in Fredericton, while attending university, I often went to the Diplomat for Chinese as it is quite good. I went on occasion with my family, but also with friends or with a date. I enjoyed the buffet, but more so during the weekday when it was cheaper. I can understand how people think the buffet is expensive, and it can be on special occasions - but the food is good and the quality is there. They serve king crab, shrimp, a variety of salads, rice, chicken wings, soup etc and I love their egg rolls. I have been here at varying times of the day, including as late as 2am (sober). I have had the buffet, brunch, dinner menu items and take out. The service is good, and the staff is friendly. When I graduated from university my parents took me here for dinner, and I was quite happy. I live in NS now and wish Halifax/Dartmouth had a restaurant comparable to this. Whenever I go back to NB to visit, I make sure to come here. My only recommendation is to make a reservation if you plan on going on a weekend or a special occasion (ex. valentines day, mothers day, etc). Since it is right by the hotel, and downtown Fredericton, it can get quite busy. read more

Ahhhh the Dip. An old favorite. But expensive and sub par I think it is just the novelty of an all you can eat asian buffet- mixed with canadian- and the 24 hour appeal. That's what draws you in. But honestly, if you head to the north side, there are much better asian cuisine places. This is on my places to hit list for F'ton. A good place to hit for all day breakfast. Homemade toast is great and baked beans trigger childhood memories of my mom's Saturday night baked bean supper! The Chinese is good but not gourmet. I have been disappointed with the quality of their egg rolls - hard and rubbery. It is a shame because egg rolls can be such a great intro dish for any restauranteur. The service is consistently good and attentive. Parking is a pain in the butt (try getting in and out with an 80 year old in tow!) It is a popular spot with townees so get a reservation on Friday/Saturdays! read more

Probably one of the most expensive buffets in town, and it doesn't include a drink other than water in the cost. First, it's not a huge buffet bad it's mostly cold. There's nothing labeled so it's anyone's guess if it's batter fried, like the salmon "surprise" broccoli dish or the chicken ball needs the sweet sauce dumpling. The crab legs were cold and that made it more difficult to extract the meat. I think it's a great idea but reduce the pricing to half and maybe I'll come again. read more

Nice atmosphere, very comfortable seating, and has a nice waiting area. Parking is a little difficult during peak times, but there is an overflow lot at the Delta next door. Great spot for all-day breakfast and the buffet is generally good. A reservation is a must during busy times to avoid a long wait! At $30 for the supper buffet, they offer Chinese food, seafood (including crab legs, shrimp, and mussels), salads, and desserts, but very pricey considering it is quite a small buffet. Definitely get the buffet if you plan on eating more expensive things such as the seafood. Also, things are not labelled and I would not recommend coming here if you have an allergy. The buffet does not include drinks either. Only thing was I was slightly worried about the food where some of it was sitting out in the perfect temperature for bacteria and food supposed to be hot was sometimes cold, including the crab legs and mussels. I noticed they mix the old with the new and do not use the method of moving older things to the top with stuff like the crab legs, so the old ones sit on the bottom. The mussels were also not washed very well and had sand in them. Overall though, good choices and good food. Nice atmosphere, recommend for a night with the family or friends if you don't mind the price. also, open 24 hours! read more

It gets an extra star because it's open 24hrs & the staff are really friendly and those are the only redeeming features. Over-priced and the food is NOT worth it. We ordered some chinese take-out and for over $40 got 1 1/2 pieces of soo guy, 6 chicken balls, a "side" of under cooked dried out fried rice (in which I found a prize! A piece of plastic) and szechuan beef that contained 5 pieces of beef. All half orders that cost the same as full orders in any other chinese restaurant. Never again, people! Portions large, overpriced however the cheesecake is amazing, servers are Kool and for a late night cheat meal with friends it's a really good spot.
